How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. The fat in the food that you eat can help to aid in digestion and absorption. As fats take a long time for your body to digest, it is best not to take fish oil pills or eat a fatty meal pre-workout. This can cause digestive upset. Multivitamins: As these contain both water- and fat-soluble vitamins, take with plenty of water and some food with fat in it, but try not to take with dairy as this can reduce your absorption of zinc. Walking through the health supplements aisle for the first or fiftieth time can be confusing and overwhelming. Even if you eat a healthy diet it can be difficult to get the recommended daily amount of some nutrients. Investing in a strong nutritional foundation supported with quality supplements is part of a preventative medicine plan to stay healthy and vibrant. Following are the top three supplements worth your hard earned money for daily support of your health and wellness: 1. A good multivitamin with minerals   We have a huge need for protective, health-supporting nutrients to help us combat the daily assault of living in a polluted and stressful world. Think of a multivitamin as a little insurance policy to help protect your body against the vitamin and mineral shortfalls that can occur even in diets that are rich in healthy foods. By gifting your body multivitamins with minerals, you’ll also be optimizing cellular function, which helps make all your systems work consistently at their peak, instead of sputtering through the day.  When making a multivitamin selection, look for vitamins A, B, C, D, K and E as well as folate and the trace minerals such as zinc, selenium and chromium. Look for capsule form with an easily absorbed enteric coating versus harder-to-digest tablet versions. Always take your supplements with food to assist with absorption and prevent the queasiness that can sometimes occur on an empty stomach. 2.Probiotics  Probiotics are another good foundation supplement. Ever heard the saying, ‘Constipation is illegal’?  For so many reasons this is true. A good probiotic muscles out the bad bacteria and in doing so improves bowel movements and aids in digestion. Good gut bacteria can help us lose weight, enhance your immune system, decrease pain associated with inflammation as well as make some nutrients and vitamins that we need. Take a probiotic supplement with at least 15 billion live bacteria from one or more of the Lactobacillus family. It's generally best to take one capsule before bed. 3. A supplement high in omega-3 fatty acids Fish oil supplements are rich in the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are vital to good health. They support your body’s ability to prevent chronic diseases and help protect it against inflammation. They also promote a stronger immune system; cardiovascular, joint and vision health; strengthen skin, hair, and nails; and enhance nutrient absorption, metabolic function as well as attention, mood and memory skills. In short, fish oil is seriously good stuff, but as with Vitamin D, you can’t make your own omega-3 fatty acids, so you’ve got to get it from outside sources. Fatty fish and fish oil supplements are your best sources. Look for a brand that contains both EPA and DPA, the two key healthy fats in fish. Before taking any supplement you should check with your physician. Remember, the best way to supplement is with food that includes a rainbow selection of vegetables, lean meats and healthy fats.

You researched and choose good quality supplements. But now are you taking them at the right time and with the right foods or other supplements? Adjusting your supplement timing and learning how to match them up, could help you get a whole lot more out of these health helpers. Multivitamins contain an array of vital nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and amino acids. These vitamins can be fat soluble (like vitamins A, D E and K) or water soluble (like the B-complex vitamins and vitamin C). Fat-soluble vitamins are dissolved in fat, then delivered by your bloodstream. Excess vitamins are stored in your liver for future use. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water and aren’t stored by your body. They have to be replenished every day. Take your multivitamin within 30 minutes of a meal to help aid digestion and boost the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Don’t take your multivitamin too close to bedtime. Vitamins B12 and C, found in most multivitamins, can have stimulating, sleep-disrupting effects. Direct sun is one source of vitamin D; however, it’s easier for those with paler skin to produce vitamin D. A fair-skinned person can produce an adequate amount of vitamin D in 15 minutes of sunshine exposure, whereas a dark-skinned person could take up to two hours and that’s without sunscreen. Studies have shown that vitamin D3 decreases mortality. The body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium. Without enough vitamin D, one can’t form enough of the hormone calcitriol (known as the “active vitamin D”). This in turn leads to insufficient calcium absorption from the diet. Although vitamin D can be taken on an empty stomach, taking it with a meal that contains fats, such as dinner rather than breakfast may increase your absorption. Calcium supplements have long been synonymous with bone health. They’re also important for strong muscles and a healthy heart. A low intake of calcium and vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis in both women and