How to: Measure Blood Pressure

04:09
An introductory video explaining how to manually measure blood pressure. In this video, we are sharing with you the auscultatory method of determining systolic and diastolic arterial pressures. The cuff is placed above the antecubital artery and the cuff is above the upper arm. The stethoscope is placed near the antecubital artery and no sound will be hear when there is enough pressure to close off the artery. When the pressure is slowly released, the sound of blood jetting through the vessel by the vibrations of the wall is called the Korotkoff sounds. The first sound is also the systolic pressure. The diastolic pressure is when a muffled quality occurs. Please note that the sound is often overestimated because sound can still be heard even after deflation of the cuff. This method is not 100% accurate but will give values within the 10% range. This information was written in the Textbook of Medical Physiology by Guyton and Hall. **Disclaimer: we are not medical professionals.

Vital Signs- For Beginners

03:20
A how to video for the 6 vital signs: pain, temperature ,pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation There are multiple scales used for pain, whichever one you use, make sure you explain it to the client. Pain is whatever the client says it is. The tympanic and rectal sites for temperature are both about half a degree higher than oral and axillary(armpit) temperature is about half a degree cooler than oral temp. The 'normal' temperature range is between 36 and 38 degrees Celcius. this vary's based on age, time of day... The sites for pulse shown in this video in order of appearance are radial, brachial, carotid and pedal. The radial and pedal pulses, among others, are used to assess peripheral(away from the center of the body, eg. the limbs) circulation. The apical pulse is auscultated (listening to sounds produced within the body) with a stethoscope in the fifth intercostal space about 2 inches from the sternum. The thumb has a pulse so if it is used in assessing a clients pulse you can mistake your own pulse for the clients. Too much pressure can obliterate the artery and with too little pressure you will not be able to feel the pulse. A 'normal' adults pulse should be between 60 and 100 beats per minute. Below 60 bpm is known as bradycardia and above 100 bpm is tachycardia. As you gain experience in counting respirations you may be able to combine this skill with another. A good time can be during temperature or pulse. You may be able to simply observe the movement of the chest or stomach instead of placing your hand on the client. It is best if the client is unaware you are counting respirations. Most adults take between 12 and 20 breaths per minute. When using the two step method wait a minute or so before doing the second step to prevent inaccurate readings. The palpated blood pressure should be done once a shift to make sure you are taking an accurate blood pressure and to prevent causing your client unnecessary discomfort. The width of the cuff should be 40 percent of the arm circumference and the bladder should cover 2/3rds of the limbs circumference. An improperly sized cuff will mean inaccurate readings. Blood pressure ideally should be below 120/80. Make sure the client is not wearing nail polish when assessing oxygen saturation, it will prevent the machine from getting an accurate reading. O2 saturation should be between 95 and 100 percent. palpation-examination of the body using touch, Berman, A., Snyder, S.J.,Kozier, B., Erb, G.L. (2008). Health Assessment. Treating High Blood Pressure

Once hypertension has been diagnosed the first step is to discuss ways to help the patient lower their blood pressure with a lifestyle approach. Some recommendations are a low-sodium diet, a diet rich in potassium, fruits and vegetables and and low in meat, increasing physical activity and losing weight. For some patients medical treatment might have to be initiated as well.

What is High Blood Pressure

03:16
http://bit.ly/bloodPressureNow What is High Blood Pressure Also known by the medical term hypertension, high blood pressure is measured in numbers based on the systolic and diastolic pressures of the blood. Systolic pressure measures the force of blood against the walls of the arteries as the heart beats, while diastolic pressure measures the force of blood on the walls of the arteries between heart beats, when the heart is relaxed. These two numbers are shown in sequence from top to bottom, with the systolic pressure measurement on top and the diastolic on bottom. For instance, a healthy blood pressure is 110/70, with a systolic pressure of 110 and a diastolic pressure of 70. It is now estimated that nearly one out of every three Americans has high blood pressure. Blood pressure is the measurement of how much force the flow of blood puts on the arteries. Although blood pressure rises and falls during the day depending on activity levels, eating habits and other conditions, when blood pressure regularly remains elevated, it is called high blood pressure. High blood pressure readings differ for everyone and are difficult to pin down, since our blood pressure rises and falls during the day, but a good healthy blood pressure is usually 120/80 or lower. A systolic pressure which consistently reads from 120 to 139, with a diastolic reading of 80 to 89, is considered pre-high blood pressure. Stage one hypertension is a consistent systolic reading of 140 to 159, with a diastolic reading of 90 to 99. Stage two is anything consistently over 160/100. When the blood pressure is high, it forces the heart to work harder than it should. The extra force of blood against the walls of the arteries can cause the arteries to harden. Also known as "the silent killer," this condition can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure or blindness. However, there are rarely any symptoms; the only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to have it checked. Blood pressure readings should always be viewed in regard to other conditions which may cause a temporary rise, including stress, fear, anger, fatigue, and anxiety at being in a doctor's office. High blood pressure can also be caused by cardiovascular and kidney disorders, neurological conditions, pre-eclampsia in pregnancy, and various medications. Hypertension does not discriminate; anyone can develop it, regardless of age, race or gender. The good news is that this condition can be treated and prevented. While there are many medications designed to lower blood pressure, there are also lifestyle changes which can help. Losing weight, exercise, a healthy low-fat diet, and consuming less sodium and alcohol will contribute to lowering high blood pressure. Always talk to your doctor before making changes in diet or exercise, and have your blood pressure checked regularly. Visit the website.
