Seed Germination | #aumsum #kids #education #science #seeds
Our topic for today is Seed Germination. The life of a plant begins from a tiny seed. The seed is protected by an outer covering called a seed coat. The seed contains a small baby plant called the embryo. Conditions required for the growth of a seed are Moisture, Warmth, Nutrient rich soil, Sunlight and Good quality seed. Once, these conditions are satisfied, the seed begins to grow. The seed absorbs water from the soil and provides moisture to the embryo. The plant cells inside the seed start duplicating, enzymes get activated and the embryo starts getting nourishment. The first sign of growth is a tiny root which comes out of the seed. With more and more nourishment, the embryo starts growing. Eventually, the growing plant bursts open through the seed coat in search of sunlight to start its own process of photosynthesis. Once the seed coat falls off, the root starts growing downwards to anchor the seed and to search for more food and nutrients from the soil. Meanwhile, the shoot also starts growing upwards towards the light. Soon, we see a baby plant with tiny leaves. This process of the growth of a seed into a plant is called germination.

Sprouting Peas - A Growing Experiment
MUN Botanical Garden staff shows how to sprout peas in a plastic cup. This is a quick and easy project that shows off the growth of a pea (or any other large seed). Watch as the seed first takes root and then sends up a beautiful green shoot. A wonderful way to familiarize beginner botanists (both young and old) with the different parts of a germinating seed.

Seed Germination Necklaces
Seeds only need two things to start to germinate: water and warmth. Corn and soybeans work great for this experiment because corn is a moncot and beans are dicots. Corn is a type of grass and so only has one cotyledon (hence monocot). Cotyledons are the embryonic leaf from which the first leaf or leaves appear from a germinating seed. Beans have two cotyledons and will have two leaves emerge. The water beadz provide the water for these seeds. Find them in your local garden store. If worn as a necklace, your body heat will provide a warm temperature for the seeds to germinate. The seeds should start to germinate in 3 to 5 days. It is best to transplant them to soil after the roots have started to form and the first leaves appear. In the field, corn shouldn't be planted until the soil temperature reaches at least 50 degrees F. Seeds will not germinate or germination will be poor if the temperature is below that. Soybeans require a soil temperature of at least 54 degrees F. This activity, other lesson plans, and other resources are available at www.IowaAgLiteracy.org Full lesson plan can be found here: http://www.iowaagliteracy.org/resources/lesson-plans/resources/seed-germination-necklaces/Seed%20Germination%20Necklaces.docx If you need corn or soybeans seeds to conduct this experiment in your classroom, please contact us at info@iowaagliteracy.org.

Lose 10 Pounds This Month: Food to Eat, Exercise to Do, Thoughts to Think
Would you like to watch and learn about Dr. Becky’s 4 Daily Habits for fast and healthy weight loss? http://www.drbeckyfitness.com/4dailyhabits For the full post on how to lose 10 pounds this month: http://www.drbeckyfitness.com/Lose10 You can lose 10 pounds this month in a healthy way, but your strategy must include the right foods, the right exercise, and the right attitude. In this video, I walk you through what to eat, which exercises to do, and how to think to keep your motivation strong all month long. Here’s a quick overview of the video: FOOD: Your diet will play a big role in getting the weight off by the end of the month, but you have to go about eating in the right way. Too often, when we try to lose weight quickly, we subtract junk foods, without adding healthy foods. This strategy will backfire, leaving you to fight hunger and cravings. The better approach is to think Add before Subtract. In other words, you want to add nutrient-dense foods that are naturally low in calories first, so you stay satisfied. Foods to add include vegetables and beans, and low-sugar fruits. These foods offer a high nutrient-to-calorie ratio, so they keep hunger and cravings away without putting on fat. Foods to eat in moderation include grains, meats, and whole fats (i.e. nuts, seeds, avocados). These foods contain needed nutrients, but are more calorie-dense than vegetables and beans. Foods to subtract include processed and sugary foods, which are filled the unhealthy trans fats and fat-storing sugars. EXERCISE: With your diet under control, you can turn to exercise for added weight loss, just be careful not to overdo it. Adding too much exercise at once, will stimulate your appetite, and work against your overall goal. For exercise this month, start exercising at a level that is just above your comfort level, and then gradually increase your time and intensity as the weeks goes on. ATTITUDE: Attitude is everything. Remind yourself that motivation is like a pendulum. Daily, you will swing back and forth between periods of low and high motivation. When your motivation is low, tell yourself that, ‘This too shall pass.’ For more free weight loss resources from Dr. Becky, watch her 7-Day Junk Food to Super Food Challenge Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-SfMOm8Y6s Watch her video series that shares 4 Daily Habits that give your body no choice but to lose weight: http://www.drbeckyfitness.com/get-the-free-video-series/ _________________________________________ WEBSITE: http://DrBeckyFitness.com FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/DrBeckyFitness/ PINTEREST: http://www.pinterest.com/DrBeckyFitness INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/DrBeckyFitness/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/DrBeckyFitness GOOGLE +: https://plus.google.com/+BeckyGillaspy

Bean Experiment
I experimented growing 4 varieties of pole beans this year trying to maximize food density by spacing our rows 18" apart. While we got a bountiful harvest it was difficult maintaining and harvesting having the rows so close together. Next year we plan in double our spacing to 72". Some additional information: This plot of beans provided fresh green beans daily for 4+ months. There was more than enough to blanch and freeze, we filled our freezer completely. After the freezer was full we let them dry on the pole. Of the 4, Kentucky Wonder produces the best dry bean, which is great for soups and chili's. So my picks are : Fortex and Purple King for frying and casseroles. Kentucky wonder for soups and chilis. Space your rows 60-72" apart. Don't use trellis netting, just use twine.
