I can confirm his reasoning for not getting anorexic and losing all your strength from just eating 50 calories less every day. I'm 6'2'' and 70kg, I worked as a stonemason which is a very strenuous job, heavy lifting job, and then after work I ride my BMX for a few hours each day. Most days I barely eat enough calories to maintain my body weight let alone fulfil the calories i burnt working and exercising, but I have always stayed strong, fit and at the same body weight, never going under 70kg. I have been unemployed the past 10 months now because I hurt my back doing my job and have not been able to exercise or even walk properly. Most days I don't eat much, not because I'm not hungry, but too lazy to cook food, I don't eat junk so everything I eat takes awhile to make. He's a bit confused about the calories from beans being pooped out causing you to consume fewer calories.
We are all capable of stuffing way more calories in our mouth than we need. We typically don't because we're not hungry enough to. But we might stuff a few extra in there either because it tasted good, or we're just slightly more hungry than we should be.
Therefor, if half the calories we consume are being wasted by entering the toilet undigested, our body will not notice those calories at all and just increase our hunger to make up for the calories it was not able to absorb. There will be plenty of room in our stomach, plenty of time in the day, and it will be incredibly easy to shove those calories into our mouth.
In other words, if our body needs 1500 calories and we consume 1500 calories and 750 of them end up in your poop, then you'll just get more hungry and consume another 1500 calories so that 750 more end up in your poop, and your body still gets the 1500 calories that it wants.
Money has fked the food industry. It is full of sugar, dairy, meat. Companies care about profits above our health and the environment. It is good there are people like this guy to spread the word of healthy food. But if we had RBE instead of capitalism we would all be eating like this, and for free.
He just gets better, now he's making sure they got it, going back over it in several ways, where before it was like drinking from a fire hose. It still takes me several times over it to really get it committed to memory (which you need if you're going to eat like he says), but it's definitely a much better presentation than the early days.

Beans are high in "LECTINS" and potatoes are night shade that contain "LECTINS" ,Rice also contain lectins and spike your blood sugar .If you have a hard time losing weight stay away from potatoes and white rice .Lectins are a large class of carbohydrate-binding proteins they are hard to digest (this has the effect that they can overfeed certain species of gut bacteria and lead to "gut dysbiosis" , which now linked to a variety of many health conditions),

Dr. Fuhrman, I think you are a great person that helps many others. There's nothing better than being able to make a living doing just that, thank you! I concur and follow a good deal of what you preach. I'm not big on going for specific foods because of studies about them but I do go for categories, such as what you mentioned with nuts and seeds. You convinced me and I will at them to my limited food selection. I choose almonds and walnuts which can be readily found at good prices. I will add more, but as long as they have no added ingredients and don't have parts removed which contain significant nutrients. In addition, I will change my diet for regular bean consumption. I do make pinto beans. The mashed pinto beans I cook sometimes have an unpleasant texture to me which I must add picante sauce to be palatable. I want to switch to tomatoes, instead, which has no sodium.
Regardless of what I do, the whole food plant based diet I eat as described by the Starch Solution is a fine base. Thanks, again!
Fuhrman did not have a stroke in his 20s,which may be why is looks younger. Starches do improve digestion but so do SOME raw fruits but no much for raw vegetables ,as they can and often do cause digestive problems.Its not speculation about the longevity of Asians... its widely available data. Have you ever read the China Study which is the most comprehensive study of diet ever done.The Asians did eat other things but their diet was about 90% rice.That shows the proven benefit of starches. So NO the Asian diet and longevity is not speculation.....it a matter of record......READ "The China Study".
Joel Fuhrman was born in 1953, and he looks younger today than Mcdougal did 10 years ago. Raw fruits and veggies and herbs increase digestive capability... and starches do not increase digestion, they are just "easier" to deal with when you cook them while having an already weak digestive capability, and starchy foods dilute the digestive potential to a worse state...
It is pure speculation to ASSUME that the Asians lived the longest in the world, and it is also pure speculation to ASSUME that starch is the ONLY thing that Asians used to try to maintain their level of health; Asians were already observed to included *herbs* and *veggies* and drank *tea* and did *exercise* and *ate in moderation*... and it is observed that Asians STILL died earlier than your average raw vegan because raw fruits and veggies and herbs increased digestive capability greater than many Asian diets...
Side note: Bruce Lee ate a lot of starch yet died from an easily curable disease in his 30's...
McDougall was born in 1947 so I think he is older than Fuhrman who was an athlete in his youth. McDougall also had a stroke in his 20s but I agree he is looking old these days. The reason why people dont do better on the nutritarian diet is digestion. Starches like rice and potatoes are very easy to digest and many of the foods Fuhrman recommends are hard on the digestive system.Since the digestive system is so important to the body's health its easy to see why the starch diet is healthier.The history of the starch diet is not speculation....its what people have eaten for centuries especially in China,Japan,Asia,and the green zones where people are the healthiest and live the longest....often without the benefit of medical care.
But that is speculation with no observed data. And claims and speculation about ancient history is not observed data either. The effects of the nutritarian diet and the starch based diet has been observed throughout history, and people had better results with the nutritarian diet. Also notice how both Fuhrman and Mcdougal are roughly the same age range yet Mcdougal looks and sounds older and less healthy than Fuhrman.

