Wildflower Cabin, Amazing Small House Design Ideas

03:29
Wildflower Cabin was built in the 1920s and still retains that old-time cabin feel with log trusses, exposed rafters and knotty pine panelling. It sits near Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino National Forest, California. The cabin once housed U.S. Forest Service workers but is now privately owned and is being used for vacation rentals. The front door opens to the living room in the middle of the cabin’s 600 ft2 (55.7 m2) floor plan. As you come in the door, the kitchen and dining room are to the right while the bedroom and bathroom are to the left. The focus of the living room is the original brick fireplace, perfect for warming up after a day of skiing at one of the nearby resorts. A steep stair to one side leads up to a snug loft over the kitchen and dining room. The loft could be used as a guest bedroom but it wouldn’t be the most convenient as the only bathroom is reached by passing through the main-floor bedroom. Both the bathroom and the compact kitchen have been updated in styles appropriate to the cabin. The kitchen features custom cabinets and a vintage Wedgewood stove. Only a couple hours drive from Los Angeles, Wildflower Cabin provides an easy escape from the city. It can be rented through Airbnb. https://fr.airbnb.com/rooms/826215 Photographs courtesy of Airbnb / Wildflower Cabin. Vipp Shelter tiny prefab as precise industrial-era appliance

19:32
The Danish company VIPP (famous for its iconic 1939 wastebasket, now in the MOMA) has created a prefab tiny home designed down to the last detail (flashlight included). Their 592-square-foot “plug and play getaway” wasn’t designed to blend into nature, but to float above it; fifty thousand pounds of glass and steel serve as a frame for the surrounding landscape. VIPP designer Morten Bo Jensen explains that the shelter wasn’t designed as a piece of architecture, but an industrial object. The prefab structure is built in a factory and the four modules are transported by truck to the site. The shelter can be constructed in 3 to 5 days using just bolts for the modules and 9,000 screws for the steel plates. The small prefab can house 4 people: 2 on a daybed and 2 in a loft bedroom. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls slide open and closed with mechanical rollers, designed to move the 400 or 500-kilo doors with ease. “We kind of like this idea that you just grab it and slide it open,” explains Jensen, “instead of motorized solutions that would be more different from our philosophy of very mechanical products that just last for a long time.” https://www.vipp.com/en/shelter/the-vipp-shelter/ Original story: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/vipp-shelter-tiny-prefab-as-precise-industrial-era-appliance/

This Farm of the Future Uses No Soil and 95% Less Water

Watch the next episode about San Francisco becoming a zero waste city: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg3OA1s8-SI&list=UUJsSEDFFnMFvW9JWU6XUn0Q As urban populations continue to rise, innovators are looking beyond traditional farming as a way to feed everyone while having less impact on our land and water resources. Vertical farming is one solution that's been implemented around the world. Vertical farms produce crops in stacked layers, often in controlled environments such as those built by AeroFarms in Newark, New Jersey. AeroFarms grows a variety of leafy salad greens using a process called "aeroponics," which relies on air and mist. AeroFarms' crops are grown entirely indoors using a reusable cloth medium made from recycled plastics. In the absence of sun exposure, the company uses LED lights that expose plants to only certain types of spectrum. AeroFarms claims it uses 95% less water than a traditional farm thanks to its specially designed root misting system. And it is now building out a new 70,000 square foot facility in a former steel mill. Once completed, it's expected to grow 2 million pounds of greens per year, making it the largest indoor vertical farm in the world. Exploration Ambassador's Retreat

