Amazon Worker Told to Take Ibuprofen After Breaking Foot

Оценок: 450 | Просмотров: 5960
Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, says he is "very proud" of the working conditions at Amazon. Maybe he should listen to the story of this former Amazon worker who, after breaking her foot on the job, was told to take ibuprofen and finish her shift or go home with unpaid time.

I was a packer and inductor in Tracy, California got a 4 inch gash on my scalp. Sent to amcare for 30 minutes after small cleaning still bleeding sent back to work for my remaining shift. Went to the Hospital for staples and had to pay for it and my workers comp. Appointments was paid by me as well.

"[L]ow-wage workers … dwell in a place that is neither free nor in any way democratic. When you enter the low-wage workplace — and many of the medium-wage workplaces as well — you check your civil liberties at the door, leave America and all it supposedly stands for behind, and learn to zip your lips for the duration of the shift. The consequences of this routine surrender go beyond the issues of wages and poverty. We can hardly pride ourselves on being the world's preeminent democracy, after all, if large numbers of citizens spend half their waking hours in what amounts, in plain terms, to a dictatorship." — Barbara Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed - On (Not) Getting by in America, 2001, https://youtu.be/nb2nrSrU5Z0?t=29s and https://tinyurl.com/y8w799bv "When capitalism is the dominant ideology … it turns everything into a commodity, including human beings and, of course, natural resources. It exploits these commodities until they are exhausted." — Chris Hedges, NY Times Pulitzer Prize winner, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0bRgKrnR0M “I believe that, as long as there is plenty, poverty is evil. Government belongs wherever evil needs an adversary and there are people in distress.” — Senator Robert F. Kennedy, May 6, 1961, Robert F. Kennedy at the University of Georgia, https://goo.gl/pYpdi2 "The trouble is that we live in a failed system. Capitalism does not permit an even flow of economic resources. With this system, a small privileged few are rich beyond conscience and almost all others are doomed to be poor at some level…That’s the way the system works. And since we know that the system will not change the rules, we’re going to have to change the system." — Martin Luther King, Jr., March 27, 1968, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj_vSJM9m1k "The class structure is of our making and our consent… It is the way we have arranged it, and it is up to us to change it. So we are urging revolutionary change." — Dorothy Day, American writer, editor and social reformer, "Poverty Is to Care and Not to Care," Catholic Worker, April 1953 “I am now convinced that the simplest approach will prove to be the most effective – the solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by a now widely discussed matter: the guaranteed income… The curse of poverty has no justification in our age. It is socially as cruel and blind as the practice of cannibalism at the dawn of civilization, when men ate each other because they had not yet learned to take food from the soil or to consume the abundant animal life around them. The time has come for us to civilize ourselves by the total, direct and immediate abolition of poverty.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Where do We Go from Here?, 1967 https://mlkglobal.org/2017/11/23/martin-luther-king-on-capitalism-in-his-own-words/ “I voted for Trump because I wanted some change going on. OK, let's get real. That's a lot of walking, so Amazon needs to provide their workers with a motorized cart of some sort to cover all that ground. Having said that, however, there will always be problems when working with people. These problems need to be addressed individually and with a lot of common sense. When this lady heard a "crack" in her foot, that tells me that she needed to be seen by a doctor and have an X-ray of her foot. Period. That is her supervisor's decision to make. He failed. It's not necessarily Amazon as a company that failed her, but her supervisor certainly did fail her. That doesn't make Amazon a bad company unless the problem is repetitive one and systemic.

I've written Amazon to complain about how they treat workers in their distributor centers. That was several years ago when the first reports of abuses came out. After a groundswell of complaints Amazon announced that they would add air conditioning to all their warehouses and begin hiring employees directly as full time rather than rely on temp.agencies. Unfortunately, it looks like conditions are still very bad in these warehouses.

FROM THE LIBERTARIAN PERSPECTIVE: If Amazon is such a horrible place to work, why do so many people work there? They're not slaves. They can quit and work elsewhere. Amazon has a culture, atmosphere (including hazzards) and pay structure. People willingly working there thus agree and accept to those. Don't like Amazon? Nobody's forcing you to go or stay at gunpoint.

There are cut throat businesses, and then there's Amazon.

All corporations and even many smaller businesses only see the financial impact of the decisions they make. I used to work for BP in Australia and called in sick about 2 hrs prior to shift(had woken up sick but wasn't when I went to bed prior) and even after telling the manager that I had thrown up and had diarrhoea , he still begged me to come in. My shift would have me be the only one on site for half the shift (night) and the only one handling our hot food and making coffees. Now I would much prefer that staff stay home and not handle my food when sick like that....I did not go to work, i told him it would be illegal for me to do so and he reluctantly relented. His main issue was that he had no spare staff to cover my shift as head office don't allow enough wage budget and as manager he had to come in and do it for no extra pay as he is on salary. If a business is not profitable without treating staff like this then close it, most likely is that they don't consider $4 billion profit enough.
Primalxbeast (2 месяца назад)
That's just scary that they tell people not to call 911 because minutes can be the difference between life and death, but they were going to let her leave without consequence and she was whining about not getting paid for the rest of the day? I've had plenty of jobs where you weren't allowed to take time off even without pay regardless of how sick you were. She could apply for workman's comp or something latter after she had proof of the injury but most hourly jobs aren't going to pay you for the entire day just for showing up.

