The mental symptoms include memory loss, depression, or obsessive compulsive disorder. Vitamin B12 Is Essential For Your Nerves And Genes Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is one of the 8 essential B vitamins. As it is water soluble, your body cannot store it; so, it needs to be constantly sourced through food. All B vitamins help produce energy in the body by converting carbohydrates from the food into fuel (glucose) and use fat and protein optimally Signs And Symptoms Of Vitamin B12 Deficiency As an adult, you need only 2.4 mcg vitamin B12 daily through your diet. For infants below 1 year, the daily requirement ranges from 0.4 to 0.5 mcg. Pregnant and lactating mothers require 2.6 and 2.8 mcg, respectively. The only source of vitamin B12 are foods, mostly from animal sources, and supplements. While vegetarians can get it from dairy products, they still risk not getting enough. However, vegans have a high risk of vitamin B12 deficiency if they do not eat B12-fortified foods and supplements. Deficiency occurs either when you don’t get enough of it through your diet or when your body cannot absorb it effectively. Your body stores an extra supply of it, so it can take up to 2 years for any vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms to creep up on you. You risk permanent damage to your nervous system and brain if you let this one get too far though, so be on the lookout for those symptoms. Early Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms: Unusual fatigue Faulty digestion No appetite Nausea Loss of menstruation Tingling hands and feet (start of serious deficiency) If you don't get levels back up from there, it can result in permanent nerve damage and get very serious, causing blindness or deafness. Also, homocysteine levels will be high (risk factor for heart disease, stroke and complications during pregnancy) long before any of the early vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms show up. If children don't get enough B12 during childhood, their levels can be corrected but the period where they didn't have enough can have permanent effects on their brain and nerve functions. Maintaining your own B12 levels while breastfeeding is crucial. You can be tested for B12 deficiency by your doctor, and the most accurate method of testing is a urine or blood test called a Methylmalonic Acid test (MMA). It can detect deficiency much earlier and much more accurately than the standard blood test most doctors use to test for serum cobalamin levels and pernicious anemia. If you're seeing vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms, or show low levels in a blood test, the obvious solution is to raise B12 levels. Going to be talking today about some of my favorite vitamin b12 foods that I recommend for people. Obviously you can use b12 and correct your deficiencies using b12 supplements, they're very easy to find. I recommend going with vitamin b12 methylcobalamin since it's the most absorbable. You can also find it in a vitamin b complex. In 3 ounces of this first food, you can get 3375% of the RDA of vitamin b12. By consuming this on a regular basis you can avoid vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms. 1. Liver: beef or chicken. Make sure you get a high quality source, don't buy the bottom shelf liver. Just 3oz has 81mg of b12 which is over 3000% the RDA. 2. Salmon: per filet of salmon has about 20mg of b-12 which is over 800% the RDA. Trout, sardines, herring all have a good amount of b12. 3. Turkey: has 3oz 1mg of b12. 4. Raw milk: raw milk contains 1mg of b12 per cup. 5. Beef tenderloin has the RDA of b12 in it. 6. Lamb is about the same as steak So there you have it. Those are some very rich vitamin b12 foods you can eat regularly to get more b12. For vegetarians and vegans, the main issue is that b12 is going to come from meat.