02:58
We are planning an Ambassador's Retreat May 8,9,10, 11, 2017 at a beautiful mountaintop retreat near Emigrant, Montana. Yes- just 25 miles from Yellowstone. We want to include participants from across Montana and several sites throughout the country, meeting the Museum's national status. We want to let teachers across Montana and across the country know of the resources we offer for their classrooms. Financial details are not yet finalized, but it is our goal to pay your travel expenses to and from the conference and or course, your lodging and food will be provided while at our conference site. We want you to help us launch our Educational Arm. During the few days that we are together, we are hopeful that the NMFSH can entice you to become an ambassador for Conservation Education with the National Museum of Forest Service History. We have been awarded a generous grant from the Library of Congress/Teaching Primary Sources division. Our Teaching Primary Sources trainer from Metropolitan University in Denver will teach us to use both the extensive Library of Congress primary source materials as well as the NMFSH's extensive database. You will design a lesson plan for use in your classroom and we will ask you to share it with our educational website. Our goal is to create materials and lesson plans to help teachers from across the country become more familiar with the mission and activity of the Museum and to offer them assistance with conservation history education. When two excellent resources- Library of Congress and National Museum of Forest Service History join, something powerful is bound to happen. When we meet, we will decide together what our follow-up activity should be. In addition to our workshop time, we will explore the high, rugged country just 25 miles north of Yellowstone National Park. You may want to schedule a time before or after the workshop to visit Yellowstone Park. We will be 25 miles north of Gardner which is the North Entrance. Please view the attached video to see our site. We plan team building activities (maybe a ropes course if time allows) hikes, conversation and wonderful food and friendship.

Amazing Viking Turf House Tour - Stunning Green Building!

04:04
Thank you to Squarespace for sponsoring this video :) You can visit http://squarespace.com/exploringalternatives to get 10% off your first purchase! In this video we're excited to share the re-created 1000-year-old Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada. We visited the site last fall and had we really enjoyed learning more about the settlement, but also about the traditional construction techniques they used for the turf dwellings and workshops. The turf houses are built with timber frames that are load bearing, and walls that are built with peat bricks that have been cut and dried from a nearby bog. Each wall actually has two layers of the bricks, with layer of gravel sandwiched in the middle to help drain any moisture before it infiltrates to the interior of the structure. It's incredible that the Vikings were able to build such beautiful and functional structures with limited building materials, and in such a harsh environment. Another thing that we found really neat that didn't have anything to do with the structures was the fact that the bog not only provided peat for building, but bog iron they could use to create nails and other hardware they needed to repair their ships. If you're interested, here's a link to our longer, more in-depth video about an Icelandic turf house: https://youtu.be/_7JFwLyrdJw And here's a link where you can learn more about the L'Anse aux Meadows historic Viking settlement in Newfoundland: http://www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/nl/meadows Thanks for watching! Expert Spotlight: Jack D. Cohen, Research Physical Scientist, U.S. Forest Service

No one has done more to define the wildland-urban interface problem and empower homeowners to reduce their risk of wildfire than Jack Cohen. His post-fire field examinations and laboratory-based research on fire dynamics led to the concept of the home ignition zone, a phrase he coined. Cohen also co-developed the U.S. National Fire Danger Rating System and contributed to the U.S. fire behavior prediction systems. Jack D. 1920s Cabin is Large for a Tiny Home, But its cozy Loft is aspac-efficient sanctuary. It's right around that time of the year when people tend to feel a bit cooped up from being inside more often than they're used to. This is a good time to get away. For couples seeking a romantic weekend away in the outdoors, the Wildflower Cabin at Lake Arrowhead in Southern California just might be the prime spot. This cabin was built in the 1920s for U.S. Forest Service employees, and it was remodeled as a family cabin. Woodworker Builds The Perfect Tiny House Boat for Life on the Water

