Eating White Rice Increases Risk of Diabetes

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health in Massachusetts have released a report about rice. It shows that eating white rice increases the risk of Type Two diabetes. However, eating brown rice reduces the risk of the disease. The World Health Organization says more than two hundred twenty million people worldwide have diabetes. Type Two diabetes results when the body cannot effectively use the sugar it produces. More than thirty-nine thousand men and one hundred fifty-seven thousand women took part in the study. They were asked about their diet and day-to-day activities, as well as any pre-existing diseases. The study found that the people who ate five or more servings of white rice per week had a seventeen percent increased risk of developing Type Two diabetes. But those who ate two or more servings of brown rice a week had an eleven percent reduced risk of getting the disease. Brown rice is the grain in its natural form. White rice results after it has been refined. This involves removing the outer cover, including the husk, bran and germ. Only the inner white kernel is left. White rice is often enriched to replace some nutrients lost during the refining process. Qi Sun is the lead writer of the report. He says the outer parts of brown rice slow down the work of the body's digestive enzymes on the starch in the rice. This means that the release of sugar into the bloodstream is slower after eating brown rice compared to white rice.A diet of foods that quickly release sugar into the bloodstream has been linked with a greater risk of Type Two diabetes. The exact reason for this is not known. Doctor Sun says less refined grains have more nutritional value than refined grains. He says replacing white rice with whole grains like whole wheat or barley could result in a thirty-six percent lower chance of developing Type Two diabetes. He says people should replace white rice and other refined carbohydrates with whole grains whenever possible. However, brown rice does not last as long as white rice because of the oil-rich layer of bran. This makes it less usable in poor communities. The International Rice Research Institute is working to develop kinds of white rice whose starch is released more slowly. And that's the VOA Special English Health Report. Fibre Helps Control Blood Sugar And Diabetes

This is just a short presentation to give some information about fibre and how it helps diabetics. There are two ways to spell the word; fibre and fiber and doesn't matter because they have the same meaning. Fibre is the part of plants that our bodies cannot digest. There are two types of fibre: soluble and insoluble. Foods such as vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains contain fibre. Animal foods such as meats and eggs have no fibre. What is the difference between soluble and insoluble fibre? Soluble fibre is the soft fibre that helps control blood glucose (sugar) and reduces cholesterol. It also helps in managing diarrhea. Soluble fibre is present in oat bran, oatmeal, legumes (dried beans and lentils) and fruits such as apples and strawberries. Insoluble fibre is the bulky fibre that helps to prevent constipation. It also helps to prevent some types of cancers. It is present in wheat bran, whole grain breads and cereals, fruits and vegetables. Many foods contain both soluble and insoluble fibre. Why is fibre good for me? Fibre is important for your overall health. Some of its benefits include: Controlling blood glucose (sugar) Managing blood pressure Reducing blood cholesterol Increasing the feeling of being full Controling weight Regulating bowel movement Benefit for those with diabetes Soluble fibre in oat bran, legumes (dried beans of all kinds, peas and lentils), and pectin (from fruit, such as apples) and forms in root vegetables (such as carrots) is considered especially helpful for people with either form of diabetes. Soluble fibre may help control blood sugar by delaying gastric (stomach) emptying, retarding the entry of glucose into the bloodstream and lessening the postprandial (post-meal) rise in blood sugar. It may lessen insulin requirements in those with type 1 diabetes. Because fibre slows the digestion of foods, it can help blunt the sudden spikes in blood glucose (sugar) that may occur after a low-fibre meal. Such blood sugar peaks stimulate the pancreas to pump out more insulin. Some researchers believe that a lifetime of blood glucose (sugar) spikes could contribute to type 2 diabetes, which typically strikes after the age of 40, and more than doubles the risk of stroke and heart disease. The cholesterol-lowering effect of soluble fibres may also help those with diabetes by reducing heart disease risks. How much fibre do I need? For adults the Canadian Diabetes Association recommends 25 to 50 grams of fibre every day. Children between the ages of three and 18 need a gradual increase of fibre in their diets, usually calculated by using the child’s age and adding five grams. People