Simple Stirling Engine Homemade
How to make Simple Stirling engine homemade using test tube and syringe. Read full text here. http://www.newphysicist.com/make-simple-stirling-engine/ In this project, we will give you simple instructions to make a very simple DIY Stirling engine using test tube and syringe. You can make this simple Stirling engine at home. At the end of this project, we will discuss the importance of concentrated solar thermal power in the future of Stirling engine technology. Let’s make Stirling engine today. A Stirling engine is a heat engine that operates by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas (the working fluid) at different temperatures, such that there is a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work. More specifically, the Stirling engine is a closed-cycle regenerative heat engine with a permanently gaseous working fluid. Diy stirling engine Project: Stirling engines have a high efficiency compared to steam engines, being able to reach 50% efficiency. They are also capable of quiet operation and can use almost any heat source. The heat energy source is generated external to the Stirling engine rather than by internal combustion as with the Otto cycle or Diesel cycle engines.

Cheap & Simple Stirling Engine Generator
This is the newest configuration of my small Stirling engine, designed to be as simple and inexpensive as possible yet reasonably durable. It uses passive thermosyphon cooling with about a gallon of water. With the generator and regulator it's able to run lights and radios, charge phones and other batteries, and a myriad of other uses. Here are the components: SS water bottle cylinder, 2 tuna cans for heat shield and water jacket, soda can exhaust stack and water tower, threaded rod supports, cake pan base, mower tire flywheel, hard drive magnet balancer, standard 3/16" rod crank, inner tube diaphragm, aluminum bar frame, SS wool regenerative displacer, 3/4" plywood block and bearing supports, 7 stock ball bearings, a stepped pulley off Ebay, and a scrounged inkjet motor for the generator. It's a little loud but not overly so. With the handle it's easily carried around. You'll notice that it takes very little time to get up to about 1,000 rpm when I crank up the heat. Although it will run on many fuels, for my purposes propane is the most convenient. I refill my own propane bottles for about $1 each. Please 'Like' and 'Subscribe'. And thanks for watching!

Homemade Stirling Engine (alpha type)
Hot air engine working with a heat flux between a hot and a cold glass syringe. The efficiency of the real cycle is calculated to be 14% but the way of heating the syringe is not efficient. There are also a lot of losses in friction so that the global efficiency is around 1%. It may look easy to build but to make it work it's another matter!

Free Tin Can Stirling Engine Plans, DIY Science Projects HK1
A cool Science Fair project Plans page now FREE: http://comptune.com/tincan.php (Your donations will go to needy children, however.) These plans offer more than just the design and diagrams. They explain the technique I use for making many small projects out of recycled metal cans. Stirling engines are easy to build. These plans can be put together in just a few hours using simple hand tools. It took me a lot longer to write the plans and draw all the sketches than it did to build it. As a kid, I once thought "Sterling" was the correct spelling but I later learned that these engines are named after Robert Sterling, a clever clergyman in the 1800's, who added a "regenerator" to a regular heat engine to improve efficiency. Today, with modern materials, Stirling engines are getting another look because of their ability to use any heat / cold source for power! I have run a model like this one on liquid nitrogen as well as ice.

Closed-cycle, in this context, means a thermodynamic system in which the working fluid is permanently contained within the system, and regenerative describes the use of a specific type of internal heat exchanger and thermal store, known as the regenerator. The inclusion of a regenerator differentiates the Stirling engine from other closed cycle hot air engines. Originally conceived in 1816 as an industrial prime mover to rival the steam engine, its practical use was largely confined to low-power domestic applications for over a century. Stirling engines have a high efficiency compared to steam engines, being able to reach 50% efficiency. They are also capable of quiet operation and can use almost any heat source. The heat energy source is generated external to the Stirling engine rather than by internal combustion as with the Otto cycle or Diesel cycle engines. Because the Stirling engine is compatible with alternative and renewable energy sources it could become increasingly significant as the price of conventional fuels rises, and also in light of concerns such as depletion of oil supplies and climate change. This type of engine is currently generating interest as the core component of micro combined heat and power (CHP) units, in which it is more efficient and safer than a comparable steam engine. However, it has a low power-to-weight ratio, rendering it more suitable for use in static installations where space and weight are not at a premium. Soda can Stirling engine - 860 rpm
[It's more interesting if you advance past the 2:00 minute mark] This is my second attempt at a simple soda can engine. It will run slowly on one or two tea candles, but on an alcohol flame, as I show in this video, it really flies and I've clocked it at 860 rpm! The displacer is actually a moving regenerator, a single piece of steel wool trimmed and shaped to fit the soda can and held in place with perforated bottoms from other soda cans. The diaphragm is made of bicycle inner tube rubber, the bottom of a soda can, a bottle cap, and a 1.5" PVC cap trimmed down a bit. It's attached to the cylinder can with a 1/2" PVC elbow. The crank is of 1/8" stainless steel rod, the flywheel is the lid from a paint can, counterweights are magnets from old hard drives. The smokestack is made from a rolled-up soda can. I used some aluminum foil tape to hold things together. I found it a bit difficult to get the thing balanced and it's still not quite right, but at least it doesn't jump around too terribly even at high rpm's. A lot of fun to build and even more to run!

