Benadryl for Allergic Reactions - Should You Take It?

02:34
Is benadryl the best option for treating allergic reactions? Dr. Dean Mitchell, Board Certified Allergist in NYC, discusses why Benadryl is not the best antihistamine for allergic reactions. For so many years people have thought that they should take Benadryl for allergic reactions. It's common to get Benadryl in the ER when you are having an allergic reaction and when people go to the drugstore they think Benadryl is the best antihistamine. Just because Benadryl is the oldest antihistamine doesn't make it the best one to use when you have an allergic reaction. I rarely recommend using Benadryl for allergic reactions. Today, there are better choices when you have an allergic reaction such as: Claritin This is a non-sedating antihistamine which means it doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier so it doesn't make you tired. It also works quickly. In fact, today they have a Claritin ready-tab which you just put on your tongue and it works instantly. You can carry around these tabs in your wallet if you are prone to getting allergic reactions you can't predict. Allegra Allegra may be even stronger than Claritin. It lasts longer and also doesn't affect your blood-brain barrier so you don't get tired. This is one of my favorite antihistamines for patients who get chronic allergies. Zyrtec This is based on an older antihistamine called hydroxyzine which is very powerful. Zyrtec is probably the most powerful of all the antihistamines listed but it can be sedating. People can get tired from it and as a result it's not always tolerated well. It is not always my first choice for allergic reactions. It can also last in your body for several weeks. Best Option - Sublingual Allergy Drops If you are really suffering from chronic allergies frequently and you want to get to the underlying problem and treat it more permanently something like sublingual allergy immunotherapy drops can really make a difference. I suggest that you see your doctor and you ask them if you have been allergy tested if they can arrange for you to get allergy drops so you can have lasting allergy protection. ___________________________________________ Expert: Dr. Dean Mitchell, M.D. Website: http://www.mitchellmedicalgroup.com Location: NYC & Long Island Bio: For over 25 years, Dr. Mitchell has specialized in allergies, candida and immunology in NYC. Side effects due to prolonged use of antihistamines - Dr. Sriram Nathan

01:58
Now, anti-histamines, they are one of the most safest medicines which are available in the market and most of them are quite safe. Patients have been using it for years together without causing much of side effects. But any tablet, for a matter, even a simple paracetamol can cause side effects. So you have to be really careful when you are using it, and you should do it only under the guidance or the supervision of an ENT doctor or a doctor who has given you those anti-histamines. In any case most of the anti-histamines have side effects which are categorized into acute and chronic. The acute side effect can be sedation, you have loss of concentration and you feel little weak and tired. Usually you get used to it in a couple of days. There can also be little dryness, you feel itching in the throat and stuff like that, that’s very common. The chronic side effects can range from dryness in the throat, you may end up with weight loss or sometimes even weight gain, you may end up with constipation, drowsiness which may even prolong. But these are all very rare side effects. Nowadays we have the modern generation anti-histamines like the levocetrizine or the fexofenadine. These anti-histamines have got relatively less amount of side effects. In any case, whenever we are taking any anti-histamines and especially if you are taking for a long time make sure that you will consult your doctor who will have a look at of all the body functions. He will say if your liver and other functions are perfectly normal and if otherwise you have no problem in the body like no sugar, no hypertension, or any other problem, then there won’t be any problem in taking anti-histamines.

Claritin

20:50
Whether Claritin now available as the generic loratadine actually works at the currently approved dose remains an issue. Originally an FDA examiner believed no less than 40 mg was necessary to provide effective relief of allergic nasal symptoms. Unfortunately at this dose drowsiness occurs and the label could no longer boast of non-sedating qualities. At the current daily dose of 10mg, the drug works somewhat better than a placebo. For most people troubled by seasonal or perennial allergies, Flonase, Rhinocort or Nasonex remain more effective.

Men taking these drugs weighed an average of 213.4 pounds compared to 192.5 pounds for those not taking these drugs. Men taking these drugs were 70% more likely to be overweight than those not taking these drugs. Women taking a prescription H1 antihistamine weighed an average of 9.7 pounds more than women not taking these drugs according to data from the 2005–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Women taking these drugs weighed an average of 175.9 pounds compared to 166.3 pounds for those not taking these drugs. Women taking these drugs were 21% more likely to be overweight than those not taking these drugs. Conclusion: H1 Antihistamines may be causing weight gain “Several H1 antihistamines are available without a prescription, so the actual number of individuals in the sample taking an H1 antihistamine is unknown,” the authors note. “An estimated 50 million people in the United States suffer from allergies, with approximately 35–50% of them using over-the-counter antihistamines; thus, this analysis may be underestimating the impact of antihistamines. “Because H1 antihistamines are increasingly accessible, they may be contributing to weight gain and increased development of metabolic syndrome. “Although causation cannot be attributed to prescription H1 antihistamine use only based on this cross- sectional analysis, it is imperative to explore the relationship between increased antihistamine use, obesity, and underlying risk factors.” REFERENCE Ratliff J, Barber J, Palmese L, Reutenauer E, Tek C. What is the treatment for hay fever?

