In this critically important talk, clinical psychologist Julia Rucklidge explores a range of scientific research, including her own, showing the significant role played by nutrition in mental health or illness. Julia J Rucklidge, PhD is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. Originally from Toronto, she did her training in neurobiology (McGill) and Clinical Psychology (University of Calgary). Her interests in nutrition and mental illness grew out of her own research showing poor outcomes for children with significant psychiatric illness despite receiving conventional treatments for their conditions. For the last 6 years, she has been investigating the role of micronutrients in the expression of mental illness, specifically ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety and more recently, stress and PTSD associated with the Canterbury earthquakes. 11 Signs Your Body Needs More Magnesium
Magnesium is a mineral found in many types of foods, it plays an essential role in human DNA production, repair and in maintaining healthy bones, nerves and muscles. Though it is readily available, most Americans do not meet their need for magnesium through their diet. you should consider getting your magnesium level checked if you suffer the following 11 symptoms. 1. Low energy. Magnesium is involved in at least 300 different chemical reactions in our body, and a lot have to do with energy production. A sign of low magnesium can be low energy. 2.Insomnia. If you're having a hard time falling or staying asleep, it may be due to low levels of magnesium, particularly if you are experiencing a lot of stress. Stress hormones increase blood pressure and heart rate, this is partly accomplished by depleting the body of its magnesium If there isn't enough magnesium available for the body to replenish itself, sleeping becomes a problem. 3.Constipation. Bowel movements often slow down without enough magnesium in the body. note that magnesium is the main ingredient in many over-the-counter laxatives. 4.Frequent headaches. Magnesium deficiency lowers serotonin levels, causes blood vessels to constrict and affects neurotransmitter function, all related to headaches -- especially migraines. 50% of migraine sufferers have a magnesium deficiency. 5.Twitching or cramping. Because magnesium plays an important role in muscle relaxation, insufficient intake can result in unintended muscle movement. Without magnesium, our muscles would be in a constant state of contraction 6.Low bone density. Magnesium plays a major role in bone formation, and the majority of the body's magnesium is stored in the bones. People with higher intakes of magnesium have a higher bone mineral density. 7.High blood pressure. Magnesium is very important in maintaining a healthy blood pressure, a deficiency can definitely cause pressure to be too high. Eating foods high in magnesium and other minerals can help prevent high blood pressure in people with prehypertension. 8.Type 2 diabetes. Breaking down blood sugars is another of magnesium's jobs in the human body. People with higher amounts of magnesium in their diets tend to have a lower risk of developing diabetes. Research is ongoing to determine whether magnesium therapy can be used in diabetes treatment. 9.Irregular heartbeat. With low magnesium levels, the heart can have trouble staying in its regular rhythm. doctors will often prescribe magnesium supplements for patients who complain of an irregular heartbeat. 10.Increased sensitivity to noise. Not having enough magnesium curtails its role in stabilizing the nervous system, This often results in hyperflexia, an enhanced startle reflex. And 11. Depression and anxiety. Low levels of magnesium in the brain can affect neurological functions that result in all sorts of problems. Explain GABA and Natural Ways to Increase It
GABA is a neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are produced in the brain that allow the nerve cells to communicate with each other. They have a lot to do with regulating the mood and the different systems of the body. There are two types of neurotransmitters - those that excite things and those that inhibit, or slow down, things. GABA falls into the category of relaxation, or inhibitory, neurotransmitters. So what is GABA, what does it do? GABA is responsible for regulating the body's internal rhythm and repsonible for relaxation and mental focus. If you have a GABA deficiency, then you might experience things in the body like: -- Arrhythmias, abnormal rhythms of the heart -- Over-excitation, in general with your moods -- Insomnia -- Anxiety There are some ways that you can naturally increase your GABA production. First, let's talk about some food things you do. You know I'm a food-as-medicine doctor! Green tea is a great way to increase the production of GABA. If you are tea drinker, load up on some green teas! There's lots of different types green teas - oolong green tea (which also helps with weight loss), rose green tea, hot green tea, cold green tea. I recommend brewing your own