06:23
A woodworking wizard named Richard built the Koroc - a beautiful floating tiny house RV on aluminum pontoons. It's unbelievable what a comfortable home he's created in such a small space. Imagine living in this micro cabin, floating on a river or a lake, and enjoying fresh air on an enormous deck? If you can't tell already, we're in love with this boat! If you want to learn more about Richard's beautiful boat, you can check out his website here: http://daigno.ca/en/home.html We randomly drove past this houseboat in Montebello, Quebec, Canada on our way to pick up some RV windows so we emailed the owner and asked him if we could take a tour inside and have him put it in the water for us. Luckily he said yes! We spent a beautiful sunny afternoon on Le Koroc (built by Richard's company Daigno) admiring his handy work. Everything in this house boat is built by hand, from the beams to the cabinets, the deck, water filter, bathroom, kitchen and more. Richard has a solar panel for electricity, a Martin propane heater, a propane cooktop, a DIY carbon filter for filtering grey water, a self-contained toilet, two dinettes (one that converts into a double bed), and tons of windows, not to mention the huge deck. It's off-grid minimalist living paradise! Ute Mountain Fire Lookout Tower on the Ashley National Forest in Utah - short version

02:24
See full version http://youtu.be/fa085IG6PhI The Ute Mountain Lookout was the first and is the last standing fire tower with living quarters above ground in Utah. The tower offers a panoramic view of the Ashley National Forest and surrounding area. From it, an observer can see a 360 degree view of miles of virtually uninhabited northeastern slope of the Uinta Mountain Range. Between 1935-1937, the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the tower. The tower served as the fire lookout's living quarters, thirty feet above the ground in a fourteen by fourteen foot space. The Tower was used as a fire lookout tower from 1937 to 1968, closed from 1969 to 1986, rededicated August 21, 1987 and used as an interpretive historic site from 1987 to 2008, closed from 2009 to 2014, and now will be reopened as both fire lookout and interpretive historic site in 2015. Ute Tower was a tourist attraction until its closing September, 2008. Inspections revealed some decay in the tower legs and stairway. The tower was closed until repairs were made. A rededication ceremony was held September 20, 2014. Due to the tower's role in forest history and the efforts of those who preserved and restored it for operational use, Ute Lookout is on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it stands as a monument to a part of our cultural heritage—the early years of fire prevention and detection of the Forest Service. You can visit the tower and see what life is like for fire lookouts. The tower is located south of Manila, Utah, two and one-half miles west of Sheep Creek Geologic Loop. Take the turn off towards Spirit Lake, the road is unpaved and narrow. Hiking trails into the surrounding forest also begin at the tower parking area. The tower is open Memorial Weekend thru Labor Day Weekend, Friday thru Monday. Funding provided by the Ashley National Forest Resource Advisory Committee through Daggett, Duchesne and Uintah Counties under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act and an agreement with HistoriCorps led to the restoration of the lookout. Filmed and edited by Charity Parks.

The urban life is increasingly more stressful, up to the point that stress has been called a modern medical disease and a source for a lot of illnesses. A house in the middle of nature can bring some important and much needed time for relaxation in your weekly energetic lifestyle. This small cottage on a hill could be the perfect hideout from the busy city. Seeming almost like grabbed from some fairytale or a medieval story, the odd shape and straight line design make it seem like it’s following the direction of the surrounding trees. The cottage has the first level dedicated to comfort and lounging, while the second floor is thought for reading and meditation – the large windows help a lot in this regard. The interior design is simple and basic, but carefully thought to evoke moments of reflection and relaxation. Browse through the images to get a clearer picture. A weekend spent here could definitely charge up your batteries for an entire week! These Old Cabins

11:04
By their nature, the historic properties owned by the forest service, many of which are still in use today, require special care. Once destroyed by natural forces, normal wear and tear or vandalism, they are irreplaceable. In October 1991, the Forest Service Region One established an historic preservation team within its engineering department: A highly skilled group of craftsmen trained to maintain and restore the historic buildings of the region.

