For those people who are trying to lose weight in the belly, and have been doing lots of past dieting and created a slow metabolism - you need to extend your fast longer and longer. (Without Dieting) Why do some people eat a lot but never gain weight? 'Metabolism' is the reason why they can eat everything without gaining weight, while others eat less and still gain weight. WHAT IS METABOLISM? Metabolism is the process by which food is broken down to release energy. Your metabolic rate reflects how much energy your body requires to carry out its basic functions like breathing, eating, sleeping, digesting food and more. If your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is high, you burn more calories, even while resting. Your metabolism is determined by multiple factors, including genetics, age, gender, thyroid problems and hormone levels. Women have a slower metabolism than men because women naturally have a higher body fat percentage. LIFESTYLE RELATED REASONS FOR SLOW METABOLISM: - Lack of exercise - Low muscle mass - Irregular eating habits - Eating too much fat - Crash dieting - Protein deficiency - Too much alcohol - Stress and lack of sleep HOW TO INCREASE YOUR METABOLISM? 'Increasing the metabolism' is the holy grail of weight watchers. It is a quick, safe, healthy, natural and effective way to permanent fat loss. Here's how you can do it: (1) Start Weight Training - BMR is much higher in people with more muscle. - The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn even when you are at rest. - Every pound of muscle uses about 6 calories a day, just to sustain itself, while each pound of fat burns only 2 calories. - So start lifting weights and build muscles in order to improve your metabolism. (2) Add HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) to Weight Training - Do 30 minutes Run-Walk workout: Walk for 2 minutes then run for 1 minute. Keep doing this for 30 minutes. - Some other HIIT activities are sprint intervals, treadmill intervals, kick boxing, jump rope, resistance sprints, football and tennis. - HIIT burns more calories in short period of time and improves your BMR. (3) Eat Every 2-3 Hours - Each time you eat, you stimulate your metabolism for a short period of time, which means that the more often you eat, the more you will increase your metabolism. - Eating small meals every 2 to 3 hours feeds muscle and burns fat. - Frequent eating doesn't mean eating junk food. - Make each mini-meal complete with a serving of vegetables and a healthy source of protein. (4) Eat More Protein - Include healthy sources of protein in your meals such as lentils (Indian dal), whey protein, spinach (palak), chickpeas (channa), kidney beans (rajma), broccoli, cheese, paneer, soybeans, yogurt, milk, lean beef, turkey, fish and egg whites. - It helps you build muscles. (5) Eat Metabolism Boosters - Eat a tablespoon of chili and pepper in your food to increase your metabolism. - Add ginger in food to speed up the body's digestion process. - Have a green tea 3-5 times a day. It can burn up to 80 extra calories without any effort. WHAT YOU SHOULD AVOID? (1) Crash Dieting The worst thing you can do to your metabolism is 'starve yourself'. Although crash diets may help you lose weight, but you will lose muscles mass as well. The lower your muscle mass, the slower your metabolism. (w/ Dr. Cabral)… Can your metabolism slow down? Specifically, can your metabolism slow down while intermittent fasting? We talk about reducing calories, we talk about changing how we eat. Does it actually affect the thyroid to the point where metabolism slows down? To help me with this question I've got one of the leading experts in the world on metabolism and the thyroid, Dr. Stephen Cabral. Thank you for having me. I'm a board-certified naturopathic doctor, and I specialize in Ayurvedic and functional medicine, working on bio-individuality as our basis point for how to work with each individual wellness client or patient that comes into our center. When we're talking about intermittent fasting, we're always talking about, is it good, yes or no, and then, there's a lot of gray area in between. My job is to say, "Okay, what are your goals?" If your goal is to be healthier, well, intermittent fasting should be a part of that. Anti-aging? Intermittent should be a part of that, and also body transformation. We know that from the research it can help all of those things, but at what point does it become detrimental? For me, it's looking at lab testing. I don't know if you have a different specific outlook on that, I mean like physical signs and symptoms. Whereas I might look at that as well, but let's say, "Okay, let's not even guess. Let's get directly into testing to say yes or no, this is affecting you negatively." If so, how can we treat that to allow you to do intermittent fasting, but maybe not for the same time window? Maybe not for seven days a week, maybe it's a couple days a week. We can get into that today as well. Definitely. One of the reasons I wanted to do this video is because there's so many just conflicting videos out there. People that have actually done videos directly, I shouldn't say targeting me, but calling me out on my strategy in terms of wanting to only fast a few days per week, saying it's wrong, saying it's right. The thing is, is at the end of it of all of this, before we go into any detail, is it all does come down to bio-individuality. Some people respond to different things differently, I might respond differently than you do, and that's kind of the beauty of life in general. But the theory behind not wanting to fast every day, as far as I'm concerned, and you can talk about this a little bit and tell me if I'm right or wrong, or what the deal is, but if you fast every day, eventually you get yourself to a point where your overall caloric needs do sort of shrink to accommodate that. If you're eating 1000 calories per day because you're fasting every