Hello, I just bought a 2012 WRX with 84,000 miles on it and noticed some grinding going from 1st to 2nd. Figured it had to do something with the synchro, but not quite sure exactly. It works fine when double clutching and shifting slower, however. The other gears have no problem shifting.
GearBoxVideo (15 дней назад)
Then it sounds more like clutch release
Kyle Wininger (20 дней назад)
+GearBoxVideo Thank you for the reply. Would you suggest changing the transmission fluid to see if that would potentially smooth out the 1-2 shifts?? Also, I've noticed this happens when the car has been driven around a bit; When I first get on the road, it is completely fine.

Hi Paul, I've started disassembly on a '83 Datsun 280ZX Turbo NWC B&W T5 and have come to a halt for further diagnosis and recommendation. Upon removal of the extension housing I noticed one of the strut keys on the hub to the 5th gear was undamaged laying in the bottom of the housing. The second issue was once again another missing strut key, this time missing from the hub just in front of 3rd gear. This one I found on the large magnet bottom of the case, undamaged once again. Further inspection reveals nothing else damaged, missing, or broken. Normal wear on the shift fork pads, normal metal flaking found and removed from fluid and magnet. All shafts spin smoothly and freely, no weird noises or grinding, etc. How should I proceed? I can easily reinstall the strut key on the 5th gear hub and inspect the springs. As for the 3rd gear hub, what do you suggest I do to install the strut key and/or inspect that assembly? Also, what's your experience on using the bronze shift fork pads over the factory teflon units? Thanks for your input and guidance, your videos are priceless!
Z Man (27 дней назад)
Paul, thanks again for your recommendations. With all the gear oils that have changed over the years since the early 80's when NWCs were first released, what would be the suggested modernly available lubricant product to use equal/close to the properties of the original manufacturers suggested oils of API-GL4 (SAE 80W-90 or Type DEXRON) for summer/spring use in the Midwest US region in a rebuilt NWC? It's been recommended that I should use Valvoline DEX/Merc ATF or on the flip side Brad Penn 023-7729 Multipurpose Classic GL-4 80W90 Gear Oil. What's your take on this? Thank again.
GearBoxVideo (1 месяц назад)
I never use bronze pads, they wear faster
Mr. Datsun (1 месяц назад)
+GearBoxVideo Will proceed with your recommendation, thanks. And as for teflon vs bronze fork pads, worth the upgrade or stick with teflon?
GearBoxVideo (1 месяц назад)
The later 3-4 assemblies had keys with wings to prevent the keys from coming out. Typically as rings wear they create a gap for the keys to pop out. I would change the rings to be safe and upgrade the 3-4 synchro assembly.

Hey Paul on your forged rings that you used in your other video for the Richmond 5 speed what is the slot width of the sychro rings 1-4th
Peter Mayo (1 месяц назад)
Long story short I bought a used Richmond last week, I opened it just to check it out. The Richmond I have has good grabbing rings( they look pretty new) but when I line them up, they block like in your explanation, so I wanted to compare the slot on my rings with yours. Mine measure .398 is that standard?

very interesting video! I have a manual transmission car. and when the car is cold all gears work fine, but after 15-20 min of driving, especially in hot days the 1st, 2nd and reverse gears become difficult to shift in. What is happening? Would changing the gearbox lubricant solve this problem? I thanks for you help!
Miguel Nuno (1 месяц назад)
I solved the problem by lubricating the hinge of the lever actioned by the slave cylinder. I used WD40. Now every gear is shifting very smoothly. Your videos were a great help in understanding how the clutch and gearbox work. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Reverse gear is not engaging properly in Fiat Linea 1.3 L MJD, Diesel, 2012 SEP model,. Rest of the gears are working fine. Only reverse gear is causing problem to engage. No pick up drop. No jerking. What may be the actual problem ? Fiat ASC is saying to replace the clutch kit and release bearing. Car has done 95000 KMS. Around 55000 KMS clutch has been replaced. Present clutch has run only for 40000 KMS. Is there any problem with the gear box ? Or with the clutch ? HARSHAVARDHAN from Bangalore. Thanks in advance.

Sir I really need your help in this clutch sounds which comes after installing new clutch system. There are no hard shifting in gear transmissions, everything is normal. Clutch disc, pressure plate and clutch bearing all lubricated properly wherever required, and no leak in both clutch cylinders. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DVJCERkwS2w Sir, it happens only after replacing with new clutch. And this sound did not come with the old clutch. Any ideas or suspect regarding pressure rings getting hard...? And how to identify hard pressure rings?

