Plato’s Allegory of the Cave - Alex Gendler

Оценок: 32266 | Просмотров: 2430314
View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/plato-s-allegory-of-the-cave-alex-gendler Twenty four hundred years ago, Plato, one of history’s most famous thinkers, said life is like being chained up in a cave forced to watch shadows flitting across a stone wall. Beyond sounding quite morbid, what exactly did he mean? Alex Gendler unravels Plato's Allegory of the Cave, found in Book VII of "The Republic." The best example of it is the simulated universe theory, would you rather believe to that illusion that everything you see is real or would you rather open your eyes to the reality that we're just a simulation... but i rather stay in the cave than to know the harsh reality that i am in the simulation

Recently, my philosophy teacher explained it to us in much more simplified form. He said that our pleasure was just a shadow but the real happiness was doing what is right something like that haha

It’s just the allegory , it’s not one of the real life events , how can be one so sure that others prisoners resisted when the freed one tried to rescue them and told em about outside world.

I’d go to the light because I’m a really curious person. Maybe I wouldn’t go at first, but that would give me time to wonder what the light is like, making me want to go more.

This allegory has good form. Just look at the evidence. If he weren’t deemed a threat to the establishment of the time Socrates would not have been put to death. The truth is in the message, and not the message itself; which could have been told in a myriad of ways.

The prisoners who are chained up all started as small children’s who were born from outside the cave where the sun is out... but as children’s they weren’t able to truly appreciate the nature and beauty of the sun... they later were introduce to come into the cave in order to become accepted into society... through time they have become conditioned collectively by the shadows in how they are taught to see, think and be.. and thus have blinded and chained themselves into Bondage/Ego without even knowing it... for those who break out of the chains to step outside the cave will witness the sun and finally recognize it for the beauty that it is and they themselves now have become illuminated/awakened.

No-one's alone...every understanding of life is representative of the shadows and the light. If we construct our understanding and selfs from our experiences then nobody's wrong. It's that simple! There's no grey area...so called grey areas are just other understandings formed by separate experience.
Zaxor Von Skyler (1 месяц назад)
This always reminds me of the Matrix where Morpheus say: "What is real? How do you define 'real'? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain."

Imo the question is: what is important in life. Knowing what's real? Being happy? Does being happy require you to know what's real? If I think of e.g. movies like Matrix or Vanilla Sky I must say I wouldn't have a problem living in an illusion as long as I'm happy. Unfortunately, intelligent beings would be bothered by uncertainty about whether they are dreaming or experiencing what is real. But considering you will never know the answer you can say that the search for it is pointless anyway. So just enjoy life.

Interesting. We have these abstract concepts that we believe to be true, that we project onto reality. But reality is not precise nor is it the projection we see. It's almost how shocking it is to see our image reversed. We think we look different. But It is us, but not how "we" to see ourselves from habit or how we might imagine we look. There is a common reality shared by people but none of it is actually "real" in the sense that it is imagined by us, and perpetuated by us . We see with our mind and not with our eyes.

Ian Fenn (2 месяца назад)
340 people voted this down......... LOL, are they the ones chained up who get angry when the free tell them about reality? However, how many people really understand the idea that as beings, as souls who are immortal, almost all of what you have been taught about yourself is no more than shadows on a cave wall....... how many of you have experienced yourself outside of the body? check out The Game Maker by Ian Fenn on Amazon.

I told myself when I was little that I needed to know the truth even if it hurts. But now honestly. The light blinds me so much that I'm not sure if it's worth it. It's just too painful. Anyone who thinks he knows the truth or has seen the light is still deep in the cave. Probably you are still one of the prisoners

The comparison is so accurate that it's pretty much just a modern-day interpretation of it. Of course we've swapped the cave for the democrat plantation in the current example. The fact that the slavemasters are so terrified of "their people" having and expressing free thought just goes to show how important it is.

Could you also interpret that the shadows represent concepts like god and the outside world represents the secrets of our universe and existing? we only know so much about the world, questions like "when did it all start?" go beyond our imagination. our human mind just can not imagine that something suddenly existed out of nothing or thst something existed all the time. So we invent an answer. we say it was a god or it was a big bang (even if science is better than religion imo, at certaint questions about our universe its just speculatuion and with that, not better than religion) However, IF a human being would suddenly know all the answers to our questions - we still couldn't comprahend it because it's propably so absurd and so different from what we had ever imagined.
Tom S (2 месяца назад)
The scientific answers are lacking in one thing: purpose. Today's rampant nihilism is due to the fact that nobody has any belief in any greater purpose and that we're all just barbaric animals running around. Putting aside that this strips us of free thought and any kind of accountability, it's also a pretty good way to destroy a society.

Socrates was sentenced to death because we was from Sparta. And in Sparta they do not allow a democracy. He was shaming and mocking Athens for having a democracy and saying how great it could be without one. This idea spread throughout Athens and he was put on trial. He was given the choice to either stop mocking democracy or to die. And he chose to die.

His willpower, inner strength, conscience, or maybe thirst for knowledge. Perhaps it doesn't have to be a person.

The cave is your mind and the ego is the prisoner. The lessons from Plato are two tiered. There is one lesson for those uninitiated and another lesson for the initiates or those bright enough to see it. P.s. it is the light from within that cast the shadow on the wall.
