Just Aircraft, Just 103 Solo legal part 103 ultralight aircraft, Troy Woodland www.justaircraft.com We don’t know too much about Just 103 yet but it won’t take long before we get plenty more. Designer Troy Woodland — of SuperSTOL fame — said he almost got the new bird in the air before Oshkosh and will certainly do so in the next few weeks. It should be market ready by end of year. From some folks I’d find that a rather bold promise but Troy has a proven track record of getting flying machines to market. Up front, Troy mounted the Polini Thor 250 engine, which provides 37 horsepower at 7500 rpm. With an engine weight of barely over 40 pounds and the proper Part 103 airframe weight, this Thor engine should provide spirited performance. Fuel usage is very low; remember, these engines got popular on powered paragliders where the pilot carries engine and fuel on his or her back, so big gas tanks aren’t needed. Troy went with a boom tube to the tailplane to keep weight down and to maintain a genuine ultralight look. Readers who have followed this sector may recognize both the Capella Javelin and TEAM’s AirBike. (Also see this Zlin airplane.) The latter comparison is especially apt because this is one of those airplanes you get on rather than in. Pilots side astride the welded steel forward fuselage with their feet on the rudder pedals out in the breeze, although at a top allowed speed of 63 mph (55 knots), that breeze won’t be particularly windy. Troy indicated they have done all the analysis and much of the testing (wings are done even though they weren’t brought to Oshkosh). He is sure it will make the empty weight challenge of 254 pounds. Before it even flies, no price has been set, but with an engine price well under $4,000 and a simple airframe from a very established builder, it is reasonable to think Just 103 will be quite affordable. Coming in at # 10 on our list of ultralight aircraft that give you the biggest bang for your buck is the Legal Eagle. The Legal Eagle which was designed by Leonard Milholland is single seat, high wing, ultralight aircraft first introduced to the U.S. market at Sun N Fun in 1998. The name Legal Eagle came about when Leonard weighted the plane and it came in at 10 lbs less than the 254 lbs weight limit for the U.S. - thus "this Eagle is legal became the "LEGAL EAGLE." The plane features a welded fuselage with an all wood wing, similar to that of a Mini Max, the tail section is aluminums tube using pop rivets and gussets. Controls are standard stick and rudder, with ailerons. The plane is powered by a "better half" VW engine. The plane cruises along at 53 mph, stalls at 19, and according to Leonard is "real responsive and a pleasure to fly." All of the control systems are located outside the fuselage and the wings are completely sealed to prevent "those creepy crawly things" from getting in. "The whole idea of this plane is to be economical - you can afford it if you want to do the work." The plans consist of a cover sheet with the specifications on it, 42 sheets of drawings, and a materials list. Leonard estimates building time to be about 6 months. The engine is unique in that it is not a "half VW" but rather uses a full case. Plans for both the Legal Eagle and the engine are also available. The design features a fuselage of welded 4130 steel tubing, mated to an all-wood wing made from spruce. The struts and tail surfaces are made from 6061 T6 aluminium tubing. The flying surfaces are covered with standard aircraft fabric covering materials. The rear fuselage is normally left as an open truss structure to save weight and to ensure that the aircraft does not exceed the FAR 103 maximum speed of 55 knots (102 km/h; 63 mph). Like the fuselage, the taildragger landing gear is sprung steel. The aircraft has been developed into several variants of the basic design including the XL version for larger pilots and a two seat ultralight trainer and Light-sport aircraft. One of the best contenders is the Affordaplane - or 'A-Plane' as this sophisticated, yet ultra-simple ultralight is popularly called. The Affordaplane was introduced in 2001 as a back-to-basics, all aluminum, true three axis airplane that anyone could build, especially those on a tight budget. The design goals for this unique airplane were nostalgic looks (having incorporated the best elements of classic taildraggers such as the Cubs and Champs), ease of assembly, and performance that rivals more expensive ultralights. Safety was also paramount, and resulted in an airframe that surrounds the pilot through 360 degrees. A thirteen year perfect safety record backs up the claim that this is one safe, tough bird. The A-Plane's fuselage structure is based on immensely strong two-inch square tubes, similar to many gyroplanes. A technique known as 'match-hole' drilling is used to join the parts. Cut, drill, and bolt, to get a perfect fit. Many builders complete their airframe in a single weekend, an unheard of achievement in airplane construction! At 5' high, the A-Plane is 17'3" long with a 27.5' wing span. The wing features full span ailerons, for perfect control even during strong crosswinds, that would