Seattle Cancer Care Alliance denies access to people who wear glasses & to older people

01:14
July 4, 2018: With their choice to use light value, low contrast type in their website - instead of using common-sense fundamentals of graphic design with accessible black, high-contrast type, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance execs choose to disenfranchise most of the population. ~ They could choose to use functional, accessible graphic design. But needlessly this campaign against access goes in-tandem with their disrespect for the 48 million hearing impaired and or deaf Americans with their ongoing choice to show ads on Seattle area tv network stations that have people speaking but which lack cc's (closed captions). ~ The SCCA is composed of the University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle Children's Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The UW Medical Center ran tv commercials for years in western Washington without cc's. Now that the UW Medical Ctr is part of the SCCA, they continue the same disrespect and contempt to the hearing impaired, to the deaf, and to seniors and the elderly ~ Years of recommendations to the UW Medical Center and to the president of the Univ of Washington re the lack of cc's have been met by silence. ~ If the SCCA wants to make their website funtional and accessible they could choose to use black, high contrast type. That would go along way towards making the site readable for everyone (and not just for a few younger people who do not wear corrective eye wear) ~ The reason why optometrists only project alpa-numerics (letters and numbers) in black, high-contrast type during patient eye exams is evidently and obviously beyond the understanding of the administrative and medical executive directors of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and their divisions within. It need not be.

Brain Tumor Program

03:10
Charles S. Cobbs, MD - Neurosurgeon and Director of the the Swedish Neuroscience Institute's Ivy Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment - shares what makes the Seattle, WA brain cancer treatment center stand out from other brain tumor treatment centers in the Western Washington State region. "The Ivy Center is just about brain cancer," he explains. "Once we get to know our patient as an individual person, he or she will get a thorough evaluation and a focused approach - just for brain tumors." Dr. Cobbs also explains why having large patient volumes and access to clinical trials mean better outcomes for patients who are treated at Swedish Neuroscience Institute. According to Dr. Cobbs, most clincs don't address the high anxiety, and sometimes depression, that may accompany a diagnosis of a brain tumor. "It's well known that one of the biggest missing peices of the puzzle of brain tumor treatment is the psychological impact of the disease," Dr. Cobbs explains. "We've very fortunate to have Robin here as a social worker and therapist, to address these issues with all of our patients. It really helps them get through these tough times." "My primary job is to make sure that patients and families are not alone," says Robin Callahan, MSW LICSW. "I am able to bring my training in Western Psychotherapy, Chinese Medicine, Mindfulness and Animal Assistive Therapy and provide individual patient-centered care." Meet Dr. Cobbs and Robyn in this short video. Peaches Nix Breast Cancer in Mice

02:21
COLLEGE STATION -- Lab tests at Texas A&M AgriLife Research have shown that treatments with peach extract inhibit breast cancer metastasis in mice. AgriLife Research scientists say that the mixture of phenolic compounds present in the peach extract are responsible for the inhibition of metastasis, according to the study, which was this month published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. "Cancer cells were implanted under the skin of mice with an aggressive type of breast cancer cells, the MDA-MB-435, and what we saw was an inhibition of a marker gene in the lungs after a few weeks indicating an inhibition of metastasis when the mice were consuming the peach extract," said Dr. Luis Cisneros-Zevallos, a food scientist for AgriLife Research in College Station. "Furthermore, after determining the dose necessary to see the effects in mice, it was calculated that for humans it would be equivalent to consuming two to three peaches per day." Peaches at Texas A&M AgriLife Research field in College Station (Texas A&M AgriLife Research photo by Kathleen Phillips) Peaches at Texas A&M AgriLife Research field in College Station (Texas A&M AgriLife Research photo by Kathleen Phillips) This is very important because it can be translated into something that is also beneficial for people, he added. This work builds upon previous work at AgriLife Research released a few years ago, which showed that peach and plum polyphenols selectively killed aggressive breast cancer cells and not the normal ones, Cisneros-Zavallos said. The previous work as well as the present one was conducted by Cisneros-Zevallos, Dr. David Byrne, both with AgriLife Research; Dr. Weston Porter, Texas A&M University department of veterinary physiology and pharmacology; and then-graduate student Giuliana Noratto, who is now on the faculty at Washington State University. In the western hemisphere, breast cancer is the most common malignant disease for women, he said. In the U.S. last year, the American Cancer Society estimated about 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer among women. Most of the complications and high mortality associated with breast cancer are due to metastasis, Cisneros-Zevallos pointed out. "The importance of our findings are very relevant, because it shows in vivo the effect that natural compounds, in this case the phenolic compounds in peach, have against breast cancer and metastasis. It gives opportunity to include in the diet an additional tool to prevent and fight this terrible disease that affects so many people," he said. The study was conducted using the peach variety Rich Lady. However, according to Cisneros-Zevallos, most peach fruit share similar polyphenolic compounds but might differ in content. The study also determined that the underlying mechanism by which peach polyphenols are inhibiting metastasis would be by targeting and modulating the gene expression of metalloproteinases. "In general, peach fruit has chemical compounds that are responsible for killing cancer cells while not affecting normal cells as we reported previously, and now we are seeing that this mixture of compounds can inhibit metastasis," said Cisneros-Zevallos. "We are enthusiastic about the idea that perhaps by consuming only two to three peaches a day we can obtain similar effects in humans. However, this will have to be the next step in the study for its confirmation." Cisneros-Zevallos continues testing these extracts and compounds in different types of cancer as well as in diabetes studies in vitro and in vivo to understand the molecular mechanisms involved. The work documenting the health benefits of stone fruit has been supported by the Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center at Texas A&M, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the California Tree Fruit Agreement. see http://today.agrilife.org/2014/03/25/texas-researcher-peaches-inhibit-breast-cancer-metastasis-in-mice/ -30-

