On May 23, 2012, Senator Bernie Sanders criticized the exorbitant prices Americans pay for prescription drugs and the enormous amount of fraud that takes place within the pharmaceutical industry.
Abbott Labs, which agreed last month to pay $1.6 billion for illegally marketing the anti-seizure drug Depakote. The New York Times said the company also agreed to plead guilty to one misdemeanor charge for violating the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act for misbranding.
Abbott Labs agreed to pay $421 million in 2010, along with two smaller companies, to settle charges that they deliberately spiked drug costs by up to 10 times the actual cost in order to boost reimbursements from Medicare and Medicaid.
Pfizer, which paid $49 million to settle charges that a subsidiary defrauded the Medicaid program by overcharging for the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor.
A division of Pfizer pleaded guilty to two felonies and agreed to pay $430 million to settle charges that it fraudulently promoted the drug Neurontin for a string of unapproved uses.
GlaxoSmithKline, which in 2011 reached an "agreement in principle" to pay $3 billion to conclude the company's most significant ongoing federal government investigations into illegal sales and marketing practices for a diabetes drug that was severely restricted last year after it was linked to heart risks.
Merck, which in 2009 reached a $670 million settlement for fraud on patients and Medicare/Medicaid involving a conspiracy with hospitals to give the elderly cheaper drugs but charging them for the more expensive product prescribed by the patients' doctors.
Merck last year pleaded guilty to a criminal misdemeanor charge and paid a $950 million settlement for illegally promoting Vioxx for rheumatoid arthritis before that use was approved. Vioxx was linked to thousands of heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths before it was pulled from the market in 2004.
Johnson & Johnson last year illegally marketed Risperdal, an anti-psychotic medication, to nursing home patients, and paid over $2 billion in fines, a mere 6.3 percent of sales from the drug.
Well, good old Bernie was talking to the wind & dead ears but he is right about fraud, but it just keeps going....... In 2018 they raised all the drugs 1,000% and higher according to Harvard. When a drug goes from $74.00 for a 90 day supply like Flowmax's generic Tamsulosin, to $254.00 for the same 90 day supply... The drug companies just seem to do what they want. I called my insurance company United Health Care, and the Mail order Firm For United Health Care Optum Rx and both told me it was the manufactures raising the cost by 1000%? Then medicare widens their coverage gap? You can't tell me that our government and the drug companies did not cook up some type of deal...... Drugs are no more regulated than the clocks that come to Walmart from China... BTW, we are also not allowed to ship in medicines from foreign countries, but the steel for our cars is ok... This time Trump has sold us retired people out........ The fines and law suits are simply handed down to the consumer so it makes are medicine even more expensive.
if theres one thing that does pay, its crime, it would seem that you just need to be on a the legal side of things and basicly have no moral compass. Its very much fucked up its legal to profit that much from any product, especialy when it comes down the life of a human being. Animals are treated better, and they give little in return.
In Australia we have National Healthcare but we ultimately pay for it in Taxes. Just watched a News Article saying 2 Medications have been PBS Listed, that is Sovaldi and Daklinza for curing Hep C at a cost of $100,000 per pack. Recipients will pay $40 while the Aus Government will pick up the tab. With 250,000 people rushing to the Docs for a Script that $25Billion .. I want to know how they justify $100,000 a pack?
Bernie is right about the drug companies riping off any body that pays for medicine in the USA they will never find a cure for cancer . They are in it for one thing money ,answer for them is to allow foreign drug companies to compete with us , with no tariffs on there imports . The FBI NEEDS TO FOLLOW THE MONEY TO OUR POLITICIANS AND GIVE THEM AND DRUG COMPANIES CEO LONG PRISON SENTENCES.
Community pharmacists are the health professionals most accessible to the public. They supply medicines in accordance with a prescription or, when legally permitted, sell them without a prescription. In addition to ensuring an accurate supply of appropriate products, their professional activities also cover counselling of patients at the time of dispensing of prescription and non-prescription drugs, drug information to health professionals, patients and the general public, and participation in health-promotion programmes. They maintain links with other health professionals in primary health care.