ground other ultralights. Weight is a legal 254 pounds with a gross weight of 540 pounds. This airplane can easily accommodate 6' plus pilots that weigh up to 240 pounds. Controls are standard three-axis stick and rudder with full span ailerons. The flight envelope was designed to be ultralight legal in accordance with FAR Part 103. Cruise is around 60 mph with a vne of 75 mph. Stall meets the 27 mph or lower minimum. Takeoffs are between 45 to 50 mph and and landing speeds come in around 28 to 30 mph. Climb rates average 1000 feet per minute. Engines recommended in the plans are in the 35 to 45 hp range. One increasingly popular choice is the 1/2 Volkswagen engine. Other motors such as the Kawasaki 440 are also a good choice. Plans for the Affordaplane are very complete, and have been recently revised and updated. BirdGlider was designed to be a tool for the men of the street to get airborne. It is a low budget airplane. It starts its life as a glider. Later you can upgrade it to a motorised ultralight. The BirdGlider can also be used by disabled pilots. It has full hand control. The plans are for free now. Download the files after reading the rules. Do not send money!! The crowd funding has been ended a looong time ago. It gathered 100 dollar. Which i spend on buying parts for the prototype build up in Colombia.

Scratch Built Aircraft -- HKS Avenger

This started as a "Fisher Avenger V" and was built from a set of plans from Fisher Flying Products. I've made many modifications from what the plans outline; what you see here incorporates those changes. The engine is a HKS 700E, a 60 HP air and oil cooled four stroke. I believe this is the first HKS installed in a Fisher aircraft. It's been an excellent match to this airframe. Building an airplane just takes common sense, patience and perseverance. The H-3 is also a tube and fabric-covered sportplane with construction methods comparable to the H-2 biplane. However, instead of strut- and cable-bracing, the H-3 features a cantilevered wing with a design G-load of +5 to -3. It first flew with an engine of 28 horsepower, but normally is built with engines in the 40 to 50 horsepower range now. The clean configuration gives it a very impressive cruise speed compared to other very light aircraft. The design won first place awards in its category at the EAA Sun 'n Fun Fly-in at Lakeland, Florida in both 1989 and 1990. The designer developed a warbird variant of the H-3 in 1993, based on the P-40 Warhawk of "Flying Tiger" fame. It was designated HP-40, but is not offered now as a separate set of plans. However, H-3 builders who wish to opt for this variant can receive supplemental drawings to enable them to make the minor changes. One of those, the substitution of tube and fabric wing tips in place of fiberglass tips on the H-3, is an option that many builders choose for the standard H-3. http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com -- Flitplane, Ed Fisher's Flitplane available from Wings of Freedom Aviation. The Flitplane is a single seat part 103 legal ultralight aircraft offered in plans, or kit form from wings of freedom aviation. Building the Flitplane from plans will take approximately 500 hours. This time can be reduced to 100 hours if the Flitplane is purchased in kit form. Like all of Ed Fisher's designs the Flitplane is a low-cost aircraft design that can be built as a legal ultralight aircraft in the United States. For those pilots wishing for more weight and performance the craft can also be built as an amateur built aircraft. The Flitplane design was purchased by Mark Klotz of wings of freedom aviation in 1996. The Flitplane has a welded 4130 steel tubing fuselage. The wings are constructed using aluminum tube and ladder construction. The craft is strut braced and power is supplied by engines from 28 to 40 hp in a tractor configuration. Suspension on the Flitplane is supplied via fiberglass axles. The craft uses standard three axis control with a center mounted stick and left hand throttle in a tale dragger configurations. Nobody has designed a new triplane since the end of WW1 so why not a modern light plane version using the latest technology and engines from the ultralight industry. We are not talking a pseudo copy of an old WW1 plane but a new light sport triplane using as much modern technology and materials as is practical and cost effective. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a triplane? Disadvantages; High drag from wing interference and lift loss from six wing tips. The extra work required to build six wings. Loss of visibility due to the location of the center and lower wings blocking the line of sight to the front and down. Advantages; The high aspect ratio of the wings allows an excellent rate of climb and a good glide ratio if the wing interference drag can be reduced. High roll rate from the short span wings. Good longitudinal stability due to the extra lift centers. Unusual and eye catching aircraft that will attract attention no matter where it is flown. How do we maximize the advantages and minimize the disadvantages? By utilizing a modern airfoil, narrow wing chord, lots of wing