What he doesn't mention is that when unions were strong, they excluded blacks. At the point in history when black people finally started to become equal, this breakup of unions started and there is still a racial gap in income and wealth. I don't see any possibility of the white and black working classes ever getting on the same page to fight for their shared class interests.

The campaign against the labor movement has been so successful and insidious. I know people that would benefit a labor union, believe insane thing about the union, and the propaganda from the right wing has worked.

****   UNIONS can be also REPLACED !!   ****   Simply, ' FAT CATS "  taking the capital to a different countries , leaving stupid workers unions DRY !!   Solution for workers is to create CO_OPS , which is permitted in Capitalism and prohibited in socialism .
martinko40 (10 месяцев назад)
Professor WOLFF is discussing "economics " with Russians , the ones we have a " lot " to learn from . IN CCCP where democracy at work was apply,  all big country fall a part from inside in 1991, NOBODY attack them from outside . Professor Wolff did NOT learn anything from it . Capitalism is still NOT finished and USA is still standing strong .

Yea the government and hurricanes. After katrina gov workers were at my local home depot and lowes and had shopping carts full of chainsaws. These went into storage and were never used. The "big corporations" brought in needed tools and the government clueless dolts created shortages via stupid mass buying of needed tools. There is no reason a government worker should buy up all the cases of plumbers putty at home depot and thus create shortages; but this wanton dumb buying was normal. Ie not their own money thus buy up 100 times what they need.
Andrew Oliver (10 месяцев назад)
The ruling class knows that the bulk of the working class is quickly becoming superfluous through globalization and technology. When more and more people become unemployed, traditional trade unionism can't regain power and the workers turn on each other in their desperation and fear. A divided working class has no direction and no power hence the rise of the alt-right as a fear based response. When fear rules, we all lose. Worker owned cooperatives are at least worth a try. See also LRNA.org for a good analysis of our situation and a possible response.

IT is clear in my mind , that we do not need any LABOR unions. We see disasters like Flint , Michigan where all economy was destroyed by unions .Unions create DEPENDENCY on capitalists who  provide the JOBS for brainless workers . Workers can create CO_OPS companies and enter the REAL world, where competition and Market economy dictate prices and wages .  Workers , STOP to  rely on government for hand outs and creating jobs for you and giving you " permission " to ROB others people's   property . Professor Wolff is BAD economist !!

I want Prof. Wolff to explain to me where in the world there is infrastructure to support a city of Houston's size during a mass evacuation... fucking moron
Barskor1 (10 месяцев назад)
What killed the labor movement? The labor movement to fight big business it became big business as a MONOPOLY on providing labor remember how bad monopolies are? Volentary union membership is essential or you get this implosion.
the capitalist1 (10 месяцев назад)
A marxist economist that advocates for unions, maybe you can explain why la cosa nostra families loved labour unions ? what about black people in unions during their heyday? What about those unskilled workers earning minimum wage? What about corruptions in the Unions? mind you corruption has sunk its talons in every aspect of American life.
David Roberts (10 месяцев назад)
Reagan was a union president.
Siri Erieott (10 месяцев назад)
Wolff has it bang on! No rich person in US society values infrastructure for the benefit of the public because they're culture, education and business ideas demand to ask the deeply selfish question: What's in it for me. Do I benefit in proportion to my earnings. They know the cost of everything but the value of nothing...
richard wysham (10 месяцев назад)
It's not that cut and dried. When the unions became powerful, they fell in to the elitist trap of privilege and nepotism. The good old boys club where it wasn't what you knew, but who you knew that got you the E ride in life. I've worked in the trades for 41 years. Did I see any trade union or working class union at my high school recruiting? Nah! Where were the unions with their big arms, funding trade schools? They didn't have time. They were too busy building hiigh end resorts with unionj funds. They stopped trying to make a total union.Their own greed doomed them. Just as much as the greed of business did.
Earl Grey (10 месяцев назад)

