How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. The fat in the food that you eat can help to aid in digestion and absorption. As fats take a long time for your body to digest, it is best not to take fish oil pills or eat a fatty meal pre-workout. This can cause digestive upset. Multivitamins: As these contain both water- and fat-soluble vitamins, take with plenty of water and some food with fat in it, but try not to take with dairy as this can reduce your absorption of zinc. You researched and choose good quality supplements. But now are you taking them at the right time and with the right foods or other supplements? Adjusting your supplement timing and learning how to match them up, could help you get a whole lot more out of these health helpers. Multivitamins contain an array of vital nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and amino acids. These vitamins can be fat soluble (like vitamins A, D E and K) or water soluble (like the B-complex vitamins and vitamin C). Fat-soluble vitamins are dissolved in fat, then delivered by your bloodstream. Excess vitamins are stored in your liver for future use. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water and aren’t stored by your body. They have to be replenished every day. Take your multivitamin within 30 minutes of a meal to help aid digestion and boost the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Don’t take your multivitamin too close to bedtime. Vitamins B12 and C, found in most multivitamins, can have stimulating, sleep-disrupting effects. Direct sun is one source of vitamin D; however, it’s easier for those with paler skin to produce vitamin D. A fair-skinned person can produce an adequate amount of vitamin D in 15 minutes of sunshine exposure, whereas a dark-skinned person could take up to two hours and that’s without sunscreen. Studies have shown that vitamin D3 decreases mortality. The body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium. Without enough vitamin D, one can’t form enough of the hormone calcitriol (known as the “active vitamin D”). This in turn leads to insufficient calcium absorption from the diet. Although vitamin D can be taken on an empty stomach, taking it with a meal that contains fats, such as dinner rather than breakfast may increase your absorption. Calcium supplements have long been synonymous with bone health. They’re also important for strong muscles and a healthy heart. A low intake of calcium and vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis in both women and men. Another group that may be deficient in calcium is nine- to 18-year-old girls. Spread out calcium intake, as the body can’t absorb a large amount all at once. Take no more than 500 mg at a time. Don’t take calcium with any other mineral supplements or with a multivitamin. If you’re on any medication, consult your health care practitioner before taking calcium; many medications compete with calcium for absorption. One of the most underrated minerals responsible for numerous cellular functions is magnesium. Magnesium is required for heartbeat and blood sugar regulation and healthy nerve and muscle functioning. Magnesium converts vitamin D into its active form so that it can help with calcium absorption. Since intestinal absorption tends to decrease with age, magnesium is essential for older adults. Magnesium supplements that can be applied to the skin are an option for people who find oral magnesium supplements irritate their intestinal lining. Leg cramps often experienced by pregnant women or at nighttime can respond well to topical magnesium as well. Take magnesium with food and apart from other minerals. Probiotics are all the rage because of their beneficial effects on the digestive and immune systems. To help ensure probiotics survive stomach acid for delivery to the intestines, researchers have developed a coating that is both heat and acid stable. The benefits of liquid probiotics is that liquids distribute healthy bacteria all along the digestive tract. However, most liquid preparations require refrigeration; otherwise, the supplement will lose its potency. Take probiotics with a meal containing healthy fats, or at least 30 minutes before the meal, for best absorption. Before taking an iron supplement, get a blood test performed by your health care practitioner. A blood test can determine the true level of iron in your blood and whether you need an iron supplement. Professional guidance is important, as excess iron intake can be harmful. Take iron with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, as vitamin C helps the body absorb iron in the gut and regulates iron uptake and metabolism. Take iron with food to reduce the risk of an upset stomach. Don’t take calcium supplements at the same time as iron supplements or iron-rich foods; calcium can decrease iron absorption. They are produced by big pharmaceutical companies, for instance, Centrum is a product of the Pharma giant Wyeth, while Bayer HealthCare of aspirin fame makes the One A Day line. Numerous supplements are also sold by Unilever, Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline and other big pharmaceutical firms, and a great part of them are high in artificial additives, synthetic flow agents, chemical colorings, and even imitation vitamin compounds, which cannot be completely processed by the body as it does not recognize them. These are some facts about supplements you need to know: Supplements and pills derived from whole foods treat many, but not all synthetic vitamins deficiencies. Numerous supplements, especially multivitamins, are not derived from edible foods but are a product of synthetically manufactured substances. Synthetic substances are often not absorbed well, and if in high amounts, they have disastrous effects. Long-term epidemiological evidence shows that typical multi-nutritional vitamins do not provide many health benefits. Dangerous Ingredients in Supplements: Yet, one of the most shocking facts about supplements is the one that they include GMOs, and what’s more, in excessive amounts! They are high in genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), toxic additives, aspartame, aluminum, and petroleum-derived artificial colors. All of these destroy the gut bacteria. The following list includes GMO Fillers(unless listed) which must be avoided in the supplements: GMO fed pork/beef gelatin. Soy lecithin. Modified food starch (corn). Corn starch. Whey/egg white protein from GMO-fed