men. Another group that may be deficient in calcium is nine- to 18-year-old girls. Spread out calcium intake, as the body can’t absorb a large amount all at once. Take no more than 500 mg at a time. Don’t take calcium with any other mineral supplements or with a multivitamin. If you’re on any medication, consult your health care practitioner before taking calcium; many medications compete with calcium for absorption. One of the most underrated minerals responsible for numerous cellular functions is magnesium. Magnesium is required for heartbeat and blood sugar regulation and healthy nerve and muscle functioning. Magnesium converts vitamin D into its active form so that it can help with calcium absorption. Since intestinal absorption tends to decrease with age, magnesium is essential for older adults. Magnesium supplements that can be applied to the skin are an option for people who find oral magnesium supplements irritate their intestinal lining. Leg cramps often experienced by pregnant women or at nighttime can respond well to topical magnesium as well. Take magnesium with food and apart from other minerals. Probiotics are all the rage because of their beneficial effects on the digestive and immune systems. To help ensure probiotics survive stomach acid for delivery to the intestines, researchers have developed a coating that is both heat and acid stable. The benefits of liquid probiotics is that liquids distribute healthy bacteria all along the digestive tract. However, most liquid preparations require refrigeration; otherwise, the supplement will lose its potency. Take probiotics with a meal containing healthy fats, or at least 30 minutes before the meal, for best absorption. Before taking an iron supplement, get a blood test performed by your health care practitioner. A blood test can determine the true level of iron in your blood and whether you need an iron supplement. Professional guidance is important, as excess iron intake can be harmful. Take iron with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, as vitamin C helps the body absorb iron in the gut and regulates iron uptake and metabolism. Take iron with food to reduce the risk of an upset stomach. Don’t take calcium supplements at the same time as iron supplements or iron-rich foods; calcium can decrease iron absorption. Before we start I have to bring up a misconception about supplements that many people have especially beginners. I want you to know that you could be someone that never took a supplement in your life and you can get way further then someone that takes supplements all the time . That's because success with building muscle and burning fat comes down to the intensity of your workouts and proper nutrition. supplements are only a tiny tiny percentage of your results. With that said supplements can be used to take advantage of that tiny extra push that they can give you. The problem that I hope to alleviate for you today is that there are tons of supplements out there while really there are only a couple of them that actually work. The first supplement that can help and is probably the most widely used supplement is protein powder. It may be hard for you to get enough protein from your diet and supplementing with protein powder can definitely help you hit your Macros. It's also great to have after a workout and when you're on the go. There are so many different types of protein that I have a whole video specifically about protein powders that I'll link up at the end. But I really like whey protein because it's cheap it tastes good and your body is very efficient with it. My favorite brand is Optimum Nutrition 100% gold standard whey isolate. If you're lactose intolerant consider an egg-based protein powder instead. The Next supplement that works very well is creatine. Different people will experience different results with different types of creatine and there are a lot of different types. Monohydrate is pretty much the most basic form of creatine, probably the cheapest, and it happens to be the most studied. Creatine monohydrate has proven itself in study after study so it's a pretty safe bet to start with. There are many other types like kre akalybn for example that claim to reduce bloating and claim to eliminate the need to cycle off of creatine. However not one type of creatine has the kind of backing with scientific evidence that monohydrate has. My favorite creatine brand is probably the cheapest one. It's just plain Monohydrate from Now sports. I used to take cell tech hardcore when I used to bulk and it would always help me put on some weight. However this was like 5 years ago so they've probably change the formula by now and the old formula used to have tons of sugar in it. Like I said now if I take creatine it'll be the plain monohydrate from Now sports. Next up are your stimulants and your supplements that give you energy. Nitric oxide, caffeine, vitamin b, and beta alanine again that's all you need. Nitric oxide will help give you a great pump during your workouts and will also give you a bunch of energy and help you squeeze out those last couple reps. Beta alanine will decrease lactic acid build-up in your muscles during your sets. Which will allow you to recover faster between your sets. By decreasing fatigue beta alanine will also be another great tool to help you push out extra reps. The one side effect of beta alanine is that youll feel pins and needles when you first start taking it but it'll become less intense over time. Caffeine and vitamin B you can take anytime.

