This can cause problems with the functioning of your body, and poor health.Ways to resolve a vitamin deficiency include eating a healthy and balanced diet and taking supplements. However, if you are on medication you could also suffer from a vitamin deficiency. Clinical nutritionist, Dr Josh Axe, says that men taking medication for high blood pressure and diabetes should take vitamin B12 supplements to avoid a vitamin deficiency. “Studies show that most men usually consume the daily B12 they need from eating things like beef, poultry and eggs,” he says online. “But, they often have trouble with proper absorption of vitamin B12 due to medication use, especially older men taking several prescriptions at once. “Medications like acid-blocking drugs and those used to manage blood pressure or diabetes can interfere with how B12 is metabolised by the body. “This is a problem considering vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to fatigue and central nervous system problems. ”The NHS warns that vitamin B12 is found largely in fish, meat and dairy products, rather than fruit, vegetables and grains. A deficiency of B12 causes the body to produce abnormally large red blood cells that can’t function normally. Symptoms include extreme tiredness, lack of energy, sore and red tongue and mouth ulcers, among others, according to the NHS. “Medication can cause vitamin B12 deficiency,” says the NHS on its website.“Certain medications, including anticonvulsants and proton pump inhibitors, can affect how much of these vitamins your body absorbs. ”Anticonvulsants are used to treat personality disorders, however, and proton pump inhibitor medication can be used to treat constipation and stomach problems. Some of the benefits of taking vitamin B12 supplements, according to Dr Josh Axe, include improvements to your mood, energy level, memory, heart, skin, hair and digestion. “A vitamin B12 deficiency is thought to be one of the leading nutrient deficiencies in the world. “Because of its wide-reaching roles within the body, a vitamin B12 deficiency can show up in many different negative symptoms, many of which are very noticeable, such as potential chronic fatigue, mood disorders like depression, and chronic stress or feeling run down. “Vitamin B12 can be taken in tablet form, in drops that you place under on the tongue or in oral spray form. “Sometimes seniors do better with drops and oral spray forms of vitamin B12 because they have trouble absorbing the vitamin from the stomach.

In fact, this is what I personally discovered with my own parents in 1998 and why I found natural alternatives to these toxic drugs for them. And over the years, it’s been proven more and more that these problems are the RULE and not the “exception”. In fact, researchers3 have now realized well over 80% of statin drug users, experience memory problems. Sadly, these are one of the most prescribed drugs on the planet. At the end of this video, I’ll give you natural alternatives to these drugs - the exact formula my own parents use. Anti-Depressants As much as 20% of the adult population use anti-depressants1, which is a depressing situation. In fact, in the past decade, the use of anti-depressants has increased by over 64%. According to a Harvard study2, anti-depressants can cause memory loss. The worst one being Paxil (paroxetine). However, problems can also be seen with others such as fluoxetine (Prozac) or sertraline (Zoloft), or a different type of antidepressants such as duloxetine (Cymbalta) or venlafaxine (Effexor) Anti-Anxiety Drugs Depression and anxiety typically go together. And anti-anxiety drugs, such as Benzodiazepines, cause what is called anterograde amnesia — which is the inability to form memories from events going forward in time. The most popular “benzo” drugs being alprazolam (Xanax) diazepam (Valium) lorazepam (Ativan) temazepam (Restoril) clonazepam (Klonopin) chlordiazepoxide (Librium) triazolam (Halcion) Again, I’ll give you natural alternatives to reduce anxiety at the end of this video. Cold Medicines In a Harvard study2, cold or allergy medications also cause memory loss. This would also include antihistamines (brompheniramine, chlorpheniramine and diphenhydramine) Some well-known OTC would be Midol PM® or Tylenol PM® (containing Acetaminophen, Diphenhydramine) Motrin PM® or Advil PM® (containing Diphenhydramine, Ibuprofen) PediaCare Children's Allergy and Cold® (containing Diphenhydramine, Phenylephrine) Robitussin Night Time Cough and Cold® (containing Diphenhydramine, Phenylephrine) Benadryl® Sominex® Unisom® Sadly, I had taken some of these drugs many years ago… I thought that since it’s OTC, it’s probably safe, but they aren’t. A drug is a drug - no matter how you take it or where you get it. Heart Burn / Antacids Another type of popular category of drugs that cause memory problems is heartburn and antiacids. The worst being cimetidine (Tagamet). However, the problem is also seen to a lesser extent with other similar drugs such as lansoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (Prilosec), or esomeprazole (Nexium) I know a lot of people who take these drugs. In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Folate & B12 Deficiency, Megaloblastic Anemia Hypersegmented Macrocytic Methylmalonic

