Health information management

23:11
Health information management is the practice of acquiring, analyzing and protecting digital and traditional medical information vital to providing quality patient care. With the widespread computerization of health records, traditional records are being replaced with Electronic Health Records. The tools of health informatics and health information technology are being increasingly utilized to introduce efficiency in information management practices in the health care sector. Both hospital information systems and health human resources information systems are common implementations of HIM. Health information management professionals plan information systems, develop health policy, and identify current and future information needs. In addition, they may apply the science of informatics to the collection, storage, analysis, use, and transmission of information to meet legal, professional, ethical and administrative records-keeping requirements of health care delivery. They work with clinical, epidemiological, demographic, financial, reference, and coded healthcare data. Health information administrators have been described to "play a critical role in the delivery of healthcare in the United States through their focus on the collection, maintenance and use of quality data to support the information-intensive and information-reliant healthcare system". BMCC Students Get Boost up Career Ladder—and Edge in Fast-Growing Hospital Info Tech Field

00:24
Graduates of the Borough of Manhattan Community Colleges Health Information Technology (HIT) program are eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam—a necessary step if they want to take full career advantage of the medical industrys shift to electronic medical records, or EMRs. There are certificate coding schools out there, says BMCC professor Rawle Chichester, who teaches Intro to Electronic Medical Records, but this is the only program in New York City accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Informational Management Education [CAHIIM], that awards an associate degree—making you eligible to take the RHIT exam. The only one. With unemployment hitting 10.6% in New York City, money spent on education and training must be wisely placed. Students who earn an associate degree in BMCCs HIT program are investing their education dollars to enter a field that is not only growing, but backed by the Obama administration—which set aside $46 billion to help doctors and hospitals go electronic, by 2014. From ethics to coding: hands-on, well rounded training At BMCC, students experience first hand, the type of medical data experience theyll encounter as EMR professionals. We have practice software we get directly from AHIMA--the American Health Information Management Association, says Chichester, which students can access from home or in class. Entering a field thats breaking new ground in information sharing, they also need awareness of ethical issues unique to the HIT and EMR workplace. We teach the legal aspects, says Chichester. Confidentiality issues. We teach management. We teach quality assurance. And of course, medical coding is part of the training—and requires a lot more than being data-savvy. According to HIT Program Director Linda Carlson, anatomy and physiology courses are the cornerstone of understanding coding. In short, students have to know the difference between a disease and its symptoms, and she gives an example: appendicitis. For coding purposes, you would not code abdominal pain. Once coding is in place, billing can happen. Coding is where the money is, says Professor Rawle Chichester. Whatever procedure the doctor performs, its assigned a code by the Internal Classification of Diseases. There is no other way to get reimbursed. Eventually, students apply their EMR skills through practicums in 25 hospitals and medical facilities throughout New York City. A preceptor—a hospital director or supervisor—mentors them and ensures they are exposed to an array of work areas utilizing EMRs. Cancer registry is one department where students spend time, says Chichester. Then they move on to billing and coding. They spend six weeks there, altogether. Starting a new career, or jump starting an existing one According to Chichester, about half of the 24 people in his class already work in the medical field, such as hospital employee J. Carrasco. I came back to school because I want to apply for management positions, she says, and its important to have the HIT degree. Were a hybrid at my hospital—we have both electronic and paper files, but were trying to go electronic completely. Its good for the patient. Cardio cases, you need information right away, and electronically, its much faster. Access is the big difference with EMRs, Chichester says. Before, if a doctor needed information, you had to search and search manually—now with EMRs, you just press a few computer keys. Or lets say the doctor tells you, I need information on all the Cesarean sections Ive done over the last five years. That would take weeks to find, but now, it takes a few seconds. Another example the doctor ordered tests for a patient, but the results cant be found. Now, results are immediately entered into the system—theyre right there on the computer.

