Turn Around - How aware are Canadians about the mental health and poverty issues? 23 May 2016

Neil Hamell and the Extreme Poverty and Mental Health Journey; www.extremejourney22.com According to Erin Anderssen in the Globe And mail, http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/to-help-the-homeless-first-find-them-housing/article24646387/ , posted on May 27, 2015 “……….Mental illness and poverty In many cases, mental illness can’t be simplified down to a medical problem that even a perfect health-care system would solve. It’s also a social issue, tangled up in poverty, unemployment and family circumstance. People who are poor are about four times as likely to have a mental-health problem, and people who are mentally ill are more likely to become poor. Among the 200,000 people in Canada homeless every year, two-thirds have a history of mental illness or substance abuse. The country spends $7.7-billion for health care, social-service use and the justice system in connection with homelessness; the human cost of being trapped on the street in one of the wealthiest nations in the world is without measure. This reality is more evidence for early intervention, for publicly funded comprehensive treatments – to tackle illness before it derails a patient’s life, and to invest in preventing relapse. But it also means that psychotherapy and well-managed drugs are only a partial remedy for many of the sickest patients who also need support finding jobs and affordable housing….By the numbers 200,000: The number of people in Canada who are homeless annually. $7-billion: The annual cost of homelessness in Canada in health care, justice costs and social-service use. 67: The percentage of people who are homeless with a history of mental illness. $600-million: Ottawa’s five-year investment in Housing First projects starting in 2014. 55: The percentage of homeless people who had visited an emergency room or been hospitalized in the past year (2010 Health and Housing in Transition Study). 43: The percentage of long-term psychiatric patients in hospital for 90 days or more, receiving alternative levels of care, who were readmitted within 30 days. $2,500: The additional cost of a hospital stay for a homeless person compared with an average patient (2011 study at St. Michael’s Hospital). 4.8: The average number of years, in their lifetime, that a participant in the Housing First trial had been homeless. 40: The percentage of participants in the trial who reported having their first episode of homelessness before age 25. 73: The percentage of time Housing First participants spent in stable housing over two years. 32: The percentage of time spent in stable housing by a control group. $19,582: The annual cost of the Housing First initiative for the most severely mentally ill clients with the highest needs. $42,536: The annual costs saved in services that otherwise would have been used. 225,000: The annual cost to the system, per person, for homeless people who are the highest users of social, justice and health-care services. $2: The amount saved through Housing First for every $1 spent on these clients.”

WATCH: Oklahoma Cops Cruelly Mocks MENTALLY ILL Man for 'Faking' ILLNESS

02:29
LIKE | COMMENT | SHARE | SUBSCRIBE The Cleveland County jail and Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department in Oklahoma have released the body camera footage showing the death of 34-year-old Marconia Kessee while in custody. According to KFOR, two officers were placed on administrative leave related to the incident. The victim’s uncle, Michael Washington, explained that Kessee went to the hospital on complaints of a headache. Officers attempted to persuade Kessee to go to the Salvation Army after the hospital released him. “We believe that there was no actual mental evaluation, we believe that the doctors, hospitals, did not review or take the physical assessment of my nephew and that they are partly responsible and they will be held accountable,” Washington explained. Kessee was instead taken to the jail and placed in a padded cell after trying to allegedly hurt himself. He was then found unresponsive and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The video shows officers telling Kessee that they need to take him outside and that he must leave the hospital. Kessee had a hard time moving, so officers put him in a wheelchair. The body cam video shows Kessee’s hands shaking as he attempts to put on his glasses. The officers quickly turned hostile, however. They refused to give the man a ride to the Salvation Army, which was across the street. “I don’t give rides. He can walk,” one is heard saying. They tried to get him to put on his shoes and walk across the street. When Kessee tries to stand up he stumbles and falls. “He’s just acting like this to get back in the hospital,” the officer says. We have a mental illness crisis that is going unaddressed, and combined it has created a major issue for not only the individuals who are affected directly by living on the street, who are mentally ill and going untreated, but it’s also affecting the quality of life for the rest of the people in our city,” she said. Malliotakis painted a picture of a city beset by “aggressive panhandling” and “public urination,” which she said had been “fostered by the policies that have come out of this administration.” Malliotakis, who opposes the mayor’s plan to build 90 new shelters, said the city should instead focus on building more supportive housing and could use empty beds in Health + Hospitals facilities, which are underutilized, to treat mentally ill people. She rattled off examples of people who were both homeless and mentally ill causing mayhem — including a May slashing of a mom holding her baby by a homeless woman, and a stabbing outside a Salvation Army. “You had the issue just the other day where someone was defecating outside a building in Chelsea and a 72-year-old-man approached him to ask him what he was doing in front of his building, and he was stabbed,” she said. It didn’t go over well with one attendee of the breakfast — Christine Quinn, the last woman who ran for mayor, former council speaker and current head of women and children shelter network Win, ripped her comments. “I think if you timed it, it probably took her about 30 seconds to get to the words ‘public urination’ and ‘homeless people,” Quinn said, though the News timed it as about two minutes into the speech. “I think that her description of homeless people as criminals, people who publicly urinate and on and on is a clear attempt to create more fear in the public as it relates to homeless people.” Quinn made the comments to the assembled press as a spokesman for Malliotakis ambled behind them and said: “If anyone wants Nicole, we’re going.” Copyright Disclaimer: Citation of articles and authors in this report does not imply ownership. Homelessness and Mental Health

