It definitely has a sexy tone to it right? Project… I just love the way it sounds. I wonder how cool it must sound in French. Proje… Well, project is a temporary endeavor to create a unique solution. Yeah that’s operations. No Well, the difference between a project and operations is fairly simple. A project ends. So, it’s temporary. You implement your project, you close it, you create a unique product/service/ or whatever outcome you wanted then you are done. Whereas in operations, it’s on-going and repetitive. You may have also heard about the terms program and portfolio. Let me just quickly explain them here. Program is multiple projects put together. Combined. And Portfolio is similarly. Multiple programs put together. So, it’s project, program, portfolio. Now before I go further, and dive deep. You need to understand something crucial. To run any project, you need 2 methodologies. The first one is a project life cycle and the second one is project management process. Most people confuse these 2. And if these are not clear, you can kiss the PMP certification goodbye. It’s absolutely amazing how many content creators in YouTube confuse these two. They are not interchangeable. You cannot afford to confuse a project life cycle with a project management process. Don’t worry I am going to make it very simple for you. Let’s start with Project Life Cycle. Project Life Cycle is unique to a project, to an industry, to your needs. It’s highly customizable. Think of it like this; a human development is a project. So, your life cycle is; 1) Conceiving 2) Birth 3) Childhood 4) Teenage hood. Teenage hood. Is that a word? Teenaging? 5) Adulthood 6) And death Easy stuff right? So, now if it was an IT project. I am not an IT but it would like something like this; High-level design Detailed Design Coding Testing Installation And Turnover This is project life cycle. The term cycle is a bit confusing here. I think. But who knows. Cook spoke as part of his class reunion at the school.(www.fuqua.duke.edu) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- APPLE CEO AND FUQUA ALUM TIM COOK TALKS LEADERSHIP AT DUKE Tim Cook spoke to students and alums when he returned for his 25th reunion "Explore everything. Push the corners of your mind. Just get on this kind of continual learning roller coaster and see what happens." This was among the advice Apple CEO Tim Cook shared with students at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business on April 26th. Back on campus for his 25-year reunion, Cook took part in an hour-long dialogue with Fuqua Dean Bill Boulding and the students in a jam-packed Geneen Auditorium buzzing with excitement to hear from the leader of the world's most profitable company. The Apple CEO has embarked on a career far different than he had envisioned after graduating from Fuqua's Evening Executive MBA program in 1988. "For me the journey was not predictable at all. You have to find your own north star and stay with your north star." As 450 Daytime MBA students prepared to graduate, Cook advised the students to heed Abraham Lincoln's words of wisdom: "I will prepare and someday my chance will come." Cook shared the three keys to his leadership at Apple: people, strategy, and execution. "If you get those three right the world is a great place." Students were able to get a unique glimpse into Cook's motivation, inspiration and leadership role models. Raised in the south and a witness to racial injustice, Cook described his admiration for Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Junior's bravery in risking their lives to fight for what they believed in. He has just three photos in his office: two of Kennedy and one of King. Cook was asked when to follow strict principles of business theory and when to break the rules. His response stressed the importance of risks and learning from failure. "You should rarely follow the rules. What Fuqua teaches you so well is how to learn and how to collaborate. Write your own rules." This message resonated with first-year MBA student Shelby Hall. "I know this follows Steve Jobs' belief that Apple creates products which consumers didn't ever know existed," she said. "It was interesting to hear Tim Cook's perspective on how we should balance writing our own rules while applying the foundations of business taught here at Fuqua." Cook also spoke about some of his recollections from Fuqua. "The people made it an incredible experience. It was great for me to see how bright people approached solutions in different ways." First-year MBA student Juan Danzilo says Cook's willingness to share his experiences shows a deep commitment to Fuqua. "Tim Cook's presence reflects Fuqua's sense of community. His humility and eloquence is admirable. It certainly was a unique opportunity for MBA students to hear from such an inspirational leader."