green tea. Of course there are a lot of commercial green teas on the market but the most beneficial green tea is the one your brew and prepare yourself. It has the most nutritional value. The second thing you can do is actually take the supplement L-Theanine? L-Theanine is an amino acid that stimulates GABA production in the brain as well. So you can go to your local vitamin shop, or you can order online (one of my favorite sites it www.iherb.com) and you can take the L-Theanine. I do recommend that if you take L-Theanine, that you see your integrative medicine doctor, or holistic doctor, first and make sure there are no other contradictory indication of why you should not take it. The third thing you can do is eat complex carbohydrates. Of course "carbohydrates" in our society has become a dirty word but carbohydrates are not bad. After we eat the carbohydrates, we stimulate the production of this relaxing neurotransmitter and it makes us want to be laid back, relaxed, and go to sleep. So yes, you can eat carbohydrates, but here is the pitfall. We say, "Oh I'm stressed out. I'm going to go eat some pasta."You want to think about what healthy complex carbohydrates you can eat. Beans, lentils, garbanzos, even bananas - these are carbohydrates that are good for you, rather than going to pasta or bread and eating those out of moderation. So that's where we fall into the pitfall of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are not totally bad for you, they can create a state of relaxation for you, if you do them in moderation and eat the healthy ones. There are a couple of other foods that you can think about snacking on to help release GABA in the brain - bananas, walnuts, almonds, broccoli (so go ahead and make that broccoli and brown rice casserole), lentils, oats and other whole grains that are healthy like quinoa and brown rice. All of these things increase GABA in the brain and there are also know to increase serotonin in the brain, too. They promote relaxation, promote an elevate (a good) mood, and they are good for you.

Magnesium deficiency is a widespread problem and some estimates suggest that over 90% of us are deficient. Studies have also been done to look at how stress levels affect magnesium. The results showed that during periods of high stress, magnesium is often used up by the body, leaving us even more depleted. Another study in France, of 264 patients with generalized anxiety disorder, found that a significant number of men and women reported improvements on a magnesium regimen. Researchers have also suggested that supplementing with magnesium may have a positive effect on depression as well, even if not deficient in it. Magnesium counters stress by stimulating GABA receptors in the brain. GABA is a primary inhibitory neurotransmitter, one that slows down excessive and racing thoughts. When GABA is low, your brain gets stuck in the “on” position and it becomes impossible to relax. Magnesium also reduces stress hormones in the body and prevents them from entering the brain. If you have high levels of stress hormones then anxiety is right around the corner waiting for you. Another way magnesium helps with anxiety is by keeping our blood sugar stable. Everytime the blood sugar drops too fast the adrenal glands secrete a dose of adrenaline and that, let me tell you, is the last thing we want if we are prone to anxiety. Magnesium is a required element of muscle relaxation, and without it our muscles would be in a constant state of contraction. Think of magnesium as ​the muscle and mind ​ relaxation mineral. Anything that is tight, irritable, crampy, and stiff — whether it is a body part or a irritable brain — is a sign of magnesium deficiency. In other words magnesium helps everything relax. Muscles, nerves, brain, thoughts and the whole system. So what is the best magnesium supplement for anxiety and depression kind of and what should you put in your shopping cart the next time you’re out grocery shopping? Best magnesium supplement for anxiety/What is the best form of magnesium for anxiety: Well, to start with you want to avoid anything that has magnesium oxide written on it. Unfortunately magnesium oxide is the most common form of magnesium sold in pharmacies, and it possesses a very poor absorption rate. Also if you see magnesium glutamate, aspartate and sulfate then do NOT buy those. 5 Herbs and supplements for anxiety #anxiety