Small DIY Stirling engine drives 19" fan, 350 rpm!
I'm pushing the limits of this model engine I built and couldn't resist trying out a discarded 19" box fan blade on it. Wasn't sure it would even drive it but it surprised me - turned it at a decent 350 rpm, enough to really move some air. I had thought of adapting this for a wood stove fan and I think it would work. I still need to quiet down the diaphragm a bit since it slaps under acceleration, but even as-is the noise level is quite tolerable. It's so much fun watching one's own little engine do stuff like this!

Stirling Engine With Magnet Return Stroke And Timelapse Build
This Stirling Engine uses neodymium magnets in the displacer and slide piston to control the return stroke of the displacer. A third magnet above the displacer balances the forces to minimize friction in the glass cylinder. All pistons are made of graphite. The main cylinder is a Pyrex test tube. Engine is machined in brass and aluminum. The base is Corian. The flame uses isopropyl alcohol. Special thanks to Jan Ridders for sharing his original design and offering constant guidance and suggestions during the build. A diy Stirling engine and a cup of tea
My self-built low temperature difference Ross yoke Stirling engine, running on a cup of tea. Graphite piston/glass cylinder, Ross yoke drive. Stirling or heat engines work by heating and cooling an enclosed amount of a gas, in this case, air.The bottom plate is hot, and the top plate is cold here. The greater the temp. difference between hot and cold sides, the greater the power output. This design is known as a 'gamma type', and will work with a difference of 5 degrees C. There are also 'alpha and beta' type Stirling engines. Loads of info on the web available.... The white linkage is known as a 'Ross yoke', after Andy Ross. It converts cyclic crank motion into 2 almost linear motions, 90 degrees out of phase with each other, exactly what you need for a Stirling engine. Plus, it looks nice :o) At one time, a Stirling engine with a generator attached, and mounted at the focus of a large parabolic mirror, held the record for solar to electric power conversion efficiency (25%), which at that time (1980s) was very much better than solar (PV) panels available. Stirling engine research is worldwide. If you drive one backwards, you get hot and cold ends - this is used as a cryocooler sometimes (for producing very low temperatures).

1685 rpm 10-watt DIY Stirling engine
I've been working to raise the speed of this little engine and checking that it will cope with the increased stresses. This video shows that it can take it. I'm running it on a Bunsen burner hooked to a propane bottle to be able to run the heater head red hot. Water is circulating through the cooling jacket from a tiny pump. I had cut the base off so placed steel wool pads under the legs to absorb any vibrations. I'm pretty pleased with how this engine is doing and I'm thinking it's about maxed out. Next step - to measure the power output. [Update: max power = 10.4 watts @ 1000 rpm, measured on the shaft; Max torque = 1.06 lb-in. @ 540 rpm]

Large Stirling Engine 4 - 560 rpm
The engine is now quieter, faster, and more powerful, although still not performing as hoped. I am able to pressurize it somewhat and it makes a big difference on power. On one of its best runs I was not able to stop it with both hands holding the 5/8" shaft. It seems to run comfortably at about 520 rpm with no load, although I've had it up to 615 rpm. I would expect to load it down until it stabilized at about 300 rpm. Now I need to get away from the propane and run it on a pellet gasifier or rocket stove, and also get some power measurements. I'll have to build a bigger Prony brake for this one! Lots of fun playing with this engine and imagining how useful it could be!

