The normal stomach acid should be at a pH of 1-3. This is essential for the stomach to release bile. Bile helps to absorb minerals and vitamins from the foods that we eat. If the acid in the stomach is low, you can get GERD or acid reflux. Low sodium diets can cause acid reflux. Dr. Berg explains about the different vitamins and their importance, such as low Vitamin A can cause night blindness, dry skin, dry throat, acnea. Vitamin D controls the absorption of calcium which helps in bone and muscle contraction, cellular communication, improves immune system. This can cause problems with the functioning of your body, and poor health.Ways to resolve a vitamin deficiency include eating a healthy and balanced diet and taking supplements. However, if you are on medication you could also suffer from a vitamin deficiency. Clinical nutritionist, Dr Josh Axe, says that men taking medication for high blood pressure and diabetes should take vitamin B12 supplements to avoid a vitamin deficiency. “Studies show that most men usually consume the daily B12 they need from eating things like beef, poultry and eggs,” he says online. “But, they often have trouble with proper absorption of vitamin B12 due to medication use, especially older men taking several prescriptions at once. “Medications like acid-blocking drugs and those used to manage blood pressure or diabetes can interfere with how B12 is metabolised by the body. “This is a problem considering vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to fatigue and central nervous system problems. ”The NHS warns that vitamin B12 is found largely in fish, meat and dairy products, rather than fruit, vegetables and grains. A deficiency of B12 causes the body to produce abnormally large red blood cells that can’t function normally. Symptoms include extreme tiredness, lack of energy, sore and red tongue and mouth ulcers, among others, according to the NHS. “Medication can cause vitamin B12 deficiency,” says the NHS on its website.“Certain medications, including anticonvulsants and proton pump inhibitors, can affect how much of these vitamins your body absorbs. ”Anticonvulsants are used to treat personality disorders, however, and proton pump inhibitor medication can be used to treat constipation and stomach problems. Some of the benefits of taking vitamin B12 supplements, according to Dr Josh Axe, include improvements to your mood, energy level, memory, heart, skin, hair and digestion. “A vitamin B12 deficiency is thought to be one of the leading nutrient deficiencies in the world. “Because of its wide-reaching roles within the body, a vitamin B12 deficiency can show up in many different negative symptoms, many of which are very noticeable, such as potential chronic fatigue, mood disorders like depression, and chronic stress or feeling run down. “Vitamin B12 can be taken in tablet form, in drops that you place under on the tongue or in oral spray form. “Sometimes seniors do better with drops and oral spray forms of vitamin B12 because they have trouble absorbing the vitamin from the stomach.

In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Research from the University of British Columbia has found that biochemical reactions in brain tissue that cause Alzheimer's disease can start in the womb. According to UPI, the study was based on experiments with genetically engineered mice. Researchers found that a vitamin A deficiency in a fetus or newborn could start the biochemical reaction. Conversely, vitamin A supplements given to newborns could slow the progression of the disease. Mice that were deprived of vitamin A in the womb but were then given a normal amount of the vitamin after birth performed poorly compared to mice that received a normal amount of vitamin A in the womb but were deprived after birth. Dr. Welhong Song is a professor of psychiatry, Canada Research Chair in Alzheimer's disease, and author of the study. In recent episodes Dr. Larson has talked about the importance of the health of the gut microbiome. In the gut, there should be a balance of good and bad bacteria. If there is an imbalance, it can lead to digestive issues, which can, in turn, influence the health of the brain. When the gut microbiome is imbalanced, it can lead to brain dysfunction. There is an important relationship that exists between the gut and the brain. A bidirectional signaling system connects them, whereby, signals from the gut can directly influence the brain, and signals for the brain can influence the health and function of the gut. Therefore, an imbalance in one can cause an imbalance in the other. Imbalances of the microbiome in the gut can come from many things including diet, stress, deficiencies of certain nutrients and medications. A recent study released by the journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics looked at people who were prescribed proton pump inhibitors or PPIs. PPIs are available both over-the-counter and by prescription. Researchers evaluated the effects that PPIs have on the brain and depression. What they found was that when people were prescribed PPIs, they had a significant increase in depression. PPIs directly influence the function and balance of the gut microbiome, and since there is a direct relationship of gut microbiome to brain function, it would make sense that an imbalance in gut microbiome would cause an imbalance in the production of neurotransmitters in the brain like serotonin and dopamine. They also found that people who were prescribed PPIs had an increased chance of nutrient deficiencies. PPIs work by inhibiting the production of stomach acid. Since stomach acid is needed to break down food and separate proteins from vitamins and minerals to be absorbed further down the chain of digestion, if food is not broken down properly, it can lead to absorption issues. Deficiencies of both magnesium and B12 were common in those who took PPIs. Magnesium and B12 are highly important for neurotransmitter and brain function. Researchers concluded that PPIs disrupt the physiological processes that lead to depression. The study showed that there was a direct connection between taking PPIs and depression. Proton pump inhibitors is supposed to be a medication that is taken for acute discomfort not as a long term solution. They might be necessary for the short term, but the conclusion of this recent study confirms that they are not a good remedy long-term. It is easy to see how taking one medication can be a slippery slope to taking a host of them. If you start to take proton pump inhibitors for stomach discomfort, they might help. But, they can start to make you become depressed, which could lead to the doctor prescribing anti-depressants. One medication’s side effects often lead to the patient being prescribed another to undo those side effects, and so on, creating a chain. So, before you use medication to treat your symptoms, you might want to research other alternative options, or you can easily find yourself on a host of various medications that all adversely affect the body in one way or another.