These functions are particularly important in tissues that undergo frequent cellular division (like hematopoietic cells) and during periods of rapid cellular division (such as infancy and pregnancy). Folate is found naturally in leafy vegetables and Folium is the Latin word for leaf. Today many grains are also fortified with Folate. With so many items having Folate added a deficiency from decreased intake of Folate is not very common. Usually a deficiency is caused by an increased demand for folate through pregnancy or hemolytic anemias such as Sickle Cell Disease. Folate deficiencies in pregnant women are linked with the occurrence of Neural Tube Defects in the fetus. A deficiency can also be caused by drugs that inhibit the pathways that Folate is involved in such as Trimethoprim (antibiotic) and Methotrexate (Chemotherapy). A Folate deficiency primarily causes anemia (decreased red blood cells). Anemias can present with a wide range of symptoms including weakness, fatigue, pale skin and shortness of breath. Folate Deficiency causes a specific type of Anemia called Macrocytic/Megaloblstic Anemia where the size (Mean Corpuscular Volume) of the red blood cells increased. This is because as the creation of DNA is inhibited the cell cycle in the hematopoietic cells is stalled. Cellular division is stopped but the cell continues to grow resulting in a smaller number of cells which are larger than normal cells. Patients with this type of anemia also often present with Hypersegmented Neutrophils on a blood smear, which is a neutrophil with 5 or more "segments" in the nucleus. You are also going to see an elevation of Homocysteine levels in Folate Deficiency. This is because B12 needs to receive a methyl group from Folate so it can pass it on to Homocysteine to create Methionine. Less Folate means B12 doesn't have a methyl group to pass on and Homocysteine builds up. Unlike B12 deficiencies, Folate deficiency does not result in a buildup of Methylmalonic Acid or neurological symptoms. Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) is a vitamin, like Folate, that is important for 1 carbon chemical reactions. B12 is found in many animal products and Vegans are at the highest risk of deficiency. B12 taken in through the diet is bound to proteins. Stomach acid and digestive enzymes must first separate B12 from the proteins. If there is a deficiency of stomach acid due to disease or medication (like proton pump inhibitors or antacids) it can cause decreased absorption and B12 deficiency. Once it is no longer protein bound, B12 binds Intrinsic Factor which is released by the Parietal Cells in the stomach. Intrinsic Factor then chaperones the B12 to the terminal ileum where it is absorbed. Pernicious Anemia is the autoimmune destruction of parietal cells which leads to less Intrinsic Factor production. Less intrinsic factor means less B12 absorption and B12 deficiency. Damage to the terminal ileum, such as in Crohn's Disease, can also inhibit B12 absorption. Folate and B12 work closely together handing off methyl groups to each other. It is sort of like a game of hot potato. Folate doesn't "want" the methyl group so it passes it on to B12. B12 doesn't "want" it either so it passes it off to methionine. In effect, B12 helps recycle methyltetrahydrofolate back into tetrohydrofolate which can be used to create DNA. This means that a deficiency of B12 can cause a deficiency of Folate as less Folate is being recycled into its "active" form. Therefore, B12 deficiency present very similarly to Folate deficiency. You get Macrocytic/Megaloblastic Anemia with Hypersegmented Neutrophils and increased Homocysteine levels. If you mistakenly diagnose Folate Deficiency when it is really B12 Deficiency the patient will get better with Folate supplementation, but permanent neurological damage will be done overtime. Odd chain fatty acids are broken down to eventually give Methylmalonyl CoA. B12 is a cofactor in the process that converts methylmalonyl CoA into Succinyl CoA which can then be used in the TCA cycle to generate energy. If there is not enough B12 this reaction is slowed and Methylmalonic Acid builds up. This Methylmalonic Acid build up is toxic to neurons and leads to demyelination in the posterior and lateral columns of the spinal cord. This is called Subacute Combined Degeneration and presents with peripheral numbness/tingling, spasticity, and loss of vibration and proprioception.