stagger and properly shaped wingtips we can reduce the interference drag and the tip loss. Create "quick build" wings using common wood working tools that most builders have on hand. The wings would be built much the same way as a model airplane. By using a light 2 stroke engine the wings can be mounted further back than they would have to be for a conventional aircraft engine thereby keeping them out of the field of view, also the narrow chord wings do not block the vision the way the wide chord wings do in a biplane Supply full size patterns for all the fittings, controls, ribs, panels and bulkheads to make layout work faster and easier for the builder. http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. In this issue we speak to Dan Horton about his plans built Early Bird Jenny, design by Dennis Wiley. Dan spent nearly 5 years building the Canadian version of the Early Bird Jenny. This allowed him to move the center of gravity of the aircraft rearward so that his 6 foot frame could fit more comfortably in the plane. The Early Bird Jenny uses a welded 4130 chromoly steel fuselage, with the wing constructed from aluminum tubing. The Jenny is covered in standard aircraft covering materials. Building times are reported to be between 1000 and 1500 hrs. when building from plans. Power for the Early Bird Jenny is supplied by a three cylinder Suzuki engine taken from a Chevy Sprint. Dan has modified the ignition system so that he has dual ignition, he also has three carburetors feeding the three cylinders on the engine, so that the engine produces just over 65 hp Dan also designed a belt reduction drive for his plane, as well as a steerable tail skid. The aircraft uses a standard stick and rudder control system, with a center mounted stick and left hand throttle. Dan's Early Bird Jenny takes off in about 150 feet, climbs out at gross at 500 ft./m, and when flown solo at over 800 ft./m. Coming in at #4 on our list of ultralight aircraft that give you the biggest bang for your buck is the Aventura from Aero Adventure in Tavares Florida. The Aventura was first introduced at Sun N Fun in 1995. It is a single seat amphibious strut braced, high wing tail-dragger ultralight aircraft, in a pusher configuration. The Aventura uses bolt together anodized aluminum tube and rivet together construction covered in pre-sewn dacron sailcloth, the aluminum fuselage is mated to center mounted a fiberglass hull. The Aventura Amphibian has a retractable main landing gear and tail wheel which allow it to land and take off from land or water. On it's center mounted hull and two wing tip floats. Controls on the Aventura Amphibian are standard three axis stick and rudder control with a center hand stick and left hand throttle. Retract for the wheels done via a retract handle on the right hand side of the craft. The Aventura Amphibious is powered by the Rotax 447, or in the experimental category with the Rotax 503, or 582 through a 2.58 to 1 gear reduction drive. Cruise with the Rotax 447 is 55/65 mph, VNE 85 mph, 27 stall mph, climb rate 800/1000 feet per minute. As a FAR Part 103 legal ultralight aircraft the Aventura comes standard with a 5 gallon fuel tank, lexan windshield, two blade prop and instruments. Truly affordable aircraft can be found in Part 103 ultralights but fine as some of these are, their appeal is also limited, for example, most are open cockpit designs. A void in the availability of a dependable 40-60 horsepower four-stroke aircraft engine may be one reason we see few PSA. Some development of new four-stroke engines is occurring but the ones I've examined are heavier and provide less power than popular two-stroke engines. How about electric power? — What works with electric propulsion today are low drag, lightweight aircraft that do not require much power to fly. A PSA is nearly perfect in definition. Heavier two-seat aircraft cannot offer the endurance, instilling "range anxiety," and are still too expensive. Until battery energy capacity increases significantly electric power may be limited to PSA. My personal experience with electric power shows it can be ideal if: - the aircraft can carry enough battery to fly for an hour (hard to do while meeting Part 103) - the motor can provide enough power at low RPM (to reduce prop noise closer to electric motor noise) The entire system can be designed and integrated for safe operation I have been researching electric power, a technology with huge potential, and I believe a PSA is the perfect place to start. A new electric motor I am developing is designed specifically for aircraft use meaning it has high torque, low RPM, light weight and high reliability. Concurrently a new battery system I am creating has one of the highest Lithium Polymer (LiPo) power densities commercially available and is integrated with the motor, controller, and battery management system to provide safe, reliable operation. Electric power can work well using a PSA with today's technology. If properly designed, it should provide an endurance of more than one hour. Those who want to fly farther and faster could couple the electric motor with a small four-stroke aircraft