It's obvious you are into these trans and your excitement comes through in your voice. You were on a roll in this video and you made everything perfectly simple to follow. I especially like the fact that you show how each style has it's good points and weaknesses. The aspect of the correct type Lube was awesome and to the point. I hear of so many guys wanting to go away from the recommended and try some Snake Oil from some salesman. Now you talk about disaster waiting to happen. It was really nice to see someone else point out how not to mismatch components. I hear guys tell me they took two trans and made one. Later I get it in with shifting issues...and then they wonder why it needs so many replacement components. It's like you pointed out, Rebuilding the engine and replacing all the internal components converts into trans rebuilds. You don't just replace what looks bad or is worn without considering the whole unit. I don't get how that notion all started but it's been that attitude for ages. Some people just don't have a concept of how these work and only know how to change parts but not how to build. I know you'll know what that means. Anyway, another great informative video and I learned some more new things again. Thanks. I find so many sites that show some guy doing some kind of build with his special trick or new component. Have you ever noticed how their project is at one level of completion, the video breaks away and all of a sudden a ton of work's been done? Then when the guy comes back he starts talking like he did all the work off camera...The presenter has perfectly manicured hands, clean fingernails and clean clothes while you see a worker in the background working on a similar mechanical unit? IT always cracks me up. My point is I don't get that impression with you and you add more comments supporting what you're showing. It's certain to me that you are no pretender and I appreciate all the information you share. I am impressed and now a faithful follower of your channel. Keep up the great work. Robert (Auto Doc)

Boy do I wish I had you replace the synchros in my transmission rather than the bafune that did it. It used to grind when shifting, when I got it back, it would not go into 3rd gear without going towards 4th first. Brought it back to the bafune, he tells me theres nothing wrong, you need to adjust the shifter. After looking at your video I can see what could possibly have gone wrong.

Love your work Paul, I own all your books, and have watched all your videos religiously. I don't own anything with a T5 of Muncie 4 speed, but just have a fascination with manual gearbox's. So much that I went out of my way to make sure the car I recently bought wasn't an automatic. Its a Kia Sportage with a 5 speed. So, that brings me to this question, how does the gearbox work for a front wheel drive? As in, how does the shifting work? The gearbox obviously isnt underneath the gear shift, so how does the shifting mechanism work? Would love more info on front wheel drive manual transmissions. Keep the good stuff comin' Paul!
Ian M (8 месяцев назад)
Excellent video. Really informative. I have a problem shifting down from fourth to third which seems to be what you describe in the video as block out position. When shifting up from third to fourth it works just fine but when trying to shift down from fourth into third,The gear lever simply will not select third as if something is simply blocking it but there is no grinding or anything. It just won't go. However, if i double-declutch , then i can select third as long as i rev the engine enough to match the drive speed. Does this sound like the cause of my gearbox woes is the indexing motion issue in your video?
GearBoxVideo (8 месяцев назад)
Yes, typically the whole synchro assembly either has tooth wear or some wear that allows the ring to move and over index.

Let’s see if I have this right. The slider is rotationally fixed to hub. Axial thrust is applied from shifting fork, to outside groove of slider, to inside groove of slider (not shown), to strut keys. Strut keys apply thrust to blocking ring, which is forced onto matching conical surface of selected gear. Strut keys also keep rotational position of slider fixed to blocking ring (with about 3/4 of a tooth of play). This causes a braking action between the slider - blocking ring assembly and the selected gear. Additional thrust applied to the slider overcomes the spring force against the strut keys. As this happens, the slider teeth align with the blocking ring teeth. Also at this moment, since the inclined surfaces of both the strut keys and the slider are no longer in contact with each other, there is no longer axial braking force between the blocking ring and the selected gear. This fact allows the slider to mesh with the engagement teeth of the selected gear.
GearBoxVideo (8 месяцев назад)
Yes, that pretty much sums it up. Since the rotation of the gear will rotate the ring, which is stopped by the key ( called indexing) the slider most overcome the ring blocking the slider

I don't know if you're still replying to these but I have a 85 Nissan 300zx Turbo (Z31) and I have an issue downshifting from 4 to 3, 3 to 2, 2 to 1 unless I'm going very slow. Also if I let the RPMs go above 3,000 in 1st and then shift to 2nd it grinds and almost the same issue going into 3rd. However, after shifting to 3rd I can shift whenever I want going to 4th and 5th. I saw you mentioned to somebody else in the comments that it could be a clutch release issue, but also know that these cars are notorious for synchro issues. Please help!