day, and you only eat for a collective total of three or four hours, then eventually, your body is going to adjust to the fact that 1000 calories is just what you need. Now, at what point does that stop? I mean I'm sure your body wouldn't survive if you were to just condition it to run on 100 calories a day, but that's where I come from with that. That's why I say, "Okay. Yes, fasting if you do it too much could potentially slow down your metabolism." But I'd love to hear some of your thought on that and how the thyroid works and how this all comes together and where we're willing to go with our own thought process. Sure. It's even by definition. If your body can survive on 1000 calories a day, again by definition, you've lowered your metabolism. It's not just about weight loss or weight gain when we're talking about metabolism. It's also about metabolic rate. It's the way that your cells actually need and use energy, and it's all the different systems of your body. If you take your caloric needs for the day and you can lower them over time to a point where you only need 800 to 1000 calories per day, again, we've slowed the metabolism, and we've also lowered most likely the hormones. Now, this isn't your body messing up, and you actually did this on purpose, right? You may not have thought about it, but you purposely lowered your metabolism, and you did that to be able to survive on less food. Again, if this was 1000, 2000, 10000 years ago, this would probably be a pretty good thing. The reason is that we can get away with eating less food, which means that we can survive and outlast any type of famine or wartime or drought or whatever it might be, and so, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

And all three of these are myths not backed by any scientific evidence. Theres also plenty of other myths like eating spicy food to increase metabolism drinking coffee and other stimulants to increase metabolism, and of course every new fad SuperFood will supposedly increase your metabolism...you know coconut quinoa avocados. But..... according to the science there's really only a handful of simple things that we can concentrate on to effect our metabolism. By focusing on these few things we can actually permanently change our metabolism rather than reading Fairy Tail like articles about 10, 20, or 55 ways to increase your metabolism. The first proven way to increase your metabolism is by increasing your lean body mass. Now the exact number of how many calories each pound of muscle Burns isn't fully clear. At one point it was believed to be 50 to 100 calories per pound of muscle but nowadays that seems like an overestimation. Some studies say that for each pound of fat on your body you only burn two extra calories to maintain it. And for muscle it's only six extra calories so it's really not all that much of an increase. On the other hand organs like the kidneys and liver and the Heart can burn up to 200 calories per pound. So it would seem that muscle plays a really small role in your metabolism. However there's a lot about muscles effects that we don't fully know about that could add up throughout the day and can easily explain how muscle can be burning a lot more than six calories per pound. First of all these studies are done in a way that keeps protein turnover at a constant rate. Let me explain what protein turnover is. All day your body is creating and breaking down muscle. We refer to the balance between protein synthesis and protein degradation as protein turnover. If you have more synthesis and breakdown then you're in what's called an anabolic mode and your building muscle. If you have more breakdown then synthesis then you're in what's called a catabolic state that burns lean muscle tissue. The problem with keeping protein turnover the same in the studies is that most types of resistance exercises will accelerate protein turnover which ultimately increases calories burnt hours and sometimes days after the workout. Some studies show that the more muscle you have the more calories you burn after an intense workout. So this is a perfect example how muscle has many hidden effects on your metabolism. When you're done exercising especially after a weight training session it takes time for your body to return to homeostasis. Your body needs time and energy to refill the depleted glycogen stores in your muscles and it also needs energy for more protein turnover. So the assumption that muscle itself Burns a ton of calories at rest is probably not true however muscle after the influence of training specially strength training and high intensity training seems to burn a lot more calories in the recovery process. So if you're not exercising definitely try to incorporate some weight training or some high intensity interval training to help increase the amount of calories that you burn at rest. Like I said we don't know the full story about muscle but we do know that it does influence your resting energy expenditure. In a study called age related decrease in resting energy expenditure in sedentary women we get to see a glimpse of what causes that slowed metabolism that we see as people get older. A lot of people believe that as you get older your metabolism naturally slows down and there's not much you could do. But this might not be true. In this study the results suggest that a loss of muscle mass as we age especially leg muscle can lead to decreases in your resting energy expenditure. The study also does acknowledge that the decreases in resting energy expenditure are not fully explained just by changes in the body composition. So there are other factors at play here. The exact effect down to the number of calories burnt for each pound of muscle is unknown but if you want to improve and increase your metabolism there is a huge correlation between a healthy body composition and a higher basal metabolic rate. The more lean mass you have the higher your metabolism will be.

