According to a recent study from The University of Oxford and Said Business School examining the games between 1960 and today, the average inflation adjusted “sports-related costs” of the Summer Olympic games is $5.2 billion and the average cost of the Winter Olympics is $3.1 billion.
...but what is the human opportunity cost of the Olympic Games? Who profits from these athletic displays and what is the root cause of people investing their entire lives in many economically useless activities?

I have to agree with you 100% on this one. However sports make a lot of money. Yes not for everyone. However as long as we watch it it is valuable. If the viewership ratings for the olympics drop only then will the system change. If you watch the olympics then you are responsible for all this. Don't blame the olympics. Blame the brain dead billions of viewers who have nothing better to do with their lives than watch the Olympic circus on tv. It's all about tv and advertising. Advertising dries up if there are no viewers. So in order to stop this ridiculous debt laden scam stop talking about and watching the olympics. No one cares about Brazilian poor people Stefan. We only care about circus for our own lazy pleasure.
I propose to organize a huge movement around the world to stop these circieses !
We should take the olimpics over from the hands of bureaucrats by not allowing any government to finance olimpics or any other sport.
You don't get the real deal about the European Lending bubble. That is that the demographics changed 3 to 4 years Before they started they opened the credit flow. Tat means that Europé never had a chance to pay back what tthey borrowed. Why they did it? Stupidity, Control by debt? I don't know.
IF TRUMP WANTS TO BE LIKE BERNIE AND WIN THE ELECTIONS MUST LEGALISE IT!
Marijuana is number 1 issue for Americans 1 to 45 years old! Millions of People like us want freedom , human rights, they don't WANT interference of the state into our bedrooms or kitchens or restaurants who want to use , serve , eat , smoke and enjoy marijuana, without fear of being put 10 years in jail for one stupid MARIJUANA cigarette!
Also with the HEMP plant you can produce furniture, housing panels, car panels, bio plastic, paper without cutting trees! With the HEMP seeds - which contains 15% protein (highest in the world) you can produce food, bread, cakes , cookies, protein shakes, pizza dough , just name it.. you can feed cows, chickens, or feed the world. Why HEMP is illegal: The BIG PHARMA IS BRAINWASHING US THAT IS "DANGEROUS" !
Our oceans are polluted and the fish and dolphins or wales are dying eating non bio-degradable plastic waste!
The Big Oil wants to stop it because you can make clothes, plastic, while they make plastic out of poisonous oil& diesel products! The big furniture and wood construction industry wants to block it - because you will cut into their profits..and i can go on and on.. So instead of creating wars for oil we can have abundance energy if farmers produce a lot of HEMP and we extract the food and free energy out of it - that the sun gives us!
NOW YOU SEE MY POINT HOW IMPORTANT IS TO LET THIS PRODUCT BE FREE FOR THE MARKET TO USE IT AND FLOURISH THE WORLD ECONOMY. HEMP WAS MAJOR PRODUCT IN THE WORLD UNTIL 1945! ALL LINENS, ROPES, AND CATTLE FEED WAS MADE FROM HEMP, EVEN THE WRIGHT BROTHERS WINGS OF THE FIRST AIR PLANE WAS MADE OUT OF HEMP! Our first American green back dollars were made out of - HEMP!!
WHO BANNED IT.?? THE POLITICIANS LIKE CLINTON'S and Bushes and MerKel who only protect their stock market profits and stifle the free market and people ingenuity!
Just imagine if 1945 the HEMP WAS LEGAL NOW WE WOULD HAVE DIFFERENT WORLD. Bio Degradable HOUSING, NO Pollution FROM GAS AND CAR EXHAUST (you can also produce energy bio-diesel from hemp) , a totally different world and future for our kids. Why is HEMP banned all over the world, its not because its a free medicine for cancer and pain treatment, its because, what they cannot patent it and make profits out of it - they banned it! Its a plant and herb or grass - you can't patent it and make profits , everybody can produce it!
It is like tomato, can you ban tomato! ? So we need to legalise it like WINE and sell it to people over 21 and change our history and future! BY THE WAY, TO UNLEASH THIS INDUSTRY, CAN CREATE MILLIONS OF JOBS AND POSSIBLE 200 BILLIONS OF PROFITS A YEAR.!!!!!!.,,,,...,,.