cattle/chickens. Hydrogenated soybean oil. Maltodextrin. Citric acid. Lactic acid. Ascorbyl palmitate. Xanthan gum. Natural flavoring. You should also stay away from the following toxins as well: Stearic Acid and Magnesium Stearate. Magnesium stearate is added to at least 90 percent of all vitamin supplements, and it is made by adding a magnesium ion to stearic acid. It has lubricating abilities, which is often the reason why it is added to supplements, and it prevents the sticking of capsules and pills to each other. Immunology published a study which showed that stearic acid could suppress the activity of our natural killer cells, T cells, and thus cause “ a loss of membrane potential and ultimately cell function and viability.” It is in fact sourced from hydrogenated oils like cottonseed oil, and it is often rich in pesticide residue, as it is genetically engineered. Titanium dioxide. This is a common pigment in vitamins and supplements, and the exposure to it can weaken the immune system. “Titanium dioxide has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen ‘possibly carcinogen[ic] to humans,’” explains the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety on its website. “This evidence showed that high concentrations of pigment-grade (powdered) and ultrafine titanium dioxide dust caused respiratory tract cancer in rats exposed by inhalation and intratracheal instillation.” Carrageenan. A warning issued by the Cornucopia Institute, a highly-effective food activism group, warns that it causes “gastrointestinal inflammation, including higher rates of colon cancer, in laboratory animals.” It also leads to gastrointestinal symptoms (spastic colon, irritable bowel syndrome/IBS, chronic diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, etc.), so you must avoid it in order to stay safe. Silicon dioxide. It is in fact just common sand, but it is used as an expensive filler, with the aim to make the bottle weigh more, and thus give the impression that it is of higher quality. Artificial colors. Artificial colors are related to various issues, from cancer to hyperactivity in children. I was taking protein creatine glucosamine prostate supports liver support milk thistle fish oils, c.l.a.s digestive enzymes, just a whole bunch of stuff most of which I did not need at all. Unfortunately nobody was around to tell me that all the supplements that I bought were just leading to one thing and that was expensive pee. Seriously guys the supplement industry is huge. And there are a lot of products that you're told will help you build muscle or help you burn fat 3 times as fast but the truth is that most of these supplements are just gonna burn a whole in your wallet and you going to wind up spending money that you could have spent on good food that would actually get you way more results. Today I want to go over the top five BS supplements that you should stay away from. Let's start with number one liquid ketones. the reason why I wanted to mention liquid ketones first is because they're becoming more and more popular right now. The whole idea is that liquid ketones are supposed to help you enter ketosis faster so liquid ketones are really growing in popularity especially with the keto diet crowd. Unfortunately somebody should tell them that this supplements claims are just straight up lies. In order for your body to go into ketosis you have to restrict carb intake enough for your body to begin converting fat into ketones which will be used as energy. Simply put you're using fat as your primary source of fuel when you don't have any carbs. This process of using ketones for energy known as ketosis essentially allows people to Target their fat stores and burn more fat. Ketosis happens naturally when you take glycogen or carbs away from the body not when you add something in. Randomly adding in ketones into your body will not put you into a state of ketosis. Again ketosis leads to ketones, but ketones don't lead to ketosis. So when your body is in ketosis that leads to Natural Ketone production for fuel not the other way around. Adding in extra ketones for no reason will just give you extra fuel to burn before you start burning your own fat stores. Which was the whole point of taking the liquid ketones to begin with. It's actually really really stupid when you think about it. Anyway...Next up are massgainers That's right Massgainers are a complete waste of money and here's why.... first of all mass gainers are not healthy at all. It's pretty much a little bit of protein powder filled with a ton of sugar. In fact they have so much filler sugar that most Mass gainers fail lab tests for protein. Meaning that they have less protein than what's written on the package. if you want the best bang for your buck then buy regular protein powder & use it to make your own mass gainer. you can create a way better Mass Gainer with ingredients that come from real food for your body to actually use. What you do is you take 2 scoops of protein, two tablespoons of peanut butter, two bananas, two servings of rolled oats & one to two tablespoons of coconut oil. Then you add in either water or whole milk if you really want to add extra calories. Then blend it with some ice & walla you have yourself a killer massgainer thats cheaper & much more effective than what you would get out of a commercial mass gainer. Next on the list are multivitamins & I know a lot of people are going to lose it when I explain this because some people really do think that taking a multivitamin everyday Will magically keep them healthy. don't worry about my diet ....I got my multivitamins. Sorry to break it to you but your multivitamin is only doing two things... one overfilling the pockets of supplement companies & two giving you expensive piss......thats pretty much it. 3 studies published in the journal....annals of internal medicine found that multivitamins & minerals didn't perform any better than a placebo pill in regard to People's Health. Meanwhile supplements like multivitamins continue to lead a multi-billion-dollar industry. First of all we don't even understand the full spectrum of vitamins minerals & antioxidants present in real fruits & vegetables. Like what I mean is we might know about half of them or maybe 10 percent of them or maybe 1 percent of them...we don't know. But even that aside when you take the vitamins that you think we need to stay healthy & you make a synthetic pill I don't care if it's in a veggie cap its foreign to your body..