There are many people that say that reverse dieting is completely useless and others that take it to the extreme and have people reverse dieting for as long or longer than they were actually dieting for. I think both of these approaches are wrong. And the answer lies somewhere in the middle of the two. Just like we wouldn't want to cut calories drastically, we don't want to increase them drastically either. So we do need some sort of reverse diet after prolonged calorie restriction. On the flip side of the coin the metabolism is very adaptive and does not take anymore than a couple week maybe a month and half at the most to adapt to maintenance levels. So really long reverse diets except maybe in very rare cases are completely unnecessary. I want to start this video by talking about the problems associated with cutting calories too low for extended periods of time Thermic effect of food will go down, which means you won't be burning as many calories from digestion because obviously your not going to be digesting as much food. You will also experience a loss of muscle mass. These two alone account for the biggest loses to your metabolic rate. That's interesting to note because just by eating more good food and building more muscle we can have drastic effects on increasing our metabolism. Another adaption that occurs on restrictive diets is an Increased efficiency of your energy production system which means that you're body becomes better at converting food and body fat into energy. After dieting for an extended period of time your body will be very good at using and preserving every bit of the food you eat. Which is great for survival, but not so great for fat loss. Reduction in your thyroid hormone and leptin levels. These regulate your metabolism, and when leptin is low your appetite increases. Many times after dieting for a long time your hunger signals are out of control. And you'll be able to eat and eat and eat largely due to very low leptin levels. Other things that staying in an extremely restrictive calorie state can lead to include: Eating disorders induced by dieting In diets that are too restrictive women can lose their menstrual cycle Both men and women will experience lower libido Reduction in fat oxidation emotional distress and depression All of these adaptations set the dieter up for a phenomenon known as post-starvation obesity, or body fat overshooting. Or to put it simply you go right back to being fat because at the end of the diet the individual is left with a repressed metabolic rate, and an overwhelming desire to eat. To say that metabolic damage, metabolic slowdown, metabolic adaption, whatever the hell you want to call it to say that it doesn't exist is either perpetuated by ignorance or inexperience. Your metabolism will slow down on restricted diets this has been proven, and I've seen it in many clients. However, to treat it like an irreversible condition or a condition that at minimum will take several months to fix is a a little extreme. There is nothing permanent about your metabolism slowing down. As long as your behaviors change your metabolism will change too. In studies like the Minnesota Starvation studies and Even in anorexic studies when people recover their original body composition their metabolism recover as well. Everyone of them has reduced their body fat % to a low that is not normal nor healthy, and if you want to stay at 5% body fat forever you may have a body image disorder. Every natural bodybuilder at the time of their show has slowed their metabolisms down from where they were when they first started dieting. The really cool thing is that anyone can shoot their metabolism right back up by increasing their calories to their new maintenance levels while simultaneously building back muscle, and extremely lean people have to normalize their body fat % as well. Bodybuilders for example many times go below the normal healthy body fat %, so after a show almost every bodybuilder should increase their body fat percentage as the lean body mass percentage increases at the same time.