Brazil should never have gotten the games. They're incompetent on many, many levels.
Also, I'm not defending what Ryan Lochte did but why did that become like an int'l incident? Why were they acting as if the type of things Ryan was describing weren't happening at an alarmingly high rate in that country, during the olympic games? Oh right, he was American. It seems like the whole world hates America.
Regarding issues about the Olympics:
1) Good thing it's only for two weeks.
2) Good thing it's only every four years (and not every year).
3) Tangibles vs. Intangibles,
4) Stockholders vs. Stakeholders,
5) It depends (standard legal response to anything)
6) It's complicated (standard response to everything else)
7) Entertainment vs. Athleticism,
9) There is no item "8"
10) You are only scratching the surface, this could go on for hours.
Your in good company. `Christ the Redeemer' looks down on the Olympics in Rio too :) I always moan about it, then get swept along with the enforced excitement - best make the most of it - can't be long before my country (UK) goes back to being a dismal failure again - mostly making up the numbers and making up excuses why we lost. All this success in global sport makes me feel uneasy.
I think the NWO had some influence on the modern Olympics - I also believe world cup football has that influence - it is part of the bread and circus that pacifies the masses
It has cost many people a fortune in taxes to pay for these festivals - The Olympics have become a wealth redistribution program for the people at the top - the people at the bottom end up having taxes raised or other benefits cut to pay the debt on sponsoring the games -
the athletes are slaves who work for metals, status, and hopefully corporate (endorsements) sponsorship - at least they can make some money and get on their feet if the sponsorship materializes = but the IOC is a bunch of eurotrash self important idiots and they seem to be able to sell their spin on leaders who enrich themselves at the expense of their constituents
Not to decry the finely honed specialist skills of the underpaid athletes, it's ultra competitive, totally nationalistic nonsense designed to funnel money from the poor to the rich (once again), which action the poor applaud, whilst providing for the introduction of new 'security legislation' by concerned nation states. The joke's on us.
table tennis is probably the best sport at the olympics. really exciting to watch. There was no empty seat there, unlike stuff like swimming which draws as many spectators as you'd expect(not that many)
Didn't they have the Olympics in Brazil like twice? It's like I could have sworn they did it in Brazil some years ago. I remember when Bloomberg was in office they wanted to build something in NY so they could have the Olympics and that was shot down.
The plus side for the London Olympics was all the infrastructure benefits, and it created a positive legacy for future Olympic success, as we have seen over the last couple of weeks with Team GB winning many medals.
The Olympics this round seems to be a wasteful bridge to know where--where spending money with little return seems to be the goal. It's progressive redistribution--to no where IMO.
I am seeing the same type of stuff in Europe for another sport I love, Motocross. Last year, the FIM (Federation of international motorcycle, the sanctioning body who runs the world championships of MX, and are very progressive) had a race in Qatar and Thailand. The Qatar event probably had 250 spectators, and it was run at night, (with lights---first time in the sport for this "outdoor" series) so you could not see how many people were not there.
It was a bridge to nowhere, a waste of energy and resources,---and I am sure Honda did not sell one bike.
You forgot about the American press ignoring America's first gold medal and even worse the 6 time medalist Kim Rhode (the most awarded female in any sport ever) in favor of race baiting and riot causing. Or is that a whole other video?
Nope, politicians here lose their positions, spend a year in a comfortable prison cell, get to spend the remaining time in home prison, get offers of good jobs while they're at it (like manager of a prominent hotel) and get elected again when their sentences are done.
I don't understand Liberatarians. This is an NGO, that allows the community of nations (cities) to compete to host the games. The cost to the cities or communities is paid by the cities most of which are locally elected. So if the locals are disatisfied they can then remove the administrators. A list of choices made by communities, and Stefan is annoyed about those choices.
But what do we expect from hypocrites like Stefan Molyneux, he is just pissed that his candidate for US President is a complete failure and his stupid saying "that America doesn't win anymore" is being utterly destroyed by the games. Stefan your commentary much like your philosophy have no basis in fact.
+CyaLatte what you seem to not understand is that social systems are inherent in most species including humans. As such, with no initial government other forms will develop. And the first ones will be religion and trade unions. And they will be more of a problem than democratic governments. And as long as you don't understand that. You can't understand the issues. For I am wrong, show me the evidence for a libertarian model. It doesn't exist, because it cannot exist. In this world with humans at this level of evolution. Maybe come back in a thousand years.
