We all have fat converting enzymes, but the amount of them drastically increases when first entering keto - the supply of glucose falls before the body has adapted to burning fat for fuel. Hypoglycemia occurs because the body quickly burns through stored sugars and hasn’t yet learned to burn fat, leaving you with an energy deficit* Going from little fat a day to eating all the fat you can consume results in people’s body’s not being able to digest all the fat right away, this leaves a large portion of fat undigested and built up and makes some people understandably nauseated. The liver and gallbladder need time to up-regulate the number of fat-burning enzymes to burn larger amounts of fat efficiently. Loss of Minerals/Electrolytes: When we restrict carbohydrates, we remove from our diet the one macronutrient that triggers the most insulin release. While insulin is letting the cells know that there is excess energy, it also triggers the kidneys to hold onto sodium and water. Together, glycogen loss and low insulin levels cause enough water and sodium to cause dizziness, nausea, cramping, headaches, and gastrointestinal issues Increase Salt and Mineral Intake: When you go low carb, your insulin levels will tend to go down, which in turn means you don’t hold on to as much sodium as before. Getting Headaches When Doing Keto and Intermittent Fasting?

This is a hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) situation, your cells have not yet adapted to running on ketones. The brain is the first organ affected by low blood sugars because it depends on glucose. We are going to talk about headaches in a relationship to doing Keto and Intermittent Fasting. This is really a hypoglycemic type of issue or the low blood sugar situation, your cells have not yet adapted to running on ketones, and you’re still running on glucose. If you implement intermittent fasting and you try to go in a long period of time, it drops the sugar. The problem is that low blood sugars add a tremendous amount of stress to the brain, central nervous system and the nerves overall. In fact, the brain is the first organ to be affected by low blood sugars because they depend on glucose. There is an alternative fuel called ketones but if you don’t know how to do it you are going to run in glucose and if you implement intermittent fasting, you are gonna crash and burn. Headaches are very common symptoms of hypoglycemia but to really know if your headaches are really connected to blood sugars, all you have to do as soon as you start getting headaches is to start to consume some protein because that should instantly improve your headaches and if it doesn’t then it could be another source. The solution to the headaches is to realize that it is a blood sugar thing and go into this more gradually. For example you are going this and eating twice a day and you are getting headaches, add another meal because you are not ready to go to 2 meals a day. If you are doing 3 meals a day maybe you might really need to add more protein. But again here’s the problem, medically speaking what they’ll do to hypoglycemia is they tell you to add more snacks like 5 to 6 meals a day which is a big mistake even though you’ll feel better, you’ll never correct the problem. You might go “wow, I had some fruit, protein, and I feel better” but if you are not working towards running your body on ketones you are still going to have the blood sugar situation because as soon as you eat, you are going to spike the insulin, it is gonna come down. Since the spotlight was placed squarely on thyroid issues, so many people have been “self diagnosing” themselves with hypothyroidism. First off, although I do understand thyroid health, I don’t claim to be an expert on thyroid health. But the question I want to highlight today is this. If you’re struggling with losing weight, is it because you have hypothyroidism, or are you just misled with the wrong workouts and poor nutrition advice? Don’t get me wrong, thyroid health is definitely real. However, the problem is many people are self diagnosing themselves with hypothyroidism, rather than getting a proper diagnosis from their health care provider. The goal of this video is to raise awareness to seek help. Where is the Thyroid located? The thyroid is a gland located at the front of your neck. It produces the T3 and T4 hormones that are responsible for regulating many responsibilities of your metabolism, including weight gain and weight loss, cell growth, and reproductive function. What is Hypothyroidism? Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid hormones don’t function properly, thus causing a slow thyroid. Symptoms of Hypothyroidism: Weight gain is often the most talked about symptom of hypothyroidism. People suffering from hypothyroidism may also have the following symptoms: - Low body temperature including cold hands and feet - Slow heart rate - Constipation - Achy joints - Flaky, dry, and rough skin - Thick swollen tongue - Puffy swelling under the eyes - Thinning, dry, brittle hair and hair loss - Consistent fatigue Many of these symptoms of hypothyroidism may be linked to other medical conditions or could just be the cause of poor nutrition. Therefore, it’s always important to speak to your health care provider for a proper diagnosis. And that’s one of the points I want to make. Talk to a specialist. Even Jessica and I work with a Naturopathic Medical Doctor on an ongoing basis to keep track of our blood test results. TSH Levels Your health care specialist can take a blood test to check your TSH levels, which stands for thyroid stimulating hormone. TSH is secreted from the pituitary gland in the brain and communicates to your thyroid to produce T3 and T4 hormones. If you’re not producing enough T3 & T4, your TSH levels will come back elevated. Although the range for “Normal” TSH range of 0.5-5.0 can be misleading, typically levels over 2.5 could potentially be early signs of hypothyroidism. Again, your health care specialist can help you with this. Mild thyroid failure could include deficiencies in nutrients selenium and iodine, as they are important for thyroid function. How common is Hypothyroidism? Latest research shows more than 12% of the