time to start double clutching, try engaging slow too and see if that helps I think a worn synco might still create a bit of friction

I've got an 03 G35 with a 6 speed manual transmission. It does something odd when I'm shifting into second gear. About 50% of the time, it'll make a an audible clunk sound, as well as a sharp notchy feel in the shift lever. I'm assuming that might be an abrupt shock from the slider and gear not being entirely synchronized? All of the other gears are quite notchy, but 2nd gear is the only one that makes this abrupt clunk. So I'm assuming the transmission is going to expire at some point in the near future, and I'll likely need to replace it.
ThermalWedgie (1 год назад)
GearBoxVideo I hadn't considered that, I flushed my hydraulics a few weeks ago and thankfully didn't notice any leaks, and from what I could see, the slave cylinder piston seemed to be extending all the way. Although, with 90k miles it certainly could be the case. This was the car I learned to drive standard on, and as most people probably end up doing, I have ground a few of the gears (light grinding, but grinding nonetheless). I have to assume that doesn't help my case at all. Of course when I first got the car, I didn't fully understand the mechanics of how to transmission works, but now that I do, I'm beginning to notice how it works. I suppose at worst case, I can buy a new updated transmission (with triple cone synchros all the way up to 4th gear) and a new clutch and flywheel, and that should remedy the problem and give me at least another 100k miles. Thank you for your input and your videos, I've learned a lot!
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
It sounds like a poor clutch release because you have notchy shift feel in all the gears. Poor clutch release due to bad hydraulics kills synchro rings.
Aaron Williams (1 год назад)
Oh simple question when coming to a stop does it do harm to leave the car I neutral when braking to a complete stop?
Aaron Williams (1 год назад)
I have a Genesis Coupe 2010 Track. Under warranty I have had the transmission replaced twice. The vehicle has an issue with second gear lockout in all years and models. Is there anything I can do to prolong the life of my transmission. I am moving from a dualmass flywheel to a solid and new clutch and accessories. A new stiffer transmission mount also but I haven't installed yet. Also will a thicker transmission fluid help before the synchro get worn out?
Aaron Williams (1 год назад)
First of all thank you for responding, means a lot.  What I have found is this system that is in place to encourage more conservative driving habits where a gear is locked out until the rpm's drop down to a predetermined amount and then the car will allow you to shift into the gear.  In this case it is second gear for this manual gear box that I have seen from 2010 to present model Genesis Coupe's.  I have read about it on the dodge challenger that my girlfriend is trying to buy in manual also and some other cars and is at least referred to as a gear lockout.  It seams like it is an option built into the on board computer and not mechanical, but what I have learned from you it could be bad rings not synchronizing the gear and collar but people experience this after owning a new car for a few weeks. The flywheel is worn out I can hear it clicking when I drive at low speeds around 10 mph. Also on hot days the clutch is slipping and the dealer ship will not sell the clutch without the flywheel because a dual mass can not be resurfaced and the stock flywheel is around twelve hundred dollars alone.  A single mass flywheel is a less expensive option and an aftermarket clutch kit will not work with the stock dual mass flywheel. I'm not sure where to start but the transmission has less than three thousand miles on it and I have not had any shifting issues with this third transmission yet. I want to fix the problem before it occurs this time because my warranty will be up in a year and can not just swap another transmission under warranty.  The transmission MODEL is M6VR1 I believe the M6VR2 is in the 2013 to present models.Thank you again sir.
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
Aaron Williams do you mean block out condition? Why would you want to change the flywheel?

