01:50
(KUTV) Pregnant women need to be careful when selecting medications to treat allergies and pain.Your everyday medications are not always okay during pregnancy, certified nurse midwife Carlie Yearsley with Alta View Hospital said. There are some over-the-counter medications you can use, but you defiantly want to speak to your provider so that you are also aware of what you are taking during your pregnancy.Yearsley says Tylenol is generally okay in pregnancy, but ibuprofen is not. But there is one thing all women should be taking, according to doctors, and that is vitamins on a daily basis. Some women dont tolerate prenatal vitamins very well so they take childrens vitamins. So they need to make sure they get the full amount of folic acid, which is 400 microgramswhich is usually 2 childrens vitamins, Yearsley explains. If you have questions about what you cant take during pregnancy, visit: http://health.utah.gov/prl/(Copyright 2013 Sinclair Broadcasting Group)

A new study by researchers from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo in Norway found that taking too much acetaminophen, the active painkiller in Tylenol, might be detrimental to a developing child during pregnancy. A new study by researchers from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo in Norway found that taking too much acetaminophen, the active painkiller in Tylenol, might be detrimental to a developing child during pregnancy. Tylenol is the most popular over the counter drug in the United States and many pregnant women take it for minor aches and pains. According to one expert, 65 percent of expectant mothers will take acetaminophen during their pregnancy. Previous research hasn't found any dangers for pregnant women taking the recommended amount. The latest study surveyed the mothers of 48 thousand children about their use of medication at 17 and 30 weeks of pregnancy as well as 6 months after birth, and completed a survey on the development of their child three years later. The results of the survey show that long term use of acetaminophen lead to a 70 percent increase in behavior problems by age three. Around 4 percent of the mothers who participated in the survey took Tylenol for 28 or more days while they were with child. Children whose mothers had taken the painkiller reportedly had inferior motor skills, started walking later, and had problems with communication and language capabilities.

Pain Killer Use During Pregnancy Linked to ADHD

01:09
Women who use popular pain killer acetaminophen, found in Tylenol, while pregnant may be more likely to have children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD, a Norwegian study suggests. The research, published in the journal Pediatrics, collected information from nearly 113,000 children and their parents. Of the final sample, nearly half of the women used acetaminophen during pregnancy. Nearly 2,250 were diagnosed with ADHD. Study authors say the link applies to long-term use -- a month or longer. In fact, the study found when future moms used the drugs for 8 days or less, their kids show a decreased risk for ADHD. Acetaminophen is considered the safe drug for pregnant women who have a fever or pain, since ibuprofen may harm their baby. The lead author of the study told CNN pregnant women who need acetaminophen should not refrain from short-term use.

When you find out that you’re pregnant, you’ll start hearing all kinds of things that you should and shouldn’t do as a first time mother. You might be told not to touch cats (unnecessary), not to eat fish (just high-mercury types) or to take a prenatal vitamin (this is a good idea). Another thing people might caution you about is dyeing your hair. But do you really have to go without your color for nine months? It may seem like a scary prospect. So in this video, we'll share the factsabout the myth and 5 incredibly simple tipsto safely dye your hair during pregnancy. Logo intro Lets start with the Facts. # The chemicals in permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes are not highly toxic. Most research, although limited, shows it's safe to colour your hair while pregnant. # Many women decide to wait to dye their hair until after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, when the risk of chemical substances harming the baby is much lower. # Most doctors would say -- there's no good proof that the chemicals in hair dye cause birth defects, miscarriages, or any other pregnancy complications, and it's probably fine to dye your hair a couple of times during pregnancy. Now, here are 5 simple Tips to safely dye your hair during pregnancy. #1) Here are also no studies that confirm that these products are totally safe, which is why experts recommend taking precautions like waiting until the second or third trimester, after the critical stages of your baby's organ development are complete. #2)opting for vegetable dyes and semipermanent color Opt for vegetable dyes and semi permanent color (hues that wash out after about a month), which usually don't contain harsh chemicals like ammonia or peroxide. #3) Highlighting hair If you're still worried, consider getting highlights, which aren't applied directly to the scalp and are therefore less likely to be absorbed by your body. The chemicals used are only absorbed by your hair, and not by your scalp or bloodstream. #4) Wear gloves If you choose to color your own hair, wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated space to minimize your exposure to the chemicals used in the coloring process. #5) Don't leave the dye on any longer than necessary, and make sure your scalp is thoroughly rinsed at the end of the process. So in the end, if having beautiful hair will make the bloated feet more bearable, then go for it. If you think the potential risk will cause you worry, then wait a few months to color. If you’re still concerned about the health risks, then we recommend consulting your physician to be safe. Remember that hormonal changes can make your hair react differently, so you might not get what you expect — even from your regular formula. Thanks for watching. Let us know your thoughts in the comment section. We publish new videos every day, so don’t forget to subscribe and share the video.
Cold Medicine during Pregnancy

08:17
**Phenylephrine** Class C (effects unknown during pregnancy) **Pheniramine** Class C **Acetaminophen** Class B The most dangerous time to take Class C medications is during the first trimester when baby's organs are most susceptible to birth defects. I am 19 weeks pregnant and not over-using the medications and am taking them in small, limited quantity. When I said that the Phiramine was low risk I meant that there aren't studies that conclusively prove that it causes birth defects in humans during pregnancy. The reason you're not supposed to take Nyquil, Flu&Sore Throat, & other cold medicines is the DXM (dextromethorphan), and phenylephrine it contains. DXM is a cough suppressant and it helps loosen up mucus and stuff. They are listed as Class C during pregnancy because it's effects are *unknown*. They want you to be better safe than sorry. So no --- just because you have taken or take Nyquil etc during pregnancy DOES NOT mean your baby will be retarded or deformed. People suggesting this are severely misinformed. Doctors just want you to be careful with it! Healthy babies are awesome! Weight the risks before taking any Class C medication. Very helpful website: http://www.obfocus.com/high-risk/meds1.htm

How Safe is the Medicine Doctors Prescribe Most?