US population will develop a thyroid issue in their lifetime. However, as mentioned earlier, before you give up on your workouts and nutrition and just blame your weight gain on hypothyroidism, get a proper diagnosis first. Persistent Widespread Body Pain This is one of the main symptoms of fibromyalgia. People with fibromyalgia suffer a persistent body ache that is spread out around 18 specific parts of the body. These body parts may be sore when touched or lightly pressed upon. Patients of fibromyalgia have chronic widespread pain and report about 11 to 18 tender body points, according to a 2007 study published in the Journal of Rheumatology. Although the intensity of pain varies from person to person, it is generally described as a shooting muscular pain. 2. Fatigue Persistent fatigue is another key symptom of fibromyalgia and is the second most common one. Fatigue is one of the most common complaints among fibromyalgia patients, but it has received less attention than chronic body pain, according to a 2013 study published in Arthritis Research and Therapy and fibromyalgia and muscle cramps fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. 3. Sleep Disturbances People with fibromyalgia have trouble falling asleep, and when they do, they have trouble maintaining sound sleep and wake up feeling unrefreshed and low on energy. Non-restorative sleep, thus, is another classic symptom of fibromyalgia, and clinical sleep studies also reveal that fibromyalgia patients report erratic rhythms characteristic of disturbed sleep, according to a 2015 study published in Nature Reviews Rheumatology. In fibromyalgia patients, fibromyalgia and sleep ,bearing the pain and non-restorative sleep combo is a Herculean trial. On the one hand, pain inhibits sleep, and on the other hand lack of sleep increases pain. 4. Headaches Headaches are a common symptom, occurring in about half of patients of fibromyalgia, according to a 2005 study published in Clinical Rheumatology. Out of 100 fibromyalgia patients, 76 percent reported headaches as a commonly occurring symptom, with 84 percent reporting intense headaches and 63 percent experiencing migraines, the study further notes. Chronic migraines (acute pain on one side of the head, often accompanied by nausea and an aversion to bright lights and loud noise) and chronic tension-type (regular) headaches are commonly symptoms of fibromyalgia. 5. Depression & Anxiety Fibromyalgia patients may have a hard time keeping their spirits high. In fact, patients of fibromyalgia are at a significantly higher risk of becoming depressed, and depressed people are at a higher risk of developing fibromyalgia, according to a 2015 study published in The Journal of Pain. Depression in fibromyalgia patients poses a serious risk of intensifying other symptoms, as a depressed person will find it harder to cope with other struggles. It can seriously wreck one’s mental well-being and make the person feel hopeless and like a victim of the disease. 6. Sensory Overload People suffering from fibromyalgia are often sensitive to cold temperatures, noise, bright light, and movement. Adrenal fatigue occurs when your adrenal glands aren’t able to produce enough of certain hormones, such as norepinephrine, cortisol and DHEA, which allow you to respond to the conditions of your daily life in healthy and flexible ways. Simply put, the theory behind adrenal fatigue is that your adrenal glands are unable to keep pace with the demands of perpetual fight-or-flight arousal. As a result, they can't produce quite enough of the hormones you need to feel good (1) So, What are Your Adrenal Glands? Located at the top of each kidney, the adrenal glands are two, triangular-shaped organs that measure about 1.5 inches in height and 3 inches in length They are also known as your body’s shock absorbers - produce hormones that help the body control blood sugar, react to stressors like a major illness or injury, and regulate blood pressure. Cause(s) of Adrenal Fatigue Adrenal fatigue is caused when your adrenal glands cannot cope due to you being overly stressed – basically, the main cause is stress The adrenal glands are an essential part of your body's responses to any kind of physical, emotional or psychological stress. Many different types of stress can cause adrenal fatigue. Examples of physical stress include any severe or recurrent infection or illness, having an operation, poor diet or a severe injury. An emotional or psychological stress may be caused by many situations, including relationship, family or work difficulties. (3) However, there are 3 specific hormones that can be a cause of adrenal fatigue: Norepinephrine Also called adrenaline is commonly thought of as the fight-or-flight hormone. It’s produced when something is (or you think it is) threatening. This hormone makes your heart pound, your blood rush to your heart and large muscle groups, your pupils widen, your brain sharpens, and your tolerance for pain increase—basically, it prepares you for battle. Cortisol Cortisol increases your appetite and energy level while toning down your immune system’s allergic and inflammatory responses. This hormone stimulates the storage and release of energy in the body, helps the body resist the stressful effects of infections, trauma, and temperature extremes, and helps you maintain stable emotions. Ideally, cortisol is released into the system only on an occasional basis, rather than in response to chronic stress. If cortisol levels become too high for too long, they may have undesirable side effects, including muscle wasting, kidney damage, fluid retention, spiking blood sugar levels, weight gain, and increased vulnerability to bacteria, etc. Solutions Rid the diet of excess sugar and processed grains These are very hard on the adrenal glands. Eating excess sugar/starches will cause blood sugar to spike and insulin to come to the rescue due to excess glucose in the bloodstream. Blood sugar then drops or plummets, causing the adrenals to work to bring levels back up. When you are suffering from fatigued adrenal glands, cortisol levels drop and make it difficult to maintain normal blood sugar levels. People with adrenal fatigue tend to have low blood sugar.