of all ages should eat a variety of foods to obtain a mixture of both soluble and insoluble fibre. How can I get enough? Good foods with at least two grams of fibre per serving can claim to be a “source” of fibre. Better foods with at least four grams of fibre per serving can claim to be a “good source” of fibre. Best foods with at least six grams of fibre per serving can claim to be a “very good” or “excellent” source of fibre. Here are some tips to increase your fibre intake: Eat the skins and seeds of vegetables and fruit Choose “whole grain” bread, pasta, cereal, crackers and rice Use whole grain flour in your homemade baked goods Add barley, beans and lentils to soups and salads Use canned beans, chickpeas in salads or in place of meat a few times every week Add ground flax seeds to yogurt, cereal or homemade baked goods Add a small handful of almonds or other nuts to a salad Note: Increase the amount of fibre slowly and drink plenty of fluids to avoid discomfort and gas. It also helps maintain balance and the right proportions of fat in the blood and helps lower your chances of developing blood clots and blocked arteries. However, science also reveals that more than two drinks of alcohol a day can harm the heart. How?... Large amounts of alcohol can affect how the heart works. If the heart isn’t pumping blood throughout your body effectively, other organs may suffer from lack of oxygen or nutrients. If the person drinking has clogged blood vessels, the heart has to work even harder. Studies1 on middle-aged and older people resulted in linking binge drinking to a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases like stroke, sudden cardiac death, and heart attack. Binge drinking may also lead to hardening of your arteries, which further increases your risk of cardiovascular disease. Obviously, binge drinking should be avoided in order to have a healthy blood circulation. Typically, binge drinking happens in groups. So try to limit the time you spend with your friends who tend to be binge drinkers. 2 -- Sitting For Too Long, Especially With Bad Posture While a brief period of sitting here and there is natural, long periods of sitting day-in and day-out can seriously impact your health and shorten your life. Excessive sitting is bad for your back and is one of the causes of poor circulation. Unfortunately, most of us are sitting even more than ever because of computers. And with prolonged sitting, comes negative damages to your organs The Heart – In a sitting position, blood flow slows down and muscles don’t burn enough fat, which permits fatty acids to clog in the heart much faster. The Pancreas – The body’s ability to properly respond to insulin is badly affected by just one day of prolonged sitting. This leads the pancreas to produce more insulin, and this cause low energy, fat again and diabetes. Colon Cancer – Excessive sitting may increase your risk of colon, breast, and endometrial cancers. So, how can you avoid sitting for too long? Set an alarm on your computer, watch or phone and stand up every 30-60 minutes. Move around, stretch, grab a glass of water or do something physical. If possible, go outside for a quick 10 minute walk. Instead of sitting and talking on your cell phone, walk around. There are no cords, so you have no limits. 3 -- High Intake Of Salt A high intake of sodium is a more common cause of poor circulation. For clarity, I’m referring to regular table salt or salt found in most packaged foods. Not so much with more “natural” salts such as Himalayan or Celtic Sea Salt Sodium is a mineral and electrolyte that’s crucial for your body to function well. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention2, around 90% of sodium you get comes from salt. Sodium assists in controlling blood volume and blood pressure. However, your circulatory health may suffer if you get too much of it. A high sodium diet is linked to hypertension. According to the CDC, if sodium rises, blood pressure rises too. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 recommends you limit salt intake to less than 2,300 milligrams/day. You should not consume more than 1,500 milligrams daily if you’re over the age of 50, African-American, or have health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease. Processed foods and restaurant foods are full of salt. Don’t eat these foods and you’ll be able to avoid the majority of your salt intake. Diabetes and Okra - a case study by Jogindra Kohli 8 14 2015
