30,000 Toys "R" Us Workers Losing Their Jobs

Оценок: 572 | Просмотров: 7269
30,000 Toys "R" Us workers across the country are losing their jobs. This is what happens when you have a system that allows private equity firms to destroy profitable businesses and throw workers out on the streets with no severance.

As an employee of Kmart, (ours closed in September).. I feel their pain. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. The Toys R Us store in our city closed just weeks before we did.

Toys R us wasn’t only a huge business it was a wonderland for children and it breaks my heart that the only place where I feel like a little kid is gone. I’m 13 and when I go to toys r us I don’t buy anything but just being there surrounded by toys makes me happy and now it’s all gone

Just face it! Toys R Us shut down cause kids nowadays are into smartphones. It’s common sense.

I cant imagine working for toys r us for 30 years I've work for almost 3 years at toys r us and it has really been hard to try and still come in for your shift when all im doing is taking down empty shelves and looking at a countdown clock they put in untill im out of a job currently its at 16 days
MrAvenger1975 (6 месяцев назад)
Caleb Alexander Yeah, I was a department supervisor for 4 yrs at mine from 2010-14 and there was only a tiny handful of people that had worked for the company for more than 10 yrs. Two of them had even been working for TRU for over 20 yrs! However, that was indeed a rarity amongst the employees in my city. I loved working there, but got increasingly tired of how corporate was running things. Even then I saw the writing on the wall that we were in trouble, but i honestly never saw the complete and ultimate end coming this quickly.

See this is what all these politicians should be doing! Bernie is the hardest working man in politics, he goes out of his way to talk to citizens all over the country so he can help them! And people say he's too old to be president??? He out works the rest who are younger than him already! His campaign ended and he barely took a break! He was back out on the road again right away.
PumpkinsnBlackcats (7 месяцев назад)
I think the fact that parents are buying phones computers and tablets for their children instead of Toys is why they went out of business. All electronics that come from China! Then the uprising of Scamazon!

My total empathy for these people. Up until about a month ago I worked for Sears, which is having a nearly identical thing happening (and whose CEO is buddies with one of Trump's minions). Liquidation, watching the place die, and all that...I very much understand how it is and I feel very sorry for those at Toys R Us having to go through it too. (Sisters in liquidation I guess...) My store was closed in April along with over 100 others (including some Kmarts), and now more are due to close in July or so. Sears will inevitably be one of the next ones out after TRU... killing such a longtime company for their own gain. After TRU and Sears are gone (among others) who will they buy next to bleed dry? Previously it was JCPenney I lost a job at because they were trying not to die, and still aren't doing well themselves. Retail work has become very worrying, like you wouldn't know where to go because you don't want to keep losing job after job because these financial game players are just sucking the life out of them for their own benefit. I've moved on to a less traditional retail-type job as a merchandiser and hoping that is safer, but like many retail area jobs it has the down side of being only part time. I need to find something else to help pad the income, but I just don't know where to go... I don't feel like retail can even be trusted anymore and I'm tired of losing jobs due to dying companies, but so much in my area IS retail and other options are far fewer and have requirements I just can't meet. Retail isn't just for kids who want spending money, its for adults who depend on the income, and yet the situation of it is getting worse and most of these people in DC right now could not care less because they'd rather pat these hedge fund idiots on the back for being so "smart" and business savvy at bleeding these companies dry and could not give less of a crap about who it hurts. Retail is a lot bigger industry than coal, but it goes ignored.

Wht happened to the futuristic view of automation freeing up ppl to not have to work? I see ppl trashing Amazon. I can only tell you as a disabled elderly person Amazon is a life saver for me. I try not to use them but there are times I have no choice. But I live in a failed circumstance of a life. God knows wht would happen to me if I did not have my children. Life in the united states is precarious and not secure. The lady whose husband has health problems. She has lost everything.
Taurus01979 (7 месяцев назад)
Sad thing is, if Amazon takes over much of retail work..... Amazon is a terrible place to be. Was there for two weeks a number of years ago and you could not pay me enough to go back. (Supposedly even their corporate offices are horrible.) I worry about a place like that becoming what retail employment becomes, it's so soul killing.

