I think you have to start by breaking down the nutritional supplements into categories. In this video, I categorize multivitamins, specialty vitamins, protein powders, pre workouts, creatine, BCAA’s, creatine, omega-3’s and joint recovery formulas. Each group is discussed in relation to one of four age brackets regarding their appropriateness. All of the supplements discussed are ones that I take myself and would recommend to others. You will not see any testosterone boosters or pro hormones because I don’t believe in them or recommend them to my viewers. Even the pre workout supplements must undergo severe scrutiny based on the dangers that have been shown to riddle that product category for the past couple of years. All that said however, I make it very clear that any supplementation plan must start with a commitment to good nutrition. If you think that you are going to make up for a bad diet by taking supplements you are flat out fooling yourself, and likely wasting a lot of money. Supplements are meant to supplement a good nutrition plan. The first vitamin that is needed is the B-vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, etc.). Minerals are also needed as in potassium (4700 mg), magnesium and sodium - these electrolytes are need to prevent deficiencies. You also need D3, omega 3 and even trace minerals. This provides you the key nutrients to make this transition from glucose to fat burning efficiently. Hi guys, I recently have a question what multivitamins and minerals do I need in a ketogenic diet. Well, the first thing you need to do and a lot of people will use vitamins because they don’t want to consume the amount of vegetables that they really need. You really need to do that because we want to get as many vitamins and minerals from the vegetables as possible, 7 to 10 cups. Not just for the vitamins and minerals but to flush out the fat, we need that greens and healthy vegetables. However, when you are switching from sugar burning to fat burning, when you are adopting, you need more of certain nutrients and you definitely need more B vitamins, vitamin B6, B5, B1 and B12. I recommend getting this in the nutritional yeast, you can get it in powder. I have nutritional yeast in tablet form to make it easier to consume and this is a non-fortified. When you consume nutritional yeast, you don’t want to fortify or enrich it with synthetic vitamins but I also added some natural B12. You also need minerals specifically potassium, magnesium and sodium. When you are in a low carb diet you need more salt, consume about 1teaspoon of salt. If you are in a high carbohydrate diet only have a quarter teaspoon of salt. We do need a lot of potassium and a good amount of magnesium. I use electrolyte powder because it has a thousand mg of potassium citrate, good amount of magnesium and has a little bit of sodium. You may need to enhance sodium because this is not have a lot of sodium but this is cool because it doesn’t have a lot of maltodextrin, it doesn’t have the sugar and it has the trace minerals on it as well. You also need vitamin D3, you can get this on sunlight or fish oils, in that way you can kill two birds in one stone and you can get you omega 3. If you can get high quality cod liver oil, you can get D3 and Omega 3. And you have trace minerals which are those minerals are needed in much smaller amounts, and it is hard to find that in the diet and it can really help you. An example would be chromium, iodine, selenium. Again, the goal is to get as much of the vitamins and minerals from the food but I also recommend enhancing it with B vitamins, minerals, D3, Omega 3 and trace minerals. The Ultimate Guide To Vegan B12 Sources
Konniche wah, GojiMan here. Its good to see all your smiling faces again. In todays vlog I give you the Ultimate Guide To vegan b12 sources all the way from sunny Cornwall. Now a lot of this information you won’t have heard before so you aren’t going to want to miss this. Roll the titles. If this is our first time meeting, hello. I vlog on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on vegan health and nutrition. I am currently just finishing a masters in nutrition and qualifying as a nutritionist and next year I will be doing a Phd in nutritional science. So hit that subscribe button, hit that bell notification and make me a happy smiling vegan! So lets get to the video. Vitamin B12 (also known as cobalamin) is critical in the body. It plays a pivotal role in DNA synthesis, blood and bone health, heart health, detoxification as well as being critical in the maintenance of your nervous system and brain health. Although rare, long term severe b12 deficiency can lead to anemia, paralysis and even death, so you want to ensure that you get enough B12 to ensure optimal health. A common B12 myth is that since b12 is found in meat, dairy and egg products, you have to eat these products or you will run into deficiency.It is also suggested that b12 proves that we were born to eat meat. It is really important for your health though to understand that animals do not make B12. It is made by microorganisms living in the soil and water. So simply put, B12 is made by bacteria. B12 is found in animal products because they eat grass, plants and small amounts of soil that contain B12. This B12 is then swallowed by the animal and then deposited in their muscles. In years gone by, humans got their sources of vitamin B12 in the same way. Our ancestors would spend hours every day foraging for fruits and vegetables that were pulled from the ground and contained sufficient levels of B12. If they were thirsty then they would drink well water that contained B12. Fast forward to today and these same fruits and vegetable are sprayed with every type of pesticide/herbicide possible and washed within an inch of their lives. Tap water is also heavily chlorinated. So the traditional and optimal sources of B12 have been obliterated. Vegans