How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. The fat in the food that you eat can help to aid in digestion and absorption. As fats take a long time for your body to digest, it is best not to take fish oil pills or eat a fatty meal pre-workout. This can cause digestive upset. Multivitamins: As these contain both water- and fat-soluble vitamins, take with plenty of water and some food with fat in it, but try not to take with dairy as this can reduce your absorption of zinc. I'm talking about potentially ditching your multivitamins, if you're not someone that actually needs it. This video came to light simply because a lot of people that have talked to and a lot of people that I've worked with, have had a very, very hard time letting go of their multivitamins. They take these multivitamins and they see them as their crutch. They see them as the end all be all and their link to healthy eating or the void fill from the nutrients that they're missing from their food. But the reality is there's a lot more to just popping a multivitamin and getting your vitamins and minerals in. So first off what I want to look at is the fact that 50% of Americans take a multivitamin. That is a lot, a lot of people that are misled. A lot of people are leading themselves to believe that they're getting all their vitamins and minerals and getting what they need from a simple pill. Also in reality, we have to look at how much money is being spent. We're talking like $11 billion dollars that people are spending on multivitamins. That's a lot of money. Okay, so let's talk about what is happening with a multivitamin and why it may not be the best thing for you. I'm not discounting it. I'm not saying that everyone should avoid taking a multivitamin. There are some subcategories of people that might want to take them, but I want to talk about some reality when it comes down to just popping that pill. First thing I want to look at is too many nutrients, okay? The simple thing is we have to look at this. If our bodies have the ability to take in all these minerals and all of these vitamins at once, don't you think there would be a food out there that truly encompasses all of them? You see, normally we have to eat different subcategories of foods to ultimately make up our nutrients. Now, if it was so easy as just popping a pill, I think that a lot more people would be really, truly healthy and if it was really possible to absorb all those vitamins and minerals at once, I think we'd have some foods that contain all those vitamins and minerals. We have to remember that we require specific enzymatic functions to truly synthesize and utilize different vitamins, minerals, and metals within the body. Each vitamin that we take in each mineral that we take in has a different process to actually being utilized and if we take them all in at once, we're not really allowing the body to do that efficiently. You're much better off knowing what is going to work for you and isolating specific vitamins and specific minerals for your type, for your bio individuality. So the thing we have to look at with multivitamins and we have this constant competition going on. Okay? We have constant competition of different minerals that sometimes need to be elevated and sometimes need to be lower, but we also have way too much of specific minerals. References: 1) Inc., G. Getting The Most Out Of Your Vitamin & Mineral Supplements and Absorbing the Vital Nutrients

You researched and choose good quality supplements. But now are you taking them at the right time and with the right foods or other supplements? Adjusting your supplement timing and learning how to match them up, could help you get a whole lot more out of these health helpers. Multivitamins contain an array of vital nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and amino acids. These vitamins can be fat soluble (like vitamins A, D E and K) or water soluble (like the B-complex vitamins and vitamin C). Fat-soluble vitamins are dissolved in fat, then delivered by your bloodstream. Excess vitamins are stored in your liver for future use. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water and aren’t stored by your body. They have to be replenished every day. Take your multivitamin within 30 minutes of a meal to help aid digestion and boost the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Don’t take your multivitamin too close to bedtime. Vitamins B12 and C, found in most multivitamins, can have stimulating, sleep-disrupting effects. Direct sun is one source of vitamin D; however, it’s easier for those with paler skin to produce vitamin D. A fair-skinned person can produce an adequate amount of vitamin D in 15 minutes of sunshine exposure, whereas a dark-skinned person could take up to two hours and that’s without sunscreen. Studies have shown that vitamin D3 decreases mortality. The body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium. Without enough vitamin D, one can’t form enough of the hormone calcitriol (known as the “active vitamin D”). This in turn leads to insufficient calcium absorption from the diet. Although vitamin D can be taken on an empty stomach, taking it with a meal that contains