Seed Germination | #aumsum #kids #education #science #seeds

05:28
Our topic for today is Seed Germination. The life of a plant begins from a tiny seed. The seed is protected by an outer covering called a seed coat. The seed contains a small baby plant called the embryo. Conditions required for the growth of a seed are Moisture, Warmth, Nutrient rich soil, Sunlight and Good quality seed. Once, these conditions are satisfied, the seed begins to grow. The seed absorbs water from the soil and provides moisture to the embryo. The plant cells inside the seed start duplicating, enzymes get activated and the embryo starts getting nourishment. The first sign of growth is a tiny root which comes out of the seed. With more and more nourishment, the embryo starts growing. Eventually, the growing plant bursts open through the seed coat in search of sunlight to start its own process of photosynthesis. Once the seed coat falls off, the root starts growing downwards to anchor the seed and to search for more food and nutrients from the soil. Meanwhile, the shoot also starts growing upwards towards the light. Soon, we see a baby plant with tiny leaves. This process of the growth of a seed into a plant is called germination.

Green Bean Light Experiment

08:42
http://elperfecto.com What happens if a plant does not get sunlight? As a home school science lesson for my son, age 10, we performed an experiment. It is fall here in Arkansas so we do not expect to get any beans out of these plants. We planted green bean seed in two pots. After the seed germinated in the pots and the plants grew some leaves, we covered one pot with a cardboard box. The other pot we let have normal sunlight. 12 days later, we removed the box and compared the plants. The video shows the results. The pot covered with the box, which did not get sunlight, suffered, with three of its four plants dying. The surviving plant looks sickly. The pot that received sunlight all of those days looks much better. Conclusion: Sun light is important for life. Plants need light to live.

CRJ BRONX CREW| Raisa Teaching Music Class

01:38
Students in the music class planted lima beans and are singing to the plants to help them grow. The Bronx internship is a part of the Kauffman Experience Summer Programming for the Center for Responsibility and Justice at Eastern Nazarene College. Six ENC students are interning in the Bronx in collaboration with Bronx Bethany Community Corporation (BBCC) for a 6 week immersion program wherein interns explore connections between art, justice, and organizing while working with 6-12 year old campers in the BBCC's Summer program. This is a paid internship. Students will have the opportunity to teach and engage participants in the BBCC Summer Academy while taking an intensive 6 week class on social justice. History has proven that those communities that are able to create change are those who are empowered by the ability to control their own narrative and tell their own story. They are communities who discovered the power of their own voice. Interns in the BBCC program will teach one of six categories: graphic design, music, theater, video editing, art, and photography. Each category is a medium through which participants will learn to tell their own stories with the goal of the summer being to encourage young students from the Bronx to discover their own narratives and help them understand the power that is inherent with telling one's own story. This process will take them through the reflective model of seeing, analyzing, and acting. Additionally, interns work together as a team to tell the narrative of the summer. They will document the entire experience as part of their own reflective process.

The Mighty Soybean

00:58
Sometimes soil isn't very hospitable to newly germinating and growing seeds. Those little seeds need to exert a lot of force to break free of soil - especially poor soils like dense clay. These little seeds can exert a lot of pressure as they absorb water and start to germinate. To break free of plaster they need to exert at least 2,000 lbs. of pressure per square inch (based on the minimum compressive strength from the USG product specifications). Seeds only need two things to germinate - water and warmth. Plaster provides both of those. But the roots won't be able to penetrate through the plaster so be sure to transplant your seeds if you want them to actually grow. This activity is great for teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) concepts. It showcases the science of what seeds need to germinate. And you can incorporate engineering principles like the failing point of plaster or pounds of pressure. This activity and lesson plan can be found at www.IowaAgLiteracy.org. Full lesson plan can be found here: http://www.iowaagliteracy.org/resources/lesson-plans/resources/mighty-soybeans/Mighty%20Soybeans%20Lesson.zip

Make this dish your own with chorizo, flank steak, or salmon instead. Don't love black-eyed peas? Replace with your bean of choice. Once you add the orange juice to layer flavor and cut fat, you'll smell the delight of a finished product.
