A Stirling engine is a heat engine that operates by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas (the working fluid) at different temperatures, such that there is a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work. More specifically, the Stirling engine is a closed-cycle regenerative heat engine with a permanently gaseous working fluid. Closed-cycle, in this context, means a thermodynamic system in which the working fluid is permanently contained within the system, and regenerative describes the use of a specific type of internal heat exchanger and thermal store, known as the regenerator. The inclusion of a regenerator differentiates the Stirling engine from other closed cycle hot air engines. Originally conceived in 1816 as an industrial prime mover to rival the steam engine, its practical use was largely confined to low-power domestic applications for over a century. Stirling engines have a high efficiency compared to steam engines, being able to reach 50% efficiency. They are also capable of quiet operation and can use almost any heat source. The heat energy source is generated external to the Stirling engine rather than by internal combustion as with the Otto cycle or Diesel cycle engines. Because the Stirling engine is compatible with alternative and renewable energy sources it could become increasingly significant as the price of conventional fuels rises, and also in light of concerns such as depletion of oil supplies and climate change. This type of engine is currently generating interest as the core component of micro combined heat and power (CHP) units, in which it is more efficient and safer than a comparable steam engine. However, it has a low power-to-weight ratio, rendering it more suitable for use in static installations where space and weight are not at a premium. DIY Stirling engine heat pump/refrigerator cools to 36°F
This little Stirling engine continues to surprise me! I thought it would be interesting to try it out as a heat pump (Stirling engines are reversible in function from engine to heat pump) by driving it with the motor/generator for a time and monitor the head temperature compared to the cooling water temp. I inserted the cylinder into an insulated box of 40 cu. in. volume and also monitored the temperature in the box. I taped a thermocouple probe to the bottom of the cylinder and the upper number on the thermometer shows this temperature. I used the non-contact thermometer, the lower number, to monitor the cooling water temp. As you can see, it was able to generate a 57°F temperature drop and cooled the insulated space down to 36°F! That's refrigeration temperature! Actually, as the last photo shows, the temperature of the diaphragm at the top of the cylinder was 102°, a difference of almost 75° between top and bottom! I really didn't expect it to reach such low temps since the engine has a very low compression ratio, so again I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. I'm sure there is a lot of room for improvement yet, too. So now I'm wondering if one of these engines would drive another as a heat pump, or even using several inline? Stay tuned. Very fun stuff! [Note: after I posted this video I tried reversing the wires and driving the engine the other direction - in about 10 minutes the head reached 162 deg. and the box was at 120 deg.]

Cheap & Simple Stirling Engine Generator
This is the newest configuration of my small Stirling engine, designed to be as simple and inexpensive as possible yet reasonably durable. It uses passive thermosyphon cooling with about a gallon of water. With the generator and regulator it's able to run lights and radios, charge phones and other batteries, and a myriad of other uses. Here are the components: SS water bottle cylinder, 2 tuna cans for heat shield and water jacket, soda can exhaust stack and water tower, threaded rod supports, cake pan base, mower tire flywheel, hard drive magnet balancer, standard 3/16" rod crank, inner tube diaphragm, aluminum bar frame, SS wool regenerative displacer, 3/4" plywood block and bearing supports, 7 stock ball bearings, a stepped pulley off Ebay, and a scrounged inkjet motor for the generator. It's a little loud but not overly so. With the handle it's easily carried around. You'll notice that it takes very little time to get up to about 1,000 rpm when I crank up the heat. Although it will run on many fuels, for my purposes propane is the most convenient. I refill my own propane bottles for about $1 each. Please 'Like' and 'Subscribe'. And thanks for watching!