These compounds are basically responsible for forming new skin. -Severe hair loss may be caused by low levels of vitamin D, especially in women and children, as research has shown. -65% of studies on the topic have found a connection between depression and low levels of vitamin D. -In 2014, researchers at Bern University Hospital in Bern, Switzerland found that 71% of those who suffer from chronic muscle pain have a shortage of vitamin D. -Adults aged 55 and older, office workers who spend most of their time indoors, people with darker complexions, people who have a high percentage of body fat are at a higher risk of developing a vitamin D deficiency. -If you’re vitamin D deficient but you’re not aware, it will progress and can lead to some nasty problems, including: soft bones in children and misshapen bones in adults, different types of cancer, cardiovascular, autoimmune, or neuromuscular diseases. -Fatty fish, cod liver oil, canned tuna, oysters, shrimp, mushrooms, are super rich in vitamin D. Vitamin D- The Most Important vitamin to be taking? part 1

BodyByPT.com A few years ago, I wrote a two part article called Essential Supplements. As it turns out, there should have been a third part to the article, as it appears I missed one supplement. And to be honest I may have missed the most important one- the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D. The first thing you need to understand with vitamin D is that it is less of a vitamin and more of a hormone, an EXTREMELY important hormone- even though most people just view it as a prevention of rickets. Dr. Michael Holick, one of the world’s leading researchers on the subject, says rickets is just the tip of the iceberg. Low vitamin D has been related to the following: · Osteomalacia – which is basically the adult form of Ricket’s · Osteoporosis – Women who took vitamin D lost less bone as they got older. Unfortunately, once you have osteoporosis vitamin D won’t build the bone back. · Osteoarthritis – Bone health goes hand-in-hand with vitamin D · Cystic Fibrosis · Multiple Sclerosis · High Blood Pressure · Systemic Sclerosis aka CREST syndrome · Type-1 & 2 Diabetes · Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome- The majority of women with PCOS are D deficient. · If you are vitamin D deficient you have an increased risk of heart disease. If you have heart disease and low D you have an almost 100% chance of having a heart attack. · Muscle weakness · Depression- this is personal to me. When I was younger, every winter around February I just wanted to kill myself- literally. I was smiling on the outside but felt horrible on the inside. Once I started supplementing with vitamin D, I was able to ‘tolerate’ the winter months. And now I rarely ever get sick- I don’t think I’ve been sick for the past 5 years, and I’ve had clients experience the same thing. When I see tragedies like Robin Williams, I always wonder if low vitamin D was a factor. Last month research out of Michigan State University found that low levels of vitamin D in the blood appear to be associated with suicide attempts. · Cancer – It’s an interesting observation is that people who live south of 32 degrees latitude (approximately Atlanta), have lower cancer rates than those who live north. Also the rate of survival is greater south of Atlanta than north of it. There are many more conditions I could add to that list but I think you get the idea. Our bodies don’t function properly without adequate Vitamin D. It is of prime importance, and yet according to Scientific America magazine nearly ¾ of people in North America are vitamin D deficient- it’s even scarier if you have dark skin like myself, just 3% of blacks sampled in 2004 had sufficient levels! 3%! The nutrient content of food is declining. Is it because of soil depletion, selective breeding, or... something else? When you ask sellers of vitamins why you should take vitamin supplements even if you eat a healthy diet, they will say because our food doesn't contain all the nutrients it once did. This is supposedly due to soil depletion, cold storage, food ripening off the vine, and global transport of out-of-season foods. And to an extent this is true. Foods contain the greatest amount of nutrients if they are eaten soon after they are harvested. An unexpected source of nutrient decline is the increasing amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It causes plants to grow faster and bulk up on carbs but at the expense of other nutrients, so in percentage terms the amount of nutrients are actually declining. For now this decline is modest so supplementing with vitamin pills is probably unnecessary for most people with a healthy diet but it may be a concern in future. Again, I’ll give you more details in a minute. Magnesium Most people do not obtain adequate amounts of magnesium in their diets and this is unfortunate because magnesium is one of the body’s most important minerals. It is required as a cofactor in hundreds of enzymatic processes within cells.
