Shared Reading is a teaching approach generally used in a whole class group where all students are able to see the same text. It is used to enable students to read and enjoy books that they may not be able to read independently, and to introduce and reinforce literacy skills and strategies before students are expected to apply them in guided or independent reading. Kindergarten Shared Reading Day 1

12:15
This shared reading video takes place in a kindergarten classroom using the story, "I Went Walking." Shared Reading is a great time to bring the students to the carpet for a short amount of time (10 minutes) and have everyone's eyes on one text. Each day is focused on a specific reading foundational skill and reading literature standard. As I introduce the book, I want to emphasize how we are using the pictures FIRST by looking at the cover, back of the book, title, and even the title page to "get our brains ready" before we even start reading the book. We are doing inferential work by looking at the pictures and thinking which animals will come up next and how the little boy feels at the end when all the animals follow him. The text nicely lends itself for students to chime in because the structure of the book has great repetition. It's evident that this kindergarten class has structures and routines in place thanks to Mrs. Hackman who is an awesome kindergarten teacher! The students are highly engaged and are able to retell the story across their fingers.

Word Study in Action: Shared Reading Using Cloze

02:43
Powerful Words: The Reading/Writing Connection Shared Reading Using Cloze This segment demonstrates a step in the powerful word strategy. Using context clues provided by the teacher, students try to identify the "powerful words" they selected from the text in a previous shared reading lesson. (The powerful words used have been covered with a sticky note.) This is a good way to help students clarify the meaning of each powerful word. How might you use cloze with key terms to enhance vocabulary development in the content areas?

Shared Reading Day 1

12:56
This shared reading video takes place in Ms. Manor's 1st grade classroom using the story, "Flora's Blanket." Shared Reading is a great time to bring the students to the carpet for a short amount of time (10 minutes) and have everyone's eyes on one text. Each day is focused on a specific reading foundational skill and reading literature standard. As I introduce the book, I want to emphasize how we are using the pictures FIRST by looking at the cover, back of the book, title, and even the title page to "get our brains ready" before we even start reading the book. We are doing inferential work by looking at the pictures and thinking how the characters are feeling as they go on this adventure to search for Flora's blanket. The students are highly engaged and have started to change their voices to match the character in the text because of the repetition. Awesome class!!!

Guided Reading in a 3rd Grade Classroom

: Small group instruction and guided reading are critical components of the reading block. Guided reading, as defined by Fountas and Pinnell, is a teaching approach designed to help individual students learn how to process a variety of increasingly challenging texts with understanding and fluency. Small groups are made up of students with similar instructional reading levels and learning needs. Through guided reading, students learn how to develop and use strategies to construct meaning from text. Teachers pull small groups for guided reading while other students are engaged in Daily 5 activities or other valuable literacy work. Small group guided reading lessons should be carefully planned in advance of the lesson. In this video, the teacher will work with a small group of 3rd grade students.

Key Links Guided Reading

07:27
Guided Reading is an approach where students are grouped to read according to their reading stage (or level) — not age. Students in a guided reading group are prompted to apply literacy skills and strategies they have been introduced to through Shared Reading or other literacy experiences. The teacher is able to assess whether students are able to use appropriate literacy skills and strategies by the responses they make to teacher prompts. During Guided Reading the responsibility for reading shifts more to the student than in Shared Reading. The teacher supports the readers by asking probing questions. Visit http://www.keylinks.com.au