An example of a PDP included later in this GUIDE, and should be read in conjunction with the requirements outlined below. This task is relatively short, succinct and designed to be helpful in evaluating your leadership development. It enables you to reflect upon your recent experience and to focus on the next stage of your training and development. Creating your PDP has three stages as follows: a. Stage 1 – Personal Analysis. The first stage is designed to analyse your strengths and weaknesses. You will be able to draw heavily upon your career and the outcomes of courses that you may have attended. These should be supplemented by the perceived opportunities that will have been derived from your experience and any threats to your continued success. b. Stage 2 – Setting Goals. This involves setting new and clearly definable goals for yourself which are measurable. The example PDP provides clear guidance on identifying these. You will need to consult your immediate superior (your first reporting officer/line manager) c. Stage 3 – Personal Objectives. This stage involves setting out your personal objectives. These can also be set in context within your civilian employment as shown in the example, which will be helpful in reinforcing its value. Example of a Personal Development Plan Mr A is a 25 year old graduate working for a well-known mobile telecommunications company. He is 2 years into their graduate recruitment programme. He joined the organisation while at university and transferred to his current department following graduation. After a year he was encouraged to enter a managerial leadership and management development programme. He re-joined his department as a junior manager. His employer is supportive and has been reasonably flexible and supportive in making allowances for the additional time off work to complete all the training modules. Once properly qualified and with more experience, he is keen to take on more responsibility and be seconded to another part of the company. The example PDP is set out over the following page PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN (EXAMPLE) Name: Mr A Department: Organisation: Date Personal Development Plan Completed: Part 1 – Personal Analysis Before setting your short medium and long term personal development plans, you should conduct a personal analysis: Eg - What are my strengths and weaknesses? What external opportunities or threats might affect any plans I might make? Strengths Areas for further development My personal administration in the company and basic skills are good and my detailed knowledge is generally sound for my level of training. I gained confidence from proving that I could cope with the pressures of the L and M course, even with sleep depravation. I was assessed to be composed during practical work and provided clear direction. Having the opportunity to lead a team over an extended period of time, I demonstrated that I have the ability to provide clear direction and manage people to achieve specific tasks whilst under pressure. It was difficult to maintain the work/life balance and maintain my physical fitness standards during academic studies. As a result I have lost some physical fitness. I need to take more time in planning a task thoroughly before briefing my subordinates. I provide the solution not present the problem. My understanding of the estimate planning process is still superficial in places and requires more detail. In order to build my confidence in command I need more experience of team management in different scenarios Opportunities Threats Demonstrate to my employer that I have had both structured management and leadership training and Balance work and personal commitments. 3 experience of leading teams to achieve specific tasks. Also to highlight that I have been exposed to a more structured approach to analysing problems which will assist me in providing clear solutions will be of value to the quality of my work for the company I work for. This activity provides a space for renewal in a hectic business environment to achieve a better work life balance allowing me to be refreshed and more focused at work. I can call on the support of my line manager to give me guidance on personal development. The Business Model Canvas - 9 Steps to Creating a Successful Business Model - Startup Tips The Business Model Canvas, is a strategic management and entrepreneurial tool. It allows you to describe, design, challenge, invent, and pivot your business model. The Business Model Canvas is comprised of 9 key segments: The left hand section of the Business Model Canvas is the Infrastructure section and comprises three key areas: Key Activities: The most important activities in executing a company's value proposition. Key Resources: The resources that are necessary to create value for the customer. Partner Network: In order to optimize operations and reduce risks of a business model, organization usually cultivate buyer-supplier relationships so they can focus on their core activity. The middle section of the canvas describes the business offering and is the value proposition delivered to different customer segments. Value Propositions: The collection of products and services a business offers to meet the needs of its customers. According to Osterwalder, (2004), a company's value proposition is what distinguishes itself from its competitors. The value proposition provides value through various elements such as newness, performance, customization, "getting the job done", design, brand/status, price, cost reduction, risk reduction, accessibility, and convenience/usability. The value propositions may be: Quantitative – price and efficiency Qualitative – overall customer experience and outcome The right hand side of the Business Model Canvas describes the customers, the channels through which you deliver services and and the relationships you have with your customers. Customer Segments: To build an effective business model, a company must identify which customers it tries to serve. Various sets of customers can be segmented based on the different needs and attributes to ensure appropriate implementation of corporate strategy meets the characteristics of selected group of clients. Channels: A company can deliver its value proposition to its targeted customers through different channels. Effective channels will distribute a company’s value proposition in ways that are fast, efficient and cost effective. An organization can reach its clients either through its own channels (store front), partner channels (major distributors), or a combination of both. Customer Relationships: To ensure the survival and success of any businesses, companies must identify the type of relationship they want to create with their customer segments. The bottom section of the canvas describes the finances. Cost Structure: This describes the most important monetary consequences while operating under different business models. A company's DOC.