Imagine how big of a hero Trump would look like if he stepped in and ordered a bailout for TRU because of how shady financial practices put the company down. Americans love TRU. Remember those Carrier jobs that he saved? Yeah, it didn't last a year, they were all laid off. He's all talk when it comes to actually helping workers.
Django Fett (8 месяцев назад)
I learned the real scoop on what happened to ToysRUs from Dan Rather. It was all just shady financial practices that put the company down. Even though TRU is just a corporate brand retail chain, I still have a strong nostalgia for the chain because my parents took me there to pick out a toy a couple times a month and it was a huge deal for me. BUMMER!!! Its very sad to see how it affects the employees.

There should also be a discussion about how being able to order anything online is closing brick and mortar stores across the board, regardless of the companies sales. This is a result of sending good paying, blue-collar jobs overseas to get a 'cheaper' product here. The problem there is nobody goes to these specialty stores due to not being able to afford it. When factory workers were making 45-65K a year, things were better than when those exact workers started working at a grocery store, fast-food restaurant and cell phone store to make ends meet. People feel insecure in their jobs, they don't spend, therefore the economy goes unstimulated.

I imagine you already know that I am much more socialistic in my economic theory than capitalistic. And yet I am not so opposed to capitalism that I have failed to see its relative merits. It started out with a noble and high motive, to block the trade monopolies of nobles, but like most human systems it falls victim to the very thing it was revolting against. So today capitalism has outlived its usefulness. It has brought about a system that takes necessities from the masses to give luxuries to the classes. — Martin Luther King, Jr.

Toys R Us is a labour and real estate intensive retailer. They mostly sell environmentally destructive plastic from Asia. Imagine if these workers got jobs in a green technology factory or infrastructure redevelopment locally that produced something useful rather than needlessly hawking petroleum crap made in a foreign country.

Coldern Ice I would figure out an alternative. I would make whatever I needed. Recycling, repurposing, 3D printing, wood carving. Isn't this why unemployment insurance exists? The premise is that something is rotten if this can happen, but an actual problem is not expressed nor any solutions proposed. It just has sob stories from people that have not saved adequately and sad music. The people losing their jobs should focus on how they can make an economic contribution elsewhere. They are capable enough to hold down a job. If they have grounds, then sue, the executives and the financiers.

Skullman8942 (8 месяцев назад)
@Karen Schumer Well, their effort is usually useless as they are both pawns for the donor class (Republicans and Corporatist Democrats) sure just because their not as evil makes them fine... wrong evil is still evil. Both need to be removed so progressives can take their place, they actually fight for the people's needs. Although its true Republicans try to stop anything and deem everything even remotely left communist or socialist. Heck, they call the corporatist Democrats socialists when they're actually right wing. Republicans don't care what anyone who isn't as far right as them does or thinks they will oppose it without a thought the good, bad and the ugly. Republicans are like mentally challenged infants and Corporatist Democrats are just vile criminals who know how to fuck people over. Corporatist Dems make it seem as If they care for you when they don't and Republicans don't even try to be human beings. They're all vile criminals but one side is arguably insane.

Cmon... I feel sympathy sure, but toy sales are plummeting... its not the 90s anymore. Apps and gaming are what kids these days are brought up on, which is a sad truth but they're just not buying toys like they were. Compare it to how Netflix and other streaming services have killed the Blockbuster Video store market. What you can do is blame Toys R Us for not keeping up with the times and evolving though.

