A senior living facility called, "The Sanctuary," prepares to open in April in Brooklyn Center. The building on Brooklyn Boulevard sits where a car lot used to be and city leaders have long talked about the 130-plus assisted living apartment building enhancing Brooklyn Center in more ways than one. “It’s part of the re-creation of my hometown of Brooklyn Center,” says council member Dan Ryan. “I’m so proud to see this facility and the wonderful work that’s been done.” Community members attended a VIP event on March 8 to celebrate the opening of The Sanctuary. The tax-credit building is for seniors with Medicaid or low income, but it feels like any upscale senior high rise. The public-private partnership helps keep costs low. “There’s not a reason why even though you are on a lower, limited income you should not have the choices and options and The Sanctuary is built with that in mind,” says Lisa Toms, administrator. “If a person is on Medicaid or an elderly waiver, they choose their apartment—either a studio or one bedroom. They are not forced to have a roommate, which is the norm in Minnesota.” Aside from private rooms and studios, there are alcoves with gaming rooms, art rooms and a gym. Administrators say they want people to come out of their rooms and be social. Chef Don Ram, who was previously at Earle Brown Terrace, showed off the new kitchen space with pride. “We put on a really good show and we set the bar really high with what we do here,” says Chef Ram. “It’s almost like a resort.” The Sanctuary also has memory care facilities. Residents are expected to start moving in during the month of April. The facility is not yet full and applicants must produce proof of income during the application process. The Sanctuary also has locations in St. Cloud and West St. Paul. New Islamic Center set to open in Plymouth

Situated on the corner of Plymouth Blvd and 34th Avenue North sits a United States Post Office -- dedicated when Jimmy Carter was president. It's in a central location next to city hall with plenty of lunch hour foot traffic. But, soon, the U.S. Postal service will no longer be the primary tenant. Today the post office is the focal point of this building, but starting Saturday, it will become the center of the area's Islamic community. "There's a number of Muslims in the area," said Adeel Ahmed, a board member for the Northwest Islamic Community Center. "And there is no place, no mosque anywhere nearby." Ahmed is part of a group that bought the building using private donations. The post office just had one request. "They said, well one of our conditions is, 'we want to be able to rent the retail space there,' and we were like 'oh, that's great,'" Ahmed said. Now, the post office and Islamic center will coexist under one roof. Ahmed is one of the people who have spent this whole year converting the space to a center of islamic prayer, education and fun. "It's gonna be used on a daily basis throughout the day, not just once a day," he said. The grand opening is set for Saturday, however, the center isn't quite ready for occupancy just yet. But, things are slowly taking shape. "We're gonna have some woodwork put in here, Arabic calligraphy, verses from the Quran," Ahmed explained while pointing at an empty wall. Something they have accomplished inside the building is that they've color-coordinated the carpet, walls and doors. "That's everything I picked up from HGTV," he joked. Once the interior is all said and done, dozens of people will utilize the space daily -- with even more coming on holy days. "We're a very spiritual people," Ahmed said of Muslims. "We worship God, we abhor violence, and we try to do good for the community, for ourselves, and everyone around us." And with its location in the heart of the city, Ahmed says they couldn't have picked better location. "I really encourage [people] to stop by and visit us," he said. The grand opening celebration takes place on Saturday, July 7, beginning at 9 a.m. with a 5K run-walk, followed by other activities throughout the day. How we Made our New Bigger Better Chicken Coop!

We finished our new in-barn chicken coop which will house our future flock. It came out so good and we are really happy with it. It features two sliding pop doors and a really clever angled door design that saves space and leaves more room for the dual communal nesting boxes on the front. We were able to upcycle wood from pallets and shipping crates, and even made use of the pickets from our old fence. Building Amazing Homes & Mobile Spaces Using Shipping Containers!

In this video we explore and learn how to use shipping containers as strong, durable and mobile building blocks to create amazing structures of all kinds, like a house, addition, office space, or cabin; and we feature a few stunning projects to get you inspired! Anthony Ruggiero from Storstac Inc. (http://www.storstac.com/) showed us around their yard in Toronto, Ontario and took the time to teach us about the ins and outs of building with shipping containers. We're excited to share the tips and information we learned with you. Shipping containers come in standard 20 foot and 40 foot lengths, and there are other specialty custom sizes like the 10', 45', 48', 53' long containers. Almost all shipping containers are made in China, and can be bought used (after they've been used for 10-20 years), or new, which means they've one been used once. Since there are no shipping manifests for used containers to show what was transported in them over the course of their lifetime (it could be anything from clothes to nuclear waste), it's better to build with a new shipping container that's only been used once. They're made with COR-TEN steel, which is a weathering steel that can withstand harsh weather conditions and elements like salt water because the rust on weathering steel creates a protective patina to keep it strong, whereas rust on mild steel would actually weaken the metal. While building with shipping containers is not necessarily cheaper than conventional building, it does have advantages because the containers are modular, movable and mobile, durable, and have a unique, modern look. They can be do it yourself friendly if you've worked with steel before, or if you find a company to take care of the steel work for you so you can focus on how to frame it and finish it from the inside.
