I am reading these comments and I am blown away, I am a pharmacy technician at a hospital and it is honestly a lot of fun. If you want to work a job that you feel like you are doing something important it is great. I’m not to sure about retail but hospital pharmacy technician is a great job. I never regret going into work daily and I love it! Also the group of people I work with have basically turned into a second family. I feel like dealing with customers would suck, but at the hospital you are basically working by yourself and it’s good if you are not the most social person.

I'm really confused. I thought all programs were like the one at my college. Mine is only a 4 month program and then you take the exam. Also, for those of you saying not to go to school for it, some states actually REQUIRE you to go education in the field and then take the exam.
Jaebum's Smile (4 дня назад)
Ricki S Yeah my training at my community college is under $2k so I definitely would not pay over that for what I can get for less lol
Ricki S (5 дней назад)
I'm taking it through my local community college as well, and starting in 2020 the ptcb will require you to have formal training to take the exam so you do have to go to an accreditated school. I don't recommend private for-profit schools that charge 20k.

It has to be easier than my last job, working in a call center. RN I'm doing Instacart and Doordash and I see people online bitch incessantly about those jobs only because, they don't have any work ethic. I wonder if it's just the people who lack intelligence and a good work ethic who complain about being a pharmacy tech. Because it must be a lot easier than being a CNA or many other allied health positions. If you're very analytical like me (INTP) I think it's a good fit. I've had family that have done it. So what if junkies yell at me, I had worked for a call center answering for a cigarette company, and I'd much rather have a job that helps more people and is better ethically than working for big tobacco.

It’s definitely true that you don’t have to go to school for pharmacy tech, you just have to take the PTCB exam... lucky for me I didn’t take out a loan so no loss no gain except free money and 3 months of my time( 2x a week class time the rest online for 3 months ) ...I’m studying for my exam now and I’ve already worked at a Walgreens pharmacy ... it’s not as stressful as I’ve viewed on here except some of the pharmacists you work with can be high strung and don’t know how to talk to you( I’ve only came across one like this )

So far all I see is negative comments about this career, and I’m currently going to school for this. I’m having a really hard time with my pharmacy calculations class. I just hope I won’t fail... Then again people on here are saying not to go to school for this program. I’ll see how my future turns out... I just need to have faith that everything will be okay in the end and if it’s not. Then it’s not the end!

Oh wow people actually go to college to become tech I didn’t know that
VF (4 месяца назад)
If you are planning on becoming a pharmacy technician go take the course in a community college near you. These "Technology programs" are just scams. One costs tens of thousands and the other cost ~700$. The result or certification is the same with either Please Please Please do not make the same mistake I did. The job itself is stressful like a lot of people say, it's not just counting pills but at the same time, it's very easy once you get the hang of it about 6 months in. It becomes complete memorization and repetition.

For anyone considering the career I completely say go for it. I am a pharmacy technician and I absolutely love it, even though I do not plan to stay in field nor did I even have interest to start here, I just ended up here lol I get paid very well for what I do if you can’t handle the stress here you won’t be able to handle the stress anywhere else. It’s such a baby stress. Easy work and my pharmacy is incredibly busy. I have had all kinds of jobs from working 911 dispatch to serving at sports bars this is absolutely the most tolerable job I have ever had. also I agree with the first, do not go to school, there are retail pharmacies that will pay you to become a pharmacy tech and from there you can become nationally certified which also is not years of school don’t waste your time by going to school just jump into retail pharmacy and start your journey from there and from there you can build it to wherever you want whether it’s becoming a pharmacists or moving on to an independent pharmacy. It’s also nothing like this video lol

