The five minute version of this lesson planning video is available if you wish to have a quick view of how I lesson plan for a unit study or main lesson block. https://youtu.be/wZloLAcpDrs If you want the real time, full-of-distractions, lesson planning process, check this out. Over the course of one week, I lesson planned a unit that's only scheduled for two weeks! At this rate, I'll be done with the unit before we finish lesson planning! In this lesson planning vlog, I walk you through the sometimes slow process of lesson planning for a unit study. This process is different than using a curriculum. When using a curriculum with everything lesson scheduled, you can plug in a lesson each day, collect your material and hopefully call it done. When doing a unit study, you need time to think about the lessons you'll do and how long you plan to spend on the unit. You'll want to collect your resources and projects and make sure you have the materials you need for your lessons. In this case, I am planning a lot of hands on projects and artistic lessons. We won't have much writing nor a main lesson book. Instead, we'll have lots of hands on projects, reading aloud and discussing the content we've read or the projects we've done. For that reason, I needed some time to figure it out. While some of the process is slow, the thinking things through part, once that's decided, the rest falls into place rather quickly. Initially, I wasn't sure what I wanted to cover during this unit. It could have gone in a number of different directions from studying various types of trees, forests, plants or biomes. I settled on a couple lessons on the rainforest with the remainder of the time focusing on the remaining lessons from our Botany Main Lesson block from the previous year. I'm happy with this approach because I really wished we could have finished the lessons we started last year. We completed nearly all of the main lesson block, but stopped short of some really good lessons. Now that we are dedicating a couple weeks to this unit (which includes more than those few remaining lessons), I feel we can give this unit justice. There are some lessons that may take a little thinking through like the form drawing or geometry lesson, but I think we can make it work, even if we take three weeks to do it. You can check out our Botany main lesson block here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRkqpuY8erY&list=PLJxUV0rOnlxw3-SjvfjdPrLIq5-5OoRoo Lessons for this unit can be found in this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3ndSQwIO0w&list=PLJxUV0rOnlxwutGiZOzuqY_og8heg6WZt To access the lesson plans for this unit, you can check the blog post for this video: https://www.pepperandpine.com/homeschool-lesson-planning-tutorial/ The Lesson Plans for this mini unit on Trees and Plants is available for you. I've approached the lesson plans for this unit differently from other lesson plans in that there are no days or dates assigned to the lessons and reading passages. There isn't even a real order to the lesson either. This isn't always possible as most of the time one lesson precedes another naturally and provides information that's necessary before moving on. But in this case, there's a lot of flexibility. I've included a lot of hands on projects and activities for this unit. Since we'll observe the progress over a long period of time, we got started on those first before I was even done lesson planning. We spent a whole day out in the garden doing the majority of the garden work. We'll spend the rest of the unit and most of the summer following up on those projects.  You can see what we're up to on a daily basis by finding me on Instagram where you can see the day to day lessons for this unit and other lessons we're doing in our homeschool. Curious how I teach our main lessons for our Waldorf Botany Main Lesson Block? It's actually never the same each time. Sometimes we begin with the written portion, sometimes with the art portion, but more often, it begins with an oral narration on my part or a reading from a 'living' book (refer to Charlotte Mason for explanation on Living Books). While working through lesson 4 of our Botany Main Lesson curriculum, I decided to add an extra art sample to our main lesson books. Today's lesson is how we added a watercolor sample of seaweed to accompany the main lesson block. We chose to watercolor local varieties of seaweed for local significance as well as significance to the curriculum. We watercolored giant sea kelp as we live off the coast of California, and this is a variety we are both familiar with as well as see often when at the beach. I chose watercolors because seaweed grow in water, and I thought the ethereal look of watercolors would complement the ethereal look of seaweed under water. This lesson is about algae with seaweed being a marine algae. We are now exploring plants that represent 'part' of the complete plant with seaweed being a 'leaf' plant with no true roots or flowers or fruit. Seaweed collapses if taken out of the water, yet they are similar to the tall trees in a forest as seaweed often provides a safe haven for other plants and sea animals. Though they have no true roots, they have a holdfast which keeps the seaweed attached to rocks but takes in no nutrients. Those are absorbed throughout the whole plant. Check out the complete playlist for our Botany Main Lesson Block: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRkqpuY8erY&list=PLJxUV0rOnlxw3-SjvfjdPrLIq5-5OoRoo To see the rest of the 5th grade Waldorf curriculum from Live-Education, click here: https://www.live-education.com/fifth-grade/ Share pics of your projects with me! https://twitter.com/PepperandPine https://www.instagram.com/pepperandpine/ https://www.facebook.com/pepperandpine https://www.pepperandpine.com

7 Lessons I've Learned From Weight Loss Failures