Today I'm bringing you another research study that shows herbs can be effective for the treatment of anxiety. The study was carried out in 2010, and published in the Nutrition Journal. Study link: http://nutritionj.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1475-2891-9-42 Anxiety affects millions of people throughout the world, and if you're suffering anxiety, I hope you find this video useful because it's our alternatives to medications. Anxiety is a constant state of worry where you can't relax, you're always on alert, always thinking so many negative is gonna happen, and that negative thinking is controlling you and controlling your behaviour. The problem of Benzodiazepines is they come with many unwanted side effects such as suicidal ideation, decreased alertness and drowsiness, sexual dysfunction, and dependence. Benzodiazepines are only supposed to be subscribed for four weeks. Many doctors allow their patients to go on months or allowing repeat prescription for months on end, even years. People become dependent on them, and sometimes they end up on other drugs at the same time to deal with the side effects of the Benzodiazepines. Many people are now turning to alternatives such as herbal medicine and natural treatments for the treatment of anxiety as the evidence base increases, and as people get tired of the Benzodiazepines, their ineffectiveness, or their unwanted side effects. The first herb was passion flower, and passion flower was found in the evidence to be as effective as Benzodiazepines in the treatment of anxiety. I have a video in my channel if you want to check it out on passion flower where I went more depth on the power of passion flower in the treatment of anxiety. Number two is kava. Kava is a drink that's prepared from the plant, piper methysticum. It's used in many cultures because it's known for its effectiveness in reducing restlessness, anxiety, and nervous tension. Third one, they found evidence for Saint John's wort. Saint John's wort has been widely studied. Saint John's wort has been used as a medicine for centuries because of its known effect on nervous conditions such as stress, anxiety, insomnia, and nervousness. In Germany, it's widely used and prescribed by doctors. It's licenced for the use of anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Caution on Saint John's wort as it does interfere with other med so if you are on any medications, always consult with your doctor. Number four is lysine. It's an amino acid that influences the neurotransmitters involved in regulating stress and anxiety. And number five is magnesium. Magnesium is a positively charged ion that is involved in many of the molecular functions that influence the body's response to stress and anxiety so if you are low on magnesium, it's possible that by increasing your intake of magnesium through natural foods, you might also have tackled your anxiety. Your body sees a Threat, maybe its real danger, maybe it’s too much work 2. Neurons in the hypothalamus (region of the brain responsible for many crucial aspects of our body function – secrete a hormone called CRH, 3. This CRH travels to the anterior pituitary gland, which secretes another hormone that ultimately tells the adrenal glands to produce the sometimes dreaded CORTISOL. Cortisol: -plays a key role in the central nervous system It’s heavily involved in emotion, but also involved in keeping you awake, alert, and performing at your very best in a physical and sometimes mental state. Under normal situations, this stress response will fade away over time, but with chronic stress, elevated concentrations of cortisol lead to inflammation, tissue damage and dysregulation of biological systems which can cause a myriad of problems, weight gain being one of them. Ultimately, we cannot perform at our best if we have constant elevated cortisol levels. Elevated cortisol levels can alter immune system responses and suppress the digestive system and growth processes which not only affects our guts, but it ultimately affects our brains too. 1. Increase your Omega 3 Fatty Acid Intake -In the US, we suffer from a dramatic deficiency of Omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are found in foods such as fish, flax seed, grass fed meats or in supplements like fish oil, krill oil, or calamarine oil. Research has shown that consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce your levels of cortisol, and thus reduce your biological response to stress. Omega 3s will also reduce some of the inflammatory damage that has been caused by excess inflammation in the first place. That is just one of the benefits of reducing inflammation and increasing the amount of omega 3’s within your diet. Remember that cortisol and stress get a bad rap, but we have to remember that they are necessary to survival and aren’t going to hurt you unless you begin to chronically perceive them that way. All the fish oil in the world won’t change the stress that is caused by STRESSING about being stressed A 2010 study by the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found decreased cortisol levels along with reduced fat mass and increased lean mass after adults underwent six weeks of fish oil supplementation (6). A healthier body impacts every moment of your day, leaving you with more energy to tackle your myriad of challenges. A study by Molecular Nutrition and Food Research conducted a study with subjects (abstinent alcoholics) undergoing three weeks of supplementation of 60 mg/day of fish oil and found a reduction in the cortisol basal levels throughout the day following supplementation. Physical fitness is generally achieved through proper