How to Fight Forest Fires

14:35
We tagged along with a squad of wilderness firefighters from the Oregonian boonies as they work to prevent their hometown from being torched to ashes like the super inflammable tinderbox that surrounds them on all sides. Check out more VICE Documentaries here: http://bit.ly/VICE-Documentaries Whenever someone at our office bitches about being overworked, our stock response is "Beats digging ditches." While the express intention of the statement is usually not-so-supportive, we think it's a healthy reminder that at the end of the day, we are all basically professional emailers and should be thankful for such. The wildland firefighters who work for Grayback Forestry in Southern Oregon have no such motivational adages because their job is actually digging ditches. Around active forest fires. On the sides of mountains. You can't even bitch at these guys for having cushy government pensions to fall back on when they get older, because they're all private-sector contractors. Which means if they aren't out fighting forest fires or doing preventative forestry on unburned woods (basically extreme landscaping), they are losing money. They are literally the hardest working men in tree business. We spent a few days following a crew of Grayback forest-firefighters walk up the sides of what most people would consider a cliff to chop down underbrush in preparation for a controlled burn. This is what they like to call "project work," aka the light stuff in between fires, and yet it was still some of the hardest most least-rewarding work we have ever tried to do in our lives. Unless you consider 12-hour-plus shifts of backbreaking labor, virtually zero outside recognition, and occasional accusations of being shills for the timber industry rewards. Which we do not. Mission Viejo Client Testimonial on a Complete Design Build Home Remodel with Custom Cabinets

00:41
Kathy has been a long-term client of Alex after having worked with him on another kitchen remodel in her previous home in 2000. She has since moved to a new waterfront Mission Viejo home, and after interviewing three other designers, Kathy again decided Alex was the right person for not just her kitchen remodel, but the renovation of her entire home. The kitchen project included overhauling the layout because the old kitchen felt cramped and lacking in space. APlus created a design that included the removal of a wall separating the kitchen from the living space, creating an open-concept floorplan. The kitchen was transformed into a spacious U-Shaped design, tailored to meet Kathy’s cooking and dining specifications. The kitchen boasts a sophisticated transitional style with dark espresso cabinetry that provides a distinctive juxtaposition to the light rustic-inspired plank flooring of the kitchen. There was a tremendous focus on details including the crown molding, custom cabinetry and the inclusion of ample storage space. There were built-in spaces designed to accommodate the stainless steel appliances, and the central island includes not only in-kitchen seating space but also even more storage. An ornate chandelier hangs over the island, and the kitchen also includes space for a large dining table in addition to the island seating. Pale gray granite countertops complete this Mission Viejo kitchen and are extended along the wall to become the backsplash as well. for more photos of this beautiful home remodel you can check out the project portfolio pages: http://www.apluskitchen.com/Orange-County-Mission-Viejo-Kitchen-Home-Remodel-Project50.html for more photos of this beautiful home remodel you can check out the project portfolio pages: http://www.apluskitchen.com/Orange-County-Mission-Viejo-Kitchen-Home-Remodel-Project50.html APlus has been a family-owned business for two generations. Zaagkii Wings & Seeds Project: Northern Michigan teens, KBIC tribal youth protect pollinators

10:58
Marquette, MI - Northern MI teens in are continuing their mission to protect pollinators during 2009 by helping butterflies & restoring native plants to areas of the Upper Peninsula. Billions of these bees are dying across the world in a syndrome called Colony Collapse Disorder & its not clear why - although human impact on the environment are among the suspected causes. A world without bees would mean world without food as was dramatically pointed out in the Jerry Seinfield 2007 comedy Bee movie. Bees go on strike causing plants across the world die - that means no food, no flowers, no trees - the death of civilization. After bees, the next best pollinators are butterflies. Marquette, MI area teens & Native American youth spent the summer of 2008 building butterfly houses - that are longer & slimmer than birdhouses & are lined with bark. Teens participating in the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Summer Youth Program built & painted the houses at the tribes Natural Resource Department along Lake Superior. KBIC Natural Resource Department Director Todd Warner said the Zaagkii Project is a good way for youth to become aware of their connection to natural resources & nature. The butterfly houses offer protection to butterflies that can enter thru tiny slits. Butterfly houses also offer rest to migrating monarchs & can be used for reproduction. Marquette teens have planted or distributed 26,000 native plant including at the Hiawatha National Forest greenhouse in Marquette. In the spring of 2009 some of the plants will be planted at several areas across northern MI including at Sand Point - a beach that the KBIC has been repairing from the effects of copper mining. About 100 years ago, the mine dumped copper processing waste into Lake Superior polluting miles of shoreline. KBIC capped the pollution & the native plants will be used to attract wildlife & restore the ecosystem. The Zaagkii Project was founded by the non- profit Cedar Tree Institute in Marquette that has sponsored numerous environment projects. The Zaagkii Project is sponsored by the CTI, Marquette County Juvenile Court, KBIC & the United States Forest Service. Future videos will include a look at a bee farm in Marquette County that fascinated Zaagkii Project teens who learned about the importance of pollinators. Artist builds his Savannah studio with shipping containers