I was discouraged by everyone including my wife who is a physician regarding this recipe. The reason was the argument that it is so simple then why it is not used by anyone and how come the Diabetes drug industry is flourishing world wide. Even on internet at one place it showed it is not proven as there is no control study. I think we have become so used to the system that we are afraid to try even simple things unless someone advises us and charges us a lot of money for the advice. So I decided to take matter in my own hand and started to try it. It worked so well for me that I feel others should try it and spread the word so it can help everyone. I have been using it for two weeks and are already seeing the effect as I measure my blood sugar many times a day. I stopped my insulin but I am taking other medicines prescribed by the doctor but will gradually wean them out or reduce them as it is warranted. I did find a writeup supporting Okra with details, but it is so easy to try with no side effect that one should try oneself. here is the write up I found that goes in details of how it works. Okra is fast gaining a reputation as a so-called 'superfood' for people with or at risk of diabetes or cancer. Commonly referred to as ladyfingers, or by its biological names Abelmoschus esculentus and Hibiscus esculentus, okra is known to have a positive effect on blood sugar control, among many other health benefits. What is okra? Okra is a tall-growing vegetable that traces its origin from ancient Ethiopia (Abyssinia) through to Eastern Mediterranean, India, the Americas and the Caribbean. Parts of the plant (immature okra pods) are widely used vegetables in tropical countries and are typically used for making soups, stews or as a fried/boiled vegetable. These tender pods are very low in calories, providing just 30 calories per 100 g, and contain no saturated fats or cholesterol. They are also rich in nutrients, completely non-toxic, and have no adverse side effects. How can it help treat diabetes? Evidence of okra having anti-diabetic properties has increased in recent years, with multiple Vitro (laboratory) and Vivo (animal) studies confirming okra as a potent blood glucose-lowering (or anti-diabetic) food. In one study, published 2011 in the Journal of Pharmacy & BioAllied Sciences, researchers in India found that diabetic mice fed dried and ground okra peels and seeds experienced a reduction in their blood glucose levels, while others showed a gradual decrease in blood glucose following regular feeding of okra extract for about ten days. Outside of scientific research, many people with diabetes have reported decreasing blood sugar levels after soaking cut-up okra pieces in water overnight and then drinking the juice in the morning, while in Turkey roasted okra seeds have been used as a traditional diabetes medicine for generations. What's behind this effect? The superior insoluble fibre contained in okra is believed to help stabilise blood glucose by slowing the rate at which sugar is absorbed from the intestinal tract. Other health benefits Because okra is a rich source of dietary fibre, important vitamins and minerals, and powerful antioxidants, the vegetable is known to be beneficial for health in a number of ways. These include: • Preventing and improving constipation • Lowering cholesterol • Reducing the risk of some forms of cancer, especially colorectal cancer • Improving energy levels and improving symptoms of depression • Helping to treat sore throat, irritable bowel, ulcers and lung inflammation

How do we consistently rank so well while the rest of the developed world struggles with obesity? Well, part of the reason why we have a low obesity rate is because we eat foods with slow calories. So, what are slow calories? Recently, the newly established Association of Slow Calorie Research for Health has promoted the importance of “slow calories.” Slow calories refer to food that slows the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates in your intestines. In fact, quick digestion of food increases your risk for diabetes and weight gain. In the past, people believed that the faster you digested your food, the better. Yet, recent studies show that quick digestion and absorption of carbohydrates causes your insulin to spike, which can lead to weight gain. So, what foods have slow calories and what are some other tricks that we make foods slow calories? 1. Foods with Slow Calories Colored carbs, such as brown rice or brown bread, contain fiber which slows down digestion. When you have a choice, always opt for colored carbs. 2. 1) Vegetables 2) Protein 3) Carbs Eating order matters. When you eat carbs at the beginning of a meal, you cause your insulin to spike. Always eat your vegetables first, protein second, and carbs last. By doing so, your carbs are covered by vegetable fibers. Since they are coated in vegetable fibers, your body digests and absorbs your carbs slower. Now, I’m not saying you should finish all your vegetables before moving onto protein and carbs. You can just repeat this cycle as you eat. The most important thing is to eat some vegetables before eating other food. If there is soup, you should enjoy it a little bit before you eat your vegetables. 3. Chew More When you eat too fast, you tend to eat more because it takes time for your brain to recognize that you’re full. By chewing more, you can prevent overeating. In Japan, we are taught to chew 30 times per bite at school. It’s very hard to chew that many times (and I’ve never been able to do so), but at least try to chew more.