Metabolism Myths Busted - Lose Weight the Right Way

In Part 1 of this special series of Abbey's Kitchen Abbey will be dispelling many common myths surrounding weight loss. With these metabolism myths busted you will have a much easier time losing weight the right way and in turn not only keep off the weight but feel better doing so. First things first. There are a myriad of pills available, as well as powders, that claim to be able to cause you to lose weight fast with out changing anything else about your lifestyle. If it sounds too good to be true rest assured that it always is. Abbey has taken the time to research all the well-known metabolism boosting recommendations and rates them on a scale of 0 to 3 flames. The first metabolism myth to be busted is breakfast. Breakfast is rated at just 1 flame. The flame represents the calorie burning power of each recommendation. With 3 being the best we see that breakfast is clocking in pretty low. We have all been told most of our lives that breakfast is by far the most important meal of the day as it jump starts your metabolism. There are definitely benefits to eating breakfast, such as more stable blood sugar, more mindful eating habits throughout the day, etc. However, there is not enough evidence to conclusively say that eating breakfast will speed up your metabolism resulting in weight loss. If you must have breakfast eat something healthy, and don't eat a lot of it. Another commonly known method is weight training. This one gets three flames due to it's major impact on the metabolism. Muscle has 3x the metabolic impact that fat does, therefore making it a must have when you are considering raising your metabolism. Abbey recommends a weight training session at least 3 times a week. Weight training is unique in that it causes your body to ramp up all of it's resources and truly burn calories, which in turn will definitely ramp up your metabolism. Next on the list is coconut oil, which gets just 1 flame. The diet industry has gone coo-coo for coconut oil. The main reason for this is that coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids, which is saturated fat that is processed and stored differently than other fats. Keep in mind that coconut oil has 100 calories per tbsp so don't fall into the trap of thinking that over-consumption of coconut oil is going to cause weight loss. It can, in fact lead to weight gain due to it's high calorie count. The last one on the list for today is coffee, which Abbey has rated at 1 flame. No one could deny that coffee is great for waking up, but don't go around drinking coffee all day thinking you're shedding pounds. The few, and rather small studies, that have been done regarding the weight loss properties of caffeine have been inconclusive at best. Coffee has it's place, and it certainly is tasty, but it will not have a significant enough impact on your metabolism to cause you to lose weight. Also keep in mind the more you add to you coffee, such as sugar, half and half, etc. the less healthy you make it. There are actually 200 calories in a Grande Vanilla Latte. You definitely keep an eye on your coffee intake. In humans there is a fine balance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Energy intake is in the form of food, and energy expenditure is in the form of the basal metabolic rate and physical activity. The difference between energy intake and energy expenditure is the net energy balance. If intake exceeds expenditure, then a net positive energy balance occurs. Energy expenditure depends on a number of factors. This includes the starting body weight, the basal metabolic rate and physical activity. With regards to physical activity, there are several key variables including the frequency, intensity, duration and type of activity done. Let us now examine energy consumption. One honey glazed donut is shown which has approximately 300 kilocalories. The energy intake from the consumed donut is equal to the energy consumed by moderate walking for 30-60 minutes, at 3.0 miles per hour. If an individual walks for an hour at 3 miles per hour. They will expend approximately 300 kilocalories, the same as what was contained in the consumed donut. If an individual walks daily for one hour at approximately 3 miles per hour. This type of activity would lead to weight loss. This assumes that the individual does not consume any extra calories and has a net negative energy expenditure. If this activity continues for a period of two to four months, body weight is reduced as depicted. The initial weight loss is the result of a negative net energy balance. The negative energy balance is because energy expenditure exceeds energy intake. After the initial weight loss, the individual continues to do the same type of exercise, that is, 1 hour of moderate walking daily. The chart depicts changes in body weight over time. Individuals are surprised and frustrated that his weight is not continuing to decrease despite regular walking. They have reached a plateau. The reason behind the weight loss pleateau is that with decreased body weight, the basal metabolic rate also decreases. When the basal metabolic rate decreases, there is a decrease in total energy expenditure. If the discouraged individual quits his daily walking exercise. The weight is gained again, at a quicker pace. The weight is re-gained as a result of a positive energy balance being created. Energy expenditure is now less since the physical activity has been stopped. By keeping the same intensity and duration of walking without making any changes in the diet (energy intake) the man would enter a weight maintenance phase. This is characterised by gaining a small amount of weight. The weight maintenance is the result of an energy balance being established within the body, where energy intake essentially equals energy expenditure. If there is no change in energy balance, there will not be any further change in weight. What must be done to end the weight loss plateau? Several options exist to maintain a negative net energy balance. These involve either decreasing energy intake or increasing energy expenditure. Options include: restricting calories further or increasing the frequency, or the intensity or the duration of the exercise. In summary then, weight loss plateau's are expected and can only end with continued exercise and a net negative energy balance. Stopping exercise or increasing calories will lead to weight gain. If one continues to exercise to maintain a net negative energy balance weight loss will be promoted.

