Function • Binds with fatty acids and bile in the gut, which are generally attached to bad cholesterol and toxins earmarked for the toilet. • Becomes gel-like in the gut and slows the absorptions of fats and sugars into the blood stream. Benefits • Lowers total cholesterol and LDL or bad cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. • Regulates or slows the blood sugar release from the gut for people with diabetes. Risks • Too much soluble fiber can dehydrate the gut. Have you ever added water to psyllium in a glass? Being a soluble fiber, it will attract water and expand quickly in the glass. If too much soluble fiber is taken, it may pull water away from the gut wall, drying it out. • The expansive effect of soluble fiber can also overly distend the gut. Gastroparesis, commonly known as delayed emptying of the stomach, usually affects people who have diabetes. Damage to the vagus nerve that regulates the movement of the stomach muscles is responsible for this condition. Poor stomach motility slows down emptying of the stomach and affects digestion. Feeling full after eating small amount of food, abdominal pain and bloating, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting are common symptoms of gastroparesis. Dietary changes help in minimizing the symptoms of gastroparesis. High fiber diet, though considered essential for diabetics without gastroparesis for blood sugar management, is not recommended for gastroparesis patients. Instead they should eat foods that are easily digestible and can move through the stomach with ease. 1. Juice Juice is well tolerated by people with gastroparesis. Drink vegetable juice and juices of fruits such as apple, pineapple, prune, cranberry and grape. However, citrus juices should be avoided. Juices can easily pass through the stomach and help in meeting the body’s demand for vitamins and minerals. 2. Soup If you are suffering from severe nausea and vomiting, sip small amounts of bouillon-like soup broth throughout the day. Take about two ounces of the soup every 30 to 60 minutes. The soup helps in restoring the hydration and electrolyte balance of the body. 3. Milk And Dairy Low fat milk and dairy are usually well-tolerated by people with gastroparesis. Fat-free or low fat milk, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese and buttermilk are good sources of protein. However, whole fat milk, cream, cream cheese and yogurt with fruits and nuts should be avoided. 4. Animal Protein People with gastroparesis can take ground meat, fish and eggs. Avoid the fatty portions of the meat. However, animal protein is more suitable for breakfast and lunch. Do not take more than two ounces of animal protein for dinner. This helps in improving the fasting blood sugar level in diabetics with gastroparesis. 5. Vegetables In case of mild gastroparesis, low-fiber vegetables can be added to the diet. Finely shredded raw carrot, peeled and deseeded cucumber, and well-cooked, soft and pureed carrots, cauliflower, beets, squash, sweet potato and peas can be eaten when the symptoms of gastroparesis are mild. They were pointing to a study by Dr. Mercedes G. López, a researcher at the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados in Guanajuato, Mexico. The 2014 study discussed the effect of a natural sweetener from guava plant to aid in weight loss and reduce blood glucose levels. Known as agavins, the plant-based sweeteners slow the stomach from emptying, boosting insulin production. I was discouraged by everyone including my wife who is a physician regarding this recipe. The reason was the argument that it is so simple then why it is not used by anyone and how come the Diabetes drug industry is flourishing world wide. Even on internet at one place it showed it is not proven as there is no control study. I think we have become so used to the system that we are afraid to try even simple things unless someone advises us and charges us a lot of money for the advice. So I decided to take matter in my own hand and started to try it. It worked so well for me that I feel others should try it and spread the word so it can help everyone. I have been using it for two weeks and are already seeing the effect as I measure my blood sugar many times a day. I stopped my insulin but I am taking other medicines prescribed by the doctor but will gradually wean them out or reduce them as it is warranted. I did find a writeup supporting Okra with details, but it is so easy to try with no side effect that one should try oneself. here is the write up I found that goes in details of how it works. Okra is fast gaining a reputation as a so-called 'superfood' for people with or at risk of diabetes or cancer. Commonly referred to as ladyfingers, or by its biological names Abelmoschus esculentus and Hibiscus esculentus, okra is known to have a positive effect on blood sugar control, among many other health benefits. What is okra? Okra is a tall-growing vegetable that traces its origin from ancient Ethiopia (Abyssinia) through to Eastern Mediterranean, India, the Americas and the Caribbean. Parts of the plant (immature okra pods) are widely used vegetables in tropical countries and are typically used for making soups, stews or as a fried/boiled vegetable. These tender pods are very low in calories, providing just 30 calories per 100 g, and contain no saturated fats or cholesterol. They are also rich in nutrients, completely non-toxic, and have no adverse side effects. How can it help treat diabetes? Evidence of okra having anti-diabetic properties has increased in recent years, with multiple Vitro (laboratory) and Vivo (animal) studies confirming okra as a potent blood glucose-lowering (or anti-diabetic) food. In one study, published 2011 in the Journal of Pharmacy & BioAllied Sciences, researchers in India found that diabetic mice fed dried and ground okra peels and seeds experienced a reduction in their blood glucose levels, while others showed a gradual decrease in blood glucose following regular feeding of okra extract for about ten days. Outside of scientific research, many people with diabetes have reported decreasing blood sugar levels after soaking cut-up okra pieces in water overnight and then drinking the juice in the morning, while in Turkey roasted okra seeds have been used as a traditional diabetes medicine for generations. What's behind this effect? The superior insoluble fibre contained in okra is believed to help stabilise blood glucose by slowing the rate at which sugar is absorbed from the intestinal tract. Other health benefits Because okra is a rich source of dietary fibre, important vitamins and minerals, and powerful antioxidants, the vegetable is known to be beneficial for health in a number of ways.