But is all fiber created equal? There is soluble fiber, like oatmeal, and insoluble fiber, like the cellulose in veggies. In classic western form, we are told that if you want to lose weight, lower cholesterol, or reduce the risk of diabetes, eat more soluble fiber, such as "heart-healthy" Cheerios. On the other hand, if you are constipated, feeling toxic, overeating, or at risk of colon cancer, we are told to eat more insoluble fiber in the form of vegetable roughage to boost intestinal bulk. While everyone agrees that both are necessary, and that each plays a unique role in maintaining optimal health, we are being told to emphasize one fiber over another based on symptoms, rather than the indisputable logic of nature. Join me as I help you simplify and clarify your fiber needs, and set a nutritional course based on nature's intelligence. ________________________________________________________________________ Let's Review There are two types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Neither of them is digestible by humans and, thus, they offer no real nutritional value. However, both kinds of fiber perform certain functions in the intestinal tract that makes them absolutely necessary for optimal health. Soluble Fiber Soluble fiber is soluble in water. It becomes slimy and lubricating in the gut when it mixes with water in the digestive system. Think of psyllium or Metamucil. Food Sources Soluble fiber is found in oat bran, barley, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, peas and some fruits and veggies. Function • Binds with fatty acids and bile in the gut, which are generally attached to bad cholesterol and toxins earmarked for the toilet. • Becomes gel-like in the gut and slows the absorptions of fats and sugars into the blood stream. Benefits • Lowers total cholesterol and LDL or bad cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. • Regulates or slows the blood sugar release from the gut for people with diabetes. Risks • Too much soluble fiber can dehydrate the gut. Have you ever added water to psyllium in a glass? Being a soluble fiber, it will attract water and expand quickly in the glass. If too much soluble fiber is taken, it may pull water away from the gut wall, drying it out. • The expansive effect of soluble fiber can also overly distend the gut. This could cause chronic constipation, a distended bowel, and sluggish absorption of certain nutrients such as sugars and fats into the blood stream. Insoluble Fiber Insoluble fiber does not mix with water and generally moves through the gut intact, acting as bulk and scrubbing the intestinal wall. Think of vegetable roughage. Food Sources Insoluble fiber is found in wheat bran, fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Function • Insoluble fiber tends to speed up the passage of food through the stomach and intestines, adding needed bulk to the stool. • It is also in charge of maintaining the proper pH of the gut, which regulates the balance of good bacteria in the gut. Benefits • Promotes regular bowel movement and prevents constipation • Removes toxic waste through the colon in less time. • Scrubs the villi of the intestines. • Helps prevent colon cancer by keeping an optimal pH in the intestines to prevent microbes from producing cancerous and toxic substances. Risks • Too much insoluble fiber can irritate the gut as excess roughage can inflame a sensitive digestive system. A Symbiotic Relationship While most nutritionists give soluble fibers most of the credit for cardiovascular support, blood sugar regulation and lowering cholesterol, much of these benefits would not exist without the aid of insoluble fibers. Insoluble fibers in the form of cellulose escort the toxins into the toilet. If only soluble fibers existed, toxins might be bound to soluble fibers in the gut with no way out, lingering in the gut and eventually being re-absorbed back into the bloodstream and liver.
