NEWSTART Promo 2012
When we look at the health status of Americans today it's alarming to see that sixty percent are either overweight or obese. In addition, diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, Cancer and heart disorders are the leading cause of so many complications and deaths every year. Could it have something to do with what we eat? After all, every one in four Americans visits a fast food restaurant daily and with such easy access to quick-fix foods, we tend to forget the poor health value those foods actually offer. Maybe it's the sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise that we've become so accustomed to as a media-dependent world. Whatever the cause of these diseases, a solution has arrived.... The Remarkable Benefits of Okinawan Diet for Type 2 Diabetics
For full article, please go to: https://www.selfprinciple.org/remarkable-benefits-okinawan-diet-type-2-diabetics/ Website: https://www.selfprinciple.org Twitter: https://twitter.com/SELF_Principle Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SELFPrinciple.org Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/selfprinciple/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/selfprinciple/ The obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic continues to increase. Although, there have been multiple explanations, the central theme continues to revolve around nutritionally poor, energy dense diets and sedentary lifestyles. The research has consistently shown that high intakes of whole-grains, whole plant based foods and low amounts of red meat, sugar, salt and high fat foods are essential foundations of a healthy lifestyle. In fact, these are the basic principles in the Mediterranean, DASH, plant based and Okinawan diets. So, what would happen to someone’s weight and diabetes, if they diligently followed these principles? Lucky for us, we have a wonderful study looking at just that. In a 28 week (12 weeks intervention and 16 weeks follow-up), prospective study, the authors looked at the effects of an Okinawan-based Nordic diet on 30 type 2 diabetic participants. After the 12-week intervention, there was an average of 14 pounds (6.2kg) weight loss. This was despite the fact that the average calorie intake was 1900 kcal/day. We already know that just 11 pounds of weight loss can reduce the risk of diabetes as much as 50%. There is also lots of literature showing that 5% weight loss can result in lower sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol. The participants achieved a 7% weight loss in this study. Even more remarkable was the fact that average hemoglobin A1c (a test that tells your average blood sugar over last 3 months) dropped by 20%. This is better those most oral diabetes medications. Although the study had some remarkable results, there were some important limitations to be aware of. First, this was a small study (only 30 people) with a short duration (28 weeks total). In addition, there was no control arm. Despite these shortcomings, it is still incredible to see the power of food. The take home message of this study is very simple: a whole foods diet built around whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes and low in salt, sugar, fat and processed foods should be the staple for every diabetic.

Ma'a Lahi TV aims to address the NCD crisis in Tonga. The problem of NCDs is at a critical level in Tonga. With an increasing number of Tongans being affected by heart disease, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and smoking-related illnesses, Tonga Health was established to combat this burden of disease and promote healthy lifestyle changes throughout Tonga. Tonga Health uses evidence-based approaches to increase the knowledge, skills and resources of key organisations through advocacy for and promotion of healthy environments and healthy living. What are NCDs? Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, are not passed from person to person. They are of long duration and generally slow progression. The 4 main types of non-communicable diseases are cardiovascular diseases (like heart attacks and stroke), cancers, chronic respiratory diseases (such as chronic obstructed pulmonary disease and asthma) and diabetes. These 4 groups of diseases account for 82% of all NCD deaths. Tobacco use, physical inactivity, the harmful use of alcohol and unhealthy diets all increase the risk of dying from an NCD.

What The Adventist Health Study Shows About Diet And The Longest Living People In The World
Hans Diehl takes a look at a comprehensive study by The Adventist about the correlations between a healthy diet and long life. If Your Future's Not What it Used to Be, Why Not Get a New One! Take Bob Anderson, age 66. Before, he couldn't even walk to his mailbox. Afterward, he traveled 300 miles to his doctor's appointment over the Rockies-on a bicycle. For an encore, he bicycled 3,000 miles across Canada. What made the difference? The principles Hans Diehl shows, in case after case, that health derelicts can become dynamos by simplifying their diet, eating unrefined foods, using natural remedies such as hot and cold water treatments, and exercising. Through powerfully motivating stories of changed lives Hans conveys the rules for vibrant health, as well as how to shed bitterness, find new peace of mind, and recover a close connection with God. Reversing Diabetes, Michael Snyder MD
Since then, medical science has confirmed the benefits of a plant-based diet, and correspondingly the dangers of a high-fat, animal-product based diet. Most recently, National Geographic magazine published a cover article on longevity, which featured Seventh-day Adventists. The article calls Ellen White "an early figure who helped shape the Adventist Church," and says that because of her vegetarian-diet prescription, Adventists, "rank among America's longevity all-stars."

