On 23rd March 1980 and again on 6th July of that year, the popular television program 60 Minutes reported on DMSO. In a segment entitled "The Riddle of DMSO", presenter Mike Wallace covered the anecdotal patient history of the solvent. The 60 Minutes broadcast reached the homes of 70 million viewers Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is an organosulfur compound with the formula (CH3)2SO. This colorless liquid penetrates the skin very readily, giving it the unusual property for many individuals of being secreted onto the surface of the tongue after contact with the skin and causing a garlic-like taste in the mouth. Studies show that DMSO can decrease inflammation, pain and swelling. People can spray or rub DMSO to the skin in affected areas. Many people already do this on themselves or pets. DMSO may decrease pain in people with shingles. From personal use of DMSO mixed with water I have seen it fade away scars that have been on the skin for a long period of time. This includes 3 month old scars from shingles and 20 year old acne scars. When applied to the back and shoulders I have noticed my muscles feeling a lot more supple. In use with people in their 70's I have seen it make huge differences to people's joint pains. In particular in their knee's and hips. In some cases the person has noticed a difference in their joints within 24 hours. Most people with joint pains are simply given medication that relieves pain but does nothing to help heal the condition that causes the pain in the first place. DMSO actually appears to help in the healing process. The best results we've seen so far are a mix of 70% DMSO and 30% water. It is very important DMSO is only used on totally clean skin as it will draw into the body whatever is on the surface of the skin. So best to use after you have had a bath or shower and making sure no other chemicals are on the skin. This video was edited down from it's original length of over 15 minutes spanning 3 videos. You’d be pretty unhappy right? I mean - it would be hard to breathe, move or do ANYTHING well. If you’re walking around right now feeling achy, heavy, like a lead weight, OR if you’re in pain or recovering from an injury, then chances are your fascia - the connective tissue webbing that wraps everything in our bodies - is dehydrated, stuck to itself in knots and too small for you to move and live efficiently; not unlike how YOU would feel if your clothes suddenly shrunk. What the heck is fascia? Fascia wraps every nerve ending in the body, every muscle fibril, muscle fiber and muscle bundle and all that fascia turns into your tendons and ligaments; it wraps our bones and our organs…it’s EVERYWHERE. Fascia is crucial for proper nerve communication, and because of its close relationship to the nervous system - fascia takes on the PHYSICAL SHAPE of our EMOTIONS, SENSATIONS and SUBCONSCIOUS feelings and patterns. This means we can re-wire the brain by changing the fascia, which requires recruiting the nervous system and clearing out of our past traumas, memories, tension and anything that got stuck in our bodies on even an emotional level but certainly physical. We’re all born with fluid, healthy, supple fascia. This is why kids can fall so much, get injured and recover so fast (and that’s why we all ignore our bodies as we enter adulthood, until we get smacked in the head with pain, amiright?!) When we’re kids, we’re SHAPING our soft tissue with our physical, mental and emotional habits. Those myelin sheaths are getting laid down and our fascial system is getting molded by the way we sit, stand, run and what we think and feel on a daily basis. As we age - everything from overuse, underuse, trauma, stress, anxiety etc can creates a BUILD UP of tension within the fascial system that accumulates and eventually - this tension creates DYSFUNCTION. When fascia is supple, fluid and elastic it acts like a giant spring, or SHOCK ABSORBER for our entire body. We SHOULD be able to jump, run, and do whatever we want and feel light and buoyant as we do. Healthy fascia won’t hurt AT ALL when compression is applied. For example, I could put my FULL body weight on your IT BAND and it would not hurt. I pinky swear. Unhealthy fascia HURTS when compression is applied, to varying degrees. If you get on a foam roller or someone steps on you, like me, and it hurts? That means the fascia is unhealthy. What does fascia NEED to get or stay healthy? SPACE. And nutrient rich blood. Space allows blood to flow. Blood nourishes every cell in our body, so our fascia, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, organs etc stay healthy. Fascia needs to be hydrated to allow our muscle fibers to GLIDE like they need to when we ask our bodies to move. When we build up fascial adhesions or restriction, these knots and areas of density can stop blood from flowing, irritate a joint that’s no longer getting fresh blood to renew the bursa, pull on bones or joints, compress nerves and cause all kinds of pain and alignment issues. Most pain in the body can be significantly relieved and often completely eliminated in as little as a few minutes with the right methods, and even decades of pain can be reversed in a matter of several hours or weeks by looking to the fascial and nervous systems to create change from the inside out. You can use a belt or dog leash to help you slide your foot towards you. You can do this 10 to 15 times with a little pause at the end stretch. Next you want to move your kneecap, or patella around. This is important because your patella is attached to your quadriceps tendon and your patellar tendon. When those are tight, it is hard to bend your knee. Your leg needs to be straight and relaxed. You can push the patella up and down, superior and inferior, and side-to-side, medial and lateral. You can do this for 2 to 3 minutes. Now you are going to stretch your calf muscle, or gastrocnemius muscle. Keep your leg straight, and take the belt or leash and place it on the ball of your foot. Relax your leg and then pull your foot towards you. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, 3 times. Next is a hamstring stretch. There are many ways to stretch them, and you can check out the hamstring stretches video for other ways to stretch them. The most important part of this stretch is to keep your back straight. Many people try to curl their backs to be able to touch their toes. Your hamstrings are attached to what is called the ischial tuberosity, or your butt bone. So if you bend at your back, you are not going to get a good hamstring stretch. Try to bend at your hips. The last stretch will be on your stomach, or in prone. This will stretch your quadriceps muscle. Take a belt or dog leash and wrap around your foot/ankle. Take the strap and gently pull your foot towards your buttocks until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and do it 3 times. The Worst Way to Fix Sciatica (DO THIS INSTEAD!)