fats, such as dinner rather than breakfast may increase your absorption. Calcium supplements have long been synonymous with bone health. They’re also important for strong muscles and a healthy heart. A low intake of calcium and vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis in both women and men. Another group that may be deficient in calcium is nine- to 18-year-old girls. Spread out calcium intake, as the body can’t absorb a large amount all at once. Take no more than 500 mg at a time. Don’t take calcium with any other mineral supplements or with a multivitamin. If you’re on any medication, consult your health care practitioner before taking calcium; many medications compete with calcium for absorption. One of the most underrated minerals responsible for numerous cellular functions is magnesium. Magnesium is required for heartbeat and blood sugar regulation and healthy nerve and muscle functioning. Magnesium converts vitamin D into its active form so that it can help with calcium absorption. Since intestinal absorption tends to decrease with age, magnesium is essential for older adults. Magnesium supplements that can be applied to the skin are an option for people who find oral magnesium supplements irritate their intestinal lining. Leg cramps often experienced by pregnant women or at nighttime can respond well to topical magnesium as well. Take magnesium with food and apart from other minerals. Probiotics are all the rage because of their beneficial effects on the digestive and immune systems. To help ensure probiotics survive stomach acid for delivery to the intestines, researchers have developed a coating that is both heat and acid stable. The benefits of liquid probiotics is that liquids distribute healthy bacteria all along the digestive tract. However, most liquid preparations require refrigeration; otherwise, the supplement will lose its potency. Take probiotics with a meal containing healthy fats, or at least 30 minutes before the meal, for best absorption. Before taking an iron supplement, get a blood test performed by your health care practitioner. A blood test can determine the true level of iron in your blood and whether you need an iron supplement. Professional guidance is important, as excess iron intake can be harmful. Take iron with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, as vitamin C helps the body absorb iron in the gut and regulates iron uptake and metabolism. Take iron with food to reduce the risk of an upset stomach. Don’t take calcium supplements at the same time as iron supplements or iron-rich foods; calcium can decrease iron absorption. Vitamin D- The Most Important vitamin to be taking? part 1

BodyByPT.com A few years ago, I wrote a two part article called Essential Supplements. As it turns out, there should have been a third part to the article, as it appears I missed one supplement. And to be honest I may have missed the most important one- the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D. The first thing you need to understand with vitamin D is that it is less of a vitamin and more of a hormone, an EXTREMELY important hormone- even though most people just view it as a prevention of rickets. Dr. Michael Holick, one of the world’s leading researchers on the subject, says rickets is just the tip of the iceberg. Low vitamin D has been related to the following: · Osteomalacia – which is basically the adult form of Ricket’s · Osteoporosis – Women who took vitamin D lost less bone as they got older. Unfortunately, once you have osteoporosis vitamin D won’t build the bone back. · Osteoarthritis – Bone health goes hand-in-hand with vitamin D · Cystic Fibrosis · Multiple Sclerosis · High Blood Pressure · Systemic Sclerosis aka CREST syndrome · Type-1 & 2 Diabetes · Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome- The majority of women with PCOS are D deficient. · If you are vitamin D deficient you have an increased risk of heart disease. If you have heart disease and low D you have an almost 100% chance of having a heart attack. · Muscle weakness · Depression- this is personal to me. When I was younger, every winter around February I just wanted to kill myself- literally. I was smiling on the outside but felt horrible on the inside. Once I started supplementing with vitamin D, I was able to ‘tolerate’ the winter months. And now I rarely ever get sick- I don’t think I’ve been sick for the past 5 years, and I’ve had clients experience the same thing. When I see tragedies like Robin Williams, I always wonder if low vitamin D was a factor. Last month research out of Michigan State University found that low levels of vitamin D in the blood appear to be associated with suicide attempts. · Cancer – It’s an interesting observation is that people who live south of 32 degrees latitude (approximately Atlanta), have lower cancer rates than those who live north. Also the rate of survival is greater south of Atlanta than north of it. There are many more conditions I could add to that list but I think you get the idea. Our bodies don’t function properly without adequate Vitamin D. It is of prime importance, and yet according to Scientific America magazine nearly ¾ of people in North America are vitamin D deficient- it’s even scarier if you have dark skin like myself, just 3% of blacks sampled in 2004 had sufficient levels! 