Blood pressure is generated by the heart that pumps blood into the arteries and is regulated by the arteries' response to blood flow. Blood pressure is one of the vital signs of the body. It refers to the force that blood applies to the walls of blood vessels during contraction and relaxation of the heart muscle. Blood pressure measures the pressure in the arteries, the vessels that carry blood away from the heart. The ability of arteries to respond to blood flow determines blood pressure. What is low blood pressure? Low blood pressure is a difficult clinical finding to address for a health professional. While high blood pressure is known as the "silent killer", since it is associated with few acute symptoms, hypotension (hypo = low + tension = pressure) may be normal for a patient if it does not have symptoms but may be great importance if it is associated with abnormal body function. Sometimes, the low is good, a goal that must be achieved to keep blood pressure under control. Sometimes, the low is bad because there is not enough pressure to provide blood flow to the organs of the body. Blood pressure ratio The blood pressure readings have two parts and are expressed as a ratio: "Normal" blood pressure for example, it is 120/80 (120 over 80) and measures the pressure inside the arteries of the body. Systolic pressure, the upper number, measures the pressure inside the arteries when the heart contracts (systole) to pump blood to the body. Diastolic pressure the lowest number measures the resting pressures inside the arteries when the heart is at rest. Medical conditions that can cause low blood pressure include: The pregnancy. Because the circulatory system expands rapidly during pregnancy, blood pressure is likely to decrease. This is normal, and blood pressure usually returns to its pre-pregnancy level after giving birth. Heart problems. Some heart conditions that can cause low blood pressure include an extremely low heart rate (bradycardia), heart valve problems, myocardial infarction, and heart failure. Dehydration. When your body loses more water than it absorbs, it can cause weakness, dizziness, and fatigue. Fever, vomiting, severe diarrhea, excessive use of diuretics and strenuous exercise can lead to dehydration. Loss of blood. Losing a lot of blood, such as from a major injury or internal bleeding, reduces the amount of blood in your body, which causes a serious decrease in blood pressure. Severe infection (septicemia). When an infection in the body enters the bloodstream, it can lead to a life-threatening drop in blood pressure called septic shock. Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Common triggers of this serious and life-threatening reaction include food, certain medications, insect poisons and latex. Anaphylaxis can cause respiratory problems, hives, itching, swelling of the throat and a dangerous drop in blood pressure. The lack of nutrients in your diet. The lack of vitamins B-12 and folic acid can prevent your body from producing enough red blood cells (anemia), causing low blood pressure.

As a result, blood pressure goes up to compensate and get blood to the brain. Low blood pressure can accompany dehydration, so you may be able to raise your blood pressure by increasing your water intake. What can I do to help my low blood pressure while pregnant?
You mentioned that you're 19 weeks and you're concerned about having low blood pressure, you're worried about passing out because of it. I do recommend talking with your doctor about it, they can determine if your blood pressure is indeed lower than usually and determine if further investigation or treatment is warranted for that. Generally speaking a lot of women experience dizziness and it is normal to pass out occasionally, that can happen, especially if you stand up quickly, make sure you stand up slowly. Also drink water, at least eight to ten glasses each day. At this point in pregnancy it's really important to start sleeping on your side. The reason is because your main arteries and veins run through your trunk and if you lay flat on your back the weight of the growing baby and uterus compresses those vessels and causes your blood pressure to drop. This affects you and can also affect the baby. So to prevent this from happening, because while you're sleeping you don't always have control over what you're doing, get a firm pillow or a rolled up blanket and put it underneath your hip to prop you to the side. You may also want to do the same thing on the other side to support the weight of your belly, especially as it gets bigger it'll hang off to the side, and that will help you feel more comfortable. Again, I do recommend talking with your doctor and they can determine if anything else needs to be done about it. Normal blood pressure is important for proper blood flow to the body’s organs and tissues. The force of the blood on the walls of the arteries is called blood pressure. Blood pressure is measured both as the heart contracts, which is called systole, and as it relaxes, which is called diastole. Normal blood pressure is considered to be a systolic blood pressure of 115 millimeters of mercury a diastolic pressure of 70 millimeters of mercury (stated as "115 over 70"). If an individual were to have a consistent blood pressure reading of 140 over 90, he would be evaluated for having high blood pressure. If left untreated, high blood pressure can damage important organs, such as the brain and kidneys, as well as lead to a stroke. High blood pressure is a common disease in which blood flows through blood vessels (arteries) at higher than normal pressures. Measuring Blood Pressure Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. High blood pressure, sometimes called hypertension, happens when this force is too high. Health care workers check blood pressure readings the same way for children, teens, and adults. They use a gauge, stethoscope or electronic sensor, and a blood pressure cuff. With this equipment, they measure: Systolic Pressure: blood pressure when the heart beats while pumping blood Diastolic Pressure: blood pressure when the heart is at rest between beats Health care workers write blood pressure numbers with the systolic number above the diastolic number. For example: 118/76 mmHg People read "118 over 76" millimeters of mercury. Normal Blood Pressure: Normal blood pressure for adults is defined as a systolic pressure below 120 mmHg and a diastolic pressure below 80 mmHg. It is normal for blood pressures to change when you sleep, wake up, or are excited or nervous. When you are active, it is normal for your blood pressure to increase. However, once the activity stops, your blood pressure returns to your normal baseline range. Blood pressure normally rises with age and body size. Newborn babies often have very low blood pressure numbers that are considered normal for babies, while older teens have numbers similar to adults. Abnormal Blood Pressure Abnormal increases in blood pressure are defined as having blood pressures higher than 120/80 mmHg. The following table outlines and defines high blood pressure severity levels. The ranges in the table are blood pressure guides for adults who do not have any short-term serious illnesses. People with diabetes or chronic kidney disease should keep their blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg. Although blood pressure increases seen in prehypertension are less than those used to diagnose high blood pressure, prehypertension can progress to high blood pressure and should be taken seriously. Over time, consistently high blood pressure weakens and damages your blood vessels, which can lead to complications. Types of High Blood Pressure There are two main types of high blood pressure: primary and secondary high blood pressure. Primary High Blood Pressure Primary, or essential, high blood pressure is the most common type of high blood pressure. This type of high blood pressure tends to develop over years as a person ages. Secondary High Blood Pressure Secondary high blood pressure is caused by another medical condition or use of certain medicines. This type usually resolves after the cause is treated or removed. Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure exerted by circulating blood upon the walls of blood vessels. When used without further specification, "blood pressure" usually refers to the arterial pressure in the systemic circulation. It is usually measured at a person's upper arm. Blood pressure is usually expressed in terms of the systolic (maximum) pressure over diastolic (minimum) pressure and is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). It is one of the vital signs along with respiratory rate, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and body temperature. Normal resting blood pressure in an adult is approximately 120/80 mm Hg. Blood pressure varies depending on situation, activity, and disease states. It is regulated by the nervous and endocrine systems. Blood pressure that is low due to a disease state is called hypotension, and pressure that is consistently high is hypertension. Both have many causes which can range from mild to severe. Both may be of sudden onset or of long duration. Long term hypertension is a risk factor for many diseases, including kidney failure, heart disease, and stroke. Long term hypertension is more common than long term hypotension in Western countries. Long term hypertension often goes undetected because of infrequent monitoring and the absence of symptoms.