05:18
Just because more doctors prescribe Tylenol than any other pain medication does not make it safe, especially for the babies of pregnant mothers according to an article published in the International Journal of Epidemiology in October of 2013. This study of 3000 sibling pairs showed that pregnant mothers using Tylenol (acetaminophen or paracetamol) for more than 28 days put their child at risk for psychomotor abnormalities that included poor motor skills, communication skills, and more behavioral abnormalities. This same effect was not seen with ibuprofen, which suggests it was the effect of the Tylenol itself. So, if Tylenol is dangerous, what is safe?!

Study: Small amount of acetaminophen does not appear to be harmful during pregnancy

02:35
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A new study takes a closer look at pregnancy and a common over the counter pain reliever. In the study in the Journal of Epidemiology, researchers wanted to know more about acetaminophen use in pregnancy. Acetaminophen is the common ingredient in over the counter medications such as Tylenol. Researchers were specifically looking at whether or not acetaminophen’s use in pregnancy could be linked to autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Specialists at the Cleveland Clinic who reviewed the study say small amounts of this ingredient do appear to be okay. Occasional use less than eight days in a pregnancy did not increase risk. The study looked at data from more than 150,000 pairs of mothers and children from three to eleven years out. Occasional use of acetaminophen did not appear to be harmful. Researchers did see an association between prolonged use of the drug and the risk of autism and ADHD. An association however, does not prove cause and effect. The children of mothers with prolonged exposure to acetaminophen were shown to have a 30 percent increased risk of ADHD, and a 20 percent increased risk of autism. It's difficult to draw conclusions from this research according to Cleveland specialists because there is so much that is not known about autism and it's causes. They do point out that important thing that pregnant moms need to know is that acetaminophen is still the safest known drug to take to treat problems like fever and pain while pregnant. The reason that's important is that it’s considered riskier to have an untreated fever than it is to take acetaminophen while pregnant. The prolonged effect is not known, so it's always important to talk to your own health care provider.

15 Weeks Pregnant | Tooth Extraction & Oral Surgery

08:32
During my 15th week of pregnancy, I got two teeth extracted under local anesthesia by an oral surgeon. There was a lot of pressure, some pain, and overall it was a pretty physical surgery. The whole process took about 5 minutes. If you need dental work, get it done before you get pregnant. There was a lot of pain, stress, bacteria, prescription pain drugs, time away from work, and a x-ray that could have been avoided. Pregnancy is hard enough without other medical problems. Side note on the X-ray, I am not sure if anyone is completely comfortable with x-ray during pregnancy but the risk and benefit of each scenario must be weighed out. My Surgeon waited until my second trimester and covered me with a double shield before take 1 full mouth x-ray. I was not actively trying to conceive and let my dental problems go untreated before falling pregnant. So far during my pregnancy, I have had 3 cavities filled and the 2 extractions, #16 a wisdom tooth, and #13 a premolar. The recovery was easy and painless compared to the toothaches and pain I experienced early in pregnancy. The pain was so intense that I went to the Emergency Room one night at 7 weeks pregnant. They prescribed me Vicodin in the ER and Tylenol #3 with codeine for after my teeth were pulled. Both are scary, protected narcotics with a risk of addiction. I stopped taking the Vicodin as soon as my pain subsided, which was probably 4 weeks ago, and I only took 1 Tylenol #3 the first night after having the oral surgery. I continued to take regular strength, over the counter Tylenol for about 2 days after the surgery, but I don't even need that anymore. Overall, not the best experience of my life. I would much rather get a tooth pulled sleep, under general anesthesia, but it really wasn't the worst experience either. Heck, it wasn't even my worst dental experience. I hope this helps another pregnant mom with dental and teeth issues, as I know it is a very common pregnancy symptom. My Vegan Cooking Channel http://youtube.com/thesweetestvegan

Could Tylenol Be Dangerous During Pregnancy?

00:48
While acetaminophen is commonly used during pregnancy for pain and fever, researchers in England linked it to behavioral problems in children by age 7. For the study, published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, researchers analyzed data on 7,796 mothers participating in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children in 1991 and 1992. The study collected data on mothers and children, with information on acetaminophen use collected at 18 and 32 weeks of pregnancy, and then when children were 7 years old. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/08/15/Tylenol-use-during-pregnancy-linked-to-behavioral-problems-in-children/9361471272499/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

They are sometimes used to delay early delivery for 48 hrs up to 10 days. Nsaid risk NSAIDs cross the placenta and may harm the unborn child. Depends on the type of NSAID, dose and duration of therapy, gestational period and time between dosing and delivery. Study by Levy et al. 65,000 patient records reviewed.
