Martin Shkreli is a 32-year-old entrepreneur and company builder. A modern day Horatio Alger story, Shkreli grew up the son of two janitors in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, hustled his way into the hedge fund game, and is now worth at least $45 million. Although he made his money betting against the pharmaceutical industry, Shkreli switched to running a drug company in 2012.
In August of last year, one of his companies acquired the rights to a drug that treats an infection that effects in people with AIDS and other immunodeficiencies.
Over night, the price per pill rose by more than 5000 percent and Shkreli became the poster child for capitalistic greed.
Shkreli ran with the bad-boy image, flaunting his trollish behaviour in the media, He's not your typical pharma tycoon anyways. Over the past year he's also funded an indie record label, claimed he would bail Bobby Shmurda out of jail, and purchased the singular copy of a legendary Wu-Tang Clan album … with no immediate plans to even play it.
In December, Shkreli was indicted on securities fraud charges and is now under investigation by Congress and the Federal Trade Commission for price gouging… so his time in the spotlight is not over yet.
VICE caught up with him at his midtown apartment to meet the man behind the headlines.

+Capitalism is key Yeah, I kept correcting it and my phone refused to correct it. Changing it back to gauging. (I even spelled it correctly just now and it changed) I gave up. So... Anyway, spelling police are complete losers. Talk about Spastic.
shkreli "raises prices on drugs being sold to the largest monopolistic insurance companies in the world* *insurance company jacks up price instead of using their excessive amounts of profit to pay for drug* *sends independent stockbroker to jail for the crime they just committed* *smears him all over the media*
This dude has contradicted his self a couple of times. At first he says they were raising the price of the medication 2 give money to their stockholders blah blah blah, then he goes on to say they use the profits from the increase to pay for research and development for new drugs.
Just a kid trying to represent he saw a bigger picture of this criminalized market. Talking about stocks over suffering, showing the connection? Not at all. This is about profit and not about care. I hope he suffers, and ends up very miserable, shitheads like this...die laughing while knowing they failed. Than sure die laughing...but die sooner than expected. I wonder how he feels when walking his next step out in the open. Knowing eyes and ears follow his every step, heck even in his toilets. You have nowhere to run anymore Shkrelli. Your verdict is comming to get you.
“One drug, even the biggest drug in the world, can’t influence healthcare premiums.”
Immanuel Kant is rolling in his grave.
“Act only according to that maxim whereby you can, at the same time, will that it should become a universal law.”
“For Daraprim to cost more money, fine, if that’s the price I have to pay to find a new medicine for a dying kid, I’ll raise it even more.”
That is about the moral equivalent of Jordan Belfort saying, “I know how to spend it better” in the Wolf of Wall Street.
Now I understand why he is in jail... he was actually speaking about sticking it to the big companies and this is why he is "the villain" he wanted to research and do better for sick people.. he was for people AGAINST big corporations
It seems like he has constantly to proof that he's smarter than everyone else (even if he isn't).
I bet he got mocked in school, made money, now he thinks he's the king.
like "look at me now." if it wouldn't be drugs, he would just be a simple businessman.
there are a lot more evil people out there, politicians, dictators, bankers.
everyone is stealing money from the people. he's just the typical scapegoat.
MARTIN SHKRELI IS MY HERO
listen. hes doing good things in so many ways. notice hes not in jail; thats because he hasnt done anything illegal, meaning anyone could do what he did. including huge corporations who dont give a fuck about you. he sells the pills to the government for $1 which means anyone on welfare who cant afford it gets them for free for little cost to the taxpayer. big companies charge the government more for their pills while charging less for people who can actually afford it. hes exposing the the legal system which allows this tto happen. how can you hold him accountable if you cant hold the big companies accountable. you cant. i truly believe this guy is trying to do good things and honestly anyone who hates is just jealous that they didnt think of it first. plain and simple the difference is he found a way to get rich while also trying to make the world a better place.
He sells it 750 a pill to walmart. Do you think the buildings are using the medications? Are they using it in their morter? No they are selling it to people who need it to stay alive. How many people can afford 22,500 a month for 1 medication?
He's lying about drugs. We pay more from life saving drugs like insulin and blood pressure medications per year, without insurance than Doctor/ER visits. This year alone, I've paid 1,100 dollars in medications. I've amassed a whopping 1800 dollars this year, going to hospital only once, and that had to do with the fentanyl shot that they gave me when I broke my shoulder with no insurance. Let's face facts, these cats are making money from the government based on our lows. You could say, well get insurance... You STILL have to pay out of pocket for that... I'm done...
I think she did a great job of listening without echoing anything he said. There were no smirks or rolling eyes or anything. what are you nagger talking about? What I gathered is this dude was in it for the money and had a vision of becoming the big boss really fast by using shock and disruption and willing to sacrifice other people's lives in the process. But what I also agree with is that he got crushed immediately not because of poor sick HIV positive people or teary-eyed doctors kept up at night with concern for their patients. Walmart and Amazon and online drugstores and their bought politicians crushed this newbie with the punchable face. no heroes!
Isnt there other ways to find a cure then sacrificing other peoples lives that dont get the medicine because they dont have that option? I mean the guys so smart then find other ways then just using profits that are so high to find a resolution at the price of millions of lives.
Dont hate on Shkreli til you do more research on him. I mean the fact hes wearing that shirt should say a lot. 90% of celebrities or anyone with a amass population influence dont wear shit like that cuz they're scared
Look at Martin Shkreli's shirt......Hes tryna expose the elite. HE TRIED TO EXPOSE THE PHARMACEUTICAL CORPORATIONS HOW THEY DO THEIR GAMES AND NOW THEYRE TRYING TO DISCREDIT HIM. He was a common man just like you and me who rose to the top of society and started to see everything for what it truly is
it's so awesome that he is getting raped and beat up everyday, his asshole probably looks like a glazed doughnut.i bet he is begging for some black dick as I type this.hopefully someone cuts his throat while he is locked up!!!
Community pharmacists are the health professionals most accessible to the public. They supply medicines in accordance with a prescription or, when legally permitted, sell them without a prescription. In addition to ensuring an accurate supply of appropriate products, their professional activities also cover counselling of patients at the time of dispensing of prescription and non-prescription drugs, drug information to health professionals, patients and the general public, and participation in health-promotion programmes. They maintain links with other health professionals in primary health care.