So my 4th gear it seems to throw it into gear it doesn't go smooth. I have a monster stage 2, new slave, new throwout, new master, and it also wants to get stuck in 4th after extensive driving in 4th. What would cause this I have read up and many people say synchro. Mine is a T-56 in a 2002 Camaro SS 5.7 LS1
Timothy Benton (1 год назад)
It has the stock hurst which ive read in forums has awful stops and overshifting is common when driving it hard and banging through the gears. Planned on changing it when i replaced all the other components but never got around to it unfortunately
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
Timothy Benton best to get ot apart first. Make sure you are using a shifter with stops
Timothy Benton (1 год назад)
GearBoxVideo do you think it would be wise while they're in there to go ahead and replace 1>2 slider and 3>4 sliders as well?
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
Timothy Benton when the 4th gear Synchro ring wears, it allows the strut keys to pop out behind the slider and it gets stuck in 4th so basically you should change all your synchronizer rings and possibly the three four struts
callofdutyguy9 (1 год назад)
I have new Tacoma with a 6 speed manual. A while back I was in 1st gear coasting and I wanted to shift to neutral stop and the shifter would not come out of gear and it ground when I pulled back on the stick. Clutch pedal was all the way to the floor.
callofdutyguy9 (1 год назад)
GearBoxVideo it is simple. I was driving in 1st gear, I was going to shift to neutral so I could stop, so I press the clutch pedal all the way down to shift. But when I pulled on the shifter I heard grinding and I could not get the shifter out of first gear. I had to let the clutch pedal come half way up and then press it back down completely before he shifter would move.
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
Sounds like a clutch release issue. Unfortunately from the description you give me its hard to diagnose this.
Joe Johnson (1 год назад)
The automobile industry never learns. They still use synchronizers which have a history of being unreliable because it's a cheap design instead of reliable dogs which are durable.
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
Motorcycles have very little weight and torque requirements. The Jerico Boxes on the street will not survive. I service Jerico transmissions and replace the dog systems often. The dog rings get chewed up. Dog systems are cheaper to actually produce. Benefits of face plated dog ring systems is that you will not miss a gear at any RPM. This video has a great example of the increased gap on face plated transmissions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ngXGrg6Y1s
Joe Johnson (1 год назад)
GearBoxVideo Synchronizers are cheap in quality. Jerico and all motorcycle transmissions.
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
Actually dogs rings are cheaper to produce but cause clunky noises in the box due the gaps they have to work with. It depends on what your are comparing this against. I'm curious as to what transmissions you know that have reliable dog ring systems. Can you name any.

hey paul can you change a neatrul safety switch in a t-5 while still in the car a 1991 fox body mustang.
Jason Gordon (1 год назад)
ok sounds good, thanks paul, AMEN,GLORY my friend
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
7/8" But you cannot use a socket because it has wires on it. If you think your switch is bad, cut the wires and try to get a think socket on it. The new switches come with a harness attached. I stock new ones that I have taken off of new transmissions, they are $18.95 plus shipping.
Jason Gordon (1 год назад)
hey paul what size socket is the neatrul safety switch
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
The switch is located on the top cover. It may be hard to get at. On the drivers side towards the front.

now that I know how it works. Can we now have a video how to take transmission apart and replace them my self
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
I have lots of videos. That depends on what transmission you have. Take a look at my channel!

Paul, I have watched you on Eric the car guy and loved that episode on transmission rebuild. I have a thunderbird sc from 1990 that I think needs rebuilt or inspected at the very least. It is an M5R2 from Mazda. I bought the car out west and when changing the fluids I found shiny metal fragments over an inch long in a circular pattern. I'm guessing 1 1/2" - 2 1/2"diameter working their way out of the drain hole. Not sure if they were spacers or what they could have been. I found a set of lined synchro's just like what was used by ford when new. I am certain you probably have an idea. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. When I first drove the vehicle, it seemed like there was a slight grind between 2nd and 3rd gear but shifted well otherwise.

Remember the good old days when you ground every other tooth on the slinder the brass ring and the gear to make it easier to power shift? Good think were all worked at a tool and dies shop. What a time consuming job that was. I thought it would make it much weaker. The guy at the shop had a 57 chey belair  with a built 283 which he shifted at 8,000 back in the day. Ran 11.40. Never did break the tranny I could not believe it. Broke a lot of rear end axles of that losy chevy pig style rear end. So we made bigger axles and still would break the pig at times. He ran a class were you had to run the stock rear end. When he stopped running the class he put a dana 60 in it troubles were over. Stuff was so much cheaper back then. You have to make a lot of money today to do anything. Really is wrecking things.
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
You can purchase slick shifted gears and sliders. You don't have to do the ring because the ring is stationary with the slider and the extra teeth on the ring you'd think you'd have to grind off simply pass through the open spline. You will hold with 1/2 the teeth ( 18 versus 36 ) but the remaining teeth will just get hammered more.