3%! But for the 99% of us, surely we are missing out on some of the micronutrients our body needs to function at 100%. Using a multivitamin can be a great tool to boost your overall health, and prevent you from getting sick. A multivitamin can strengthen your immune system, help you recover from a workout quicker, and even help your hair grow more quickly. Ideally we should be getting all of our nutrition from whole food sources such as plants, nuts, berries, fruits, vegetables, and animals. However, in today's fast paced world it can be difficult to focus on these basics. If you choose to use a multivitamin to get some of your nutrition in, just remember it is just a supplement. I would still try to get a lot of your vitamins from whole food sources, if I were you. Also, keep in mind not all multivitamins are created equal. Some may have better ingredients, and perhaps more importantly, some capsules/tablets are designed to be absorbed better than others. Have you ever taken a capsule and had it come out whole on the other end? Make sure you follow the directions on the multivitamin label so the capsule will absorb into your system properly! Unfortunately nobody was around to tell me that all the supplements that I bought were just leading to one thing and that was expensive pee. Seriously guys the supplement industry is huge. And there are a lot of products that you're told will help you build muscle or help you burn fat 3 times as fast but the truth is that most of these supplements are just gonna burn a whole in your wallet and you going to wind up spending money that you could have spent on good food that would actually get you way more results. Today I want to go over the top five BS supplements that you should stay away from. Let's start with number one liquid ketones. the reason why I wanted to mention liquid ketones first is because they're becoming more and more popular right now. The whole idea is that liquid ketones are supposed to help you enter ketosis faster so liquid ketones are really growing in popularity especially with the keto diet crowd. Unfortunately somebody should tell them that this supplements claims are just straight up lies. In order for your body to go into ketosis you have to restrict carb intake enough for your body to begin converting fat into ketones which will be used as energy. Simply put you're using fat as your primary source of fuel when you don't have any carbs. This process of using ketones for energy known as ketosis essentially allows people to Target their fat stores and burn more fat. Ketosis happens naturally when you take glycogen or carbs away from the body not when you add something in. Randomly adding in ketones into your body will not put you into a state of ketosis. Again ketosis leads to ketones, but ketones don't lead to ketosis. So when your body is in ketosis that leads to Natural Ketone production for fuel not the other way around. Adding in extra ketones for no reason will just give you extra fuel to burn before you start burning your own fat stores. Which was the whole point of taking the liquid ketones to begin with. It's actually really really stupid when you think about it. Anyway...Next up are massgainers That's right Massgainers are a complete waste of money and here's why.... first of all mass gainers are not healthy at all. It's pretty much a little bit of protein powder filled with a ton of sugar. In fact they have so much filler sugar that most Mass gainers fail lab tests for protein. What you do is you take 2 scoops of protein, two tablespoons of peanut butter, two bananas, two servings of rolled oats & one to two tablespoons of coconut oil. Then you add in either water or whole milk if you really want to add extra calories. Then blend it with some ice & walla you have yourself a killer massgainer thats cheaper & much more effective than what you would get out of a commercial mass gainer. Next on the list are multivitamins & I know a lot of people are going to lose it when I explain this because some people really do think that taking a multivitamin everyday Will magically keep them healthy. don't worry about my diet ....I got my multivitamins. Sorry to break it to you but your multivitamin is only doing two things... one overfilling the pockets of supplement companies & two giving you expensive piss......thats pretty much it. 3 studies published in the journal....annals of internal medicine found that multivitamins & minerals didn't perform any better than a placebo pill in regard to People's Health. Meanwhile supplements like multivitamins continue to lead a multi-billion-dollar industry. First of all we don't even understand the full spectrum of vitamins minerals & antioxidants present in real fruits & vegetables. Like what I mean is we might know about half of them or maybe 10 percent of them or maybe 1 percent of them...we don't know. But even that aside when you take the vitamins that you think we need to stay healthy & you make a synthetic pill I don't care if it's in a veggie cap its foreign to your body..