nutrition, moderate-vigorous physical exercise, and sufficient rest. Before the industrial revolution, fitness was defined as the capacity to carry out the day’s activities without undue fatigue. However, with automation and changes in lifestyles physical fitness is now considered a measure of the body's ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, to be healthy, to resist hypokinetic diseases, and to meet emergency situations. Fitness is defined as the quality or state of being fit. Around 1950, perhaps consistent with the Industrial Revolution and the treatise of World War II, the term "fitness" increased in western vernacular by a factor of ten. Modern definition of fitness describe either a person or machine's ability to perform a specific function or a holistic definition of human adaptability to cope with various situations. This has led to an interrelation of human fitness and attractiveness which has mobilized global fitness and fitness equipment industries. Regarding specific function, fitness is attributed to person who possess significant aerobic or anaerobic ability, i.e. strength or endurance. A holistic definition of fitness is described by Greg Glassman in the CrossFit journal as an increased work capacity across broad times and modal domains; mastery of several attributes of fitness including strength, endurance, power, speed, balance and coordination and being able to improve the amount of work done in a given time with any of these domains. A well rounded fitness program will improve a person in all aspects of fitness, rather than one, such as only cardio/respiratory endurance or only weight training. A comprehensive fitness program tailored to an individual typically focuses on one or more specific skills, and on age- or health-related needs such as bone health. Many sources also cite mental, social and emotional health as an important part of overall fitness. This is often presented in textbooks as a triangle made up of three points, which represent physical, emotional, and mental fitness. Physical fitness can also prevent or treat many chronic health conditions brought on by unhealthy lifestyle or aging. Working out can also help some people sleep better and possibly alleviate some mood disorders in certain individuals.📝

It is also called Brahmi ( along with it's companion Gotu kola). Dale Bredesen, in The End of Alzheimer's, says it improves cholinergic function. Others say it is an antioxidant that passes the blood/brain barrier. Standard use is 300 mg of the active ingredient bacocides. The science is not incredibly strong. But there are a few well-designed, but underpowered (too few subjects). If you investigate the science, you will likely see the Portland study. It was, like the others, underpowered, with 54 total participants. They did see decreased depression and anxiety and improved cognition using objective studies. P values were low, as would be expected with such small numbers. About Dr. Brewer - Dr. Brewer started as an Emergency Doctor. After seeing too many patients coming in dead from early heart attacks, he went to Johns Hopkins to learn Preventive Medicine. He went on to run the post-graduate training program (residency) in Preventive Medicine at Hopkins. Off Paper – Episode 3: Treating Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders: When Is It Being Done Right? Chronic substance use and mental health disorders are common problems for individuals in the criminal justice system. Alone or together, and sometimes in conjunction with other risk factors, these disorders can drive behavior that results in violation of supervision conditions or even in new criminal conduct. To deal with these problems, probation and pretrial offices services offices in the nation’s 94 U.S. district courts maintain contracts with treatment providers. Sometimes these offices can also supplement contract services with community-based treatment. But what does good treatment look like? How should treatment providers be evaluated? How can probation and pretrial services offices ensure that individuals on community supervision are receiving appropriate, high-quality care? What outcomes should be expected from treatment providers? And, finally, are there proven practices criminal justice professionals can use to improve treatment outcomes? In this episode of Off Paper, Dr. Peter Luongo answers these questions and talks about his more than thirty years researching, making policy, and treating individuals with substance use and mental health disorders in the criminal justice system. Dr. Luongo, Executive Director of the Institute for Research, Education and Training in Addictions (IRETA), has been a trainer and clinical consultant for the federal courts since 2011. Prior to that he served under three governors as director of Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration. Dr. Luongo has served as a faculty associate at Johns Hopkins University, and, in 2015, he was nominated and elected a Class A Trustee of the General Services Board of Alcoholics Anonymous.