05:13
What is the treatment for hay fever? What is the treatment for allergies? Readers Comments 1 Share Your Story Avoidance of identified allergens is the most helpful factor in controlling allergy symptoms. Attempts to control the environment and avoidance measures often significantly aid in resolving symptoms. However, allergy avoidance is often not easy. A thorough discussion with your physician is needed, and control measures may be required daily. If avoidance is not possible or does not relieve symptoms, additional treatment is needed. Many patients respond to medications that combat the effects of histamine, known as antihistamines. Antihistamines do not stop the formation of histamine, nor do they stop the conflict between the IgE and antigen. Therefore, antihistamines do not stop the allergic reaction but rather protect tissues from the effects of the allergic response. The first-generation antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton), dimenhydrinate (Dramamine), brompheniramine (Dimetapp and others), clemastine fumarate (Tavist, Allerhist), and dexbrompheniramine (Drixoral) frequently cause mouth dryness and sleepiness as side effects. Newer, so-called "non-sedating" or second-generation antihistamines are also available. These include loratadine (Claritin), fexofenadine (Allegra), cetirizine (Zyrtec), and azelastine (Astelin Nasal Spray). In general, this group of antihistamines is slightly more expensive, has a slower onset of action, is longer acting, and induces less sleepiness. Many of these medications are available over the counter. Discuss with a physician other antihistamine side effects that occasionally occur (for example, urine retention in males, fast heart rate, and others). Always discuss the potential side effects of any medication with a physician and/or pharmacist. Decongestants help control allergy symptoms but not their causes. Decongestants shrink the swollen membranes in the nose and make it easier to breathe. Decongestants can be taken orally or by nasal spray. Decongestant nasal sprays should not be used for more than five days without a doctor's advice, and if so, usually only when accompanied by a nasal steroid. Decongestant nasal sprays often cause a so-called "rebound effect" if taken for too long. A rebound effect is the worsening of symptoms when a drug is discontinued. This is a result of a tissue dependence on the medication. Some people with allergies need specialized prescription medications such as corticosteroids, cromolyn, and ipratropium (Atrovent) nasal sprays. These nasal sprays do not cause the rebound effect noticed with decongestant nasal sprays. Cortisone nasal sprays are very effective in reducing the inflammation that causes swelling, sneezing, and a runny nose. Cortisone can also decrease the formation of many chemicals involved in the allergic response. Many cortisone nasal sprays are on the market through prescription only. Intranasal steroids are typically the first-line medications for patients suffering from persistent allergies. Fluticasone (Flonase) is one medication available over the counter. Cromolyn is also an anti-inflammatory medication available over the counter. Although cromolyn is not as potent as cortisone, it is very safe. Cromolyn must be used well in advance of anticipated allergy symptoms to be useful. Ipratropium (Atrovent) nasal spray is available for drying a wet runny nose. It will not prevent allergic reactions. This is an atropine derivative and although usually very safe, a person sensitive to atropine should be cautious when taking this drug. Montelukast (Singulair) is an inhibitor of leukotriene action, another chemical involved in the allergic reaction. This medication is used for therapy of asthma and has also been approved for treatment of allergic rhinitis, but it is not a first-line therapy. It has been shown to be most effective in those for whom significant congestion is a primary complaint. It may also be used in some cases together with antihistamines. If antihistamines and nasal sprays are not effective or not tolerated by the patient, other types of therapy are available. Allergy desensitization or immunotherapy may be needed. Allergy immunotherapy stimulates the immune system with gradually increasing doses of the substances to which a person is allergic. Because the patient is being exposed to the allergy-inducing substance, an allergic reaction can occur and this treatment should be supervised by a physician. Although the exact way allergy desensitization works is not completely known, allergy injections appear to modify or stop the allergic reaction by reducing the strength of the IgE and its effect on the mast cells. This form of treatment is very effective for allergies to pollen, mites, cats, and especially stinging insects (for example, bees).