Mate all of what you're saying is under the assumption the Local and associated Federal governments of these respective cities can be relied upon and are not corrupt. Rio and Brazil is not that, it is widely known that their government is corrupt to the nth degree.
720% for Montreal?
As someone who's lived in that city all my life, I'm pretty sure that's actually pretty under budget for something around here.
(though this is a city that builds half an overpass, before discovering that there's a large hotel blocking it's way, then abandons it for all to see, so in a way, good job, Montreal, for only going 720% over budget)
I just think Stefan's bitter because Canada is currently 12th place in the medal count with 14, and are tied with Kazakhstan (hahaha) in the gold medal count with 3. The US has 28 gold medals alone, twice as many as Canada has total. USA! USA! USA!
If they brought in something equivalent to the Roman gladiatorial games, and human blood sports (to the death) then I would actually watch it. But with two provisos; no animals involved, as I am an animal lover, and volunteers only. Then I would be interested. But as the Olympics currently stand? Meh. Now some of you reading this may be horrified, but I bet most people reading this, even if only secretly, actually think the same way as me. Just being honest, folks!
Funny though isn't it; you're the only one who to reply. Guess the others who haven't replied actually feel the same as me, only they're too chicken shit to admit it. Oh, BTW, I've no idea who you are so I guess i'm not your scumbag ex bestfriend! LOL... :-)
Haters gonna hate, people like this don't understand the sacrifices and risk to the body olympic level athletes work with to win at most things the average person would/could never compete at or achieve... they have my admiration, not EVERYTHING is doom & gloom.
stories of kids getting up at 4am to go swimming for 10years , thats abuse, the sadness of everyone who doesnt win......the nightmare of coming 4th........the sudden realisation that 99.9% of the world doesnt care that you ride the worlds most expensive bike one onehundreth of a second faster than that guy who did it last time.
its all awful, except for a few kenyans who get passports to run for their benefactors and at least this time some lucky competitors will get to take the bonus zika home to share with their country
Agreed. Just pointing out that Olympians aren't necessarily paid what their athletic skill would demand IMO. Olympians are supposed to be the elite of the elite athletes- better than other professionals, highly specialized for a single event. I suppose that's where the pay issue comes- in the case of Rousey, there's not a lot of demand for high level Judo skills that you can make money with. She was fortunate to be able to translate those skills into a different sport and become a millionaire, but most Olympians never make that kind of success.
This is no terrible thing in of itself. Rousey spurred herself on by the pain of her ignominy to dominate the Women's MMA scene. The Olympics was originally a venue for amateur athletes to break into the elite levels by ranking in the top 4-5 positions if my history is right. The Olympiad is an event of romance.
Just look at the story of Ronda Rousey, who was the first American female to win a medal in Judo. A few months after the Olympics, she was living out of her fucking car, barely getting by trying to teach Judo. There's no money in any of the Olympian sports for the vast majority of the athletes.
here in Calgary we're starting to talk about another bid, and that's scary if it means even more deficit spending than our current socialist government is already enacting. if there was a way to simply make a reasoned "offer" to host at a low cost, I could get behind it, but I doubt our politicians would do something like that. after all, they're politicians...
I like the olympics. Money is a human creation, a concept, a tool. If we only weigh the currency cost of everything then we give power to our creation. We are humans and we share a small planet, what else do we come together for like the olympics? Fraction of a fraction that is spent on arms, "war", "intelligence"..."surveillance"
---grab a beer and calm your tits Steph
While I agree that there is a lot of corruption, no country is forced into applying to host the Olympics. Similarly, while I agree that the athletes should be treated better, how exactly would you compensate them? Perhaps some sort of mandatory Olympian minimum wage/stipend? Enforce a coach/trainer/athlete pay ratio system?
The difference is that the kind of nationalism that exists during the olympics is a shitty one. more like i don´t care that my country is a third world shithole, we are hosting the olympics yey!! brazilians have no reason what so ever to be proud of their country, and this comes from an optimistic brazilian. we are the most sheeple nation in the world
this video looks somehow different, faster, more natural, i have seen these differences in tv before, can someone explain to me what this technique is ? Has this something to do with 50/60/100 Hz ? More Frames ?
