The Remarkable Benefits of Okinawan Diet for Type 2 Diabetics
For full article, please go to: https://www.selfprinciple.org/remarkable-benefits-okinawan-diet-type-2-diabetics/ Website: https://www.selfprinciple.org Twitter: https://twitter.com/SELF_Principle Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SELFPrinciple.org Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/selfprinciple/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/selfprinciple/ The obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic continues to increase. Although, there have been multiple explanations, the central theme continues to revolve around nutritionally poor, energy dense diets and sedentary lifestyles. The research has consistently shown that high intakes of whole-grains, whole plant based foods and low amounts of red meat, sugar, salt and high fat foods are essential foundations of a healthy lifestyle. In fact, these are the basic principles in the Mediterranean, DASH, plant based and Okinawan diets. So, what would happen to someone’s weight and diabetes, if they diligently followed these principles? Lucky for us, we have a wonderful study looking at just that. In a 28 week (12 weeks intervention and 16 weeks follow-up), prospective study, the authors looked at the effects of an Okinawan-based Nordic diet on 30 type 2 diabetic participants. After the 12-week intervention, there was an average of 14 pounds (6.2kg) weight loss. This was despite the fact that the average calorie intake was 1900 kcal/day. We already know that just 11 pounds of weight loss can reduce the risk of diabetes as much as 50%. There is also lots of literature showing that 5% weight loss can result in lower sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol. The participants achieved a 7% weight loss in this study. Even more remarkable was the fact that average hemoglobin A1c (a test that tells your average blood sugar over last 3 months) dropped by 20%. This is better those most oral diabetes medications. Although the study had some remarkable results, there were some important limitations to be aware of. First, this was a small study (only 30 people) with a short duration (28 weeks total). In addition, there was no control arm. Despite these shortcomings, it is still incredible to see the power of food. The take home message of this study is very simple: a whole foods diet built around whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes and low in salt, sugar, fat and processed foods should be the staple for every diabetic.

When we look at the health status of Americans today it's alarming to see that sixty percent are either overweight or obese. In addition, diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, Cancer and heart disorders are the leading cause of so many complications and deaths every year. Could it have something to do with what we eat? After all, every one in four Americans visits a fast food restaurant daily and with such easy access to quick-fix foods, we tend to forget the poor health value those foods actually offer. Maybe it's the sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise that we've become so accustomed to as a media-dependent world. Whatever the cause of these diseases, a solution has arrived.... The NEWSTART Lifestyle Center offers an enriching program where patients can get a healing of mind, body and soul. Plant-Based Diets and Diabetes
We’ve known for a half century that plant-based diets are associated with lower diabetes risk, but how low does one have to optimally go on animal product and junk food consumption? Diabetes Type 2, How Reverse to a Healthy Life; John C. Butler's Testimony
John C. Butler, Esquire, was a practicing attorney in Woodbury, New Jersey, when type 2 diabetes ended his career and almost ended his life. He was suffering from a blind left eye (retinopathy), hearts disease, high blood pressure, and a list of other complications too long to recount here, all related to his diabetes. John felt he would suffer the fate of both his parents and succumb to the disease. Fortunately, he discovered the God-given plan that has led him back to health--diabetes free health! He would like to share that life saving, health saving, quality of life restoring plan with you. About the program: Health science is just that--a science. It is a discipline that if learned and applied, can add years of disease-free, quality living to our lives. No one knows health science better than our Maker. Yet, many people have no idea that religion can teach anything about science--in this case, health science. But to the sheer delight of many, those who have applied the Bible's teachings about health principles have discovered that God, indeed, knows more about health--how to keep it and how to regain it--than anyone else! It is our hope that this seminar will convince you to personally try out God's counsel and experience first-hand the wisdom of His insightful ways! -Mark Jagitsch, Pastor, Tranquility Seventh-day Adventist Church www.tranquilitysda.org - Dr. José H.Cortés, President of Seventh-day Adventist Church in New Jersey - James Greene, Vice-President - Modesto Vázquez, Vice President for Finance - Jorge F. Ma'a Lahi TV aims to address the NCD crisis in Tonga. The problem of NCDs is at a critical level in Tonga. With an increasing number of Tongans being affected by heart disease, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and smoking-related illnesses, Tonga Health was established to combat this burden of disease and promote healthy lifestyle changes throughout Tonga. Tonga Health uses evidence-based approaches to increase the knowledge, skills and resources of key organisations through advocacy for and promotion of healthy environments and healthy living. What are NCDs? Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, are not passed from person to person. They are of long duration and generally slow progression. The 4 main types of non-communicable diseases are cardiovascular diseases (like heart attacks and stroke), cancers, chronic respiratory diseases (such as chronic obstructed pulmonary disease and asthma) and diabetes. These 4 groups of diseases account for 82% of all NCD deaths. Tobacco use, physical inactivity, the harmful use of alcohol and unhealthy diets all increase the risk of dying from an NCD.