Low Calcium Levels Contribute to Disease There are many medical conditions linked to calcium deficiency. The following list are some of the more common symptoms and side effects: Early bone loss (osteopenia) Muscle spasms and cramps (especially night time calf cramping) Heart palpitations Depression Fatigue Joint pain High Blood pressure Hormone abnormalities Blood clotting problems Gum disease Headaches The above problems are often times medicated before a doctor performs the proper nutritional evaluation. Keep in mind that serum calcium levels are not an accurate representation of calcium stores within the body. Too Much Calcium Can Also Be a Problem Calcium is a very commonly used nutritional supplement. Many doctors instruct their female patients to take calcium as a preventative for bone loss. Without monitoring and checking calcium, taking too much can contribute to many problems. Therefore; it is not recommended to take excessive calcium without need. Some symptoms of too much calcium include: Confusion Fatigue Irritability Constipation Magnesium and iron loss Heart Arrhythmia Kidney damage Drugs That Interfere with Calcium There are a number of prescription medications that can interfere with calcium absorption or metabolism. It is not the single or short term use of medication that one has to worry about, but taking some of the following medications long term (6 months or greater) can interfere with this mineral. Examples include: Corticosteroids -- these are commonly used for control of pain and inflammation. Some steroids are used to treat chronic fatigue, chronic muscle pain, and inflammatory joint pain. Additionally, some steroids are used in the treatment of asthma. Antacid medications -- these drugs are commonly used to treat gastric reflux, heartburn, and indigestion. Examples include Nexium, Tagamet, Tums, and Rolaids. These prescription and over the counter medications suppress and interfere with stomach acid production. Calcium requires acid to be absorbed properly. Sometimes people take Tums with calcium to as a calcium supplement. I have had patients whose doctors actually recommended this! Bad advice -- Don't take antacids for a source of dietary calcium. Foods High In Calcium Despite popular belief, milk and dairy products are not a necessity for calcium in the diet. Foods rich in calcium are kale, broccoli, turnip greens, mustard greens, collards, figs, salmon, sardines, arugula, spinach, kelp, bone marrow and broth, and citrus fruits. High Quality Gluten Free Calcium When you have the need for calcium supplementation, you have to be careful not to take excessive calcium without magnesium, because doing so can contribute to magnesium deficiency. Additionally, it is important to ensure that your vitamin D levels are normal as calcium absorption is low when vitamin D is deficient. But as technology to measure for vitamin D became affordable, more studies were conducted. According to Dr. Michael Holick, who is one of the leading vitamin D researchers, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 32% of adults and children in the US were vitamin D deficient. That’s a pretty high number; so for that reason alone, it’s important that you look for signs of vitamin D deficiency. With more research being conducted, Holick believes that about 50% of the general population may be at risk of vitamin D deficiency. The only way to know for sure if you are vitamin D deficient is by a blood test. But the signs and symptoms that come along with this deficiency could be helpful as well. There are certain people who are more at risk for developing a vitamin D deficiency. These people include the elderly, those who have milk allergies, those who have darker skin, or those who follow a vegan diet. Symptoms associated with vitamin D deficiency include an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, asthma in children, cognitive impairment in seniors, and more. It is extremely important to get a sufficient amount of vitamin D in order to avoid these health risks. If you are not exposed to the sun very often and have a strict diet which doesn't incorporate many foods which are rich in vitamin D, it may be time to start talking to your doctor about the best types of supplements you should be taking for vitamin D, and how many or how often you should be taking them.
