There is no point at all to talk about olive oil other than if you prefer the flavor. It has bad omega-6/omega-3 ratio in it compared to rapeseed oil, which is best for cooking if cooking at all. Flaxseed has one of the best omega-3 ratios but flaxseed oil acts really bad when heated. For your omega-3s, eat flaxseeds, grinded, unpressed. And for cooking, rapeseed oil (canola). Cold pressed canola is also best for salads and when not heated.

Do we believe that “one size fits all” nutritionally? I am not sure (in my admitted scientific ignorance) that my body responds the same as all other bodies respond to each and every health practice.

The third and fourth speaker are right: you can be thin and have heart disease so if oil causes damage to the endothelial cells in your arteries then why would you eat it? Doesn’t make sense. And weight is a proxy for health, I.e., if you are thin you are healthier but you can still have heart disease. When I eliminated oil from my diet I dropped 40 lbs without exercise. One pound of oil has 4,000 calories whereas one pound of vegetables has 100 calories. Do the math!

Interesting debate, it would definitely be a different debate if Esselstyn and T Colin Campbell were there. If you’re on a whole food plant-based diet there is no oil, oil is not a Whole Foods. That’s not to say you can’t have healthy fats in the form of olives, avocados, walnuts ground flax Chia seeds etc. these whole food vegan fat products can also be blended with garlic and lemon to make wonderful dressings and sauces.

Stop lying to the public. Olive oil and coconut oil have proven with many studies that it is heart healthy. Saturated fats are good for you pending on the source. These panel of experts are liars. Tell the people the truth instead of trying to make a profit.

This just shows you some of the ignorance here. Because you cold press olive oil you can’t heat it? Lol that’s not what cold press means. Also, you can’t talks seriously about this issue unless you know that 90% of the olive oil you can buy in American is completely fake. It’s not olive oil. It’s mostly cheaper oils from Tunisia and Southern Europe.

medium chain fats in coconut oil are good for the heart and the brain. Calories in, calories out doesn't work. Look of Dr. Jason Fung, he proves it. High fat, low carb is the best, and I have done raw food, vegan, vegetarian. You need butter grass fed and coconut oil and olive oil, which helps moisturize your joints. No more joint pain. These people are in the whole foods, no meat, raw food cult.

Actually oil does exist in nature. Olives and many other plants contain it. If you eat those foods (provided that they have been properly grown in good soil) in a natural way I cannot see the oil causing any problems. Processing and heating the oil is the danger. I eat coconut oil and grass fed butter. I have not eaten any other oils for many years

This is ridiculous. They are taking a plant based diet and picking it so far apart that you cannot even have oil or cashews because of the calories? I mean, people need calories and they need healthy plant based calories, which can be hard to get when you cut out plant based calorie dense food. So, people just give up, and start eating lots of meat and dairy and sugar which is what is really the culprit effecting their health. Most people will not eat a salad without a dressing, so if they can't have dressing, they just don't eat the salad. If they can't have nuts, what can they have? Just eat fruit and veggies beans and grains? Good luck. That is why 95 percent of the population eats animal products.

If you consume olive oil especially cooked & you are an inactive person or older person, then yeah, it’s not good. But if you’re a vegan & active then you will be fine. Stop the paranoia. Olive oil has stood the test of time. It’s been used for thousands of years going back to times of Pharaohs. Most ppl who develop clogged arteries by 50 -60 are not vegan & consumed worst things than olive oil throughout their lives. A Cold pressed organic olive oil in moderation along with a vegan diet & exercise is perfectly fine. We have “experts” instructing ppl not to eat too many avocados bc of the oil it contains. Insanity.

Oil does not exist in nature. I absolutely refuse to put it my body, or tell anyone to use it. If you want some fatty salad dressing, take a handful of raw walnuts and an avocado, put it in a blender with some citrus juice and garlic, blend that up and ENJOY!!!

Because if they say yes you can eat the smallest amout possable. Yull eat as much as you want. If you can get your fat from a dese food in a prepared meal. Then it's safer to say NO oil. It's a mindset vs just saying yes or no.

Dr. Esselstein showed proof oil is detrimental to endothelial function, Dr. Barnard says it leads to insulin resistance, unless one considers being fat and sick is a good thing, why even discuss it and create more confusion. Saying cold-pressed is permissible is just as silly as those Paleo folk going, but this is "grass-fed".....

13Gladius - That reply displays a lack of knowledge.  Esselstyn's heart disease reversal trials showed results in his patients that were dramatically better than what's seen with standard medical treatment, or with any other approach actually.  That clearly does not constitute "fraud".

alfandomega - Why would our bodies need oil?  It's not like our distant ancestors evolved eating refined extract from rendered olives, with all the nutrients removed. :)   Such oils are relatively recent additions to human diets, empty of nutrients as are many refined foods (like, say, sugar). Not healthy.

Vegetable oils are only healthy when you replace saturated fat with it! Replacing saturated fat with any whole food would probably be much better though.

Esselstyn has said very clearly, "No oil!" He says it damages the arteries. And he has presented the studies to back that up.

Eating whole foods will always be healthier than consuming any oil, but that's not really the point here. Just because nuts are a healthier choice of food than the likes of olive oil, doesn't automatically mean that "all oils damage the arteries" etc. Especially when the scientific evidence that is there suggests completely the opposite, which is that olive oil actually may exert a beneficial effect on the endothelial according to the latest systematic review and meta-analysis: "Values of flow-mediated dilatation (given as absolute percentage) were significantly more increased in individuals subjected to olive oil interventions (mean difference: 0.76% (95% CI 0.27 to 1.24), p < 0.002, n = 8 trials)." "These results provide evidence that olive oil might exert beneficial effects on endothelial function as well as markers of inflammation and endothelial function, thus representing a key ingredient contributing to the cardiovascular-protective effects of a Mediterranean diet. "

If I tell you eating a handful of walnuts or a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds is 10x healthier than the oil, why waste money on oil, also do you have any clue how long those bottles have been on the shelf in the store, cause those precious omegas are very prone to oxidation from heat.

What studies are they ? No studies I've ever come across to suggest the likes of olive oil, flaxseed oil, avocado oil, hemp oil or walnut oil to be unhealthy. In fact virtually all the research suggests these are heart-healthy foods especially the likes of olive oil, which is supported consistently by a massive body of science.