Since then, medical science has confirmed the benefits of a plant-based diet, and correspondingly the dangers of a high-fat, animal-product based diet. Most recently, National Geographic magazine published a cover article on longevity, which featured Seventh-day Adventists. The article calls Ellen White "an early figure who helped shape the Adventist Church," and says that because of her vegetarian-diet prescription, Adventists, "rank among America's longevity all-stars."

Diet Secrets for Living Past 100
Blue zones are regions on Earth where the local human population enjoys exceptionally long average life spans. Author and explorer Dan Buettner has studied these populations and the dietary and lifestyle elements they have in common. Buettner's latest book is "The Blues Zones Solution" (http://goo.gl/r0jc5c). Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/blue-zones-and-diet Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript - Blue Zones areas are populations around the world where people live longest. It began with a ten year project with National Geographic to identify these pockets where people are either reaching age 100 at the highest rates. They have the highest life expectancy or the lowest rate of middle age mortality. They’re geographically defined and then demographically confirmed. And we found five Blue Zones. We found our first Blue Zone in Sardinia, Italy up in the highlands. The Nuoro and Ogliastra Provinces and there we see a population of about 42,000 people living in 14 villages. And there is where men live the longest. Normally in First World populations like the United States for every one male centenarian there are five female centenarians. But up in the highlands of Sardinia the proportion is one to one. Our second Blue Zone we found in Okinawa, Japan, the longest living women in the world. Highest life expectancy of any other population on Earth. They’re women over 60. They live about eight years longer than American women. Largely devoid of heart disease and the cancers that kill us. One of the more extraordinary Blue Zones is Ikaria, Greece, off the coast of Turkey. Ninety-nine square miles. They live about seven years longer than the average American but most interestingly they almost completely allude dementia. We found almost everybody over 70 on the island and found only three mild cases of dementia. In America with a similar population you’d expect to find somewhere around 20 to 40 percent of people who are suffering from dementia. Then in Latin America the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. And then finally in the United States the longest living population is among the Seventh Day Adventist in Loma Linda, California. And they live up to a decade longer than their North American counterparts. So I spent ten years traveling to these Blue Zones around the world trying to explain why they’re living so long. And I realized at about year six that none of these spry centenarians ever said to themselves at age 50, well gosh darn it I’m going to get on that longevity diet and live another 50 years. They never bought treadmills. They never called an 800 number to buy a supplement. Longevity happened to them. In other words it was something that ensued from their environment as opposed to something they tried for. First of all they were eating a high carbohydrate diet. About 65 percent of their dietary intake came from carbs. Most of those, of course, are whole grains or beans. Beans is the cornerstone of every longevity diet in the world, about a cup of beans a day. About 20 percent of their dietary intake was fats and most of those were vegetable fats. And about 15 percent were proteins. They did eat meat on average about five times per month so not a lot of meat. It’s mostly a plant based diet. About 90 percent overall of their calories came from plants. They tended to eat a huge breakfast. Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. Nuts were the universal snack. People eating a handful of nuts lived two to three years longer than people who don’t eat nuts. And they drink water, teas, coffee – good news. A lot of antioxidants in coffee. And then a little bit of wine. Those were the four beverages. Soda pops were largely unknown to Blue Zone longevity all stars. The maximum average life expectancy for people living in America today is about 90. So that essentially means if we can avoid all the avoidable diseases like many cancers, most heart disease, many sources of dementia and diabetes, the average person can reach about age 90. And in Costa Rica they’re doing it at a rate two-and-a-half times better than we’re doing it in the United States with one-fifteenth the amount we spend on health care.

