Plato’s Allegory of the Cave - Alex Gendler

Оценок: 35253 | Просмотров: 2628859
View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/plato-s-allegory-of-the-cave-alex-gendler Twenty four hundred years ago, Plato, one of history’s most famous thinkers, said life is like being chained up in a cave forced to watch shadows flitting across a stone wall. Beyond sounding quite morbid, what exactly did he mean? Alex Gendler unravels Plato's Allegory of the Cave, found in Book VII of "The Republic." Think about if someone were to puch me in the face and take my wallet. And then i gave them my coat and apologizef for anything and say "Its okay man i forgive you" There is this light that shines out of nowhere that no one ever sees. We walk in darkness in life. Jesus is the light and truth.

The shadows are the media and leaving the cave is like when you stop paying attention to television ;)

I understood the text as a way of saying that everybody's reality is different, and everybody's perception of the truth is different. Groups of people, individuals, the whole world. It all varies based on circumstance. The concept of stupidity and knowledge is completely relative. How we understand people is different than how another group may understand people.

Anyone who says they are out of the cave could be out of the cave. The cave is relative. A person could be free in one sense but not another. Do not look at this as if it refers to everything!!

There is no cave. Everyone is living they're own reality. My truth is not necessarily your truth. That is why we can't judge a person if his decisions are right or wrong, cause we didn't get to live their lives. You dont see what they see, they don't see what you see. And what you see is not necessarily right one.

that PLATO prisoners in a cave just made me realize the truth of this simulation . we ARE prisoners this is a prison and we dont know our charges and we need to learn how to live with fellow humans without breaking the laws . if we can become perfect in the eyes of our judges then we wake up from the simulation and are released into society .see i woke up inside my prison cell in base reality and i saw people in lab coats and i started freaking out and they gased me and i fell asleep and woke up in this reality in my bed . this was before i heard about plato and the cave prisoners . now i know it wasnt a dream and plato was right he must have woke up in his cell too ! thats why its always the good ones that seem to die because they reached the end . and kids die too soon because they reached the end of their sentance .

I find Plato's "Allegory Of The Cave" to be superfluous in many ways. Its a trap that enables Plato to win over those who doesn't have the sense to be independent minded in their thinking. In my opinion, I find that the prisoners shackled to the ground, perceiving the shadows of the truth is simply an extension to Plato's Forms in-itself. The Forms do not exist outside the cave...the real world does. In reverse order, using an example from 'The Matrix', the blue pill is actually Plato's philosophy and anyone mediocre enough to believe it. The red pill, in my opinion, is the philosophy of both Aristotle and Saint Thomas Aquinas. We do not live in the abstract realms once we're outside the cave, because the truth is all around us. As a direct realist, I believe the truth is a correspondence between reality and our perception of the real world. And since this bridge of truth is missing from the standpoint of idealists, such as Plato himself, the connection between the two is never made. This is exactly why Plato's philosophy leads to intellectual stagnation, while thinkers like Aristotle and Saint Thomas Aquinas turns the 'allegory of the cave' on its head and shows it for the nonsense it really is, concerning those who don't think the real world truly exists.

We are all hypnotized by our biologies, families, and cultures of origin. There is no escaping this aspect of being human. So, in some respect, we are all destined to live in our own "caves," with some being far more limiting than others. However, as to whose vision of reality is most "wise," "morally right," "superior," "best," "real," "outside of the cave," that too is likely to be determined by our own subjective prejudices and fears. In a deep sense, I don't see any way out of my cave, beyond walking into others' caves. I would further argue that absent similar class background, ethnic background, and mythological belief systems that reinforce what the "truest reality" is, no agreement on this foundational belief is really possible among people. If there is one thing that all of humanity is truly "good" at (beyond devising ways to harm one another), it is protecting and reinforcing their own egos.

I was wondering if I dream in words. Words form images in my head, but also images form words in my head. It seems that with words I reconstruct the world into something I understand. These words I use, they could be shallow and shadow like representations of reality. I wonder if pre-language man saw and experienced the world with more clarity than I with my confinement of all to the reconstruction of reality to my being through the limiting filter of language. I sort of know that I think in my dreams with words. I can lucid dream. I am an artist and I was lucid dreaming, recognized I was dreaming while dreaming, and took a good look at the dream world as an artist. I noticed that the dream world was lit like a Vermeer painting, specifically like the painting called, "The Milk Maid". I was thinking in words as I checked out the dream world, I mean I thought, "Damn, everything is lit like the Milk Maid."

The best example of it is the simulated universe theory, would you rather believe to that illusion that everything you see is real or would you rather open your eyes to the reality that we're just a simulation... but i rather stay in the cave than to know the harsh reality that i am in the simulation

It’s just the allegory , it’s not one of the real life events , how can be one so sure that others prisoners resisted when the freed one tried to rescue them and told em about outside world.

This allegory has good form. Just look at the evidence. If he weren’t deemed a threat to the establishment of the time Socrates would not have been put to death. The truth is in the message, and not the message itself; which could have been told in a myriad of ways.

The prisoners who are chained up all started as small children’s who were born from outside the cave where the sun is out... but as children’s they weren’t able to truly appreciate the nature and beauty of the sun... they later were introduce to come into the cave in order to become accepted into society... through time they have become conditioned collectively by the shadows in how they are taught to see, think and be.. and thus have blinded and chained themselves into Bondage/Ego without even knowing it... for those who break out of the chains to step outside the cave will witness the sun and finally recognize it for the beauty that it is and they themselves now have become illuminated/awakened.

This always reminds me of the Matrix where Morpheus say: "What is real? How do you define 'real'? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain."

Imo the question is: what is important in life. Knowing what's real? Being happy? Does being happy require you to know what's real? If I think of e.g. movies like Matrix or Vanilla Sky I must say I wouldn't have a problem living in an illusion as long as I'm happy. Unfortunately, intelligent beings would be bothered by uncertainty about whether they are dreaming or experiencing what is real. But considering you will never know the answer you can say that the search for it is pointless anyway. So just enjoy life.

Interesting. We have these abstract concepts that we believe to be true, that we project onto reality. But reality is not precise nor is it the projection we see. It's almost how shocking it is to see our image reversed. We think we look different. But It is us, but not how "we" to see ourselves from habit or how we might imagine we look. There is a common reality shared by people but none of it is actually "real" in the sense that it is imagined by us, and perpetuated by us . We see with our mind and not with our eyes.

You do realise guys that "Religious people are stuck in the cave" or anything like that is not different than saying "I am right and you're wrong"?
Ian Fenn (5 месяцев назад)
340 people voted this down......... LOL, are they the ones chained up who get angry when the free tell them about reality? However, how many people really understand the idea that as beings, as souls who are immortal, almost all of what you have been taught about yourself is no more than shadows on a cave wall....... how many of you have experienced yourself outside of the body? check out The Game Maker by Ian Fenn on Amazon.

I told myself when I was little that I needed to know the truth even if it hurts. But now honestly. The light blinds me so much that I'm not sure if it's worth it. It's just too painful. Anyone who thinks he knows the truth or has seen the light is still deep in the cave. Probably you are still one of the prisoners