Below you will find my Check List. which includes Prescription Medications, Over the Counter Medications and First Aid items. In Preparation, it's important to also think about VACCINATIONS -Depending on where you travel you may come in contact with diseases that are rare in the US or Canada, or Europe, like Yellow Fever. -One of my biggest pieces of advise is to plan ahead. Know what routine vaccinations you should have and what additional vaccination you need, to insure you have enough time before your departure date, to receive all doses of required vaccines, should it be a vaccine that is administered in a series of shots, like Hep A (6 months between shots) or Hep B. For regular vaccination, it’s suggested to get vaccinated 4-6 weeks prior to departure which gives the vaccine time to start working, so you are protected while traveling. -The best place to find the latest and most up to date information on routine vaccinations “all travelers” should have, vaccinations “Most travelers” should get, and vaccinations “some travelers” should get, is the CDC website. You can find the latest travel updates and notices and/or disease outbreaks. https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel -You should talk to your doctor and/or a travel clinic doctor about getting CDC recommended vaccinations as they vary by country. Are you suffering from Allergies? Take meds or do this

03:56
Hello everybody. So, I wanna talk to you about allergies. This is allergy season, it's April and there's pollen and people are sniffling like crazy. And I know it's affecting their lives, I know you may be one of those people who's suffering from this and you're thinking, "Oh, you know, this is the time when I start taking my over-the-counter antihistamines. And they seem to work well because now they've got these like daytime formulas that don't make you so drowsy, and I'll just take that and I'm okay, I get through the day." But, let me ask you a question, when you take those over-the-counter medications, are you curing the allergies or are you suppressing the symptoms of these allergies? It's something to think about, because antihistamines by definition, stop the effect of histamine. Well, let's talk about that for a second. Histamine gets released in response to something that's an allergen. So, let's just use pollen as an example. You get exposed to pollen, it goes into your nasal passages. You have these cells in your immune system, they float around in your blood, they are called mast cells, and they release histamine. Then the histamine in your blood has receptors in different body parts. And there's three types of receptors, actually. One of those receptors when activated by histamine will cause you to produce more mucus. You get stuffy, congested, itchy and watery eyes, and you know better than I do because I don't have allergies, but some of you do and you know what that feels like and it's not a very good feeling. I'm assuming it's kinda like when you have a bad cold and you get really stuffy and congested. That's one of the receptors. But believe it or not, there's two other receptors. And the second receptor's on your gastrointestinal tract. It's in your stomach. And when that receptor gets activated by histamine, you get a lot of indigestion and acid reflux and digestive problems. And so, if during springtime, allergies come around, you're not getting congested but all of a sudden your heartburn is worse, it's still the histamine, we just didn't know it was histamine. And then the third type of receptor, H3, the third histamine receptor, when histamine hits that one, that's when you get anxious and depressed or irritable, which is why you look at the trends when allergy medication prescriptions rise, antidepressant prescriptions rise also, which is directly related and correlated. So now, here's the part about antihistamines, when you take those over-the-counter antihistamines, they only stop, they only block the H1 receptor, not the two and the three, which means you could stop the congestion but you still get the histamine response of indigestion and heartburn, or irritability, anxiety, depression, or if you're unlucky, all three. And that's not so good. So, my recommendation for you would be to come to a consultation with us at the office. And we'll talk to you about how to stop those mast cells from producing the histamine. There're supplements that can do that. It takes a little bit time, but over the next few years your mast cells won't produce histamine anymore in response to pollen and the other allergens. Secondly, there are things that help with symptoms that don't block the receptors, but they actually make your liver pull the histamine out of your blood and excrete it from your body, kind of like a detoxification process of histamine which works really well. Again, that's a different type of supplement that we can use. And the more severe your symptoms are, the more variety we have on getting rid of those symptoms while the other supplements starts to work on reducing production of histamine. So instead of blocking the receptor, let's reduce the body's production of histamine and let's teach your liver how to pull that histamine out of your system, so it doesn't harm you and affect you. So you can enjoy your spring because you deserve it.

Health Check: Spring allergy season kicks into high gear

01:45
This is an ironic time if you're a seasonal allergy sufferer. On the one hand, you're probably excited about the end to the long winter, but on the other hand, you're also feeling miserable because spring is in full bloom. "We're starting to see it. It was definitely delayed from what we would typically see with the delayed snowpack as the snow started to melt," said Dr. Melody Mendiola at the HCMC Brooklyn Center Clinic. "I think we did see some mold issues early on, but now it's starting to be more of the general pollens." Dr. Mendiola says she started seeing more people come in with allergy symptoms about two weeks ago. It's the result of different environmental triggers in the air such as dust, mold, grass and tree pollen. However, it's tree pollen that doctors say is the biggest culprit right now. Experts recommend that allergy sufferers be careful if they hear reports of high pollen counts, otherwise they should find a good over- the-counter antihistamine. "If you know you get spring allergies, you probably want to start taking the medications even before it gets into full blast, just to make sure you have the medications on board," Dr. Mendiola said. "And just sort of plan to take it now through, probably, at least until mid to late June." Some of the medications Dr. Mendiola recommends are Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec and Benadryl. It should take about a week to find out which medication is most effective for you.
