The Rose Offers Breast Reconstruction Awareness

03:37
The Rose Patient Navigators have a tool to better educate women diagnosed with breast cancer regarding their breast reconstruction options. In this short video, Dr. Kendall Roehl, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeon and the Board of The Rose, carefully explains how reconstruction works. “Breast reconstruction is often the silver lining in a very bad chapter of a woman's life," says Dr. Roehl. "There are options for almost every woman diagnosed with breast cancer and the goal of reconstructive surgery is to make a woman feel whole and feminine again.” The video is made possible through funding from The Plastic Surgery Foundation and supports the annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day held each year in October.

2013 Run For The Rose (Extended Version)

03:24
http://www.runfortherose.com Dr. Marnie Rose was just 27 and in the first year of her pediatric medical residency at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital when she was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. Despite her diagnosis, she agreed to share all — her cancer journey, personal life and professional duties as a medical resident — with a TV crew from the ABC reality series Houston Medical. The critically acclaimed hospital series followed the lives of doctors, nurses, other health care professionals and patients at Memorial Hermann. Houston Medical aired nationally on the ABC Network for six weeks of summer, 2002. In the show's debut episode, Marnie stunned viewers by pulling off her wig, revealing that she was both a doctor and a patient. Throughout the run of Houston Medical, viewers were awed by her determination to keep working despite her illness, her candor about her disease, and her positive attitude in the face of adversity. "We wanted to honor Marnie's spirit, courage and strength with an event that would benefit two causes that touched her life so personally — brain cancer and children," says Myles Rose, Marnie's twin. "My sister chose to fight cancer with the nation watching. In doing so, she both put a "face" to brain cancer and offered strength and optimism to many who were ill. With the Run for the Rose, we hope to continue Marnie's legacy." Marnie died on August 23, 2002, from complications of her cancer, just five weeks after the show's final episode aired. The first nine years of Run for the Rose have been immensely successful, managing to net an incredible $90,000 the first year, $100,000 the second year, $110,000 the third year, $223,000 the fourth year, $320,000 the fifth year, $400,000 the sixth year, $425,000 the seventh year, $430,000 the eighth year, $455,000 the ninth year, and an amazing $500,000 this tenth anniversary year to benefit brain cancer research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center as well as pediatric initiatives at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital. Since 2003, the Dr. Marnie Rose Foundation has donated more than $3 million to our two hospitals. An idea that was born out of love for a daughter lost to an insidious disease has now taken on a life of its own. The compelling story of this young woman, Dr. Marnie Rose, has inspired those who knew her and loved her and those who have come to love her and know her through the foundation established in her name.

In Season Three of the hit competition series hosted by Mario Lopez, THE X FACTOR judges will travel the nation searching for talent 12 years old or over -- both solo artists and vocal groups -- who are willing to brave the panel for a chance to make their dreams of becoming a superstar come true. Auditions for THE X FACTOR were held this spring in Los Angeles, CA; Charleston, SC; New Orleans, LA; Long Island, NY; and Denver, CO. Contestants will audition in front of THE X FACTOR judges, including Simon Cowell, Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland, Paulina Rubio, and an audience of thousands. This will be the ultimate test to prove they have the vocal ability, charisma and stage presence it takes to become a global superstar or breakout music act and win a recording contract with Syco/Sony Music. Those contestants who survive the first auditions will be divided into four categories: Boys, Girls, Over 25s and Groups. Each category will be mentored by one of the show's judges. Not only is it a competition between the hopefuls to stake their claim for the coveted win, but it's also a showdown among the judges as to whose acts will dominate the competition and make it to the finals. The judges may have their say in how the competition progresses, but it will be up to America to decide who ultimately has THE X FACTOR. HOUSTON – Most people celebrate reaching milestones with smiles and applause. For Kim Roxie and Chris Noble, organizers of a night of awareness and fundraising for the nonprofit breast health organization The Rose, it was all about the hair. When the two women reached their goal of a full house at a special presentation of The Ensemble Theatre’s “I Wish You Love” – and thereby guaranteeing at least 200 mammograms for the uninsured – Chris went pink and Kim shaved her head. “Women go through dramatic changes when breast cancer enters their world and we wanted to make a dramatic statement when we knew those much needed mammograms would soon be available,” said Noble, the Director of Corporate and Business Relations at The Rose. “With a net of more than $44,400 from this great night of theater and public support, I was literally tickled pink!”

