The Republican health care bill makes no sense

04:50
The bill doesn’t know what problem it’s trying to solve. For more Vox analysis: http://www.vox.com/2017/1/5/14179258/obamacare-repeal-republican-votes-trump You can read the bill here: http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/06/politics/house-republicans-obamacare-repeal-replace-text/ https://waysandmeans.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/03.06.17-AmericanHealthCareAct_Summary.pdf Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Republicans in the House have finally released a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare: the American Health Care Act. The GOP healthcare bill keeps some of the most popular parts of Obamacare, like letting young adults stay on their parents' health insurance until age 26 and requiring insurance companies to cover people with pre-existing conditions. But the Republican bill gets rid of the key element that made Obamacare work: the individual mandate. Now that people aren't required to have insurance, healthy people could leave insurance pools en masse, leaving sick people who are more expensive to cover. Hypocrisy is a minor sin in politics, but still, it is remarkable how much of it there is to be found in this legislation. A core Republican complaint when Obamacare was passed was that the law delayed many of its provisions in order to reduce public outcry and manipulate the CBO’s score. The GOP bill is similarly aggressive with such tricks, delaying changes to the Medicaid expansion until 2020 and pushing Obamacare’s tax on expensive insurance plans out until 2025. Because Republicans aren’t even trying to win Democratic votes, they’re stuck designing a bill that can wiggle through the budget reconciliation process (another thing they complained about Democrats doing). That means they can’t make major changes to insurance markets like repealing Obamacare’s essential benefit standards or allowing insurance to be sold across state lines. That last part is particularly striking, given that it was one of President Trump’s five demands in his speech last week. I’ve always been skeptical about the savings Republicans could wrest by changing those regulations, but now they can’t get those savings at all — which means sacrificing a key part of their theory of cost control. This bill has a lot of problems, and more will come clear as experts study its language, the Congressional Budget Office release its estimates, and industry players make themselves heard. But the biggest problem this bill has is that it’s not clear why it exists. What does it make better? What is it even trying to achieve? Democrats wanted to cover more people and reduce long-term costs, and they had an argument for how their bill did both. As far as I can tell, Republicans have neither. At best, you can say this bill makes every obvious health care metric a bit worse, but at least it cuts taxes on rich people? Is that really a winning argument in American politics? In reality, what I think we’re seeing here is Republicans trying desperately to come up with something that would allow them to repeal and replace Obamacare. This is a compromise of a compromise of a compromise aimed at fulfilling that promise. But “repeal and replace” is a political slogan, not a policy goal. This is a lot of political pain to endure for a bill that won’t improve many peoples’ lives, but will badly hurt millions. Republican Plans for The Affordable Care Act

06:26
After campaigning for years on a plan of "repeal and replace Obamacare," Republicans finally have the means within their grasp to make much of that possible. They control the presidency, the House, and the Senate. The filibuster still poses some potential threats to their plans, but it's also within their means to abolish its widespread use in such a way that they could both repeal the Affordable Care Act and replace it with something of their own design. What would that be? In contrast to what many say, there are Republican plans out there to consider. They're the topic of this week's Healthcare Triage. This episode was adapted from a post I wrote for the JAMA Forum. What became clear during their attempt to get rid of The ACA, also called “Obamacare”, is that people like it. Voters are even supportive of The ACA in red states where voters despise the name “Obama”, but tend to embrace the protections of his health care plan. In particular, protections for pre-existing conditions are very popular amongst American voters. Two years ago, Democrats were clearly in favor of The ACA and Republicans were against it, but now conservatives are having to bend their platforms to account for popular provisions of ACA. The difference between the 2016 campaign platforms and now is stark. In 2018, the midterm elections is shaping around one big question: whether pre-existing protections will be protected. Despite having worked hard to remove protections for nearly a decade, Republicans are now saying they’ll fight to protect them…but what do they really mean when they say that? 13 men wrote a health care bill that would hurt women

What you need to know about how women fare under the Republican healthcare plan. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Republicans in the Senate are doing their best to repeal and replace Obamacare, as they've promised to do for years. But the bill they put out this week would hurt many of the people they vowed to protect, especially women. The bill slashes Medicaid funding and defunds Planned Parenthood-- both of which would take away prenatal, maternity, and reproductive care from millions of women. These cuts couldn't come at a worse time-- the United States is one of the only developed countries in the world with rising maternal death rate, with more than half of childbirth deaths coming from easily preventable conditions that would become even more widespread if women on Medicaid lose their coverage. Senate Republicans Exempt Themselves From Their Awful Healthcare Plan - The Ring of Fire