The key is to get an elevated heart rate for five minutes and let "cool down" other two. 2. Take spices. Add curry, cayenne pepper, black pepper, cumin and turmeric to your dishes which triggers the body's fat-burning speed. These foods cause greater energy expenditure by simply generating heat, accelerating the combustion of energy and acts as a fat burner during digestion. The same is true with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and nutmeg. Try adding them to your creams, chips, stews and other dishes. To work efficiently, this gland needs selenium, zinc, copper and iodine. So your diet should include these minerals. To achieve this, eat seafood and nuts. 5. Eat good breakfast. In this fast-paced world in which we live, many have the bad habit of skipping breakfast or eat whatever, as we walk out the door. This is one of the worst things you can do for your metabolism. You should always eat a healthy breakfast, which includes healthy proteins such as eggs and fruit full of antioxidants. In addition, the ideal is to eat five or six small meals a day to avoid blood sugar peak and reduce anxiety. Opt for protein-rich foods with a lower percentage of fat, such as chicken, fish, boiled eggs, fresh cheeses, soy ... and reduce high-glycemic carbohydrates (sugars, sweets, pasta, potatoes, carrots, bread, etc). You Can Crunch Your Way to A 6-Pack The body anatomically has your muscles located underneath where you store fat. It’s likely that you already have great abs from the natural movements in. As controversial as that may sound, it seems a stricter diets produces better weight loss results. There is more to health than just losing weight, but that’s what the science is telling us. The takeaway here is that if you want to see serious weight loss results use an aggressive diet. This does not mean that you should go on a crazy juice fast or crazy tea-tox, just that losing more than 2 pounds per week is ok and a probably a good idea if you have a lot to lose.

A good rule with portion size is that it should be around the size of the palm of your hand, or about 20-30 grams per meal. Eat Coconut Oil Fat has many benefits because they help improve your hormones levels. However, one of the best “fat burning” fats is coconut oil. This is because coconut oil is a medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). While all other fats are LONG-chain and thus, convert to body fat faster. And based on the thousands of clients that I've worked with in my gyms and online this process can be broken down into 3 major keys that determine whether you will be successful with losing weight and body fat or not. So in today's video I want to give you these 3 keys so you can unlock your bodies full fat burning abilities. If you make sure that you do all three of these things you will burn fat faster than ever before and keep it off permanently. Let's start with the first key. The model for burning fat has always looked like this. If you take too many calories in from food and you don't burn enough calories from exercise you gain fat and vice versa if you have less calories than you burn you'll lose fat. Everyone knows that, we've been told that over and over again since we were little kids. That means that the traditional model suggests that the reason you have excess fat or your carry extra weight is because you have too many calories. And the unspoken reason behind this model for why you have too many calories is because of a lack of willpower. You have excess body fat because it's your fault for not having enough self control and willpower to just consume fewer calories. However, this doesn't match up with your experience. Based on you own personal experience you know that when you have fewer calories you lose a couple pounds and then you usually get stuck. You continue eating fewer calories and feeling like your starving yourself eating bland boring foods you hate, but you never hit your target weight. This goes on for a while...you get discouraged...and then you quit because no one can stay on a restrictive low calorie diet for the long haul especially when its not producing results. Well, guess what I'm here to tell you its not entirely your fault. And I don't mean that in some cliche cheesy way, I mean quite literally its not only because you don't have enough willpower or self control even though for some of you that may be a big contributing factor. Make no mistake you will need will power to burn fat, but this isn't the only cause. In reality if we only look at calories in & calories out your not addressing the core cause of the problem. You see burning fat & losing weight is not just about using willpower to starve yourself by eating less & exercising more, because your