Even though modern African diets may now be as miserably low in fiber as American diets, Africans still appear to have 50 times less colorectal cancer than Americans, our second leading cancer killer. I’ve previously suggested phytates may play a critical role as well (Phytates for the Prevention of Cancer http://nutritionfacts.org/video/phytates-for-the-prevention-of-cancer/). Resistant starch may be another player, since they cool down their corn porridge, and some of the starch can crystallize and effectively turn into fiber (the same reason why pasta salad and potato salad better feed our gut bacteria than starchy dishes served hot). I touch on it briefly in Bowel Wars: Hydrogen Sulfide vs. Butyrate (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/bowel-wars-hydrogen-sulfide-vs-butyrate/) but I have a lot more on resistant starch coming up. Resistant starch may also help explain Beans and the Second Meal Effect (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/beans-and-the-second-meal-effect/). Fiber may just be a marker for healthier eating since it’s only found concentrated in unprocessed plant foods. So the apparent protection afforded by high fiber diets may derive from whole food plant-based nutrition rather than the fiber itself (so fiber supplements would not be expected to provide the same protection). Colon cancer treatment with 5 natural Herbs. A diagnosis of cancer is never the news a patient wants to hear. Colon or colorectal cancer, in particular, is considered the third most common cancer in America. While you cannot control hereditary and some environmental factors, you can still lower your risk of cancer by making healthy diet and lifestyle choices. A well-planned diet can help prevent many cancers. Here's a list of some of the best foods and herbs to eat if your goal is to prevent and cure colon cancer. 1, Broccoli. Thanks to the nutritional value of broccoli this cruciferous vegetable may be one of the best foods you can eat if you want to reduce your risk of colon cancer. Broccoli contains virtually zero fat and ranks low on the glycemic index. It is a great source of carotenoids and vitamin C, and it also contains some vitamin E. Further, broccoli is one of the best dairy-free sources calcium. Last but not least, broccoli is a great source of indoles, natural compounds that are believed to inhibit cell proliferation of colon cancer cells. 2, Barley. The dietary fiber in barley increases bulk, softens stool, and shortens the transit time of fecal matter, thereby decreasing the risk of colon cancer. In addition, barley's fiber feeds the friendly bacteria in the large intestine, helping these bacteria to produce a short chain fatty acid called butyric acid, which helps maintain a healthy gut and prevent colon cancer. 3, Beets. Munching on red beets is a great way to reduce your risk of colon cancer. The fiber found in abundance in beetroots reduces the time the stool spends in the intestines, thereby limiting the colon's exposure to potential carcinogens. 4, Organic Red Peppers. Red peppers contain plenty of carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lycopene, which may help reduce the risk of colon cancer. But that's hardly their only colon cancer fighting feature. Red peppers are also a good source of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a natural compound that has been found to have anti-cancer properties. 5, Blueberries. Blueberries contain pterostilbene, an extraordinary colon cancer combating compound. Blueberries are one of the greatest health foods of all time and a great anti-cancer food. One animal study found that a compound called pterostilbene in blueberries can help prevent colon cancer. In this study, nine rats with colon cancer consumed a balanced diet including pterostilbene and another group of nine rats with colon cancer were fed a balanced diet with no pterostilbene. Give The Body What It Needs And It Can Fix Itself Dr. G talks with a caller (Sharon) from Illinois. She relates to us about the wonders of nutritional supplements. Her daughter-in-law’s father was previously diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer which has now spread into the liver. She told him about one of our products that is loaded with anti-oxidants and encouraged him to go gluten-free as Dr. G tells everyone to do. While the patient was on chemotherapy for three weeks, his blood tests result came out and the doctors were very surprised that his blood levels were fantastic. After the three weeks, the scan results showed that his tumor shrank half its size. She was so amazed and she feels that Dr. G and his team were really a blessing. In fact being a minister, she feels that God brought this nutritional program into her life. Accordingly, she continues that when she did some research about Dr. G and his team and she was so impressed that their focus was not about money, rather it was about people. She was so happy to see that they really cared about the people and that their program is for the people. Really, that’s why Dr. G’s motto is “Mission before commission.” It works both ways. They help people and at the same time it also works on their part financially because when people come in to consult him for a nutritional program for their health and they secure their health, they’re a customer for a lifetime. This in turn makes their wealth increase. Therefore, by not focusing on the money, they get more money. God is great. On the other hand, we just want to remind people that naturopathic doctors don’t treat cancer. All that they’re doing is providing people with nutritional supplements the intention of which is to bring their body into a state of health. Nevertheless, we know that it’s proven to work. We have heard of anecdotal reports like this all of the time. It’s becoming the rule rather than the exception. Hence, can you imagine how much further along we’d be with cancer if we’re spending our money on science based clinically verified holistic medical treatments for cancer? Surely, we’d be light years ahead of where we are right now. I mean, look at the results that we’re getting now even though we don’t treat cancer. In the United States it is illegal for anyone to treat cancer unless they are an oncologist. Day in and day out I'm telling my patients you've got to eat more fat and occasionally somebody might say "Well gee might that increase my risk for something like colon cancer?" and the answer is, it will not. As a matter fact according to the Journal of the American Medical Association it has no bearing on a person's risk for colon cancer. Let's take a look at the studies. Here's one published in the Journal American Medical Association back in 2006. Close to 50,000 women they were actually given a low fat diet (some of them) and the others were not given a low fat diet, they were followed for about 8.1 years and interestingly there is a slight increased risk for colon cancer in the group that actually ate the low fat diet compared to those who ate higher levels of fat. So the point is dietary fat is a good thing for you and is not associated with increased risk for colon cancer or breast cancer for that matter but importantly you've got to remember that we're not talking about all fats, we're not talking about trans fats. Those have got to be eliminated but increase your consumption of good fats things like olive oil, nuts, seeds, wild fish, if you want to eat beef make it grass-fed beef. Fat is your friend, it's good for your brain, it's good for your immune system and good for your heart.