Angelina Jolie announces double mastectomy - Dr. Franklin Rose Reviews Double Mastectomy Procedure

03:34
Angelina Jolie revealed this week that she recently underwent a double mastectomy to avoid possible breast cancer. Houston Plastic Surgeon Dr. Franklin Rose commented on FOX 26 Houston News along with his patient Nancy who underwent the same procedure. Read Angelina's story and the reasoning behind her courageous decision & review the video featuring Dr. Franklin Rose & patient: http://www.myfoxhouston.com/story/22252196/2013/05/14/genetic-testing-for-breast-cancer HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Angelina Jolie and Sharon Osborne have both made their decision to undergo a double mastectomy public. You may also remember earlier this year Miss Washington DC announced she too carried a genetic mutation that increases her chances of getting breast cancer, but you don't have to go too far too find women just like them. "It's a life or death decision, it's not something you ponder over too much," said Nancy Jacobs who had her first stint with breast cancer at age 32. She underwent radiation and later was advised to take the BRCA test. The test checks for mutations in two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2. Since Jacobs already had breast cancer the test indicated the chances of a re-occurrence. A high score for her meant undergoing a double mastectomy. "Our breasts as women are how we look at ourselves, it's our femininity, it's who we are in a way," She said, "I can remember looking in the mirror the night before it happened and crying." But looking back now Jacobs wishes she could've taken the test sooner and made the decision to remove her breasts earlier. "In my case I went for the less drastic procedure because I was young I wanted to retain my breasts," she said. There is currently no standard criteria for referring anyone for genetic testing, but it's recommended women with a family history of breast and ovarian cancer also take it. The test however costs about $3,000. "In speaking with my gynecology colleagues, they have great difficult grappling with some of the third party insurance carriers to get the test covered," reviews Dr. Franklin Rose. He has performed hundreds if not thousands of reconstructive surgeries on double mastectomy patients. He is helping Jacobs with her reconstructive process, one he says that can have a tremendous effect on how women feel about their bodies post-op. "As it would relate to psychological impact of reconstructive surgery, just body image and self-esteem are so much improved," he said. Jacobs applauds Jolie's decision to tell her story, but she hopes in the near future genetic testing of this kind is more accessible to all women. Breast cancer survivor faces bullying after Melania Makeover

03:33
Plastic Surgery to Look Like Melania Trump? Find out Why Claudia Chose to do so! HOUSTON – For Claudia Sierra, years of bullying and teasing about her looks took a toll on the mother of two. “Being bullied for my skin color, my nose, my heritage, my hair, my everything, and I would make fun of my own self with these kids that would make fun of me, and I brought it up all the way to an adult,” Sierra said. Sierra said the bullying even carried over into romantic relationships. “It was natural for me to be abused in relationships,” she said. “And then it went a step further, where the mental and the abuse words were not working, so this particular person thought, well, let me toss her around. I had a bar stool smashed on my head. I mean, on my nose, and it popped.” A survivor of domestic violence, Sierra also beat breast cancer. Even after celebrating those victories, she continued to endure criticism about her appearance. One conversation in particular made her decide she was ready change the way she looked. “I went on a date, and this man asked for my driver’s license to confirm my age, and I said, ‘I’m 41,’ and I was so excited about it,” Sierra said. “I had just finished having breast cancer, did the radiation. It was one of my first dates. I was super-excited. He looked at (my ID) and said, ‘You look a lot older than that.’” She went to Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Franklin Rose for consultation. “I said, ‘Dr. Rose, I want you to change everything that has mentally hurt me. And I don’t want to feel or look at that person anymore,’” Sierra said. “When you have cancer, there’s a lot of sleep that is lost. And I felt a little weak, and I didn’t look rested, so we pulled my cheeks back. We did kind of like a semi-facelift right here.” Dr. Rose removed a bump in her nose, gave her breast implants, a tummy tuck and sculpted her abs. “I feel like a woman again,” Sierra said. Sierra said the entire makeover was inspired by a famous first lady: Melania Trump. Sierra’s surgeries were chronicled by television show Inside Edition and made headlines in the New York Daily News, turning her story into a media sensation and creating a backlash. “I said I was inspired by her. I never said I wanted to look exactly like her,” Sierra said. “Melania Trump is Melania Trump, and Claudia Sierra is Claudia Sierra.” Once people got wind of the story, Sierra said the bullying started again – this time on social media. “Every night, at 3 or 4 in the morning, for some reason I wake up and I’ve got Google alerts, and I’ve got messages from random friends, and they’re like, ‘Gosh, can you believe what they’re saying? Can you believe, can you believe? Claudia, you’re just getting bashed. Did you see this picture they put out on you?'” When asked what she wants people to really know about her, Sierra’s response was simple. “I feel so good, and I’m so healthy, and I wish the people that are judging me and insulting me would say, ‘You know what, if I could, I would.’ Let me enjoy it. Let me have this moment,” she said. Sierra said although hurtful, the entire ordeal has made her stronger. She said she now plans to write a book on bullying and use it to encourage children and adults who have been bullied, as well as help women who have been the victims of domestic abuse.