BodyByPT.com A few years ago, I wrote a two part article called Essential Supplements. As it turns out, there should have been a third part to the article, as it appears I missed one supplement. And to be honest I may have missed the most important one- the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D. The first thing you need to understand with vitamin D is that it is less of a vitamin and more of a hormone, an EXTREMELY important hormone- even though most people just view it as a prevention of rickets. Dr. Michael Holick, one of the world’s leading researchers on the subject, says rickets is just the tip of the iceberg. Low vitamin D has been related to the following: · Osteomalacia – which is basically the adult form of Ricket’s · Osteoporosis – Women who took vitamin D lost less bone as they got older. Unfortunately, once you have osteoporosis vitamin D won’t build the bone back. · Osteoarthritis – Bone health goes hand-in-hand with vitamin D · Cystic Fibrosis · Multiple Sclerosis · High Blood Pressure · Systemic Sclerosis aka CREST syndrome · Type-1 & 2 Diabetes · Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome- The majority of women with PCOS are D deficient. · If you are vitamin D deficient you have an increased risk of heart disease. If you have heart disease and low D you have an almost 100% chance of having a heart attack. · Muscle weakness · Depression- this is personal to me. When I was younger, every winter around February I just wanted to kill myself- literally. I was smiling on the outside but felt horrible on the inside. Once I started supplementing with vitamin D, I was able to ‘tolerate’ the winter months. And now I rarely ever get sick- I don’t think I’ve been sick for the past 5 years, and I’ve had clients experience the same thing. When I see tragedies like Robin Williams, I always wonder if low vitamin D was a factor. Last month research out of Michigan State University found that low levels of vitamin D in the blood appear to be associated with suicide attempts. · Cancer – It’s an interesting observation is that people who live south of 32 degrees latitude (approximately Atlanta), have lower cancer rates than those who live north. Also the rate of survival is greater south of Atlanta than north of it. There are many more conditions I could add to that list but I think you get the idea. Our bodies don’t function properly without adequate Vitamin D. It is of prime importance, and yet according to Scientific America magazine nearly ¾ of people in North America are vitamin D deficient- it’s even scarier if you have dark skin like myself, just 3% of blacks sampled in 2004 had sufficient levels! 3%! As far as the electrolytes, it will be like potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, chlorides, and all those minerals. Potassium out of all the electrolytes is the one that we need in a very large quantities. Why is that? Why do we need potassium in a large amount? I am talking 4,700 mg to 6,000 mg every single day and that is equivalent to 7 to 10+ cups of salad or vegetables every single day. Let’s go dig further into exactly to why we need potassium. There are something in the body called sodium-potassium pump. It is built in a little protein connected to an enzyme, it forms a whole enzyme in the surface of your cells and you will have between 8,000 to 30million of this little tiny pumps and they are little generators that generate electricity to allow things to go through the cell so it take a lot of energy, in fact the energy of 1/3 of your diet goes to running those pumps. You also have another pump in the stomach called the hydrogen potassium ATPas, it is basically another pump that is built with a potassium that allows you to create stomach acid to help you digest. This pumps are also in the muscles, nervous systems and the pumps in the nervous system used about 60% of your body’s chloric intake of energy. In other words, these pumps are really critically important in exchanging nutrition, glucose, amino acids and other minerals to allow them to transport in other cell. Potassium is essential for building the pumps to allow these functions right here, they charge the cell electrically, so your cells have a certain voltage to allow things to work and go in and out of the cell to create different energy. In fact your energy that you have that controls your metabolism is controlled partly by these little pump. So it charges the cell electrically, it gives you energy. It helps the muscle contracts and relax because it allows calcium to go into the cell as well. It controls the transport of calcium. DR. A multivitamin can strengthen your immune system, help you recover from a workout quicker, and even help your hair grow more quickly. Ideally we should be getting all of our nutrition from whole food sources such as plants, nuts, berries, fruits, vegetables, and animals. However, in today's fast paced world it can be difficult to focus on these basics. If you choose to use a multivitamin to get some of your nutrition in, just remember it is just a supplement. I would still try to get a lot of your vitamins from whole food sources, if I were you. Also, keep in mind not all multivitamins are created equal. Some may have better ingredients, and perhaps more importantly, some capsules/tablets are designed to be absorbed better than others.