03:12
In the latest draft of the Senate healthcare bill, Republican Senators decided to add a provision that would exempt them from having to use the same awful coverage that they want American citizens to have.  It isn’t good enough for Congress, then it isn’t good enough for the American people. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.   Link – https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/7/13/15966034/senate-republicans-exemption Ring of Fire needs your help! While Republicans in the Senate continue to work day and night trying to figure out the best way to take health insurance away from more than 20 million people in this country, they have actually found one group of people who they absolutely refuse to take health insurance away from. Unfortunately, that group of people is themselves and their staff. According to the latest draft of the Republican health care plan, Republicans have slipped in a little provision that completely exempts members of Congress, members of the Senate, and their staffs from having to purchase or buy into or be covered by this horrendous Republican health care plan. That's right, folks. It's good enough for you but it's not good enough for them. Why? Because they understand that it doesn't cover most conditions. They understand that it's probably not, in its current form, going to cover preexisting conditions. They understand that if they want real insurance that actually works for them, they're going to have to get some other kind of coverage because this Republican plan, the plan they themselves came up with, isn't good enough for them. Perfectly fine for everybody else. It's perfectly fine to cut Medicaid by $800 billion and kick 14 million people immediately out of the insurance pool because they can't afford it without that Medicare money or Medicaid money. It's perfectly fine to slash Medicaid and Medicare, which is going to lead to the closing of hospices, which literally will result in the deaths of people. It will cut down on the money available for people to care for in-home care, which will lead to deaths if you do not have the around the clock care. It's going to lead to some hospitals closing down because they rely on Medicaid funding for more than 80% of their income. Republicans understand that. They're not stupid. They are, but they at least understand that. They know how horrible this plan is and that's why they don't want to buy into it. If you're out here in the United States thinking that the Republicans are actually working on a plan that's going to work for you, I suggest you take a look at the fact that even they don't want it. That's like a five-star chef saying, "Here. Eat my food. No thanks. I'm going to run to McDonald's because I don't want to eat that crap." Would you trust a chef like that? No, you wouldn't. Why would you trust a politician who won't even buy into their own policies? Call them. Call them now. Call them today. Call them all weekend. Call them next week. Make sure they know that you do not approve of the fact that they won't even buy into their own plan. Because if they're going to pass this, if they're going to force it on every one of us, then we're going to force it back on them.

Do Republicans Lack a Health Care Plan?

Republicans seem to lack a health care plan after vocally opposing Obamacare without proposing their own system to replace it. The CBO On The Republicans' "Health Care" Plan | Bernie Sanders

04:37
As some of you may know, the Congressional Budget Office, a nonpartisan agency, released its report today on the implications of the Republican "health care" plan which repeals the Affordable Care Act and what they said is stunning. The CBO estimated that 24 million Americans, as a result of this Republican legislation, will lose their health insurance. This legislation is a disgrace. All of us must work together to see that it is defeated. https://www.facebook.com/senatorsanders/videos/10155725604777908/ --------- ★ Join the political revolution at www.berniesanders.com  ★ Connect with Bernie: Facebook → https://www.facebook.com/berniesanders/ , https://www.facebook.com/senatorsanders/ Twitter → https://twitter.com/berniesanders Instagram → https://www.instagram.com/berniesanders/ Tumblr → http://berniesanders.tumblr.com/ Snapchat → bernie.sanders ★ About Bernie: Bernie Sanders is a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren. Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq. In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee. Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment. Republicans To The Poor: iPhones Or Healthcare

05:17
Poor people don’t fund Jason Chaffetz’s campaigns, so they can take a long walk off a short pier. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. http://tytnetwork.com/go "Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) is proposing a quick fix for low-income Americans unable to afford coverage under President Donald Trump’s newly proposed health care law: Don’t buy an iPhone. The American Health Care Act, unveiled by House Republican leaders Monday, offers less financial assistance to low-income people than former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, so it would likely result in millions of Americans losing the health coverage they have today. But the Republican chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee said Tuesday that Americans who might struggle to afford insurance under the GOP plan simply need to make the choice to “invest in health care.” “Americans have choices, and they’ve got to make a choice,” Chaffetz said Tuesday on CNN. “So rather than getting that new iPhone that they just love and want to go spend hundreds of dollars on that, maybe they should invest in their own health care. They’ve got to make those decisions themselves.” Having to choose between a smartphone and health care coverage is a scenario Chaffetz likely can’t relate to. With a net worth of at least $320,000 in 2014, he makes less than many of his colleagues in Congress and was only the 301st wealthiest lawmaker based on financial disclosures that year. But he still lives well above the median income in America (about $56,500 in 2015) and enjoys comprehensive health care benefits afforded to members of Congress. CNN host Alisyn Camerota asked Chaffetz if Americans might have more health care access but less coverage under Trump’s new health care bill.”* Read more here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/jason-chaffetz-iphone-health-care_us_58bea6aae4b09ab537d6a395 Hosts: Cenk Uygur Cast: Cenk Uygur *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. As voters worry about health care, Trump administration relaxes Obamacare rules

08:38
With only weeks before the midterms, the Trump administration announced plans to consider state requests that would further loosen Affordable Care Act restrictions, offer less comprehensive health plans and use Obamacare subsidies to pay for them. William Brangham asks Margot Sanger-Katz of the New York Times about the possible impact on politics, prices and people with preexisting conditions. Republicans Differ on Trump-supported Health Care Plan

01:56
Republicans are under pressure to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act as they have been promising for seven years. On Monday, the House Republicans offered an alternative that has little support even within their own party. Conservative Republicans contend that the new plan still preserves too many parts of the so-called Obamacare, and moderates give it only tepid support. Zlatica Hoke reports two committees began debating the bill Wednesday. Originally published at - http://www.voanews.com/a/3756575.html

Republicans Throw "Beer Bash" After Voting Away Healthcare for Millions

13:47
In a vote of 217-213, House Republicans have officially voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and replace it with a plan that would strip millions of Americans of their health insurance coverage and give tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans. To a normal person, this would be troubling; however, for a misanthropic, fascistic, extremist political party, it's cause for celebration—and they did just that! Republicans reportedly ordered "cases upon cases" of Bud Light to celebrate their victory. Stay classy, a$$holes.