engine for a viable hybrid. FAA is pondering a regulatory approach to electric propulsion but Experimental Amateur Built rules allow customers to build whatever they want. With a simple design and modern construction methods of matched-hole and jig-less assembly build time can be measured in weeks not years. Britain's CAA published a revised SSDR (Single-Seat Deregulated) rule that allows the sale of a finished single seat aircraft up to 315 kilograms (693 pounds) gross weight when equipped with an airframe parachute and a reasonable maximum stall speed of 35 knots (40 mph). This is a perfect PSA rule which I hope will spread to other countries. The future may reward development of viable electric and four-stroke power systems and single seat airframes with modern construction and ramp appeal. Let's call them Personal Sport Aircraft. This is Scott Ehni's custom Zenith CH701 airplane (that he scratch-built from plans) powered by the lightweight Garrett JFS 100-13A Turboshaft engine, putting out at least 90 BHP at a prop speed of 3,100 rpm, burning about 12 gph. The small APU will work on almost any liquid that will burn. The best off-airport fuel choice is a mix of diesel and unleaded regular gas as it burns a bit cleaner. Coming in at #1 on our list of ultralight aircraft that give you the biggest bang for your buck is the Kolb FireFly! The FireFly was designed to be a legal ultralight under FAR Part 103, and in our opinion is one of the safest, most fun flying ultralight aircraft on the market. Despite the limits put on by FAR 103 the FireFly is a "real" aircraft with standard three axis cable and push-pull tube controls in a pusher configuration, with some amazing performance figures. The FireFly when powered by a Rotax 447 still meets the weight limit of Part 103, but climbs out at nearly 1,000 feet per minute, can cruise all day long at 55 mph, can take off in less than 150 feet on a calm day and can land in about twice that distance. The FireFly has a very gentle stall, in fact with the engine at an idle and the stick all the way back the plane just goes into a nose high mush. It has no tendency to drop a wing, and when you force it into a stall at between 25 and 30 mph it simply drops it's nose, release pressure on the stick or add power and it immediately starts to fly again. Visibility in the FireFly is exceptional, the pilot is located in front of the wing giving him/her a 360 degree view. The Kolb FireFly is one of the few true ultralight aircraft that can be fitted with floats and or amphib floats and still make the legal weight limit. Kolb offers a number of kits to the builder to cut down on building time. The average builder will take between 150 and 300 hours to complete the various kits. No special tools are required, although an air compressor, and air rivet gun are recommended. The project can be completed in the area of a one car garage. Brian and his wife Carol have teamed together with a number of companies including Quicksilver Aircraft to bring the EMG 6 electric ultralight motor glider to market. According to Brian the aircraft can be built from plans or built from a number of different kits. The EMG-6 electric motor glider is an FAR part 103 legal ultralight, Adventure Aircraft has developed the EMG-6 with folding wings. The design incorporates match drilled skins and CNC manufactured components. Currently the EMG 6 is using model airplane technology for battery and propulsion. The model aircraft technology was chosen because of its world wide marketing scope which has brought forward innovative ideas in both electric motor and batteries. Brian had on display both a single a two seat version of the EMG 6, with the single seat to be used as a legal part 103 ultralight. As an ultralight the EMG 6 requires no license, medical or registration. The two seat EMG will be licensed as an experimental aircraft and is envisioned it will be used for training. There is the certified airplane; in which an aircraft goes through different phases, testing and certification process. And there is the experimental airplane; which you buy a kit and build the airplane yourself. I personally have always been fascinated with the idea of building my own flying machine. With an experimental airplane, you have a hand in literally everything that goes into the airplane. You get to pick your own engine, avionics and interior design. That’s freedom on a different level. That said, safety remains the number one factor when it comes to flying and aviation in general. So if you ever decide to go this route, always think of safety first! In this video I picked out five of the top single engine airplanes that are in the experimental category. Keep in mind that the ranking of these airplanes are based on several factors. Namely: cost, performance, design, comfort and utility. The airplanes listed in this video are: Lancer evolution - From Lancair. This is one of the fastest kit build airplanes out there. It is also one of the most expensive to build or own. The kit alone starts at over $600,000. A finished airplane will run you anywhere from $1.2 million to $1.5 million. The cost is mostly due to