The importance of proteins in the diet has been increasingly acknowledged over the last two decades as a result of new scientific findings in the field of nutrition. The value of proteins as an essential source of amino acids is well documented, but recently it has been recognized that dietary proteins exert many other functionalities in vivo by means of biologically active peptides. Inactive within the sequence of the parent protein, such peptides can be released by digestive enzymes during gastrointestinal transit (Bhat 2015). Defined as “a food component that can affect biological processes or substrates and, hence, have an impact on body function or condition and ultimately health”, a bioactive dietary substance should give a measurable biological effect in the range of doses it is usually assumed in the food and this bioactivity should be measured at a physiologically realistic level. Following this definition, milk, meat, fish and egg-derived bioactive peptides are their respective components that are able to influence some physiological functions, finally acting on body health condition. (Bhat 2015). By 1900, the surgeon William Banks had suggested that the increased incidence of cancer in his lifetime was related to the consumption of “butcher's meat” (Haddon 1900). More than 115 y later, a vast number of large-scale epidemiological studies have consistently shown a positive association between high red and/or processed meat consumption and a range of chronic diseases, including colorectal cancer, coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes (Hecke 2017). High intakes of red meat and poor digestion of meat are positively associated with elevated risk of colonic cancer. This may in part be mediated by the production of the carcinogenic N-Nitroso Compounds (NOCs) and heterocyclic amines as a result of cooking at high temperatures; however, the additional possibility remains that proteins which are incompletely digested may enable the generation of carcinogenic by-products in the large intestine (Patel 2013). Dietary differences in the world likely contribute to global variations in cancer cases. Meat is an important source of proteins and provides essential amino acids. It is one of the largest dietary sources of heme. Epidemiological and experimental studies have suggested that the high heme content in red meat is associated with several diseases, including heart diseases, diabetes and cancer. Red meat (beef, lamb and pork) has 10-fold high heme content as compared to white meat (chicken). Studies have shown that an increased risk of several types of cancer is associated with diets high in red meat. On the contrary, consumption of substantial amounts of green vegetables is associated with decreased risk of colon cancer, likely because vegetables contain low levels of heme iron. Below we provide an overview of recent epidemiological data showing the association of increased risk of cancer with high heme iron intake (Hooda 2014). A number of studies have demonstrated a positive association between high intake of red meat and colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the association between red meat intake and other cancer types such as gastrointestinal, lung cancer, pancreatic, breast and esophageal are understudied and less consistent (Hooda 2014). Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of death around the world and accounts for more than 1 million cases and 600,000 deaths each year. CRC is most commonly associated with dietary preferences high in red meat, suggesting that the risk of CRC can be reduced by controlling dietary intake (Hooda 2014). In 2011 a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies of colon cancer reported heme intake of 566,607 individuals and 4734 cases of colon cancer. The study compared the RR of subjects with highest category of heme intake with those in lowest category. In their analysis of experimental studies in rats with hemically induced colon cancer, they showed that dietary hemoglobin and red meat promote a putative cancer lesion, an aberrant cryptic foci (Hooda 2014). Low pH of stomach releases heme-containing proteins hemoglobin and myoglobin from dietary meat (Hooda 2014). Several potential mechanisms have been suggested to explain the association between high intake of red meat and the risk of colorectal cancer. It has been shown that under anaerobic conditions, hemoproteins, hemoglobin and myoglobin in meat can react with nitric oxide to form nitrosating agents (Hooda 2014). Soon after transglutaminase was discovered, it was noted that some proteins might serve as amine acceptors, whereas others incorporated insignificant quantities of amine. It was later found that native hemoglobin was not a transglutaminase substrate, but that heat denaturation of hemoglobin made it a good substrate, at least at certain glutamine positions (Toone 2011).

As a Registered Dietitian working in the oncology setting, our primary focus during an initial meeting is to provide each patient with clear instructions on how to optimize current nutritional status. When talking about colorectal cancer, both the cancer and cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery will impact a person's ability to maintain good nutrition. This is where a Registered Dietitian plays a key role by meeting with patients providing nutrition education to help with symptom management. We would likely discuss modifying fiber intake, meeting protein needs, maintaining hydration, and establish an eating plan that takes into account the patients' unique nutritional needs. Dietitians coordinate care with our doctors, nurses, and other various team members to ensure our patient has the support necessary for maintaining good nutritional status. For the patient that has a more normalized eating ability, the education we provide is focused on making good "lifetime" diet choices for cancer survivorship and to reduce the risk of reoccurrence. Working as a dietitian in this setting is very rewarding as we are able to see on a regular basis how valuable our role is in helping our patient, via good nutrition, during cancer treatment.

Colon and rectal cancers begin in the digestive system, or GI system, short for gastrointestinal system. This is where food is processed to create energy and rid the body of solid waste matter. In order to understand colorectal cancer, it helps to know something about the structure of the digestive system and how it works. After food is chewed and swallowed, it travels to the stomach. There it is partly broken down and sent to the small intestine. The word "small" refers to the width of the small intestine. In fact, the small intestine is the longest part of the digestive system — about 20 feet long. The small intestine also breaks down the food and absorbs most of the nutrients and then leads to the large intestine (also called the large bowel or colon), a muscular tube about five feet long. The colon absorbs water and nutrients from the food and also serves as a storage place for waste matter. The waste matter (stool) moves from the colon into the rectum, the last six inches of the digestive system.
