Divalproex Medication Information (dosing, side effects, patient counseling)

02:59
Your medication Divalproex Divalproex sodium is also known by the brand name: Depakote, Depakote ER and Depakote Sprinkle capsules. Divalproex sodium comes in 125, 250, and 500 mg tablets, 250 and 500mg extended release tablets, and 125mg sprinkle capsule. Divalproex sodium is most commonly used to treat seizures, bipolar problems, and prevent migraine headaches. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, divalproex sodium is taken by mouth with or without food 1 to 4 times a day. If upset stomach occurs, take divalproex sodium with food. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. For best results take each dose at the same time each day. Extended-release tablets must be swallowed whole, do not split or break tablets. Divalproex Sprinkle capsules may be swallowed whole or the capsule may be opened and sprinkled on small amount (1 teaspoonful) of soft food like pudding, or applesauce. This is to be used immediately (do not store or chew). Some common side effects with divalproex sodium include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tiredness, weakness, tremor, dizziness, blurry eye sight, and loss of hunger. Some less common side effects include swelling of the arms or legs, high or low blood pressure, weight gain, and constipation. Do not take divalproex sodium if: you are pregnant, have liver problems or under the age of 2 years. This medication should not be abruptly discontinued because of the possibility of increasing seizure frequency. While taking divalproex sodium, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if: • You have signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, tightness of the chest, etc.) • You have dark urine, are feeling tired, are not hungry, have an upset stomach, are throwing up, or have yellowing of the skin or eyes. • Are pregnant as this drug may cause very bad birth defects. If you are or become pregnant and take this drug for seizures or bipolar disorder, talk to your doctor to see if you need to keep taking this drug. All forms of divalproex sodium including the liquid needs to be stored at room temperature in a dry place away from children or pets.

Headache Clinical Resarch: Why would I want to participate? How do I find one?

12:38
Doctor Krob's Headache Vlog is for information and demonstration purposes only. It is not medical advice. If you need medical advice, please see your doctor. Doctor Krob answers two common questions: "Why would I want to participate in headache clinical research?" and "I am a person living with a headache diagnosis. How do I find the right clinical research study to participate in?" The answers to "Why participate in headache clinical reasearch?" include: Most people living with a headache diagnosis come to realize that (especially compared to other non-headache diagnoses) there are few treatment options for people living with headache. Many of these are surrogate treatments. They were originally developed for other diagnoses, and "accidentally" found to be of some use for people with headache. Like hand-me-down clothes, though, they don't quite fit the diagnosis, so it's not surprising that they don't work as well or feel as "right" as purpose-made treatments. Take the example of treatments for chronic migraine. There are 3 or 4 platform treatments (with a vew nearly-identical variations). Beta blockers, like propranolol, originially for people with high blood pressure. Seizure drugs, like topiramate and divalproex (Depakote). And amitriptylin, originallly for depression. Even Botox was originally made for cosmetic use and only accidentally found to work for chronic migraine. A few months ago, Aimovig, the very first treatment tailor made for chronic migraine, came to market. And that was the result of years and years of clinical research. Clinical research needs people living with a certain diagnosis to volunteer. So the two main reaons to think about participating in clinical research include: Helping yourself by possibly getting access to new, tailor made, headache treatments; and, helping other people with headache by making clinical research possible. Some people recognize that being part of most clinical research studies involves a chance that they could be in the group that receives placebo. They are concerned that being in the placebo group means that they won't be helped or be helpful. There are three reasons to be not concerned about possibly being assigned to a placebo group. 1) The placebo group is as important as the group receiving the active compound for the scientific and statistical purposes or developing new treatments. 2) Many studies have either a crossover design or an open label extension, in which the people who start as part of the placebo group eventually get access to the active compound. 3) Even the people in the placebo group get better during almost every clinical research study. This is called the "placebo affect" and it's not a mind trick, it's a real phenomenon. In headache clinical research, the placebo effect is so powerful that it is often very difficult to design a study that identifies that the active compound is better than placebo. Here's the answer on how to find a headache clinical research study to participate in: Go to www.clinicaltrials.gov In the "Find a Study" box, choose "recruiting and not yet recruiting". Enter in a "disease", which can be general (like "headache") or specific like ("migraine with aura" or "post-traumatic headache"). Make it even more specific by adding words in the "other terms" box. Choose a country (and state, city and / or radius). Click search, which opens the results screen. At the left of the results screen, you can add or remove filters to make your search more specific. After applying the filters you will have a short list of studies that could apply to you. If you click on one of the study titles in the results screen, it will take you to the study information page. This page shows a brief description of the study. Look for words like "double blind" and "placebo controlled" to identify high-quality studies. A little further down the screen you can see more information on study design. You would think it could be easy to find a couple hundred people to participate in a study, but it's not. So your willingness to participate REALLY counts! Further down the study information page are the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Don't get hung up on the details (which can get technical). If you think you're roughly a good fit, scroll a little further down to the "Contacts" section and call, email or mail. You will usually be contacted by a local site coordinator who will help you figure out if the study is a good fit for you. If it is, they will invite you in for a pre-screening visit. Please "like" and "subscribe"! See you soon!

Placebo is as effective as drugs to prevent migranes in kids

05:23
According to an article published in the January issue of the journal, Pediatrics, placebo is as effective as drugs in preventing migraine headaches in children. Only two drugs, Topamax and trazadone, worked better than placebo, and the very minimal benefits were not worth the risks from side effects. The benefit of placebo was a reduction from six headaches per month to three. The two drugs reduced headaches by one additional headache per month. Drugs such as inderal (beta blocker) and Depakote were no better than placebo! So why are doctors not prescribing placebos for migraine headaches in kids? Would it be more ethical to use dangerous treatments? Hardly! There are many ways to deal with headaches in both kids and adults such as chiropractic, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, medication, yoga, tai chi, qigong, massage, psychotherapy, orthopedic medicine, and photonic stimulation (photonic stimulation). Dr. Len has used photonic stimulation to treat and prevent most all kinds of headaches very successfully. It has been unusual for him to not relieve a headache within 5 minutes (no not a misprint!) and to prevent further headaches using this plus other integrative strategies. Reportagem acerca do Rivotril (Receita Perigosa - Record).mov
