The BMW 2-Series is the smallest BMW in the family currently sold in North America. It is a 2-door coupe or Cabriolet and sold with two different engines. The M240 is the purest car in the BMW lineup, with a small size, low power tao wight ratio, a powerful 340hp turbo 6-cylinder and sold with a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic. The BMW M240 can be ordered with all wheel drive or rear wheel drive. The manual transmission is only sold with RWD and this model has a 10mm lower ride hight. The BMW M240 is roughly the same size as a BMW E46 from the 1990s and as car models get bigger this really is the choice for buyers who want a small, nimble, fun to drive car with a pure attitude that is missing from many German cars today. This is also the bargain in the BMW line with a starting price of $47,000 CDN and the AWD model starting at $51,000. Compred to the much more expensive M2, with only 25hp more, this is the BMW to choose if you want to have some fun without killing the bank balance.
The M2 would probably be the better purchase if you are going to keep the car longer than a lease term. It will have a way higher resale value than the m240...prices on m235s are already pretty low and its basically the same car, same generation. Not to mention it looks quite a bit nicer. My cousins 330ci zhp was 53k new... my zcp m3 of the same year was 59k. He has put 55k miles on it and would be lucky to get 12k for it now on the used market. Had he sprung for the m3, he would be sitting on a 30 or 40 thousand dollar used car. Real M or nothing.
I love that Sunset Orange Metallic colour. Great review Zack! I lusted after the M235i a few years ago, but it was slightly out of my budget. I have a Golf R now, but I hope BMW still makes these small straight-6 coupes when it comes time for me to upgrade.
That design language is true to form and similar to the older BMW 3-series sedans and coupes. They didn't scream 'performance oriented' until you saw the M badge on their rump. Plus, these designs will hold up for decades (can't speak for the underlying hardware and my body shop buddy says to stay away from 10+ yr old BMWs at least in the North East USA).
Somewhat perhaps, not the worst maybe not the best, but it might grow on you. For me--form follows function so if I like the car otherwise the appearance will be enhanced in my perception. At least it's not remotely American/Asian degree of hideousness, but then we expect a little more from BM.
Top tips, if you were to buy this car, finance it instead of leasing it.
They give you a much lower residual value at the end of the lease than the actual end of lease market value.
So you ends up paying much more than the depreciation, and you are almost "forced" to buy the lease damage coverage.
This car could be the last BMW in Canada to have a Manual Transmission.
It would be a hot item in a few years time in the preowned market.
Finance or cash, dont lease.
Hey Zack, great review. I am not sure if you have driven an M2, but although it has only 25 more hp - to me, it’s night and day , the M2 is a whole different animal. The M2 just feels like it’s on an entirely different level especially when equipped with the MPE. The M240 feels like a sporty car...the M2, like a sports car and it’s so much better looking with the flared fenders and aggressive bumpers. I would be keen to get your feedback and/or review of the M2. Love your reviews!
Ashamedly, I've never been versed in rev-matching and I've just started self-training in the practice. It really makes a difference when downshifting at speed. I haven't found the right foot position, but I'll get there. And, no, I don't race, but I like spirited driving w/in safe limits on public roads.
Also if you're driving at high rpm, you're braking and you're downshifting, matching revs close to redline, high forces of engine braking in high rpms can damage the gearbox. Heel and toe makes for perfectly smooth transition from higher gear to lower, thus saving the gearbox from any change in forces :)
Someone already mentioned that you can upset the rear end by quickly donwshifting without matching the revs and this is the most important aspect if you drive fast on track, but also on wet and slippery roads in normal driving..
Great review Zack. My problem with the M240 is that you can't have a manual with the all wheel drive. What other cars have all wheel drive and a manual option other than M340, A4, Golf R, Focus RS (RIP) and WRX/STi? Currently have a WRX and a desire for more power..
Yea in the m2 2017 n55 the torque its the same with the overboost function 500 nm torque, in the m2 competition its 550 nm, my old m235i was 450 n.m ( sold) the are incredible good perfomance for the money actually. thinking to buy a new m240i
Hey Zack great concise reviews as usual. Can you comment on steering feel especially on center responsiveness? You mentioned in a previous video that early electric steering is numb which I agree. Has this changed with this 240i?
I wish the auto-rev match feature is off by default. And the fact you have to turn off TC to deactivate it is a bummer. What kind of customer would prefer a manual transmission but wouldn't want to rev match and heel-and-toe themselves? It makes little sense to me.
Zack, here is a question for you: I know these are 2 different cars but you happen to like both very much. For the same price a base M240i (no option) you can get a Mustang GT with the performance package, Magneride suspension and the interior upgrade (including sat radio and android auto, Sync 3 with large screen). Which one do you find is the most fun to drive between these two?
Hatchback exists, but they don't bring it to the north american market - M135i /M140i = M235i / M240i. With Mercedes bringing the A250 to Canada, maybe we'll see BMW options at some point in the future as well.
Hey Zack great review. I agree with everything you said. You know on the BMW USA website the 0 to 60 time for the M2 is 4.1 seconds, M240i xdrive it is 4.2 seconds. I'm assuming it's the same in Canada :). I think it's great value for a car that quick that you can also drive all year around.