Ariana Duncan I was looking for a comment like this. Coming from a fast food background myself i can say being a pharmacy tech is definitely easier. you want to be a pharm tech TRUST ME DONT DO IT!!!!!!! you will work harder then you have ever you will be belittled you will only make 12.50 you will have to fight for hours and not threw asking but threw how good you are at math you will have to deal with nasty sick rude and sometimes racist people 98 percent of companies only hire for part time and you have to be a god tech to get full time. you will be in extreme debt if u go threw a big college like i did. every two weeks ionly made 495 dollars working my ass of. the phone calls you get are stressful and everybody listens to you deal with it at all times. the phones ring from the time u get there to the time u leave on top of your other tech duties. Asian women pharmacists are super rude like there parents. they will degrade you. you will have to do insurance which takes years to learn and you always feel behind and not good enough. you will have a respectable job but get paid like a dishwasher in a Mexican restaurant. you wont even make enough to fix your car or buy groceries. every time u want to buy yourself something it will be a sacrifice. you have to memories were everything goes on the shelf's which will take u a half a year. that means a half a year of stumbling around looking dumb not being fast enough. you have to calculate drugs for day supplies and it gets tricky and hard with liquids and nasal sprays etc. you have to understand every error that pops up in the que on the screens and resolve them. you have to take drive threw and front pickup while filling and trying to keep up with time frames for the orders. you have to do and the list goes on and on!! you can have all this for 12:50 and they wont give u 8 hours a day unless you no someone in a hospital because thats the only way you will escape retail. they post jobs all the time on indeed and other websites but what they dont tell u is that they already have a person in mind and there giving the illusions that hospital jobs are for everyone but they have already chosen. you will not be able to live alone because of shit pay!! and you will hate or/ want to kill yourself. Run away from tech and dont listen to fake over optimistic people. this job is FUCKING HELL AND BULLSHITTT!!!!!!....you do super hard work for your pharmacist and get 12:50 and the pharmacist gets like 35 or 40...its totally unfair!!!!! I keep it real!!! i keep it really real.....Dont fucking do ittttt!!!

Guys I graduated from carringtoon college in 2011 and let me tell you about my experience. We had little training, teacher didn't care if we graduate or not, was told to find my own external 6 week experience or it will default me to Walgreens pharmacy. I ended up jobless for about a year in sacramento,ca and moved out of state to Kansas. I found an inpatient pharmacy tech job that was perfect for me. No stressful work like retail. With 5 years experience with hospital work now I am at Kaiser and I'm making 35 an hour. I don't recommend going to carringtoon college. Find a cheaper program that will cost you about $5000 rather than to owe $25000 for a certificate and an associate degree.
Kyle Edwards (7 месяцев назад)
I paid 1500
Tia (7 месяцев назад)
$25,000 for a pharmacy technician program is too much. I paid $750 for pharmacy tech school in 2008. Due to bad economy, I had to work my call center job. I took the Ptcb test and got certified. I applied 7 years for pharmacy tech jobs in Virginia with constant rejections, because I didn't have experience. Employers wanted experience, especially retail. I couldn't afford to volunteer. I gave up looking in that field. Good luck that you find a job in Kansas. You can go anywhere with national certification.