the turbine jet engine that powers this aircraft. We’re talking a lot of horses here. You have three different engine choices of 867HP, 750HP and 550HP. For those who build this airplane, it’s really about speed and how fast they can get to their destination. This airplane will cruise at well over 300 knots, close to 400 miles per hour and it will climb at 4000 feet a minute. Those are performance numbers you typically find in jets. Glacier III - From Glasair. The Glasair III retractable gear is also one of the fastest single engine airplanes out there. And the Glasair is not only fast, it is also nimble and very sporty. Frankly it takes a lot more pilot skills to fly this bird. This airplane will climb at close to 3000 feet a minute on a normal calm day and it will cruise at close to 300 miles per hour while only burning 13 to 15 gallons of fuel per hour. Talk about fuel efficiency. The Glasair also has a nice roomy cabin for 2. Spacious with more than enough head room for taller people. A complete Glasair III can be bought anywhere from $145,000 - $250,000. Cubcrafter Xcub - This airplane is built for the absolute nomad or the adventurous pilot. One of the better bush airplanes out there with amazing capabilities and useful load. The Xcub will take off and land in the shortest distance, basically this is an airplane you can fly right out of your backyard; joking. The Xcub model is factory built but you can buy a kit with similar or better performance and build your own airplane. Best thing about the Xcub is the simplicity of flying it. Needless to say that cubcrafters took their time making the interior space very welcoming. A brand new Xcub sells for $317,000 but you can find older models used for much less. Sling 4 - From The Airplane factory. The sling is one of my personal favorite experimental airplanes. Not only because it is affordable and light, but because it is very cost efficient. Unlike other 4 seater airplanes in the market, the sling 4 only runs on a small 115 hp turbo charged engine. That power output although small, guarantees you very low fuel burn during your flight. The sling 4 only burns about 6 gallons of fuel per hour while traveling 140 miles per hour. This airplane has 4 seats and yes you can put a person on all four seats and still have a good amount of travel range. Vans RV-10 - In the experimental world, Vans is arguably the king. It has the most airplanes actively flying in the air and also being built. Last I checked, there are well over 10,000 registered vans RV aircrafts. The RV-10 is an amazing 4 seater airplane with great performance. Performance comparable to the Cirrus SR22, a plane that cost nearly four times the price of an RV-10. Unlike the Cirrus though, one of the best feature of the RV-10 is it’s landing capabilities. It has a shorter take off and landing distance, and you can land in unpaved runways. This airplane will cruise at 200 miles per hour, climb rate is 2000 feet a minute and have a useful load of over 1000 pounds. http://www.ultralightnews.com -- While at Airventure in I came across an ultralight on display in the Ultralight area across from the Red Barn. The plane was called the Grand Spree and was designed and build by Max Bennett. It took Max over a year to build the Grand Spree, in his living room. Max has built several aircraft in the past including a Lazair and Zenair CH 701. Both of these aircraft use metal in their construction, so since Max was familiar with this type of construction he decided to build The Grand Spree in metal. During the design process Max was more concerned with the look of the aircraft than its performance. Thus he designed the Grand Spree to be as showstopper! While Max knew how to work with metal he did not have the necessary skills to design and test I wing. To overcome this problem he decided to purchase a set of plans for the wing assembly of a Hummel UltraCruiser. The UltraCruiser uses and all metal low wing in a tractor configuration and the speed and weight of an UltraCruiser are very close to that of the Grand Spree. To get the look that he wanted required the molding of approximately 50 fiberglass parts. He also had to design and fabricate a motor mount for the 30 hp twin cylinder Kawasaki two-stroke engine and belt reduction system. When equipped with the Hirth F 33 or Compact Radial Engines MZ34 engine the Zipster is a legal part 103 ultralight in the U.S., weighing in at 249 lbs complete with wheel pants. If you are looking for higher performance in the experimental category, the Zipster is capable of handling the Rotax 503 or equivalent Hirth, Compact Radial Engines, 1/2 VW, 1/3 Corvair and "Big Twin" engines. The Zipster was originally designed by Ed Fisher of Raceair Designs over 22 years ago and in 2004 and received "Ultralight Grand Champion" honours at the 2004 Oshkosh Air show! The fuselage and tail section are 4130 chromoly steel tubing. The wings are standard tube and ladder construction with a 2 1/4 inch front spar and 1 3/4 rear spar 6061T6 Aluminum Tubes. When up and flying as an ultralight using the Hirth F 33 engine, the builder can expect their craft to be airborne in about 