Take Dr. Berg's Free Keto Mini-Course: http://pxlme.me/-i717vtY or go here: https://www.drberg.com/how-to-do-ketosis Download Keto Essentials https://m.me/drericberg?ref=w2128577 Dr. Berg talks about the 7 lessons he learned from weight loss failures from his practice of 25 years and worked with 40,000 people. 1. Fruit – Don’t use fruit if you are trying to lose weight and someone who has slow metabolism. Even small amounts of fruit can block a lot of fat burning. 2. Snacks – Snacking increases insulin because every time you eat, you trigger insulin. Cutting out snacks creates huge benefits. 3. 2 weeks – low protein (Liver enhancement) or no protein – would cause a lot of blood sugar issues because our bodies need amino acids to rebuild and repair. Cutting it out too low or not enough will cause problems like hair loss, loss of muscle, etc. 4. “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” – It screws up and break the all night fasting. Push yourself to eat closer to lunch and not eat until you’re hungry and eventually skip the breakfast. 5. Low Fat (Lean Protein) – Fat is very important to satisfy the appetite to go into one meal to another. It is the only macronutrient that doesn’t trigger insulin – the more the pure the fat is the lower the influence it has to insulin. 6. History – Clue (Ignoring – Focusing more in diving into the process directly and not ignoring the clues. 7. Omitting Getting Healthy First – It is not lose weight to get healthy, it is getting healthy first then lose the weight. Focus on the health indicators: energy level, cravings gone, stress level better. Hey guys in this video we are gonna talk about the 7 lessons that I've learned from many weight loss failures. Now, I have been in practice for 29 years worked on about 40,000 different people, so I had a lot of interaction with people and you learn so much from your client. It is incredible. So i guess that's why you call it a practice so you are practicing and there are patients and you have a waiting room. But I had a great opportunity to find out what works and what doesn't work. So I am gonna go through the 7 lessons that I've learned. Let's start with number 1, fruit. Here's the lesson I learned about fruit, you don't wanna use fruit if you are trying to help people lose weight. Now I am talking about someone with the slow metabolism, I pretty much approach everyone from a viewpoint that have a slow metabolism. Why do we do that? Because we get results in every type of case. But if you are operating of this idea that everyone has a good metabolism, they don't have insulin resistance, your results are gonna be very very poor. Tiny bit of fruit could block a lot of fat burning for a day or two. Lesson number 2, snacks. I used to recommend so called healthy snacks, I used to consume healthy snacks between meals and definitely at night. That time, I thought it was okay because I thought it was healthy it wasn't junk food. But I found out through trial and error that that's a really bad advice because the snacking increases insulin just because every time you eat you trigger insulin and this data is right in the guidance physiology. I must have missed it when I originally study that but the point is when you cut out.. I feel like we are dragging our feet as the school year unofficially draws to an end. Our school year officially ended May 22, 2018, but as got a late start, starting almost a month after our official start date of August 15th, I decided to homeschool through Ramadan to make up for lost time and also because I didn't want to run around doing summer activities during Ramadan and also because in Southern California, June isn't such a hot summery month. In fact, our June weather is more like what you'd expect our January weather to be. So it's almost a win win to homeschool in June and during Ramadan. The downside is that mentally, we're not all there! We just slow down mentally at this time and just start to be done. For those reasons, these last remaining lessons in our Botany Main Lesson Block are somewhat straightforward without a lot of bells and whistles. We'll do a simple watercolor and talk about the content of the lesson either before or after we watercolor. We may or may not label the watercolor and the narration may or may not happen. To help my son along with the narration, I might write something and have him copy or I'll dictate it to him if he's reluctant to write something on his own. Today's lesson makes use of the ABC's of Nature and Botanicum. We are also using our Live Education Waldorf curriculum for the Botany Main Lesson Block as the curriculum for this unit. This lesson was part of our continuing Botany Main Lesson Block which we started in the spring of 2017. We are up to grasses and grains and while we haven't yet done the content part of this lesson, this watercoloring came first as it sometimes does. I initially intended to do both kinds of wheat on the same sheet, but decided against it. On one side is the Emmer Wheat and on the other side (next lesson), is the bread wheat. Check out the first part of this lesson on wheat: https://youtu.be/BuxoV3Yh0yA Check out the botany lesson on corn: https://youtu.be/4n0yXw8QxL4 You can see the rest of our Botany Main Lesson Block here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRkqpuY8erY&list=PLJxUV0rOnlxw3-SjvfjdPrLIq5-5OoRoo For more real time lessons, check out this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDcp6MHX-QQ&list=PLJxUV0rOnlxykzIN5MyKSY923kOftz8hN Get more info at the blog post that accompanies this video. 13 Years Living Off the Land - Man Shares REAL Homestead Experience
Peter from TreeEater Farm & Nursery (http://treeeaternursery.com/) in BC shares the challenges and lessons learned from his experience earning a living off the land for 13 years with his partner Magdalene. Peter moved to a piece of land in British Columbia's Gulf Islands as an idealistic 22-year old who wanted to save the world and reduce his environmental footprint by growing his own food, building his own shelter, and producing his own fibres for clothes. Magdalene joined him a few years later. To make this homesteading project financially viable, the couple has had to experiment with different revenue streams, including community supported agriculture (CSA) vegetable box programs, hand forged tools, meat animals, dairy cows, and selling fruit and nut trees, as well as plenty of off-farm work as well. After a steep and labour-intensive learning curve, Peter has realized that living off the land can be very expensive, that it can be difficult to earn an income from agricultural products — especially if your land isn't situated in an area with a market for your product nearby, and that living off the land requires a lot of infrastructure & maintenance — all of which costs time and money. And they aren't even trying to be off grid. It was refreshing to get such an honest look behind the scenes of what appears to be a utopian lifestyle: living in a hand built timber frame home with a cozy wood stove, and eating fruit and nuts from your own island orchard's trees, and to know there's quite a big financial and physical struggle to make it all happen.
