Unfortunately, most people in today's modern society do have a small (or large) vitamin D deficiency and aren't receiving enough each day for optimal health. It will vary from person to person and you'd ultimately need to get blood work done to know for sure, but a vitamin d dosage of around 2000-5000IU per day is a good guideline. (The risk of toxicity is very low) Do vitamin supplements work? Yes, the research has clearly shown that supplementing with vitamin D3 will raise and sustain levels in the blood. It's also relatively inexpensive which is an added bonus. Again, vitamin D is not going to have any magical muscle growth effects, but it's still definitely a worthwhile supplement to consume. For example, its effects on mood and well being may improve your overall drive and motivation in and out of the gym... its effects on immune system function can help to fight off sickness... and its effects on optimizing testosterone could help out if your levels are particularly low. So, to correct your vitamin d deficiency and get all of the vitamin d benefits outlined in this video, I would highly recommend consuming a vitamin d3 supplement each day. For the best effects, take it with a meal (ideally one that contains some fat) in the morning or afternoon.

UPDATE 8.1.15 : Unfortunately, I will be repeating testing for my vitamin d, because the test I was given in this vid was not extremely sensitive. It would only show if had an extreme vitamin d deficiency leading to osteoporosis or a parathyroid issue, which says a lot, but not enough. I will be repeating with a more accurate 25 OH vitamin d test. Nevertheless, there is studies on tanning they have high vitamin d levels compared to non-tanners. Sterols are forms of steroids with a hydroxyl group at position three and a skeleton derived from cholestane.[4][1]:1785f [5] They can also vary more markedly by changes to the ring structure (for example, ring scissions which produce secosteroids such as vitamin D3). Hundreds of steroids are found in plants, animals and fungi. All steroids are manufactured in cells from the sterols lanosterol (animals and fungi) or cycloartenol (plants). Lanosterol and cycloartenol are derived from the cyclization of the triterpene squalene.[6]

In this video Dr Chris Steele MBE talks about how supplementation of vitamin D can improve symptoms of Crohn's disease. Crohn's Disease gets its name from New York doctor Burrill Bernard Crohn, who reported a number of cases in 1932 and the condition affects hundreds of thousands of people in Britain today. According to Crohn’s and Colitis UK, one in every 650 people across the UK is affected by the disease. Often described as a chronic condition, which means it is ongoing and lifelong, Crohn’s Disease causes ulceration and inflammation of the digestive tract, which causes redness, swelling and pain. The ulceration along the digestive tract has an adverse effect on the body’s ability to digest food and absorb vital nutrients. Crohn’s can occur at any point in the digestive system, but, most commonly, occurs in the ileum (the last part of the small intestine) or the colon. The disease affects people differently, and symptoms can vary from mild to severe. It may also change over time with people experiencing periods of good health and sudden flare-ups. The most common symptoms during a flare-up include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, tiredness and fatigue, loss of appetite and weight-loss. The condition is also linked to other health issues, such as anaemia, arthritis, thinning of bones and skin problems. Current Treatments There is no known cure for Crohn’s Disease at present. However, there are treatments currently available to help give long periods of relief from symptoms and help you live a normal, pain-free life. If you suffer with Crohn’s Disease, it’s likely that your doctor will focus on a treatment that controls flare-ups and reduces the unpleasant symptoms associated with the condition. This might include: anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Pentasa, Octasa or Salafalk; steroids, such as Hydrocortisone and Prednisolone; immunosuppressant drugs, such as Imuran or Purinethol, symptomatic drugs to help with the symptoms, such as Fybogel, Aspirin or Imodium. In severe cases, surgery may be recommended. Medical Developments A significant part of the problem facing medical experts attempting to find a cure for Crohn’s Disease is that, at present, the exact cause of the condition is unknown. According to Crohn’s and Colitis UK, researchers now suspect that the disease is caused by a number of factors, including inherited genes, an abnormal response within the immune system and environmental triggers. Suggested environmental triggers include smoking, diet and stress, but this has yet to be backed up by hard evidence. However, recent research has discovered a link between gut bacteria and Crohn’s Disease, which has led to interesting advances in treatment. Currently, doctors are exploring the benefits of conducting faecal transplants to treat the disease. New research has found that by supplementing your diet with vitamin D, symptoms can be relieved. Another new treatment that has gained considerable media exposure over the last few years is that of using pig worms to combat the symptoms of the disease. Although many people balk at the prospect of drinking thousands of microscopic worms, the controversial approach has been reported to be successful in many patients, with symptoms of the condition radically diminishing over the course of a few months. However, the treatment does come with its drawbacks. It’s prohibitively expensive and as a result, is currently unavailable in the UK. The Future of Crohn’s Disease Treatment Although there is still much about the condition that doctors don’t understand, research continues and there have been considerable developments in recent years. It may well be that medical experts are on the brink of discovering a cure, or at the very least, discovering a treatment that manages the symptoms far more effectively.