Meshell A (8 месяцев назад)
Really, Bernie- THIS is NOT a private equity firms fault! If we're honest, Toys R US is Bankrupt due to your GIMMIE-FREEBIES Generation. Who literally are choosing to NOT have relationships much less children!? Hellooo, GIVE ME Freebies Gen is therefore *NOT* shopping at TOY-STORE'S because they have no children!! Smh.. WE, for the 1st time, have an ENTIRE Generation that 1st *has NO desire to have a family, much less a husband, wife/children* .. This is just 1 more deceptive video by Bernie! Seriously, if no one's having kid's *&* these Millenials & Boomers have switched to (what is easy for THEM)! They are more likely to shopp online @Amazon! *WHAT DID YOU THINK WOULD HAPPEN WHEN THEIR AREN'T A GENERATION OF BABIES (LIKE IN OUR PAST)* ?!? I shopped at this store & many other's, when my children were little. Now people just aren't willing to do that & they wonder why they are losing job's? Really? STOP SHOPPING ONLINE! My daughter, like many her age are simply waiting until much later in life to have a *planned family* .. Bernie's being deceptive here (surprise) & before you guy's jump down my throat because you can't handle hearing an opposing opinion? Please think when was the last time you shopped at Toys R Us? How about your local Mall? Exactly. Amazon- 2-Day Shipping is easy, you never even have to leave YOUR HOME! Give me a break. You (my daughter included) created this issue by not choosing to have children. It's not a private equity firm's fault, they simply do not have a profitable business & since they don't give free stuff away. Surprise, they now have to shut their doors & yes, people will lose their job's. I personally wish the best for these employees. If you wnat to help, have kid's & shop local (shopping local is very important to job's & your community) or don't complain...
Coldern Ice (8 месяцев назад)
Meshell A I'm not jumping on you for your differing opinion , I'm jumping on you because you're full of beans . I don't have kids, however I spend a lot of bucks for my relatives kids, and we hit the stores at holiday time and birthdays. Lame excuse, to attack Bernie- boy , is your agenda.
ghenulo (8 месяцев назад)
LOL! Who in their right mind would have children? I'd get castrated first.
Meshell A (8 месяцев назад)
Midwest slotgeeks Oh appologies, I thought I said this several times? Millennials, the one's statistically staying at home much longer than the generation prior to them. Are choosing to not get married, to not have a family until much later on in life. I'd go out on a limb & guess that said children's parent's are most likely Gen X'rs or older, not Millennials. Again my original point was when you have a great deal of one generation not having children until much later on in life (than previous gens) I was suggesting that could play a role as to why Toys R US is shutting down. It's not their fault, it's more of a byproduct of the economic uncertainty that they have directly experienced (that is why I assume they've delayed families).. Hopefully, I have answered your question & I will look more into what you keep saying about the 400 million "in profit".. It appears we may just disagree on this one? I appreciate your comment, again will look more into this!
Midwest slotgeeks (8 месяцев назад)
Meshell A who’s not having children again your avoiding the part of 400 million dollar profit. Working in childcare there are plenty of kids plenty
Meshell A (8 месяцев назад)
Midwest slotgeeks Oh, so it has nothing to do with the fact people simply aren't having children (therefore, no need to shop for toys & baby clothes)!! Look, I get it, this generation to an extent grew up with such economic uncertainty in the last 10 year's. Which *has* halted their desire to want/have a family... In the long run, it maybe a wise decision but again when a very large swath of any generation isn't having children like we did a generation back. It makes sense as to why this & many other store's have completely failed! BTW, what's with your & other's visceral "arguments" & calling me crazy? I simply I hold a different view but it doesn't mean there's anything wrong/"crazy" with anyone *(p.s. isn't that what they call a micro-agression, or to demean mental illnesses)? No, I'm not crazy, I'm just don't get why people resort to name calling, like how old are you? I question everything, after this last election & everyone should have the ability, with out being attacked for it. Regardless, I hope you & everyone else have a good evening!

TRU lays off people every year during the slow season and hires people for the holidays. Also the company is bankrupt, so of course people will lose jobs. Bernie’s solution is to raise corporate taxes to give people handouts. That makes no sense and will lead to more lay offs nationwide.

Nah Toys R Us is actually not doing well. Thats why they have to shut down so many locations BERNIE. Thats probably hard to understand for someone who has never worked a free market job. Also many of those workers laid off (not all clearly based on this) are temporary workers that are not going to be retained over the summer slow season. Don’t blame the private equity companies because this would have happened anyways. Toy sales are down across the industry due to Amazon.

Look what Amazon is doing in Seattle right now dragging their feet over a mere 7000 jobs, and you expect they'll magically create 150,000 jobs out of the 30,000 Toys R Us jobs, when every part of the process is being replaced with robots whenever possible?
