A description of the concepts behind Analysis of Variance. Also, see this site: http://www.psych.utah.edu/stat/introstats/anovaflash.html for a "hands-on" experience.

Can you be more specific, please? Is the information incorrect? Does it need better graphics? Yes, I know it needs better sound quality :)

J David Eisenberg (11 месяцев назад)

I've never used SPSS, so I can't tell you. You might want to ask the question on a forum devoted to the topic.

You did an excellent job on the ANOVA presentation. Would like to also see one like this for MANOVA. We are just now beginning to study these in our doctoral classes. Thank you for your excellent work.

what reaction time? second ? i will be pleased if explain anyone

J David Eisenberg (1 год назад)

It's in hundredths of a second. (Even if it were seconds, the result would be the same, since the F statistic is a ratio.)

Karly MacFarlane (1 год назад)

I have a quick question! For the example where you show F (2,12)= 4.27, p= .04, the variation within groups (12) is larger than the variation between groups (2), and i thought if most of the variation was within groups, then there probably wasn't a significant effect and you'd accept the null hypothesis but you said you rejected the null hypothesis. Can you explain to me what I'm misunderstanding?

Karly MacFarlane (1 год назад)

did you only reject the null hypothesis at that point because 0.04 is less than 0.05?

Mahlatse Mashala (1 год назад)

Still the best explanation for a one-way ANOVA on the internet! Thank you so much!

MURALI N (1 год назад)

one of the best explanation . Made is simple , yet so clear.

zidan40o0 (1 год назад)

Thanks for the video, it is very well explained. I just have one note, you never accept the Null hypothesis, you either reject it or you don't reject it.

I was doing an experiment on the effect of sucrose concentration on the fermentation of yeast. I was wondering if it would be possible to do an ANOVA test for this experiment? In your example you have ttwo differences shown with reaction time of the people and the drinks. In my case I only have the difference of sucorse concentration so I don't think the ANOVA test would work. Please correct me oif I'm wrong. Thanks

J David Eisenberg (1 год назад)

If I understand correctly, your independent variable is sucrose concentration, and your dependent variable is some aspect of the fermentation (how much, how fast, or some such). If there are only two levels of sucrose concentration, you can use a t-test. If you have more than two levels of sucrose concentration, a one-way ANOVA is exactly what you want.

Jo Do (1 год назад)

This video gave me lung cancer.

J David Eisenberg (1 год назад)

Turn off the sound and put the closed captions on.

matt wilson (1 год назад)

great explanation, but I must have misunderstood something. can you explain how you got 4.27? i get the whole piece around the degrees of freedom but not sure how you got to that number. thx

heena patel (8 дней назад)

I believe, (n-1) 3 groups - 1 =2 (within group)
15 observers total -3 one for each group. (15-3)=12 (between groups observers)

J David Eisenberg (1 год назад)

I used a program called SOFA statistics that does the ANOVA calculations. The formulas are on Wikipedia in the article on "one way analysis of variance" in case you want to do it all by hand.

Jevitha Lobo (1 год назад)

i dint get what do you mean by reaction time here and how you will measure it? please do the needful

J David Eisenberg (1 год назад)

You could do something like telling the person "when you see a flash of light on the screen, click the mouse button" and then you time how long it takes them to do the click, in other words, how fast they react to the stimulus.

Your videos cleared out all my questions about those statistical tests. Thanks a lot!

Enkhjin. Ganbold (1 год назад)

i am just starting stats course and in this video i didnt get well that what these numbers indicate. Can you please explain these numbers please.

J David Eisenberg (1 год назад)

The experiment is measuring people's reaction times after they have one of the drinks. The five numbers under each drink are the reaction times of five participants in the experiment. (Reaction time measured in hundredths of a second)

Enkhjin. Ganbold (1 год назад)

the numbers which are under the drinks, i think these are the number of people?

J David Eisenberg (1 год назад)

There are a *lot* of numbers in the video. Which ones specifically are you referring to?

I don't smoke (never saw a point in putting things on fire near my face), and I don't drink (I'm mean enough when I'm sober). The hoarseness doesn't bother me at all, but I'll definitely ask the doctor about it next time; thanks.

DerLiesl (1 год назад)

+J David Eisenberg
you can check it our here. https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/003054.htm
I was thinking of cancer of the vocal cords, but I know my exposure is a bit skewed since I've worked as a ENT resident. Almost all of the patients with vocal cord cancer were smokers and heavy drinkers, so if you have that lifestyle I urge you to see an ENT specialist. Otherwise it might just be polyps or swollen vocal cords which are not harmful, but the hoarseness could get worse over time. In that case a speech therapist can help you reduce hoarsness if it bothers you.

J David Eisenberg (1 год назад)

Thanks; recently went to the doctor, and she didn't make any comment on my voice. What is the "something serious" you are referring to?

DerLiesl (1 год назад)

You really should see a doctor about this, it could be something serious.

deniz özdemir (2 года назад)

problem i guess because of your mic or audio system, you would need a "P" filter. :D

Probably the best explanation on one way anova I've seen. Thanks for posting.

B. A. (1 год назад)

RECKANOWHERE I'm glad I'm not the only person who felt this way!
As Einstein once said " If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.
I'm seen many videos about ANOVA's and they were ok at best.
This video is excellent! Very impressed

Thanks for this video! I just needed a quick recap of ANOVA, and you were able to briefly summarize it in less than 5 min. (better than those 25 min videos --'). And btw, you sound just like Steve-O =D

Ide Bagus Siaputra (2 года назад)

Very helpful and useful:)

chitownfisherman (2 года назад)

After taking many stats courses this is probably the best video I have seen to understand the concepts. Its a shame that our teachers get so lost in formulas and the "old way" of doing things. Thanks for breaking it down simply so if people want to know more they have an idea of the basic concept.

shahnawaz khan (2 года назад)

i liked the easy explanation. so to be sure if there are more then two groups we can use ANOVA and if there are less than two, then we can use Z-test or t-test.

Sifundo Sibiya (2 года назад)

thank you very much

Supernova (2 года назад)

Didn't you forget to state the alpha to find out whether to reject or fail to reject the hypothesis?

Supernova (2 года назад)

+J David Eisenberg. Gotcha! I gave you thumbs up for the video.

J David Eisenberg (2 года назад)

+MrSupernova111 Not so much "forgot" as decided not to include alpha in an introductory video. The p-value also tells you whether to reject or retain the null hypothesis.