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. The damage to the pancreatic cells leads to reduced ability or complete inability to create insulin. Some of the common causes that trigger this autoimmune response may include a virus, GMO organisms, heavy metals, vaccines, or foods like wheat, cows milk, and soy. The reason foods like wheat and cows milk have been linked to diabetes is because they contain the proteins gluten and A1 casein. These proteins can cause leaky gut which in turn causes systemic inflammation throughout the body and overtime can lead to autoimmune disease. In order to reduce the autoimmune response and improve type 1 diabetes, I suggest you implement the advice in this article and follow the steps I layout for you here: 4 Steps to Heal Leaky Gut and Autoimmune Disease. Type 1 Diabetes is rarely reversed but with the right dietary changes major improvements in blood sugar levels can be seen and a person can often reduce their dependence on insulin and medications. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and is caused by insulin resistance. It is a metabolic disorder that is caused by high blood sugar. The body can keep up for a period of time by producing more insulin, but over time the insulin receptors sites get burned out. Now, we know the main causative factors in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes include foods that spike blood sugar levels and cause intestinal inflammation. Next, let’s go over the top foods you MUST get out of your diet to reverse type 2 diabetes and support overall health for type 1 diabetes. Foods You Must Remove to Reverse Diabetes Naturally Refined sugar rapidly spikes blood glucose and soda, fruit juice and other sugary beverages are the worst culprits. These forms of sugar enter the blood stream rapidly and can cause extreme elevations in blood glucose. Even though natural sweeteners like raw honey and maple syrup are better options, they can still affect blood sugar. Your best option is to switch to stevia. Grains, especially gluten containing grains like wheat, contain large amounts of carbohydrates which are broken down into sugar within a few minutes of consumption. As discussed earlier, gluten can cause intestinal inflammation which affects hormones like cortisol and leptin, and can lead to spikes in blood sugar. I would remove all grains from your diet for your first 90 days on this healing program and after that time you can introduce back in sprouted ancient grains in small amounts. Conventional cow’s milk, should be eliminated especially for type 1 diabetics. Dairy can be a fantastic food for balancing blood sugar if it comes from goat’s, sheep, or A2 cows. Stay away from all other forms of dairy because the A1 casein produced by conventional cows will harm the body and trigger an immune response similar to gluten. When buying dairy, only purchase raw and organic from pasture raised animals. Alcohol can dangerously increase blood sugar and lead to liver toxicity. Beer and sweet liquors are high in carbohydrates and should be avoided. GMO corn, soy, and canola have been linked to kidney and liver disease and may promote diabetes. I suggest removing all GMO foods and all packaged foods from your diet. Also, remove hydrogenated oils from your diet including vegetable oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, and canola oil. Top Foods to Cure Diabetes If you want to reverse diabetes quickly or prevent diabetes I suggest you add the following foods into your diet. High fiber foods help slow down glucose absorption. Aim for at least 30g of fiber per day from vegetables, avocados, berries, nuts, and seeds. Foods high in chromium can improve GTF glucose tolerance factor in your body and naturally balance out blood glucose levels. Broccoli, raw cheese, green beans and grass-fed beef are all high in chromium, however broccoli has the highest amounts by far. MCFA’s found in coconut and red palm oil can help balance blood sugar levels and be a preferred fuel source for your body rather than sugar. Wild-caught fish contain Omega-3 fats and reduce inflammation which can help counteract some of the negative effects of elevated blood glucose. Foods with a low glycemic load tend to not spike blood sugar as much as high glycemic foods. Low glycemic foods include vegetables, nuts, seeds, avocados, coconut, organic meat, eggs, wild caught fish and raw pastured dairy.

What The Adventist Health Study Shows About Diet And The Longest Living People In The World
Hans Diehl takes a look at a comprehensive study by The Adventist about the correlations between a healthy diet and long life. If Your Future's Not What it Used to Be, Why Not Get a New One! Take Bob Anderson, age 66. Before, he couldn't even walk to his mailbox. Afterward, he traveled 300 miles to his doctor's appointment over the Rockies-on a bicycle. For an encore, he bicycled 3,000 miles across Canada. What made the difference? The principles Hans Diehl shows, in case after case, that health derelicts can become dynamos by simplifying their diet, eating unrefined foods, using natural remedies such as hot and cold water treatments, and exercising. Through powerfully motivating stories of changed lives Hans conveys the rules for vibrant health, as well as how to shed bitterness, find new peace of mind, and recover a close connection with God. Miracles Of A Plant-Based Diet
A presentation by Grace Chen, MD Last year, Dr. Chen explored how some of the common chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, can be treated with lifestyle changes. This year, she will speak about her experiences working with patients at ʻEkahi Health System’s Dr. Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease™. In addition, she will delve into some of the less well-known benefits of a plant -based diet. She will talk about arthritis and other auto-immune diseases, such as asthma and skin conditions in this lecture. Grace Chen, MD, is a board-certified emergency physician with a special interest in lifestyle medicine. After observing many preventable chronic diseases in the emergency room, she was inspired to create a website: 365 Days of Graceful Living at http://graceinhawaii.com, dedicated to educating people about how chronic diseases can be prevented through lifestyle changes. She films her YouTube videos in the beautiful outdoor environment of Hawaii. In her free time, she enjoys experimenting with new recipes, tending to her garden, swimming in the ocean, and scaling mountains! She also loves the serenity of practicing yoga. Note: We share the building with a ballroom dancing group, sometimes when their music is extra loud you may hear it in the background.