Iron is one of the most important micronutrients for endurance cyclists. It’s a crucial part of haemoglobin which transports oxygen around the body. Low iron levels are detrimental to performance. Iron comes in two forms - haem or non-haem. Haem iron comes from animal sources and non-haem from plants, which is less well absorbed. It’s important to be aware of foods that are high in iron and techniques to help increase absorption - because the iron story is not just about how much you consume, but also how well you absorb it. For example, vitamin C enhances absorption, whereas dietary fibre and the tannins in tea and coffee inhibit it. Moreover, because hepcidin (released by the liver to inhibit iron absorption) is elevated both after stress ie. exercise, iron will not be absorbed readily after training. B12 has many functions in the body, but is predominantly for the normal functioning of the brain and central nervous system and making red blood cells. Therefore, as with iron, it is a pretty essential part of a cyclist’s diet. A lack of B12 in the diet can also cause anaemia, but not the same as with iron. B12 deficiency anaemia causes the body to produce abnormally large red blood cells which lose their oxygen carrying capacity. Vitamin D, AKA the sunshine vitamin. Needed for the absorption of calcium and therefore needed to maintain bone mass; a deficiency has been associated with brittle bones, something lifelong cyclists might be susceptible to anyway. It has also been shown to play a vital role in the immune system, as well as improving muscular strength. Creatine is a chemical naturally found in the body, helping to release energy in anaerobic efforts. Because of that, it’s really popular among sprint based sports, but for certain endurance cyclists, it can also be beneficial. Road events can include repeated sprints of course, but the tradeoff is that it promotes storage of water and therefore you might put on a kilo or two of weight. Let me explain what an electrolyte is, if you ever take salt and put it in the water and dissolve it, the sodium and chloride disconnect and they become two separate minerals and that fluid is very electrically conductive. Basically electrolytes have to do with minerals that help conduct electricity in the body. They help with a lot of different things. As far as the electrolytes, it will be like potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, chlorides, and all those minerals. Potassium out of all the electrolytes is the one that we need in a very large quantities. Why is that? Why do we need potassium in a large amount? I am talking 4,700 mg to 6,000 mg every single day and that is equivalent to 7 to 10+ cups of salad or vegetables every single day. Let’s go dig further into exactly to why we need potassium. There are something in the body called sodium-potassium pump. It is built in a little protein connected to an enzyme, it forms a whole enzyme in the surface of your cells and you will have between 8,000 to 30million of this little tiny pumps and they are little generators that generate electricity to allow things to go through the cell so it take a lot of energy, in fact the energy of 1/3 of your diet goes to running those pumps. You also have another pump in the stomach called the hydrogen potassium ATPas, it is basically another pump that is built with a potassium that allows you to create stomach acid to help you digest. This pumps are also in the muscles, nervous systems and the pumps in the nervous system used about 60% of your body’s chloric intake of energy. In other words, these pumps are really critically important in exchanging nutrition, glucose, amino acids and other minerals to allow them to transport in other cell. Potassium is essential for building the pumps to allow these functions right here, they charge the cell electrically, so your cells have a certain voltage to allow things to work and go in and out of the cell to create different energy. In fact your energy that you have that controls your metabolism is controlled partly by these little pump. So it charges the cell electrically, it gives you energy. It helps the muscle contracts and relax because it allows calcium to go into the cell as well. It controls the transport of calcium. DR.