11:42
Architect, artist, designer Julio Garcia had been designing plans for shipping container homes for a decade before he found the perfect place to build one: on a long, narrow stretch of his property in Savannah, Georgia. “I’m a big believer we should be adapting to the environment… I remember walking out and looking at the yard and thinking oh my god the land is calling for this linear design.” He picked up two 40 foot shipping containers from the Port of Savannah and, thanks to much advance planning, he was able to install them without removing one tree from his property. He offset the two boxes, cut out the interior container walls and added I-beams, a shed roof and clerestory windows in the center to provide plenty of daylighting. “There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re inside a container so in the design we had to address that. I’ve been in a couple of projects and they don’t function very well and you’re like, ‘Oh, I still feel like I’m in a metal box’.” Garcia believes containers can make for affordable homes: “you could put up a structure like this for about 50K”, but much of the interior was salvaged from other job sites (i.e. the drywall and the kitchen). His Price Street Projects creates plans that are “almost do-it-yourself plans” for shipping container homes and he has installed commercial container spaces, but he’s a big believer that the site should determine the design. http://pricestreetprojects.com/ Original story: https://faircompanies.com/videos/artist-builds-his-savannah-studio-with-shipping-containers

This beautiful, remote property is located on Genoa Peak Road, which is a seasonal Forest Service road running from the top of Spooner Summit to Kingsbury Grade. The property incorporates four contiguous parcels that comprise over 560 acres of land with dedicated, recorded access. Located entirely within Douglas County, Nevada, and outside of the Tahoe basin, this property offers a great opportunity for a summer/winter retreat far from the crowds yet minutes to Lake Tahoe, Stateline Casinos, and Carson City. This expansive timbered property is a private in-holding completely surrounded by National Forest Service land. An old style Tahoe cabin sits on the property with water, propane and septic in place. The cabin is off the grid and running water is supplied by a spring piped into the cabin. A welcoming stone fireplace inside adds to the functional, rustic charm. Adjacent is a huge fire pit, perfect for enjoying those cool evenings with family and friends. Lose yourself star gazing from a place of peace and privacy with no light pollution to disturb the view. The parcels are reached from a seasonal road that runs for several miles through the property. There are numerous building sites for a main house, outbuildings, etc. The road is gated and is closed in fall and opened again in spring. The cabin is accessible in winter via snow machines or skis/snowshoes. The remote location offers refuge to abundant wildlife and plant life. The land runs from steep rocky outcrops to lush meadow areas, from standing timber to open, sunny saddles. There are numerous great hikes and amazing mountain and valley views from everywhere on the property. The land slopes to the Carson Valley on the east side, and to the Tahoe Basin on the west. The corners have been recently marked by the forest service. These one of a kind parcels have been in the one family for generations. The property has historical significance as there are the remnants of an 1870's lumber camp on the eastern edge of the property overlooking Jacks Creek drainage, Jacks Valley, and Carson Valley. This amazing piece of the Sierras is offered at $5,000 per acre. Exchange, or other types of creative financing would be considered on a case by case basis. This would be an excellent 1031 candidate for buy and hold, or as a future offering to the US Forest service which has expressed a strong interest in acquiring these parcels. Call David for more information or a private showing.