ThatBoy Toni (10 месяцев назад)
I was just recently hired by CVS for this. I'm not sure why I got hired because I've heard that it's rare they'd hire you if you don't have a degree or a background in this type of work. I'm not gonna question it though. Better yet I was hired as full time which turns out to be almost impossible these days. It's been like a month since I had my interview, to which I REALLY played it up in that interview. I ought to be a fucking actor. They just put me in the system and I'm set to go to my first scheduled orientation next week. Already ordered the scrubs. They gave me an option to start the 10th or the 22nd. I chose the 22nd but the pharmacist called and acted sorta unsatisfied with that and changed it to the 17th instead to "get me in sooner". Anyway, I've worked retail before. People suck. Most of the comments I've seen are of the shit you'd EXPECT. People are hurting and medicaid/doctors not doing their job. Therefore you'll catch the wrath of all these crippled motherfuckers walking through the door even though it's not your fault. I've heard stories about you can get fired/put in jail for messing up a prescription. I've heard that your coworkers are idiots and leave the insulin out of the cooler and shit. This all sounds like regular retail stuff to me. I'm sure that even though I technically "caught a break" for once in my rotten life that I will most likely get frustrated with the people I have to deal with. Apart from that, is there anything else I can expect from my upcoming orientation? From the job as a whole?
Jessica Tebbens (8 месяцев назад)
ThatBoy Toni Damn, ok then um... Thank you for replying to me in full. I've been told similar stuff by the staff at my store. I have a good feeling I'll just go back to being a photo tech but, I thought I'd at least try it out since the position was offered to me. It's something good to put on an application lol. Hope you found better employment for yourself! Thank you again for your honesty. ❤
ThatBoy Toni (8 месяцев назад)
This is gonna be kinda long winded but: To be honest with you, as embarrassing as it is for me to say: I quit. Once you find out that the job is nothing more than another retail type job it starts to get real annoying. All it is is basically like working at McDonald's or something because you fill an order (count pills) and hand them out the drive thru. The training for me was really crappy because they give you literally ONE day of OJT for Pickup/Production or Drop off then expect you to be able to do all of it like be fast enough to get the medicine to fill (before the queue goes into the red) and be able to deal with people's profiles to refill medicine/deal with whatever problem the insurance is causing so the prescription can turn green. It got really old and frustrating because it's the same retail shit over again, you gotta address people by their last name, you gotta deal with shitty customers who blame you (even though they see you're in training) you gotta deal with doing modules all the fucking time reading like a whole book every other week. When the employees started laying out like the LEAD TECH and the actual head PHARMACIST that was it for me. You just don't lay out of work especially when you have an important position. When they started calling me in on my days off I was like fuck this place. CVS will pay for you to get certified but they only pay for it once I believe like 6 months later. The likelihood of you actually passing the exam is seemingly very slim. I say that because out of like the 8 people in the pharmacy only ONE was certified, the rest had been working there for years and would rather kept making like $9.50 an hour forever I guess. The people I worked with were not that great of a help, they weren't all terrible people but everytime I turned around to try and ask what I should do they were always on their phone or the pharmacist would get pissy and say "ask one of the techs" like you aren't really supposed to talk to the pharmacist but everyone would always be on the phone. They'd tell me to answer the phones but most of the time I had to hand the phone to them anyway because I was presented with something I couldn't do and there's no time for them to show you because "Lane one, Lane one, Lane one" at the drive thru kept going off so you gotta run over there. The job wasn't for me, maybe it'll be for you. Makes you feel bad when you hear some people say "I been with CVS for 9 years" but then again I used to work at Dollar Tree where there's only 1 full time position available in the whole store and a guy I knew who had a part time position that paid 8.75 an hour would say "I been here for 5 years" so I guess it shouldn't make you feel bad to leave when some people are too stupid to realize there's better out there. Good luck whatever you decide.

Pharmacy Tech here... I've worked in 2 different retail pharmacies... HATE working in this field. I am so depressed every time I try to pick up this job again... It's INCREDIBLY demanding, and pharmacists and other techs expect you to know everything without helping you learn.  I honestly wouldn't recommend this job.. you could go to pharmacy or medical school with the amount of stress you'll spend doing a lifetime of Pharmacy Tech work.

You can't become a Pharmacy Supervisor in 2 years. That position is a company's high end big boss position in which you are the boss of ghat district's Pharmacy program. You may oversee 5 to 20 stores. And you have Masters and Doctorates as a Pharmacist. If anything, she mentions becoming a Pharmacy Supervisor - she is talking about a LEAD Tech position. Truth be said, companies do not consider this as an essential career, but a high job loss rotation. It has terrible retention. One way of changing it is to make all Techs Nationally certified, increase pay to a maximum of 58K to $78K, with new responsibilities and licensing like being able to give Immunization and DTap shots, actually becoming a Pharmacy Supervisor over a Senior Lead, Jr Lead, Inventory Specialist, Adjudication Specialists and Customer Service Specialists. We should be able to handle Narcotics, power of attorney when a Supervisor and dispense the drug under Pharmacist supervision and instruction. Maybe do blood pressure and monitoring work too.
Kermit Kardashain (1 год назад)
Please do not do it. Pharmacy Technicians are underpaid and overworked. We do not get all our breaks and do not have a stable schedule. Our hours depend on sales so most techs are part-time or even on call. Patients yell at you all day and you cannot make any mistakes. You have to be perfect. You have to help the front counter, drive-thru, answer phone calls, type the prescriptions, and put medications away all at the same time. There are no jobs and if there is an opening its most likely part-time and many people are applying. You have virtually no weekends off and the schedule is so unstable. One day you will get out at 4:30 pm and the next day you will get out at 9:00 pm, no holidays off and pharmacist are always judging your every move. I quit after 3 years. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not do it you will thank me later

I also have a cna and pharmacy tech certification. I regretted going both in those fields. Its hard to get pharmacy tech job without experience unless volunteering. I had been offered a cna job. I worked a cna job at assisted living. CNA is backbreaking and hard work. Co-workers are cutthroat that doesn't help you. Nurses eat their young and give attitude. Low pay wasn't worth it. I was lucky to get paid shift differential of starting out at $11 an hour. It wasn't worth your insanity. I rather finish my associate degree.