Diabetes - Why Is It Increasing So Rapidly? with Hans Diehl
Hans Diehl, DrHSc, MPH, FACN, program founder and Clinical Professor of Preventative Medicine at Loma Linda University, uses his years of experience in the area of lifestyle medicine and charismatic presentation style to guide participants through the fascinating research surrounding dietary and lifestyle choices and our health. Hans teaches an affordable, lifestyle enrichment program designed to reduce disease risk factors through the adoption of better health habits and appropriate lifestyle modifications. The goal is to lower blood cholesterol, hypertension, and blood sugar levels and reduce excess weight. This is done by improving dietary choices, enhancing daily exercise, increasing support systems and decreasing stress, thus aiding in preventing and reversing disease. Han’s recommendations are based on the fact that 75% or more of our Western diseases are “lifestyle-related,” according to the U.S. Surgeon General[1]. These diseases are connected to our processed diet; lack of exercise; overuse of cigarettes, alcohol, and caffeine; increased levels of stress; and the quality of our support systems. These diseases include: Heart Disease Stroke Hypertension Diabetes Overweight Certain adult cancers Diverticular disease Constipation Heartburn Arthritis Impotence Depression/Anxiety Fatigue Connect with The Real Truth About Health http://www.therealtruthabouthealth.com/ https://www.facebook.com/The-Real-Truth-About-Health-467500836655781/ https://twitter.com/RTAHealth Passionate believers in whole food plant based diets, no chemicals, minimal pharmaceutical drugs, no GMO's. How To Cure Diabetes Naturally Without Medication - Cure Diabetes at Home
How To Cure Diabetes Naturally Without Medication - Cure Diabetes at Home The Cause of Diabetes Diabetes is an illness related to elevated blood sugar levels. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. The damage to the pancreatic cells leads to reduced ability or complete inability to create insulin. Some of the common causes that trigger this autoimmune response may include a virus, GMO organisms, heavy metals, vaccines, or foods like wheat, cows milk, and soy. The reason foods like wheat and cows milk have been linked to diabetes is because they contain the proteins gluten and A1 casein. These proteins can cause leaky gut which in turn causes systemic inflammation throughout the body and overtime can lead to autoimmune disease. In order to reduce the autoimmune response and improve type 1 diabetes, I suggest you implement the advice in this article and follow the steps I layout for you here: 4 Steps to Heal Leaky Gut and Autoimmune Disease. Type 1 Diabetes is rarely reversed but with the right dietary changes major improvements in blood sugar levels can be seen and a person can often reduce their dependence on insulin and medications. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and is caused by insulin resistance. It is a metabolic disorder that is caused by high blood sugar. The body can keep up for a period of time by producing more insulin, but over time the insulin receptors sites get burned out. Now, we know the main causative factors in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes include foods that spike blood sugar levels and cause intestinal inflammation. Next, let’s go over the top foods you MUST get out of your diet to reverse type 2 diabetes and support overall health for type 1 diabetes. Foods You Must Remove to Reverse Diabetes Naturally Refined sugar rapidly spikes blood glucose and soda, fruit juice and other sugary beverages are the worst culprits. These forms of sugar enter the blood stream rapidly and can cause extreme elevations in blood glucose. Even though natural sweeteners like raw honey and maple syrup are better options, they can still affect blood sugar. Your best option is to switch to stevia. Grains, especially gluten containing grains like wheat, contain large amounts of carbohydrates which are broken down into sugar within a few minutes of consumption. As discussed earlier, gluten can cause intestinal inflammation which affects hormones like cortisol and leptin, and can lead to spikes in blood sugar. I would remove all grains from your diet for your first 90 days on this healing program and after that time you can introduce back in sprouted ancient grains in small amounts. Conventional cow’s milk, should be eliminated especially for type 1 diabetics. Dairy can be a fantastic food for balancing blood sugar if it comes from goat’s, sheep, or A2 cows. Stay away from all other forms of dairy because the A1 casein produced by conventional cows will harm the body and trigger an immune response similar to gluten. When buying dairy, only purchase raw and organic from pasture raised animals. Alcohol can dangerously increase blood sugar and lead to liver toxicity. Beer and sweet liquors are high in carbohydrates and should be avoided. GMO corn, soy, and canola have been linked to kidney and liver disease and may promote diabetes. I suggest removing