Teaching Kids How to Make Inferences (Rock It!, Part 12)

01:48
This video features an activity from my book "Rock It! Transform Classroom Learning with Movement, Songs, and Stories." The book includes over 100 classroom-tested ideas, activities, and strategies that incorporate music, movement, and storytelling to improve student learning and energize the overall environment. In the video I present a brief chant, along with a corresponding set of hand movements, to help children understand what it means to make an inference when they are reading. By repeating the chant and doing these movements for just a minute or two per day for a few days, kids will remember that when making an inference, they need to combine a piece of information from the text with their own knowledge. Give this idea a try in class with your students or at home with your children. More information about the book can be found at http://rockitbook.weebly.com. Each of my new "Teaching Kids" videos will feature 1-2 minute tips for educators and parents and will address a wide variety of topics that focus on teaching the whole child, including academics, character, and health. For Teaching Tips, articles, and other resources on teaching the whole child, visit and subscribe at www.stevereifman.com.

Teaching Inference using Fun, Concrete Examples for Reading Comprehension

04:27
http://www.behaviorcommunicates.com Once again, reading comprehension is that part of reading that seems to be the last frontier. We all need to make sure that we are presenting all of the components of reading comprehension if we expect students to fully understand what they are reading. Teaching students how to use their schema plus evidence in a story to form an inference can actually be a lot of fun. Take a look at two examples of how you can do this!

Precision Teaching: Inference Game

04:08
In this clip, students are actively engaged in a game that reinforces their understanding of the term "inference." The teacher pulls unfamiliar objects from a mystery bag and the students are challenged to infer the function of each based on the "tool's clues." As inferences are made, students provide a rationale for their thinking. Infusing active games into the teaching-learning process is an effective way to engage students in practising a newly taught skill or strategy. • What do you think are the benefits to students and to teachers of this approach to guided practice? • How might you modify this game to support your students in the content area they are currently studying?

08:54
This English Language Arts Common Core video features fourth grade students from John F. Kennedy Intermediate School located in Deer Park, Long Island. The lesson focuses on ELA Standard RL.4.1 - Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Students read a speech of President Obama's for a third time, analyzing the text in order to practice drawing inferences. The teacher, Alexis Ghiraldi, deftly models inferencing and scaffolds for individual students as needed so that all of the pairs master the learning target.

Learning how to Draw Inferences

19:53
In this lesson, students learn how to draw inferences in a multi-modal way, by singing, reading, using visuals and meaningful gestures. Through the learning theory called Multiple Intelligences, this lesson addresses student assets related to intelligence as well as background knowledge of story elements. By administering an MI inventory, teachers can determine the strengths and challenges of students and then explain how the lesson addresses student needs. See my TPT store for the lesson plan, handouts and posters that accompany this lesson.

Being a Reading Detective

17:25
Do your students struggle with reading comprehension. Teach your students how to become reading detectives. Watch this video taken of Indi Frederking, ELA Curriculum and Instruction Coach at Peoria Unified teaching a reading lesson to students from Mrs. Christina Laubmeier's 3rd grade class at Vistancia Elementary. In this lesson, Indi walks students through the steps of being a good reading detective. Students are taught to do a page walk to gather information or clues about the topic and main idea of the text, by making observations using text features, asking questions, making predictions, and inferences. Students are taught to connect genre with author's purpose. Using a paired nonfiction selection, students make connections and discuss their findings. Students learn how to use close reading strategies and make simple meaningful annotations to increase their understanding of complex text. Learn how to use text evidence with short reads in an ELA lesson.