David Kirtley (10 месяцев назад)
It doesn't take a veterinarian to know a pile of bull crap when you see it. Socialist demagogues like Dr. Wolf, politicians and union leaders only view labor as their "useful idiots." They use the mechanism of class envy to keep the masses stirred up. Want a worker's utopia? It is simple to beat the "evil capitalists" at their own game. You don't need a revolution. Out produce them. There are many fine worker owned companies. Work for one that already exists or create your own. You don't need to pay protection money to a union if you stay out of debt so are not trapped in a job where you can be exploited and victimized. Then you don't have to play the game threatening to strike. Just smile and give them the finger as you quit and spread the word on them to protect the next person that wants the job and let the jerks fail. Remember that it is the Socialists that end up with forced labor and "re-education." They didn't avoid evacuating Houston because the roads were crap, they didn't evacuate because it was more dangerous to be out on the roads unprotected than where they were. There just is no way to refuel that many vehicles at the same time and once they start running out of gas, the roads become blocked and people are stranded.
David Kirtley (10 месяцев назад)
Well, at least you have multiple parties to choose from. We are firmly entrenched in a solid one party system at state, county and local level representation where I live. Go pound sand if you are not an insider.
Michael Fay (10 месяцев назад)
Glad you noticed. I too live in Auckland NZ and what could go wrong but a nightmare housing situation. A denatured Labour/Greenie alliance being wheeled in to solve the Housing nightmare in ; Get this 20YEARS??! As a wrinkly I am treated really well. Probably because oldies always vote. But not this one. Maybe find a no hoper party to vote for! For a Socialist Planet to end this Capie horror for ever!
David Kirtley (10 месяцев назад)
boggisthecat But it is not a zero sum game. We are not playing Monopoly. You being rich doesn't make me poor. I am not upset the the rich exist. Many turn to philanthropy (like Bill Gates) and even the others that buy stupid crap like super yachts and mansions drive many people's businesses and provide jobs. The taxes on their multi-million dollar mansions put a lot more money into the local schools than the taxes on my crappy house does. When they pass it down to their idiot children, they usually blow it. I am not upset that Paris Hilton lives a lavish lifestyle distributing the wealth that her parents amassed. It's like the lottery winners that are broke within a few years of winning. Personally, I would prefer to live in a society that people are free to make bad decisions than one that controls what we do. The societies that have had that kind of control have a really bad track record. Yes, someone will trot out Scandinavian countries as a success but we have many metropolitan areas with larger populations than their entire country. It is a silly comparison and by the numbers of their people that want to move away from it, the people are not universally pleased with it either.
boggisthecat (10 месяцев назад)
David Kirtley Poverty is a complex situation. What you need to ask yourself is: would anyone choose poverty? Where I live (New Zealand), roughly one quarter of children grow up in poverty -- about the same as the USA -- and I cannot think of a reasonable excuse for this. Our societies are fundamentally broken, where a tiny wealthy group of people draw ever increasing resources away from the rest. It is either commitment to reform, or revolution. (I would prefer the former.)
David Kirtley (10 месяцев назад)
jamalocaust Poverty in this country is usually self inflicted. Drugs, alcohol, having children that they cannot provide for, and lack of education or marketable skills are the largest culprits. I wish it weren't true but you cannot force them to make better choices. That is part of the cost of freedom. We have lots of programs available but most just reinforce the cycle of poverty. Usually by cutting them off if they start to improve their condition before they are ready to make it on their own. But that is a whole different problem.
Richard Thornton (10 месяцев назад)
Short answer: Unions wedding to the Democratic Party. Average working stiff got nothing!! Consider Hillarys book "What Happened?" Answer: Donald Trump!! Blue collar folks at least the ones that still vote, went for Trump!! Fed up with Obamas Migrants, Politics branding them racist and everything else, Trillions for wars that give us nothing at home!! On and On it goes!! Always remember Rahm Emmanuels line in response to the question of Blue Collar votes. "Where are they going to go??" We now know!!
BigHenFor (10 месяцев назад)
Richard Thornton That's been happening over the last thirty years. Your two parties have become corporate enablers. They enabled the shift in policy from full employment to controlling inflation. That enabled capital shifts out of the US to lower cost labour markets, taking the blue collar jobs with them. They aren't coming back anytime soon. As we can see, once costs go up in China, they move onto the next poor country desperate for investment. American workers will have to wait in line.
Richard Thornton (10 месяцев назад)
My answer: Union Leadership wedded with the Democratic Party!! Result: Average working stiff got nothing!!
David Grzelecki (10 месяцев назад)
What a.............surprise. How original. Big labor isn't responsible for their demise, of course, everybody's out the get them? The insane left will have to come up with a better all purpose excuse than paranoia. Fellas? Hello? You have no persuasive message that has any connection to truth or reality. Left-wing politics is a perpetual psychotic episode.