all GMO foods and all packaged foods from your diet. Also, remove hydrogenated oils from your diet including vegetable oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, and canola oil. Top Foods to Cure Diabetes If you want to reverse diabetes quickly or prevent diabetes I suggest you add the following foods into your diet. High fiber foods help slow down glucose absorption. Aim for at least 30g of fiber per day from vegetables, avocados, berries, nuts, and seeds. Foods high in chromium can improve GTF glucose tolerance factor in your body and naturally balance out blood glucose levels. Broccoli, raw cheese, green beans and grass-fed beef are all high in chromium, however broccoli has the highest amounts by far. MCFA’s found in coconut and red palm oil can help balance blood sugar levels and be a preferred fuel source for your body rather than sugar. Wild-caught fish contain Omega-3 fats and reduce inflammation which can help counteract some of the negative effects of elevated blood glucose. Foods with a low glycemic load tend to not spike blood sugar as much as high glycemic foods. Low glycemic foods include vegetables, nuts, seeds, avocados, coconut, organic meat, eggs, wild caught fish and raw pastured dairy.

Large Study Comparing Deaths Of 7th Day Adventists Who Eat Plant-Based Diet Versus Animal Products
The convergence of evidence suggests that an affordable plant-based diet can help prevent and even reverse some of the top killer diseases in the Western world, and can be even more effective than medication and surgery. This could save Medicare billions of dollars, but medical training continues to underemphasize nutrition education , in part, perhaps, because lifestyle interventions go against the prevailing conventional wisdom. The USDA, in formulating its dietary guidelines, has been accused of both acting with bias and ignoring relevant research. However, the most recent guidelines take a step in the right direction by recommending a shift to a plant-based diet, which Kaiser Permanente, the largest U.S. managed care organization, has moved in the direction of supporting. Lifestyle medicine attempts to find, prevent, and treat the causes of disease. Patients should receive fully informed consent for treatment, meaning they should be informed about all of their options including dietary changes. Doctors report they don’t practice preventative cardiology because they fear their patients won’t change their diet. Kim Allan Williams, MD, MACC, FAHA, MASNC, FESC was born in Chicago, and attended the College of The University of Chicago (1971 to 1975), followed by the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine (1975 to 1979), internal medicine residency at Emory University (1979 to 1982), and overlapping fellowships in Cardiology at the University of Chicago (1982 to 1985), Clinical Pharmacology (1984 to 1985), and Nuclear Medicine (1984 to 1986). He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. Dr. Williams joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1986, specializing in clinical cardiology, nuclear medicine, and nuclear cardiology. He served as Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Director of Nuclear Cardiology at The University of Chicago School of Medicine until 2010. Among numerous awards and honors for his teaching in the medical school, residencies and fellowships, he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in 2008. In 2010, he became the Dorothy Susan Timmis Endowed Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Chairman of the Division of Cardiology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI. At Wayne State, he has started the Urban Cardiology Initiative – a program of education of physicians on disparities in healthcare, primary school education on cardiovascular health and community health screening in inner-city Detroit. In November 2013 he returned to Chicago as the James B. Herrick Endowed Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Williams has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, monographs, book chapters, editorials, and review articles in the field of nuclear cardiology and minority health issues, with emphasis on education and innovations in perfusion imaging and quantitation of ventricular function. His research interests include selective adenosine receptor agonists, fluorinated perfusion PET imaging, cardiac computed tomography for plaque characterization, health care disparities and payment policy, and appropriate use of cardiac imaging. Dr. Williams has served on numerous committees and boards at the national level, including the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC), the American Heart Association (AHA), the American Medical Association (AMA), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the Certifying Board of Nuclear Cardiology, the Certifying Board of Cardiac Computed Tomography, the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC). He served as President of ASNC from 2004 to 2005. He served as Chairman of the Board of ABC from 2008 to 2010.