It'a a gamble to be sure, but the theory is sound. If you want to advertise your country and attract foreign investment and tourism, it can work.
When we hosted the winter olympics in 2010 here in Vancouver, people complained - as usual - about the huge cost, but the promise was that investment and tourism would improve. Now, correlation is not causation - and I know Chinese investment is a major factor - but over the last 6 years tourism to Vancouver has been at record highs and the property values have nearly doubled in that time. Was it due to the Olympics? There's no proof, but you could make a good argument that it was a factor in attracting investment.
It does not matter if it costs too much. Goverments need activities like to improve nationality feelings and excitement for their countries. They are part of the system like religion. Give monkeys(i mean homo saphiens ) something to masturbate so they dont question real things. Money does not matter on goverment level. They just balance working class with it.
Ugh, I don't think you'd be able to name a single Soviet or Russian gymnast girl that looked like a man or was even that muscular. You sounded there like a generic MSM victim. USA gymnastics got better only with Soviet coaches, maybe then start blaming Americans too? But no, you won't, even though there were cases from US government for a mass cover up of hundreds of positive tests (from Carl Lewis's mouth) and destroying of doping samples from Olympics.
+Gordon Graham Are you assuring me that there is nothing better Brazil could have spent billions of dollars on? the video discussed how the structures become relatively unused in several other nations.
+Gordon Graham not really. If they wanted to create more construction jobs they could create new hospitals/clinics. Then they wouldn't have to pay the Olympic fee's, the buildings would serve a purpose. and it could reach more parts of the country
The country is paying billions for a few companies to build the arenas. I shouldn't have to tell you that the vast majority of the money doesn't find its way to the construction worker and it doesn't cost that much for the work which is why the price would continue to rise..people are pocketing it!
The main reasons that Olympics are dead boring:
Equestrian (the horses are doing all the work)
Lame TV commentary & athlete interviews
Endless medal celebrations with National Anthems for 1st 2nd & 3rd placed competitors
I could go on, but I'm getting bored just thinking about it.
It's not killing me directly, because I don't watch, but it's killing the poor people in Brazil. The billions of taxpayer dollars being shamelessly poured into what is basically an ego trip for the competitors, could have been more wisely spent on health and education. There are already more than enough international sports events that happen all year around.
Golf and Rugby 7s were just added to the olympics. If you find it boring no one is forcing you to watch it mate. Your going to have to hear about it but that's life. The sports that annoy me are women's football (you yanks call it soccer, and then there's that bratty American goalkeeper who should be in jail for assault but whatever she's a woman so feminism right?), random track and field events that's not helping anyone. I guess my point is that the Olympics tries to offer a little something for everyone and it usually runs over budget because of this. Luckily there are plenty of brain dead idiots who love getting pissed and watching athletics it's not killing you nor me so shut the fuck up about it being boring.
Phew........was watching the 1oom finals, and was thinking that I'd be more impressed if they did something more productive and less dependent. Mind I think that thing Bolt does with his arms is so fantastic I can'tt get enough of it. It's genius Looool
The Olympics have always been a scam and boondoggle. The modern age world wide bread and circuses under the guise of mutual coming together where the current Olympics has shown imo a large majority of athletes from across the spectrum and every country have been entitled, trash talking, belligerent, disrespectful assholes. Such is the way of history, no place to go but down till we get rid of the bad blood in a shake up of apocalyptic levels. Then we reach a new stage of enlightenment till that age becomes rotten by the people pouring the good intention pavement to hell again.
The problem is that a lot of people don't care about this stuff. They figure, eh, there's corruption in the world, and as long as it doesn't affect the outcome of the games, it's going to matter no matter what, so why bother caring about it? This is the line of thinking I get from some people, and they tend to get very defensive about it.
You're fighting the good fight, Stef.
Community pharmacists are the health professionals most accessible to the public. They supply medicines in accordance with a prescription or, when legally permitted, sell them without a prescription. In addition to ensuring an accurate supply of appropriate products, their professional activities also cover counselling of patients at the time of dispensing of prescription and non-prescription drugs, drug information to health professionals, patients and the general public, and participation in health-promotion programmes. They maintain links with other health professionals in primary health care.