body is way too smart for that. Within just a week after decreasing calories coming in your body will automatically decrease calories coming out. Many people refer to this process as your body entering into a so called "starvation mode." This is where your metabolism will slow down causing your fat loss to slow to almost nothing. Not only does your body slow your metabolism & this is proven over & over again in study after study, but it also increases the production of a hormone known as ghrelin. Ghrelins role is to signal your brain to make you feel hungry. So to sum up this whole torturous dieting process up you now have less calories coming in, less calories coming out due to your body responding with a slower metabolism, you're hungrier because of ghrelin, yet you're not burning much fat. In fact the situation begins to feel like you need to keep cutting calories just to maintain your current body fat rather than to lose more. And that's ultimately what discourages you & causes you to quit. Starting the whole cycle over again months later when you're probably in even worse shape than you were before. So what are we missing? Well it turns out your willpower is actually not the core cause of this problem it's actually also a hormonal problem rather than just a calorie problem. Once you understand this fat loss becomes easy & keeping it off is even easier. People think that when calories come in they keep going out until you eat too many calories & then your body starts storing those excess calories as fat. Gaining weight as a skinny person is not easy. It is frustrating to eat a lot but still not gain weight. One thing that skinny people do not know is that they have a fast metabolism which makes it hard for them to gain weight. A fast metabolism means that your body burns all the calories you eat. As a skinny person trying to gain weight, you have to eat a lot more than your metabolism can handle. Naturally, creating a caloric surplus in your body will make you gain weight. Probably you are skinny due to lack of knowledge of what it takes to gain weight. Below are top five tips that will help you gain weight: 5. Eat more food The leading trick to gain weight is to consume more calories than your body can burn. The mistake that most people do is to go by their feelings. Your metabolism could be much faster than you think. You need to know how much calories your body needs for you to gain weight. Keep track of everything you eat to know how much calories you consume every day. You might overestimate your calorie intake if you go with your feelings. In the first week, you will have difficulties eating all the required calories for you to gain weight. After maybe two weeks, your stomach will stretch and start getting hungry more often. 4. Track your progress Weigh yourself every week to check how you are progressing. Malnourished people will gain weight quickly in the first week due to increased bowel content and weight from the extra water as well. Continue eating the same if you gain weight; if you do not gain weight, you will have to keep adding more calories to your daily intake every week until you gain weight. You should note that the food that makes you gain the first 10kg will not make you gain the next 10kg. A skinny person with less muscle mass burns fewer calories than one with a bigger muscle mass. Thus, a person with no muscles will require fewer calories to gain weight as opposed to a more masculine person. 3. Eat more protein Protein is necessary for muscle building and recovery. The following are the best protein sources for gaining weight: whole eggs, chicken breast, tuna, cheese, and steaks. For you to build your body muscles, you will require at least 1g of proteins per 1lb of body-weight per day. However, you should have in mind that some people will not gain weight or muscles without gaining fat as well. 2. Eat more meals You have been eating little food for years. Thus your stomach is small. If you are required to take at least 1500 calories a day for you to gain weight, it will be easier if you take 300 calories in 5 meals than having 500 calories in 3 meals. Create yourself a bigger eating window. With eight sleeping hours, you are left with 16 hours to eat. Make a schedule of how you will have the five meals in those 16 hours. 1. Training Lifting weights is good for people trying to gain weight since it triggers the body to build muscle mass. If you do not train, the excess calories that do not burn will be stored as fat around your waistline. Your goal is to be muscular and not chubby. Therefore you will need to train. Remember, the more you train, the more calories you will burn and therefore the more calories you will require creating a caloric surplus.