What is the stirling engine? A Stirling engine is a heat engine that operates by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas, the working fluid, at different temperature levels such that there is a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work. The engine is like a steam engine in that all of the engine's heat flows in and out through the engine wall. How it works? This is traditionally known as an external combustion engine in contrast to an internal combustion engine where the heat input is by combustion of a fuel within the body of the working fluid. Unlike the steam engine's use of water in both its liquid and gaseous phases as the working fluid, the Stirling engine encloses a fixed quantity of permanently gaseous fluid such as air or helium. As in all heat engines, the general cycle consists of compressing cool gas, heating the gas, expanding the hot gas, and finally cooling the gas before repeating the cycle. You can put the stirling motor toy in top of hot water to make the temperature difference. You also can put it in top of ICE to get the termperature difference, Just enjoy the toy! ------- Playlists: Awesome illusions: http://goo.gl/jvvPvs Rubik's Cube: http://goo.gl/GmGlsb MMA / Grappling: http://goo.gl/qsr5WN Wrestling: http://goo.gl/rg8Fkc DIY Gym: http://goo.gl/0RG3uV Magnetism: http://goo.gl/Pk8dV0 Science / Education: http://goo.gl/iAe7EM LEDs: http://goo.gl/3rbfRf How To, Life Hacks: http://goo.gl/tYW33S DIY: http://goo.gl/Rxmre4 Playing Cards: http://goo.gl/IBCMZE RC: http://goo.gl/j3e5K0 Electrical Electronics: http://goo.gl/E3oIKn Science / School Projects: http://goo.gl/2J8QxR Gaming / Poker: http://goo.gl/UqntNf Elevator: http://goo.gl/Zh7Slq Physics / Mechanics: http://goo.gl/AJnoEh Tools / Equipment: http://goo.gl/3yhIF1 Necessity is the Mother of Invention: http://goo.gl/115cZZ Outdoors Nature: http://goo.gl/oH6ra5 Coasters / Rides: http://goo.gl/tjnDbM First Look / Reviews: http://goo.gl/SzlMEh Lasers: http://goo.gl/qT5dMM Gymnastics: http://goo.gl/uDZbjm Gymnastics Level 7: http://goo.gl/9oKS7M

Lamina 2 Plans - Stirling Like engine plans
http://www.BuildSomethingUseful.com This is the plans video for the Lamina 2 engine. Watch the Lamina 2 video to see it reach 850 rpm from a candle and 1723 rpm from propane. While it does spin really fast with the use of propane, it's not a good idea to use propane since the heat can melt the pyrex test tube. And a lot of the engine components aren't strong enough for that kind of power. I am beginning to use stainless steel in place of pyrex test tubes so future engines should be able to handle more heat.

Small DIY Stirling engine charges cell phone
This is my most useful Stirling engine so far. Running on a 3-wick candle it will run for hours and charge a cell phone or run small electronic devices. On an alcohol flame it runs much faster and will run larger loads as shown in the video. It seems to be quite durable as well. The main change I've made is to make the displace/regenerator from a spiral sandwich of aluminum mesh and steel wool. This seems to keep the steel wool from compacting and shifting around, a problem I had been experiencing.

This is the best off the shelf diy stirling alpha engine start we have come up with so far. This Stirling Engine has shown signs of successful operation. It also works excellent as a Steam Engine. I have another compressor that I am converting into a DC motor:-) http://www.greenpowerscience.com/ These compressors cost about $100 on EBAY. Make sure you buy the compressor pump at a 90 degree angle. This based on the Alpha Stirling Design that you can find here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling_engine

DIY Stirling engine (LTD gamma type)
a stirling engine made of simple materials, only simple tools were used. Nevertheless it is not really a LTD stirling due to high friction. It needs nearly boiling water on the hot side and some small pieces of an ice cube on the cold side to run.

Attempt to build a large Stirling Engine
This was an initial attempt to build a larger beta-type Stirling engine at minimal cost. The cylinder is from a Bunn coffee maker, the water jacket is a coffee can cut down, the crank is from bolts and scrap steel with standard bearings, the flywheel I purchased from a local scrapyard, the frame is from recycled wood cabinets, the diaphragm is a piece of heavy inner tube rubber and some jar lids and cans, and the conn rods are threaded rods. the displacer is partly an aluminum water bottle and partly SS wool, held together with mesh from used air filters. It ran OK for a while but I have had ongoing problems with the diaphragm. The noise is from the temporary connections I made on the displacer drive. I think the basic concept is workable but there are many details to iron out yet. Thanks for watching! Please 'Like' and Subscribe if you enjoy these things.
