No condom prevents pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) 100% of the time. However when you and your partner are having sex, nothing protects against STDs better than a properly used condom. For those having sex, condoms must always be used to protect against STDs even when using another method of birth control. It is to be noted that even when condom is used correctly, condoms do not protect against infections spread from sores on the skin not covered by a condom such as the base of the penis or scrotum.
Some of the important things to keep in mind while using a condom are:
Check the expiration date as condoms can dry and crack if they're old.
Always choose condoms which are made of latex, which is thought to be more effective in preventing STDs.
You should only use water-based lubricants with condoms. Using lotion, petroleum jelly or baby oil can break down the condom.
You should open the condom packet with your hands and not with your teeth. Open it carefully so you don't tear the condom.
Choose a condom with a reservoir tip to catch semen after ejaculation.
You should roll the condom down until it's completely rolled out.
When you are done you or your partner should withdraw while holding the condom at the base of the penis to prevent the condom from slipping off.
Usually most men and women have no problems in using condoms. But some people sometimes have an allergy to latex.
So using a condom is not always 100% safe but it prevents from spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