A person could have an allergic reaction to Ibuprofen if you don't know to ask if they're allergic to related OTC medications; like aspirin and other NSAIDs. They could've had their asses sued for millions of dollars if the bone had severed a vessel or nerve. Just bc it's rare doesn't mean it's nonexistent.

I agree with the underlining message of the video but in this case, in particular, is walking a fine line IMO. She says at 1:50 " I've never had such a negative influence on my own health until I worked there." She is overweight. Being overweight causes a litany of problems, having more weight on your feet can increase the risk of breaking a bone. I'm not trying to hate of the women, i myself am about 40 pounds overweight but i acknowledge that that is my fault. Is Amazon at fault for the poor working conditions? Yes. Does the sole responsibility lie on Amazon for her breaking her foot while working? I'm unsure. I empathize with this women and wish the best for her. I just think we should have chosen a better story to make a video about.

They didn’t drop me off at the door. They dropped me off as far from the door as possible. They lady that carried me left before I could walk inside. Where I was put in a wheel chair and put in a cast. They let me go for not working in a cast.

Walking 12 to 15 miles is a lot, but also good exercise, no? Sounds like her injury went misdiagnosed (understandably so due to the circumstances) and she's trying to leverage fame from it. It's hard to understand how someone breaks a bone from just walking.
Karin Maaka (2 месяца назад)
12 to 15 miles on CONCRETE is awful for you. It adds too much stress to your feet and you need really, really good shoes to insulate yourself from the shock. If you are just standing it's not as bad, I work at Amazon and I mainly stand. However if you are a picker, which means lots of walking and never really stopping at all except for a short 30 min break in the day. This will fuck up your feet, it's not the same as walking on the ground, where the soil/grass absorbs the shock. I am not overweight and I'm in good shape and they had me pick for 1 month straight during the holiday season (60 hours a week nonstop walking). I was literally limping the last week or so, barely able to walk. I'm in my fucking 20s and LIMPING. This kind of work is hard even for a normal, young, fit person to do. This woman looks overweight so she is adding even more stress to her feet and can actually get broken bones from it, I totally believe it.

I wasn't at all shocked to find out it is a woman this happened to. This is very common for people to doubt women's injuries/pain etc and assume they are psychosomatic (remnants of archaic ideas about hysteria). Ie - I went to the ER with a busted collar bone and saw my male gym teacher there for a broken pinky toe. Guess who they assumed was more legitimately hurt? They kept telling me at the ER that I probably just bruised it. Nope, it was a clean break. I went to the doctors for gallbladder pain and the doc told me it was probably just heartburn. I ended up at the ER that night. I had tendonitis from work and my boss didn't believe me, even with the workman's comp claim and letters explaining I must rest my wrist. We still live in a very sexist society.

Sideways N They have smeared people like Bernie over Hillary lol
Sideways N (2 месяца назад)
Jose Mendoza no, they slam corruption. They have before and are now. Just because you bend over and accept every single thing one person says like the poor souls in North Korea, over every single established and verifiable source from our government and media that both protected and informed us before our failed business man turned would-be dictator took charge, does not give you any credible means to say that. You stupid a** idiot (or cyber warfare agent)

Gen. Snoball Except when it comes to politicians. The WP likes to slam people who aren’t part of the establishment just like all the other mainstream media.

AST stop believing conspiracy theories meant to destroy any opposing viewpoint of your propaganda, or trying to spread the falsehood for your own gain.

Money seems to take a persons humanity away from them and it need to stop!

Bernie in his speeches actually called out "a sickness that these people have, which is greed" Probably my favorite line from Bernie, because it's so accurate. There are probably people who thought he was being hyperbolic. But he wasn't. Even studies prove money and greed worsen's peoples empathy.

Corporate welfare is alive and well in this country. Things are only going to get worse as the garbage in DC are now dismantling unions.
Rich D (2 месяца назад)
Bryan McManus that's irrelevant. Do you think Amazon is going to let it's employees unionize? Not going to happen. "The attack on unions" is meant for the pork belly public sector unions that are going to bankrupt our nation with their inability to pay out pensions.

luckydoodle77 They’re attacking labor unions but not the FOP. If they went after job and pay security for police, who would protect them from us?

Amazon is miserable to be at. My current job is running in a similar vein, not the injury aspect, but everything else.