therefore need to find alternative sources. Before supplementing, everyone should look at getting tested for B12 levels. But it doesn’t just stop there. You need to test for B12 in conjunction with homocysteine and serum folate. And let me explain why. Firstly you need to ensure you have B12 levels are in the range of 600ng/l or above. The reason for this is there is not enough circulating B12 in your tissues, or enough serum folate, then a troublesome molecule called homocysteine is able to build up. And this is something you really want to avoid at all costs. Homocysteine damages artery walls and allows plaque formation. The net result of this is heart attacks and strokes. So please please please never listen to anyone who says that heart attacks are simply cause by eating meat, dairy and eggs. This is why I always recommend that people test for b12, homocysteine and serum folate at the same time because it gives you a true picture of what’s actually happening in your body. Your homocysteine score will tell you if your B12 and folate levels are adequate and vice versa. Testing for just B12 will not give you a true picture. Ideally homocysteine should be below 12 micromols/L. If it is above this coupled with low b12 levels then you know your body is not getting adequate sources of b12. You will therefore need to increase b12 supplentation intake. If your folate levels are also low then consume dark leafy greens on a daily basis and then retest all levels after three months. I would suggest that you retest after 3 months after starting to optimise your b12, homocysteine and folate levels to ensure your body is absorbing ok. If not then you could have an absorption problem…… but that is a topic for another video. Once you have everything optimised then I would advise testing b12, homocysteine and folate levels on a yearly basis. The best source will be dependent on your needs and your genetics. There is no one size that fits all. I personally take a supplement every day. Before I tell you which one and why let me break down your options. There are 4 types of b12: cyanocobalamin, hydroxycabalamin, methylcobalamin adenosylcobalamin Cyanocobalamin is least expensive and most stable (so doesn’t degrade as quick on the shelf), but there are concerns around that fact that it releases a small amount of cyanide as it is metabolised in the body. Cyanocobalamin and hydroxycobalamin are forms of b12 that can also be difficult for people to convert into the active forms of B12 if they have the homozygous MTHFR mutation. You need MTHFR enzymes to produce the active form.

The first one I am going to recommend is minerals. You want to potassium, magnesium, sodium and calcium those were electrolytes, and then trace minerals. Because minerals helps reduce insulin resistance and it puts you into fat burning a lot better. Plus, these minerals are alkaline which offset some of the uric acid buildup that comes from the ketogenic diet to lessen the chance to get a gout or the uric acid kidney stones. Number 2 vitamin B1, this is essential in the adaptation of sugar burning into fat burning, and it is also great to relieve stress. Vitamin B3 is really good for lowering cholesterol that is coming out of the fat cells or liver and it is also good to support the liver in general. Vitamin B5 is another key B vitamin that is essential in the adaptation to fat burning. If you are deficient in B5 and B1, you may notice more fatigue, keto flu and keto rash, any of those symptoms. Number 5, vitamin A which is also essential in dealing with insulin resistance and you would get vitamin A in cod liver oil, grass-fed cheese, grass-fed liver and egg yolks. No. 6 vitamin D and I recommend vitamin D3 version, this is really good for insulin resistance and improving that. It is also in cod liver oil, egg yolk. In fact if you consume cod liver oil, you get a 50/50 split of vitamin A and vitamin D so you could kill 2 birds at 1 stone. No. 7 choline which is essential of getting the fat off the liver. I recommend doing electrolyte powder for the minerals. I recommend nutritional yeast for B1, B3, B5 and it even has choline. I have a version that has non-fortified, it is in a tablet form with added B12. You have electrolyte powder, nutritional yeast, and cod liver oil and if you really have fatty liver you could have choline in addition to the choline that is in nutritional yeast to strip off the fat from the liver. Basically electrolytes have to do with minerals that help conduct electricity in the body. They help with a lot of different things. As far as the electrolytes, it will be like potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, chlorides, and all those minerals. Potassium out of all the electrolytes is the one that we need in a very large quantities. Why is that? Why do we need potassium in a large amount? I am talking 4,700 mg to 6,000 mg every single day and that is equivalent to 7 to 10+ cups of salad or vegetables every single day. Let’s go dig further into exactly to why we need potassium. There are something in the body called sodium-potassium pump. It is built in a little protein connected to an enzyme, it forms a whole enzyme in the surface of your cells and you will have between 8,000 to 30million of this little tiny pumps and they are little generators that generate electricity to allow things to go through the cell so it take a lot of energy, in fact the energy of 1/3 of your diet goes to running those pumps. You also have another pump in the stomach called the hydrogen potassium ATPas, it is basically another pump that is built with a potassium that allows you to create stomach acid to help you digest. This pumps are also in the muscles, nervous systems and the pumps in the nervous system used about 60% of your body’s chloric intake of energy. In other words, these pumps are really critically important in exchanging nutrition, glucose, amino acids and