56:36
The Translational Cancer Research Network (TCRN) is a Translational Cancer Research Centre based at UNSW and funded by the Cancer Institute NSW. Founded in 2011, the TCRN brings together researchers and clinicians from across its member groups including UNSW Sydney, hospitals within the South East Sydney Local Health District, University Technology Sydney, Border Medical Oncology and the Australian Institute of Health Innovation. The Cancer Institute identified translational research as an area to focus research support to supplement the usual research funding models that focus upon preclinical scientific discovery or clinical trials. The focus of such research is intended to be on mainstream application of novel approaches to care emerging from preclinical or preliminary clinical research or clinical observation leading to novel directions for preclinical research. The goals of the TCRN are to foster a sustainable culture of translational research and develop a sustainable cancer focussed workforce. Examples of the TCRN work in biobanking and bioinformatics and hereditary cancer will be used as examples of potential system change, identification of potential metrics to assess impact in partnership with the AIHI, and our planned future program will be outlined. Professor Goldstein is a conjoint clinical professor at the UNSW Prince of Wales Clinical school. He is the director of the UNSW Cancer Institute NSW Translational Cancer Research Centre – the Translational Cancer Research Network [TCRN] of which the AIHI is a key member. The TCRN belongs to a network of centres established to aggregate translational cancer research in NSW. He has been involved in a variety of clinical research projects ranging from laboratory basic science to novel therapeutics trials to psychosocial aspects of Cancer care. He has been PI of a number of NHMRC and Cancer Australia funded therapeutic trials including both investigator initiated and as Australian PI for multinational studies. He has also been involved with psychosocial and cross cultural/CALD research for many years. His clinical interests are treatment of GI malignancies including pancreas cancer, colorectal cancer, anal carcinoma, hepatobiliary and upper GI malignancy and renal cell carcinoma and lymphoma. He is the adult program leader of the newly formed UNSW Cancer Survivors Centre and is involved with a research program associated with survivorship issues. As part of this activity, he is the Chief Investigator of a Cancer Institute NSW translational program grant of $3,100,000 to study the impact of chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy. He also actively participates in three laboratory research programs dealing with stromal biology, pancreas drug resistance and modelling optimal targeted therapies in sarcoma. Cruise Ships Visit The Cayman Islands Remembering the Poop Cruise

34:24
Cruise Ships Visit The Cayman Islands Remembering the Poop Cruise Plus What it's like working on a cruise ship. Once in a while the winds pick up and it becomes impossible to land visitors to the Cayman Islands. All cruise ships arriving to the Cayman Islands have to use their tenders to get passanger to shore. A few times a year the best way to land these travellers is to head over to a place called Spotts which is on the south side of the island. This past week 10,000 passangers arrived in Spotts on one day alone for their day visit to the Island. I also remember the "POOP CRUISE" of 2013 in this video and I mention the fact that the same ship the Carnival Triumph failed it's CDC exam in New Orleans. Then to wrap up this video I recall a chance meeting I had with 3 employees who were travelling from London Heathrow to Miami to catch their cruise ship for another 11 month work commitment. All 3 were looking forward to rejoining their friends on the ship and they loved their jobs.

General Practice Nursing: A New Dimension in Primary Health Care

01:30:43
Practice nursing presents some great opportunities and viable alternatives for primary health care. Health workforce shortages have for some time caused concern in Australia. A number of studies have emphasised an underlying need to develop a more sustainable and responsive health workforce, while maintaining a commitment to high quality and safe health outcomes. In attempting to address health workforce shortages generally and medical workforce shortages in particular, the Australian Government has introduced a number of initiatives including regulatory restrictions and incentive payments. Some of these have involved programs that encourage development of the practice nurse specialisation. The term 'practice nurse' is generally applied to qualified nurses who are employed by medical general practices. Practice nursing is a relatively new area of nursing specialisation in Australia. Practice nursing in Australia traditionally has been a means through which nurses have been able to accommodate family commitments by engaging in part time employment which has not involved shift work. Consequently, there has been little acknowledgement of the special skills nurses need to work in Australian general practice and almost no formal education to prepare and support nurses in the practice nursing. For some time there was also speculation in that practice nursing could be detrimental to nurses' careers as it was thought that professional competency could possibly be diminished as a result of working in general practice. This program discusses the professional issues in practice nursing. Suitable models of practice, training and education, indemnity, and the wide variation of roles among practice nurses are also discussed. The strengths and opportunities in practice nursing are explored, as well as the barriers to the further development of practice nursing.