200 feet, climb out at around 400 feet per minute and cruise along all day at 55 to 60 mph at 5800 rpm burning approximately 2 gallons of fuel per hour. Stall speed comes in at around 26 mph, with plenty of warning prior to it getting to stall. The cockpit easily accommodates pilots 6' 2" tall and 220lbs. RaceAir Designs offers a detailed set of construction drawings and construction manual for building of the plane from raw materials. The wing ribs template is full size, and the plans are scaled at 1 inch/12 inches. Plans on CD are just $25 including shipping. The Fisher FP-202 Koala was designed by Mike Fisher and Wayne Ison in 1981-3 time frame. It was an early Ultralight that actually looked like an airplane - unique in the days of flying spiders made of tubing and sail cloth. All wood construction made it an easy to build and inexpensive kit. Although designed for (US) part 103 Ultralight rules, very few current aircraft make weight as it is common for twin cylinder engines to be used. The Koala is the most popular design of the 14 models Fisher Flying Products offers. With quoted 3000 + aircraft building or flying. It is modeled after the J-3 Cub and offers nostalgic good looks. The Koala has 120 square ft. of wing area, a 254-300 lbs empty, a 500 lbs. + gross, designed for enignes under 60 horsepower. It has a very narrow fuselage and many builders will add a few inches to allow a more comfortable fit. With the Fisher FP-202 Koala, the standard for personal aircraft has been redefined, but not redesigned. A strikingly faithful reproduction of one of the most popular aircraft ever built, the Koala can make the dream of owning a classic flying machine a reality. Proven geodetic wood construction gives the FP 202 its strength; proven Fisher ingenuity gives the plane its appeal. A totally enclosed cockpit provides plenty of room for the pilot, while economy of instrumentation and controls allow plenty of room for fun flying. More classic-style aircraft hardware abounds: An aluminum strut braced main spar carrythrough, a ground adjustable horizontal stabilizer, 14-inch pneumatic tires with rubber shock cord, and removable cockpit panels for summer flight. The FP-202 Koala is a single seat plane designed by Wayne Ison in 1981 and produced since by Fisher Flying Products. The Fisher FP202 "Koala" has been in production as a kit since about 1983. The craft uses all wood geodetic construction covered in standard aircraft covering materials. Standard features include an enclosed cockpit with removable side panels, large pneumatic tires, a steerable tail wheel, 5 gallon fuel tank, fiberglass cowl and full scale plans. Using the standard kit it takes about 500 hours to build a plane; using the Quick-Build kit it takes about 200 hours to build the plane. Options include various engines, quick built kit options, brakes, electric start, and wheel pants. After Oshkosh I really missed actually flying in a plane , Since things didint work out with Flitetest (regarding my real airplane I bought) I never really got the chance to fly anything. I did get my private pilot's license a while back but never used it much. Since the 172 is cost prohibitive and not really the type of flying I want to do I might as well build the airplane to perform as such! This will be a part 103 legal ultralight aircraft! primarily electric it should be super quiet and a joy to fly! http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com – The Goldwing is an ultralight aircraft of the canard configuration. Conventional 3-axis controls are incorporated into the foam-fiberglass composite structured airframe. Handling is described as straightforward and docile with very forgiving characteristics. It is was sold as a kit. The nose-mounted canard not only provides lift, but also pitch stability and control. Winglets provide directional stability while increasing the effective aspect ratio, without a sacrifice in handling. Split rudders produce yaw while maintaining the winglet advantage. Spoilers and ailerons are used together for roll control at all speeds. The fully independent 3-axis control system enables the Goldwing to handle crosswind takeoffs and landings. Power is provided by a two cylinder, electric start, 25 hp snowmobile engine. Full throttle at sea level gives a climb of 600 fpm at 47 mph, while power is pulled back to 75% throttle for a comfortable 500 fpm. At the economy cruise setting of 50% throttle, the airspeed holds at 50 mph while the fuel consumption drops to one gallon per hour. At higher power settings, the aircraft has been clocked at 85 mph in level flight. High altitude performance at 9,000 feet density altitude resulted in a takeoff roll of 400 feet and a climb rate of 400 fpm. During stall and spin testing, the Goldwing was capable of being flown with full aft stick at an indicated 27 mph, while maintaining full control at all power settings. The canard would not stall unless forced into an accelerated stall. Take one or more parts from an already proven design, add a few parts for creature comfort and/or customer preferences, mix together with a solid team and you have a sure-fire winner!