Barskor1 I am not American but i will guess most workers would love someone fighting for their pay and conditions to be improved becuase it seems to me the only ones fighting for these vital changes are the left, people like Kshama Sawant in Seattle. You know the only people i meet who hate unions are usually Capitalists and buisness owners,i think American workers know who is abusing them or as George Carlin said"The red white and blue dick ,been jammed up their arse everyday"RIP George you are sadly missed.
Barskor1 (10 месяцев назад)
+Deep Thought So have you actually looked at modern union structure DT in the USA? Not likely You would see union membership is mandatory IE a monopoly the administrations of the unions are unrelated to the workers they claim to represent and are essentially a corporation whose product is workers and their labor and the worker has NO CHOICE but to use that perticular Unions services guess who gets abused?
Deep Thought (10 месяцев назад)
Barskor1 I would rather have unions than not,as your ever shrinking Middle Class demostrates. The "idiot" is the worker that thinks corperations are going to protect their rights and pay over profit margins, shareholders and fat cat salaries.I think your just a troll and i have no time for trouble makers.

Hxanitrobenzene , Communism is Classless, Stateless and moneyless society .etc......   according to Marks/ Engels. So far it never happened and I do NOT think it will be "soon " , just to think about this NONSENCE.  Same as "Democracy in workplace " what is Richard Wolff  advocating for. He is advocating for using STATE power / we -the workers -have to capture the state - he said /  to enforce new RULES and create democracy at work . so what "  kind of " socialism is he advocating for ?? Social democracy ??  same crap different package .
Kris Ballard (10 месяцев назад)
The Conservatives have destroyed the unions in America. That's why people are fighting over crumbs.
Hexanitrobenzene (10 месяцев назад)
@martinko40 What is that good reason why workers are not decision makers ? Prof. Wolff does not advocate Soviet Union type of socialism, he advocates communism (in Marx'es terms), i.e. democracy in the workplace. I agree that co-ops can be created in capitalism, however big corporations have a lot of power to destroy them.
martinko40 (10 месяцев назад)
Hexanitrobenzene, I do actually listen to "professor" Wolff and I do NOT agree with him on many issues. Socialism = State capitalisms. I agree on that . However , there is a good reason why worker is only a worker and NOT a decision maker in both capitalism and socialism. The difference is that IN Capitalism workers CAN FORM CO_OPS  and make decisions for them self all day long . IN socialism State is making decisions on workers behave and workers are NOT allowed create and run  theirs own business independent from the state .
Kris Ballard (10 месяцев назад)

if unions where successful taking minimum wage to higher level.. business and corporations will rise the price of goods and commodities and services to make up loses in profits. and those new level of wage or inflation will make the new higher minimum wages not enough again. a time come even higher paying than minimum wages jobs will also fall into the same path. even the middle class will be affected. its a tag of war where the many always loses the game inside a monetary system. and at the end it will not be good for the rest of the people who depends their lives on those jobs.
Ben Chesterman (10 месяцев назад)
government greed on business
Owat Thorne (10 месяцев назад)
yes you can always look at the history, how prices of today are higher than just even 5-10 years ago. its not only in america. its all over the world. almost all country in the world today has huge debt, and it is always the people that will shoulder that debt and will suffer its effects, and even the government and corporations and businesses do takes advantage of the inflation situation putting more pressure on their people..

Not just the absence of calling for an evacuation as you said it's PLANNING-engineering which is really at issue meaning look at the history of the land which is flooded. They=politicians/corporation owners hand in hand, they planned-engineered the paving & building OVER wetlands & on a flood plain at the same time meaning they created-engineered this situation as if on purpose because it was on purpose to profit from the construction & from the inevitable chaos-suffering-destruction which is occurring=this is not some fluke it was planned to happen something they aren't about to tell you instead they will work to expand fear so you look to politicians for answer they already had as their agenda. Some call this ORDO AB CHAO=chaos out of order or rather to engineer chaos into peoples lives so that they ask for your agenda-order, like how in capitalism many corporations build things to break to maintain your insecurity=their power over you.

"We can accurately follow the evolution of the inequality of income distribution in the US from 1913 to the present." -- Thomas Piketty Politicians have an illusion about how they actually run their country. Everyone is limited to the confines of what the global financial system puts into place. For those who missed the revelations about modern day tax havens, The Price We Pay is free on Amazon right now, as is The Price of Fairness. On a personal side note, drug prohibition has yielded the same results alcohol prohibition received, and de-legalization exacerbated the real cost burden onto society while exploiting trumped up statistics, imo. Ending the Taboo: The War on Drugs was equally eye-opening.