I wanted to have this career but there's many ppl with negative comments on here :(
PSALMSOFSONGS (3 месяца назад)
If you want to do, do it. Some jobs aren't for everyone. It wouldn't hurt to have this certification under your belt to have. So go for it.
Kevin Barboza (3 месяца назад)
sweetcupcakezzz That’s what I’m doing, just scrolling through here just to see if it’s going to be worth it in the end! Someone just commented that school isn’t necessary to become a pharm tech. I’m in school currently and I REALLY need to know if I can just keep going to school or quit and just go straight into retail.
Victor (4 месяца назад)
Dream bigger!!! Be the pharmacist! But when you get into pharmacy school, you’ll realize retail/community pharmacy is the short straw for a pharm.d
Angello! R. (5 месяцев назад)
sweetcupcakezzz Not negative but realistic man. Being a technician, not only your gonna get underpaid, but stress out of rude clients or maybe even the pharmacist. You got to have some enormous patience and a behavior that you don’t care that you’re the yelling bag.

Even a lot of pharmacists are unhappy with retail. You know it is bad when states have to pass laws saying that pharmacists can't work more than 12 hours a day, that pharmacy staff are entitled to bathroom breaks and that they must have a 30 minute lunch break if they work over 6 hours. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/watchdog/druginteractions/ct-drug-interactions-flowers-pharmacy-20170207-story.html https://www.revisor.mn.gov/rules/?id=6800.2160 Pharmacy errors due to task saturation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVtrxWNyNuI&t=80s Pharmacist asking about adult diapers because they feel like they can't take a bathroom break https://www.reddit.com/r/pharmacy/comments/8csl4p/best_type_of_adult_diapers_to_wear_at_work/ This is not all situations, but it is a noticeable problem.

it's ridiculous that there's schooling to do this. this should be a on the job training career.
Alondra Montejano (10 месяцев назад)
You don't need to go to school, there is on the job training and within a year or two, you have to take the exam
dimkacracker (1 год назад)
looks like you can just take the test and become a pharmacy technician, no schooling.

Don't go to school to be a pharmacy tech. You will be wasting your money and trust me you'll need money if you plan on being a career pharmacy technician. Places like walgreens and cvs pay very little. Costco starts a t higher wage but the guys who collect shopping carts make something like $15/hr. Closed door pharmacies and data entry positions on 2nd or 3rd shifts generally pay the best. Hospitals pay higher wages too but you will be exposed to chemo threapy drugs and "lifers" (management who literally came with the building and can't be fired for any reason). Also hospitals love to spend money on things like the naming rights to a pro football team's practice field, then turn around and sat they have no money for raises this year. Another avenue to explore is having "a very specific set if skills". If you can get hired at a pharmacy that uses pyxis or omnicell and you learn the machine inside and out, you can easily find work being the "pyxis guy/girl" at another company or an agency through a contract position. Cliffs don't pay $30,000 for a pharmacy tech training program that will net you a $6-$10/hr job in retail that you can get with zero skills (in many states you will need to register with the state and or have the national pharmacy tech certification)

this is the worst job in history! I worked as a pharmacy tech for 8 years of my life (wasted life) ..please don't go to school for this. it is a horrible and awfully demanding job. totally underpaid. I went back to school for massage and love my job now and make the same amount of money having to work only have the amount of work. customers love massage but hate pharmacies because think people are sick going to pharmacy and get relief from massage and their attitude really rubs off on you. pharmacy life is draining and super exhausting..Don't do it.

@Iridion Prime You have spoken the truth. LTC and hospital pharmacy are decent, but retail is a whole other monster.
Iridion Prime (2 года назад)
a lot of patients are complete assholes with completely unrealistic expectations. They usually can't afford their medications and take it out on the pharm tech/pharmacist. And in turn, the pharmacist lets out their pent up fury on some poor schmuck i.e. the technician lol
henge (2 года назад)
please don't go to school to be a pharmacy technician, it's simply not worth it. if you want to be a pharmacy tech, get a job at a pharmacy, get nationally certified. expect to get have enormous work loads, a pharmacy manager with unrealistic expectations and patients who yell at you everyday

Dont forget about the part where you deny people their medication and ultimately cause them to have to wait for it and risk losing your license to practice pharmaceutical medicine as well as risk jail time. Good luck kids!