In this video, I cover the exact choices I make when it comes to the supplements I use to help me build muscle and stay lean year round. From the vitamins and minerals I take to the workout protein powders and formulas, everything I take in a day is covered and explained. For me, my morning starts with my essential fatty acids. I take both an omega-6 fatty acid in the form of evening primrose oil, as well as a high grade pharmaceutical omega-3 fish oil. The primrose is something I take because I tend to eat a very clean diet almost devoid of the highly processed foods that commonly are in abundance in the average diet. That combined with the fact that I carry a low body fat percentage year round, tends to make my essential omega-6’s that much more essential. I also have Reynaud’s, which is a form of impaired circulation to the hands and feet, that primrose oil has been shown to be helpful in treating. The omega-3’s are taken once in the morning, and again at lunch and at dinner. The grade of the oils is of prime importance when choosing an omega-3. Like prescription grade lovaza, Dr. C’s Omega-3’s are an incredibly potent form of essential fatty acids that have been shown to not only promote overall health and well being but also speed up muscle recovery by helping you recover from muscle inflammation. I take 1500mg of vitamin C, 1000 iu of vitamin E, CoQ10 and green tea extract to meet these needs here. As I point out in the video, I do get adequate levels of both C and E in y diet, however I still take these as an insurance policy and investment in my own health. Just be sure that you don’t take too much vitamin E as it is a fat soluble vitamin that can be taken in excess and not easily removed from the body. Green tea extract provides additional blood sugar stabilizing effects via it’s impact on insulin sensitivity and therefore finds it’s way into my daily supplement regime every morning. Each of the above vitamins are taken once with breakfast as described in the video. Next I take the ultimate insurance policy, a multivitamin. I believe again that while we tend to get the majority of our major vitamins from food, we do not necessarily address all of our micronutrient needs (especially if we tend to follow somewhat restrictive eating plans or styles) so I feel more comfortable taking a multi as a backup. One of the most important areas of late for me has been joint recovery supplementation. Having dealt with a bad right shoulder from a torn labrum, as well as two bad knees, I not only felt the need to take but actually set out and developed what I feel is the absolute most comprehensive joint recovery formula available. Boron is a rare trace-mineral that is vital for various functions in the human body. It originates from space matter like meteoroids, and can be found in small amounts in the earth’s soil. Boron has been proven to be an important trace mineral because it is essential for the growth and maintenance of bone; greatly improves wound healing; beneficially impacts the body’s use of estrogen, testosterone, and vitamin D; boosts magnesium absorption; reduces levels of inflammatory biomarkers. Study One study, in Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology, found that otherwise healthy men noted that acute supplementation of Boron, over the period of 6 hours trended to increase free testosterone (+14.7%) and DHT (+9.9%). Eight healthy male volunteers attended the laboratory on three occasions (days 0, 1 and 7). On the first day (day 0), a blood sample collection at 8.00 A.M was followed by ingestion of placebo with the breakfast. On the next day (supplementation-day 1), similar procedure was followed by ingestion of a capsule containing 10mg of boron. On both occasions blood was collected every 2h for the next 6h. Subjects were requested to consume a capsule of 10mg boron every day with their breakfast, and on the day 7, the blood collection was carried out at 8.00 A.M, again. Boron in plasma increased significantly following hours and weekly consumption. Six hours supplementation showed a significant decrease on sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), high sensitive CRP (hsCRP) and TNF-α level. After one week (in samples taken at 8.00 A.M, only), the mean plasma free testosterone increased and the mean plasma estradiol decreased significantly. Dihydrotestosterone, cortisol and vitamin D was elevated. Also, concentrations of all three inflammatory biomarkers decreased after supplementation. Nearly 5% of women in the US are on these drugs for a variety of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, vasculitis, and a myriad of skin disorders. The risk is related to the dose. Preventive treatment should include calcium, protein, vitamin D, vitamin K, strontium, regular weight bearing exercise and withdrawl of smoking and alcohol. There are also many drugs that predispose to osteoporosis that should be avoided if possible that include Coumadin, Heparin, proton pump inhibitors (includes Prilosec, Protonix, Nexium, Aciphex and others), SSRI antidepressants (such as Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, etc), Avandia, Actos, and diuretics.