Excellent presentation. I believe that Dr Fuhrman is one of the foremost nutrition researchers and practicing medical doctors alive today. Every one of his books contains page after page of the specific cited clinical studies from which he forms his nutritional approach. His book "Eat to Live" Contains 45 pages of cited clinical studies.
I have read many of those studies. It is my observation that Dr Fuhrman makes no guess, and never jumps to conclusions based upon a single study, or a poorly designed study. Rather, Dr Fuhrman forms his opinions based on the most robust studies available -- the medical studies with Hard End Points. Hard endpoints are broad based studies that look at the long term consequences of foods which increase or decrease the risk of death. Increase or decrease the long term risk of cancer. Increase or decrease over the long term the risk of serious heart disease.
The result is not Dr Fuhrman's off the cuff opinion. The result is not the findings of cherry picked poorly designed studies.Rather the result is the most robust health formula based upon the most robust studies known to medical science.
Dr Fuhrman is a rare talent among nutritional researchers and medical doctors. He knows the sound research forward and backward. He is dedicated to staying abreast of the current research.

I have been on a WFPB diet for about 10 months and am down to a 20.5 BMI, a BP of 112 over 65, etc., because of Dr. Fuhrman, Dr. Pam Popper, and the others who are at the forefront of promoting a proper, healthful diet. Most people want to keep their bad habits. Our society loves our steak houses and fancy bakeries. We worship Starbucks Coffee with their sugary drinks. Hopefully one day this will change. Even Walmart now sells fruits and vegetables😊
Before I started my BP was around 125/80, and total cholesterol was around 170. Within a few months BP was 115/70, and cholesterol was 150. After about two years they seem to have stabilized where they are now. I really originally tried this way of eating because of the very uncomfortable heartburn (burning throat) and other indigestion, and asthma attacks (maybe from the acid going into the lungs). These subsided completely after a few months and were much better in a few weeks. Now of course, I see the other great side effects of it. I feel great with the energy and health of my high school days.

I can see why you find McDougall easier to understand: he doesn't use complicated technical terms like 'liver' or reference any medical papers. And he has patronizing pictures of cows to illustrate his points.
I like Fuhrman and think that most of what he says makes sense as far as diet and health, but it bothers me how shamelessly he and many other internet doctors talk about getting rid of all diseases and getting to perfect health in weeks or months. This makes him less credible to me, not more.

justgivemethetruth.. I've been eating this way for almost 8 years and I have literally not been sick once. Not even once. The funny thing is because I am slender now(lost 100 pounds) family and friends are concerned. I feel nothing short of amazing and wish I could help spread this truth but so many are unwilling to listen due to deeply programmed belief systems.

Sort of right but it's a multifactorial problem where the "dominant" factor is diet. There are so many carcinogens thesedays though, particularly excessive polyunsaturates lack of fibre from fruit and vegetables. Pritikin identified this way back in 1980. Processed sugars are empty calories, to say they cause cancer, I doubt it...