Hi Paul, Watched your video, very informative, thanks. I have a Ram Truck with the Mercedes G56 in it, Factory Spec is ATF+4, but mercedes spec is Mobile Delvac Synthetic SAE 50 weight. When I put in the Delvac, I have issues getting it in to 2nd gear, even when the car is stopped, other gears are difficult but none as much as 2nd. I cut the Delvac with 40% amsoil synchromesh and that helped but it still very hard going in to 2nd. I'm thinking it's viscosity sticking the synchros? I live in the southwest so temp affecting viscosity is not an issue. Do you have any idea what is actually happening with the synchros & the gears since it all happened with the oil change? Thanks
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
If the vehicle is standing still and you are not moving, a synchro ring is not even being used. So something is causing a blockout condition. Maybe the new oil is making the ring stick to the gear, but I have never seen that unless the surface of the gears cone is worn.

what's best oil for a old 84 t5 ford mustang it keeps popping out off hear could it be that a the automatic oil I put in or bad clutch adjustment?
slipininthedarkness I keep (1 год назад)
GearBoxVideo right on thanks for the reply now it's only popping out off 2nd gear you think it will last more than a year? I gust bought it on craigslist for 300
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
Eddie Navarro Falling out of gear is due to worn parts. Oil changes or clutch adjustment isn't going to cure that. You can use Pennzoil Synchromesh or Driven STL for a lube.

im confused about the super t10, does the super t10 have bigger gears and a smaller cone? or the st10 has slarger cone.. ?
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
Nothing between an ST10 PLUS or STANDARD ring will make the transmission shift any better. The "PLUS" ring strut keys are a different design and are stronger than standard keys.
dean truax (1 год назад)
GearBoxVideo what would be the advantage of a "tabbed" ring? I'm not exactly sure of the difference..
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
dean truax ST10 RR assemblies use a tabbed ring instead of a slotted ring. The RR ring will not make it shift any faster.
dean truax (1 год назад)
they called it a road race synchronizer assembly.. ??
dean truax (1 год назад)
so what is the difference between the super t10 plus syncros? I payed more the tranny because apparently they different and better.. I dont really want to rip apart the Trans to find out haha

Hello   Im Jeff..  I,ve watched a couple of your videos. they are great, easy to follow, good pics.I have a question about my TKO 500.  When I coast toward a stop and put it 1st keep the clutch down I get some drag in gear. Its hard to pull out of 1st. If I coast toward a stop in 2nd its fine, I can go to 1st and no drag. What might cause this.Thank You !!

Its the ratios and the rings not being able to stop the gear

Hi Paul - thank you for all the videos - as well the series with Eric on tear down and rebuild of the T5 WC. I have sent Eric a question about the 4th synchro ring.. we have our T5 just about ready to be sealed up but when I look at the 4th synchro ring the inner portion (which has the little 'brake' like pads encircling it) - I notice a few of them look chewed up or worn down. Should we be replacing this ring or could we get away with using it until we can do a complete rebuild of the T5? Thanks in advance for any input you may have. Tyler. PS - love the video on sealing up the T5! Totally helpful and I would have done this incorrectly.. so appreciate all your experience on this. We are putting the 302 HO into a '92 BMW 318is.. quite the swap!
Tyler Sevrens (1 год назад)
i believe it does.. that's helpful to know and will get'r all back together! Cheers!
GearBoxVideo (1 год назад)
Tyler Sevrens thanks for watching. Basically if the ring still has height between itself and the gear usually .020 to. 030 you're OK

Hello Great Video btw ! I have an issue when car is in running it couldn't downshift from 3rd or 4th or 5th to 2nd and 1st.. So i cant downshift either to first or 2nd while in running. I have to stop car or near to idle then need to shift to 1st gear by double pressing the clutch then 2nd gear , then works like butter 3,4,5. So whats the problem and what to repair/replace. Mine is suzuki swift Vdi 2013 1.3L diesel engine, manual transmission , front wheel drive. And i am from India. I need a suggestion as quick as possible.

Clutch pedal free play is an easy way to determine the clutch is realeasing fully...first step anyhow. If there isn't throw out bearing or fork issues...."bent or popped off"..it should tell ya exactly how far its realesing. For example if .75" to 1.25 is pedal free play. And at that setting you have 6 inches of travel . And there is2.25" of free play.instead of 1"....that is a total 4.75 inches....or only 80 ish% of the total throw...one inch less or 5.75" of total throw brings you to 96% of the total....it is my expiernce that you need 90% or more for the clutch to still disengage enough. ......approximately!...all you fuckers....lol....idk...I have issues hhahaha

Your expertise has really paid off for me, I noticed after I reassembled my main shaft on my Muncie that the front synchro/gearset was frozen up, so I popped the snap ring off, pressed the assy off and found out the synchro was one of the wide setups, unlike the other set, so I grabbed the old synchro rings I removed and put the shorter set back on.Teeth were good, so all is well. Im glad I bought your book and watched all of your Muncie videos. Keep up the good work! Oh yeah, thanks for a quality rebuild setup too. :)