Homemade Twin Walking Beam Stirling Engine
Hi . This is a twin cylinder twin walking beam Stirling engine that i made after watching some other diy Stirling builds , I didn't follow any plans ,just got stuck right in to the build & played it by ear . The most difficult part was getting the fulcrum point right for the walking beams .The displacer cylinders are made from large aerosol cans and the displacer pistons are made from oasis foam as used in flower arranging as it is very light and heat resistant . The base fire box & upper water jackets are cat food cans and tinned fruit cans .The power cylinders are copper pipe with JB WELD pistons , I first assembled the displacer cylinder assembly and temporarily fitted the power cylinder on with blue tac ,i then applied heat to base of displacer to measure how far the power piston moves in the cylinder when the displacer is raised and lowered , this measurement gave me stroke of the power piston and the fixing point on the flywheel crank arms for the power piston con rods , when making the power cylinders make them long enough so that they can be cut to the correct length after the stroke length is determined in the previous heat up test . When building an engine all moving parts must move with no resistance and there should be very little too no air escaping from inside the cylinders .Also the displacer pistons should have enough clearance between the piston & cylinder to allow the air to pass freely from hot too cold end . If you make a hollow displacer piston from a smaller can it must be sealed perfectly around the connecting rod and any other joint so that air pressure from inside the cylinder does not enter the displacer piston can , as this will affect performance . If you use a hollow displacer piston be aware that too much heat could cause the displacer piston to pop or distort due to the air inside expanding .The flywheel can also affect running , if its to small or light , the engine will run in a rough jerking motion between the air expanding & contracting , a heavier flywheel will smooth out this motion . Hope this information helps with any builds you may undertake . Hope you like what i've done so far , It was made in the evenings in my living room with no special tools so if i can do it any one can , just give it a go . Thanks for viewing.Gary

How to Make Stirling Engine - Single Cylinder Tomato Can (Homemade/DIY)
How to make a Stirling engine using a tomato paste can and other household items. This is a single cylinder design or beta configuration. I start out with an overview of the design and a quick explanation of how the Stirling engine works. Then I go step-by-step through its construction, followed by it running and then some construction tips. This one uses a balloon instead of a piston. It uses balsa wood for the displacer cylinder, coat hanger wire for the crankshaft along with a paperclip, a thread to connect the displacer to the paperclip, and a wooden flywheel. The connecting rods are attached to the diaphragm using thumbtacks. Attempt to build a large Stirling Engine
This was an initial attempt to build a larger beta-type Stirling engine at minimal cost. The cylinder is from a Bunn coffee maker, the water jacket is a coffee can cut down, the crank is from bolts and scrap steel with standard bearings, the flywheel I purchased from a local scrapyard, the frame is from recycled wood cabinets, the diaphragm is a piece of heavy inner tube rubber and some jar lids and cans, and the conn rods are threaded rods. the displacer is partly an aluminum water bottle and partly SS wool, held together with mesh from used air filters. It ran OK for a while but I have had ongoing problems with the diaphragm. The noise is from the temporary connections I made on the displacer drive. I think the basic concept is workable but there are many details to iron out yet. Thanks for watching! Please 'Like' and Subscribe if you enjoy these things.

Soda can Stirling engine - 860 rpm
[It's more interesting if you advance past the 2:00 minute mark] This is my second attempt at a simple soda can engine. It will run slowly on one or two tea candles, but on an alcohol flame, as I show in this video, it really flies and I've clocked it at 860 rpm! The displacer is actually a moving regenerator, a single piece of steel wool trimmed and shaped to fit the soda can and held in place with perforated bottoms from other soda cans. The diaphragm is made of bicycle inner tube rubber, the bottom of a soda can, a bottle cap, and a 1.5" PVC cap trimmed down a bit. It's attached to the cylinder can with a 1/2" PVC elbow. The crank is of 1/8" stainless steel rod, the flywheel is the lid from a paint can, counterweights are magnets from old hard drives. The smokestack is made from a rolled-up soda can. I used some aluminum foil tape to hold things together. I found it a bit difficult to get the thing balanced and it's still not quite right, but at least it doesn't jump around too terribly even at high rpm's. A lot of fun to build and even more to run!

http://www.BuildSomethingUseful.com This is the plans video for the Lamina 2 engine. Watch the Lamina 2 video to see it reach 850 rpm from a candle and 1723 rpm from propane. While it does spin really fast with the use of propane, it's not a good idea to use propane since the heat can melt the pyrex test tube. And a lot of the engine components aren't strong enough for that kind of power. I am beginning to use stainless steel in place of pyrex test tubes so future engines should be able to handle more heat.

Homemade Stirling Engine (alpha type)
Hot air engine working with a heat flux between a hot and a cold glass syringe. The efficiency of the real cycle is calculated to be 14% but the way of heating the syringe is not efficient. There are also a lot of losses in friction so that the global efficiency is around 1%. It may look easy to build but to make it work it's another matter!