Many factors may have a negative impact on a young person’s emotional wellbeing. These include poor housing, economic disadvantage, serious illness, homophobic bullying, abuse or bereavement. Any of these factors can have a profound impact on a young person’s self-esteem and their ability to learn. Everyday emotional wellbeing involves identifying, building upon and operating from your strengths rather than focusing on fixing problems or weaknesses. The better you are able to master your emotions, the greater your capacity to enjoy life, cope with stress, and focus on important personal priorities. Fred is homeless in St John's, Newfoundland and teaches me to speak Newfinese

06:24
I met Fred in St John's Newfoundland, Canada. Fred is one of those older colorful gents you could talk to all day. Fred shared an apartment with a roommate who took off with the rent. Fred was lucky because he never spent any time on the streets. After he was evicted he found housing with the Salvation Army. If you find it kind of hard to understand Fred that's because he speaks "Newfinese" The people of Newfoundland pride themselves on being the nicest people in Canada, and they have developed their own slang language [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newfoundland_English]. Fred was kind enough to give us a few lessons. I still don't get "Bob's your uncle" but it sure is fun to say. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible. Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath – its founder – and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten. Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Pay It 4Ward: Oklahoma woman pours love and kindness on area homeless

03:56
NORMAN, Okla. - Mental illness, addiction, hopelessness - there are many reasons people stumble into a life on the streets. Tanya Clark's family was fractured years ago when alcohol abuse consumed her father, Al. "My father was homeless for 2-3 years. He was working for the Salvation Army helping alcoholics, and I want to carry on his legacy. He was a good man," Clark said. After her dad passed away, Clark began a special project called 'Al's Heart.' She makes regular trips to downtown Oklahoma City, where she distributes bags full of groceries, toiletries, seasonal clothing and unconditional love. "We talk to them. Lots of people share their stories, and we cry with them. There is a lot to be learned out there. They are people too, and they need us," Clark said. Co-workers at Norman Healthplex nominated Clark for her tenderness to society's discarded. "This is her way of honoring him. She knows that people out here still have a story, still human beings and they still have a purpose in life. She knows her father was a good person and just lost his way," said Gaye Schmidt. "She not only gives them bags of necessities, but she sits and talks with them. She wants to know them and find out their story and make them feel important." Anthony Wuestenfeld with First Fidelity Bank helped us surprise Clark with $400. "It sounds like she's doing such a great thing and such a worthy cause," he said. "For that, we want to give you $400 to Pay it 4Ward." Clark pledges to use every penny to purchase backpacks and school supplies for 15 homeless children she's encountered along her journey. Her mission is to give a loving hand up to those who need it most. Clark said, by sacrificing a few meals out each month, it gives her enough money to have an impact on the homeless in Oklahoma City.