other minerals to allow them to transport in other cell. Potassium is essential for building the pumps to allow these functions right here, they charge the cell electrically, so your cells have a certain voltage to allow things to work and go in and out of the cell to create different energy. In fact your energy that you have that controls your metabolism is controlled partly by these little pump. So it charges the cell electrically, it gives you energy. It helps the muscle contracts and relax because it allows calcium to go into the cell as well. It controls the transport of calcium. So, if you enjoy the taste or convenience factor of protein shakes and/or protein powder recipes, then including them in your diet is obviously a good idea. However, if you'd prefer to just meet your daily protein intake from regular solid food sources, that's fine too and your bottom line bodybuilding results won't differ in the big picture. As for the 3 questions above... How To Use Protein Powder: 1) Best Protein Powder To Take: When it all comes down to it, any basic protein powder is ultimately fine to use as part of your muscle building or fat loss diet. Although certain sources like whey or egg are higher quality on a gram for gram basis, the issue of quality gradually becomes less important in the context of a complete diet where overall protein needs for the day as a whole are being met. This is because your body only requires a finite amount of amino acids to max out your muscle building capability over a given time period, and as long as you're getting enough total protein from a variety of sources (about 0.8-1g per pound of body weight daily), those amino acid needs will usually be met pretty easily. My default recommendation is to use a blend of whey isolate/whey concentrate because it tastes good, mixes well and is cost-effective (check above for my recommended powders), but egg or casein are also acceptable choices if you prefer them for some reason. Or, if you're vegan or would just prefer a plant based protein powder, then brown rice protein, soy protein, pea protein or vegan blends are fine as well. (Side note: I would recommend men consume no more than 30g of total soy protein per day just to be on the safe side) The only other thing to make sure of when selecting the best protein powder for you is that the product is not amino spiked. My general guideline is that having up to half of your total protein intake in the form of protein powder is fine depending on your preference. 3) Protein Powder Timing: There won't be anything special about taking protein powder at any one specific time of day over another. So, if you prefer it for breakfast, pre or post workout, after dinner or before bed, any of these times will be fine. Just base it on what is most convenient and most enjoyable for you. So, is protein powder necessary? No, but for most average lifters it is a good way of improving the convenience of your diet, and shakes/protein powder recipes can be quite enjoyable taste wise as well. If you do decide to include a whey protein powder or some other form of protein powder in your diet, just follow the 3 guidelines above and you'll be all set. This simple exercise will also help avoid the embarrasing “premature ejeculation”, allowing you to statisfy your parter, better and long than ever before. If you’ve been following my work and watching my videos, you would know that certain exercises can either increase or decrease your libido, erection strength, hardness and even size, because of hormonal changes. If you didn’t already know, testosterone is the primary hormone that increases your libido, sex drive and “muscle size”. Unfortunately, this hormone starts to decrease around the age of 25. However, certain exercises can increase your decrease your testosterone. For example, doing too much cardiovascular exercise - like running, jogging, etc. can decrease your testosterone because of the increase in your stress hormone, cortisol. TWO things you do NOT want to do. One of the best forms of exercise for increasing your testosterone is lifting weights. However, too much of that isn’t good either. About 3-4x weekly, no more than an hour is just the right amount to increase your testosterone and help improve your libido and sex drive. The Non-Exercise, Exercise However, today I’m NOT going to discuss anything about lifting weights, cardio, etc. I’ve done that in the past. What I want to talk about is a very simple “non-exercise”, exercise... that you can do RIGHT NOW, while watching this video and that’s called, the Kegel Exercise. I call this the “non-exercise” exercise because it requires no gym, equipment or even real movement. Now, some of you may have heard of this. Unfortunately most do it incorrectly. Kegel exercises are done to strengthen the perineal muscles. To “flex” this muscle, it’s very simple. One way to describe how to do it is, by contracting your anus muscle, as if you’re trying to hold in gas. Go ahead and give it a try now... Another way to do it is stop peeing midway through. Thus, as you’re peeing, “contract the muscle” that will STOP the pee, midway through. That’s it - that’s a kegel exercise. Super simple, but extremely effective. You can literally do it anywhere, anytime and nobody would know. Sets & Reps You should do kegel’s about 3x a week to start with. Over time, slowly build up to 5x weekly. Just don’t do it every single day because like any muscle, it requires rest to gain strength. Contract the muscle (holding in gas or stop peeing) and hold for 3-5 seconds. Relax for 1-2 seconds. That’s ONE repetition Do this 10 of these, for 10 repetitions. That’s ONE set Do one set of 10 repetitions, 3x weekly. Then maybe the next week do 2 sets of 10 reps and work up to 3 sets of 10 reps, 3x weekly. You can do it all at once, or break it up 2-3x daily. Nothing it set in stone. What matters is consistency, persistence and patience.