The reason why this is so common is that we do too many things that put us in position to suffer from sciatica in the first place, and then we don’t know how to fix sciatica once we have it. In this video, I’m going to show you why foam rolling and smashing the piriformis muscle with a lacrosse ball is the worst thing you can do to fix sciatica. To start, it is important to differentiate true sciatic nerve pain from something that looks like sciatic nerve pain. If the source of your pain is from a bulging or herniated lumbar disk, then the stretches shown in this video are not going to fix your problem. In fact, you will want to make an appointment to be seen by a licensed physical therapist to help you treat your disc herniation another way. On the other hand, if your sciatic nerve like symptoms are arising from the compression of the sciatic nerve from a tight piriformis, then you will want to pay close attention to what I am showing you here. Firstly, the nerve itself can get compressed by having a tight piriformis muscle. Because this muscle lies directly over the nerve as it exists the pelvis, there is a tendency for this muscle to compress the structure when it is tight. Lately, we have been told by many that the best way to fix a tight muscle is to not stretch it but rather foam roll it or use a lacrosse ball on it to smash it. In this case, that is the worst advice you can be given. The lack of tissue thickness in this region (made worse by having weak or underdeveloped glutes) leads to a high probability that while attempting to ease the tension in the piriformis that you will be further compressing the nerve itself and causing more pain. Even a foam roller does not adequately fix this problem since you will still be compressing the area, albeit with the force dispersed a little bit more evenly across the muscle than with the lacrosse ball. Either way, the treatment approach is not correct. The best way to fix your sciatic nerve pain is to gently stretch the piriformis, but to make sure and do it consistently! 3-4 times per day for 5-6 days a week is a great start. Hold each stretch for 45 seconds to a minutes and make sure not to round your lower back in order to keep the focus on your hips. Place the tight hip in front of you with your knee and hip bent to 90 degrees and lean forward without losing the slight arch in your lower back. You should feel an incredible relief without ever having to start cranking on the stretch or bearing through much discomfort when doing. Hand arthritis is pretty common, and it can be very debilitating. Since the joints in the hand are small, you don’t have to do much to relieve the pain, you just have to keep them moving. These stretches and exercises should help your hand arthritis feel better. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: http://www.askdoctorjo.com/hand-arthritis You can set your arm on a table or flat surface to relax it, or if you don’t have anything available, you can prop your elbow up on your knee or thigh. Start off with a fist and warm up your wrist. With your palm side facing down, move your fist up and down at the wrist for flexion and extension. Now move it side to side in a radial and ulnar deviation movement. Ten in each direction should be fine since this is just to warm up the muscles. Next, you will keep your fingers straight, and take your thumb and touch each finger in the middle of your hand, and then spread them all back apart. You can do three times back and forth. Now bend your fingers at the joint closest to your wrist, still keeping the fingers as straight as you can. Bend down and back up gliding the tendons up and down. Now move to the next joint down the fingers. This time open your fingers, and then curl the top part of your fingers down for the stretch. Finally, go to the last joint farthest down the finger. You might have to hold onto the near part of your finger so just the last joint moves. Just start off with ten of each of these with a continuous movement. For the last stretch, start with all your fingers close together, and then spread them out as far as you can, just like you are fanning them out. You don’t have to do a lot of these exercises since these are small joints. 2-3 minutes, 2-3 times a day should be plenty. Exercise can keep your knees healthy by strengthening the muscles surrounding the joints. Warning Always consult a physician before attempting any exercise plan. Step 1: Strengthen quadriceps Do quadriceps exercises. Strong quads make for strong knees. Sit in a chair, back straight, and place a rolled towel under your knees. Step 2: Lift leg to horizontal position Slowly lift one leg until it is horizontal to the ground, hold it for three seconds, and then slowly return the leg to the beginning position. Repeat with your opposite leg, working up to three sets of 12 to 15 repetitions. Tip Joint supplements like glucosamine can help keep your joints supple. Step 3: Perform quad leg lifts Perform quad leg lifts by lying flat on your back on the floor. Bend one knee to a 90-degree angle. Step 4: Lift straight leg Lift the straight leg slowly until it is parallel with the bent knee, hold it for three seconds, then slowly return it to the floor. Perform this 10 times, and then repeat with your opposite leg, working up to 10 repetitions. Tip Do not exercise the same muscle groups two days in a row. Step 5: Perform quad squats Perform 12 to 15 quad squats by slowly squatting, keeping your knees at a wider than 90 degree angle. It was terribly painful and it began more than a decade of constant knee trouble. I’d like to share some of the “secrets” of that rehabilitation program with you now. Because of how your body is designed, these secrets will work with any kind of joint pain, from your ankles to your neck. Secret #1: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate Nothing you do