Claims row with west means some cancer patients can't be treated in Iran

Our only problem is the Tehran reactor, which is fundamental to the radioactive medicines we use here. Now it's running out of the radioactive substance required for production of radioisotopes and (it) cannot provide us with a sufficient amount and we have to import the radioactive substance for other medicines which has its own difficulties because of the sanctions against us, their expensive prices and delays in their shipment." 9. Close-up of CCTV monitors showing patients with thyroid cancers receiving radioactive iodine thyroid in quarantine 18. Various of patients in the quarantine wards LEAD IN: Iranian doctors say they can't treat cancer patients in desperate need because the standoff between the Iran and western governments is leading to a dangerous shortage of nuclear medicines which target tumours. Medical staff rely on radioactive isotopes produced by a Tehran nuclear research reactor, which is running out of fuel. STORYLINE: This is one of the Shariati Hospital's busiest departments. The patient is being scanned by the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging (NMRI) machine which is vital to both the diagnosis of diseases like cancer and the delivery of radioactive medicine used to shrink tumours. It's constantly in use. This hospital alone treats hundreds of patients each week, but it's still not enough. Doctors say they're turning patients away. Iran says fuel for the Tehran research reactor which produces the isotopes will run out next September. That leaves the nation's hospitals without the means needed to diagnose and treat around 850,000 and a million cancer patients. Iran emphatically denies the claim. Preventing Opioid Addiction in Patients With Cancer

02:48
Jaron Mark, M.D., a gynecologic oncology fellow at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, discusses the opioid crisis, and the steps that his institution is taking to combat potential addiction in women who undergo surgery for gynecologic cancer. According to Mark, the crisis started in more than three decades ago when research was published in the New England Journal of Medicine stating that opioid addiction is low in hospitalized patients. People misinterpreted these findings to mean that opioids were not addictive, and by the 1990s, these drugs were being heavily marketed and prescribed. At Roswell Park, Mark and his team found that many women who had surgery for their cancer reported not using the opioids that were prescribed to them. So, they stopped prescribing opioid pills for patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery or minor outpatient procedures.

But according to the report there is also clear evidence that healthy lifestyles and public health action by governments and health practitioners could stem this trend, and prevent as many as one third of cancers worldwide. The W-H-O calls the report the most comprehensive global examination of the disease to date. In the year 2000, malignant tumors were responsible for 12 per cent of the nearly 56 (M) million deaths worldwide from all causes. The report also reveals that cancer has emerged as a major public health problem in developing countries, matching its effect in industrialised nations. According to the World Cancer Report, reducing tobacco consumption remains the most important way of avoiding the risk of cancer. In the 20th century, the WHO estimates that approximately 100 (M) million people died worldwide from tobacco-associated diseases. The report also states that a healthy lifestyle and diet can help. It shows that the frequent consumption of fruit and vegetables and physical activity can make a difference. Finally, the WHO reports that early detection through screening, particularly for cervical and breast cancers, allow for prevention and successful cure.