affects the inside of your body…as much as what you put inside of it. And when it comes to your joints, that’s particularly true for what you drink. When we’re young, our joints are up to 85% water. Water is also an important component of synovial fluid, which lubricates and cushions your joints. As we get older, our joints tend to contain less and less water. They’re dryer and they don’t glide as well as they used to. What should you drink? Water. And more water. I don’t buy that expensive bottled water. I just draw it straight from the tap into a pitcher. Herbal tea: spice blends as a pick-me-up, chamomile for its mild, pleasant flavor and calming properties before bed. Be careful with coffee and black tea. There is very strong evidence that coffee has great health benefits, including reducing the risk of gout in women and men. However, caffeine itself can pull minerals from your body and aggravate joint pain. Decaf coffee and green tea are both excellent. I didn’t do it, I thought spending so much time stretching was a waste… and it would have saved me years of pain and possibly enabled me to retire on my own terms. So I stretch now. Every.single.day. And like most people, I do just fine with 2 or 3 20-to-30 second stretches. That’s because, when we’re young, we’re supple and limber and active. As we get older, we become less active and our muscles get tighter and shorter, pulling our joints together so they grind against each other. Stretching stops and can reverse that tightening. Stretching and warming activity are two of the three parts of the rehab program I created for myself to return to the NBA. I follow this rehab program to this very day. As long as I do it—despite being 7 feet tall, active, and having no cartilage between my knees, I am pain free. My rehab routine takes about 20 minutes and while it varies from person to person, that seems to be pretty normal. Today I am here to talk to you about massage for dog arthritis. I get questions all the time "Dr. Smith, how can I help my dog at home with arthritis?" What can I do to alleviate his pain?" Besides giving a medication that I instruct and tell people to use, and following the techniques I tell people to use, another thing you can do is massage your dog. Today Becki and I are going to teach you and show you some tips on the best way to alleviate your dog's pain through massage. All right, meet Stella. Stella is not the prototype that you will be performing the massage on, because Stella is a young dog. However, she is very laid back and she's a great dog to illustrate our point of how to massage your dog. The first place we are going to focus on is the stifle. The stifle is otherwise known as the knee in the dog. You can see Becki's hands, she's right in the area of the stifle. The stifle is a common place for arthritis because of cranial cruciate rupture or ACL tears in the dog. Becki is performing a variety of techniques. She is using her fingers to massage the muscles and joints, and now she is using her knuckles to apply pressure over a wider area. She can also use her palm, and Becki can also take that joint through it's full range of motion by flexing and extending the area. Now occasionally, kind of like Stella--she doesn't like that--and that's OK. So what we do in those situations is that we take the joint right to the point where it hurts and we hold it there. Hold it for 10 seconds, and let it sit there. What that does is breaks down a lot of the adhesions that form, either from a surgery, from arthritis, from trauma to the leg, or from any other reason that the leg is not utilized and used and extended and flexed through its full range of motion. So that is the stifle region. The next region we are going to go to is the hip. The hip is a unique joint in the dog. Becki, show us where the hip is. OK, there's the hip, right in that area. The hip is the place where the femur,which is the long bone of your thigh, attaches to the pelvis). This is kind of a socket joint, where there is a ball that sits in a socket, kind of like where a light bulb sits in a light fixture. And so there's a couple of different ways to massage this joint. As you'll see Becki doing right now, she is actually using her fingers to massage the whole area of the hip. See it going around and around and around. She's also using her palm to apply pressure evenly over the area. The hip is unique because it's a joint that moves in 360 degrees. She's now taking that hip through it's full range of motion, and every once in a while this will cause dogs... they'll resent this. Especially an older dog that has hip arthritis. But this is good because it keeps the muscle supple, it keeps the muscles going through their range of motion, and it helps to strengthen the muscles and ultimately alleviate pain. Now she can do that in that direction, or she can take it and do it in the other direction. She can also do it by flexing it and extending the stifle at the same time. Now this is a little bit more vigorous exercise and can cause more pain or objection, but it's a good exercise to keep that leg rolling and to keep that leg moving, and to hopefully eliminate pain through massage. The next area we are going to move on to is the back. Becki, can you show us where the back is? The back, if you feel down the center of your dog's back, you will feel some small, little protuberances or little points, and those are the dorsal spinus process of the vertebral bodies. On each side of those little points are two muscles, and lots of times those muscles will get tight, they'll get painful they'll get inflamed when a dog has back arthritis. So we can actually massage those two areas, and right now Becki is running down the length of those two muscles, putting pressure--about as much pressure you would put if you were trying to draw a line in the sand, let's say, with your fingers.
