I'm just looking around = I'm wondering about your five-finger discount.

what I learned from the video is, that when you make a person feel good, the person will become so comfortable, that she or he will want to make a purchase, because subconsciously the person now needs to complete the experience

Instead of using “can I help you find something?” Try using “what are you looking for?”. It is a more open ended question and can lead the same response of “I’m just looking around” but it will give you overall better results in your initial engagement with a customer.

Hey Victor, thanks for making this video. I’m a new hire to a store that just opened two weeks ago, and at first I thought people were saying they were just looking because the store was brand new. But it sounds like people will always be saying. I’ve came here looking for help with the start and the close. I’ll be checking out your videos on the subjects.

Hi Victor, hoping you can help me out. I sell "our version of" perfume at the flea market and have my own store there. They are a higher quality than you find in Walmart but of course not as good as the originals. I sell them for $10 each which 1 other vendor has originals for retail and a few versions for $20 and up but a lower quality. So basically my question is some people walk in and think they are getting the originals for $10 and are not willing to give my high-quality our version of a shot. How would I be able to convince them that buying my $10 versions are better than the $80 Originals? Because the first thing that usually ask are these real and I reply with they are real but they are not the originals, they are a high-quality version of the originals and some people don't care but other people just walk right out. I sometimes will say it's an off brand cinnamon toast crunch vs cinnamon squares. Their main concern is the sent does not last as long as the originals. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Victor, I'm new to direct sales. I've had years of experience in customer services etc but this seems so different. I am in double glazing sales. The biggest issue I get is price difference between what we give and what we want to sell for, can you help
Timothy Pitts (10 месяцев назад)
I have a question. I sell phones for a living, if you can call it that. Things have been tough with the minimums, and they have increased a lot over the last year. In doing so, my team has lost a LOT of their motivation. Between that, the ever changing commission structure, and the fact that the traffic has decreased from the high turnover of store managers before me, I find they are not pitching a lot of the products. They aren't caring about their sales because they believe from the start of the month that everybody who comes into the store doesn't want to spend money at all. It's effecting their paychecks and it's effecting their motivation. What's the best way to coach motivation? I fought hard to get to where I am, and I want to hit my goals, but my team is lacking motivation. I would like to change that.
John Radford (10 месяцев назад)
Yes you need to prepare so you don't miss those opportunities when they come.
John Radford (10 месяцев назад)
I have watched and heard so many of these and even though they have their benefits they are still limited. They don't make you a person everyone buys from. There are many variables and situations that need to line up for a sale to still take place. In direct sales your relationship with the person who dishes out the leads is actually more important than your abilities in selling the leads. Never underestimate politics and selling to your superiors. You can be the greasiest salesman on earth if you manager doesn't like you he can make you look like the worst sales man on the planet. However I appreciate he is talking in a retail scenario and to be fair its better than the usual can I help you.
Victor Antonio (10 месяцев назад)
I agree John; life is full of random variables that can affect a sale. The best WE can do is prepare ourselves as best we can and close as many as we can. VA

Thank you so much. Great podcast. I make hats and I used to charge NGN8,000 sometimes NGN10,000 for my hats and still customers say the price is too high. Most of the time, the cost varies with the design. Then I attended a training and I was told that I was charging too little because honestly my designs are beautiful and different that I need to take the price up and find a stockist. So I designed my first collection and I found myself a stockist and we agreed that whatever the cost would be in her store, that's the same it would be with other stockists and individuals. So my prices are higher and my designs are even more beautiful and unique but I still get the "your price is high, I found someone ready to make the same hat for 15,000 naira". Please how do I handle such? I get confused and upset sometimes. I'd really appreciate a response. Thank you sir.
Bridget Eserifa (10 месяцев назад)
Thank you so much. I really appreciate. 😊
Victor Antonio (10 месяцев назад)
BE, if you designs are worth the money than charge the money (price). You're going to have people who WON'T buy on price (20% of them) . Another 20% will pay the price; no problem. It's the 60% you need to go after. 1) Be confident when stating price 2) Remind them it's not price their buying, but a valueable item/design...a WORK OF ART! Client: That's too expensive. You: If it were any hat, you'd be right. But this is a work of art and it's unique. You can't find it anywhere else. So Mr. Ciient, do you want to buy a hat, or do you want to buy a designer look that will impress others? --- Something like that....VA
Bridget Eserifa (10 месяцев назад)
They also pointed out to me that some of them won't patronize me when the price is low because they'd think it's poor quality work. I also did market research and found out that other milliners in Nigeria charge up to 20k for a hat. So my hats are now between 20 to 30k depending on the design. Please help me.

This is a good way to make sure a lot of people turn around and walk back out of your store. If somebody says "I'm just browsing" it really translates to "I'm specifically *not* interested in your high pressure sales bullshit". Not realizing that and continuing to intrude on their time and space is just going to piss people off.

How do I become better at selling cell phones for Sprint? Also how would you go about converting a customer over from one carrier to Sprint? Thanks for your help! You're awesome!!
Straw Berry (6 месяцев назад)
ladistar Probibly not. They don’t get paid or trained to sell effectively, but to simply run a store. Sales is a very personal thing and if associates aren’t paid commision or don’t care about comission, then they’ll provide bad costumer service. Thats why good salesmen end up in realestate and car lots where the sales pay large comissions.
ladistar (11 месяцев назад)
icawn that's pathetic. Most retail sales associates are as dumb as rocks, in my experience. I almost don't even bother asking questions anymore because it's almost guaranteed they won't know the answer. I mean, do these people get any product training at all?
icawn (1 год назад)
I recently did not buy a phone in a Sprint store because the person lied to me on value and provided no insight. She said the LG G5 was a super value at a discounted price of $350. I used that phone in the store to research and learn I was getting ripped off and her 50%-off story didn't have squat for value. Plus, she didn't know the hardware specs for any of the phones. I tried to dumb it down to smoothness in games or intensive apps and she had no clue. She didn't know the 4G bandwidth of the network for the area. She had no clue about network and hardware benchmarking software/websites. I had never purchased a smart phone before and knew more about how they function than she did. She didn't know what new phones were coming to sprint. Told me a phone wasn't going to be available, although I already researched before hand and found it was (the Samsung J7), which was supposed to be released to Sprint that day according to reports. I ended up buying the G5 for $175 refurbished on eBay and a sprint chip for $10, delivered to my door and activated in 3 minutes via phone tech. It is every bit as good as new. I wasted over an hour in that Sprint store and 1hr of driving. She was an assistant manager too lol. The rest of the employees in there either didn't know anything, either, or they just didn't proactively give a damn. They were playing on their own phones most of the time. Forget sales tactics, I'd say know your business first!

The problem that we see in today's society is some people work really hard to get and deserve what they got, making all the sacrifices along the way, yet some jealous haters just by looking at them, they want to get what they have neglecting all the painful process people went through to the extend of even killing the person to get what they have, i hate to say it, but some programming in our society must change, there is tremendous work, pain, disappointment, hardship, suffering, sweat, headache, energy, u name it and that's what we call the process to become what you dreamt to be one day, it is unfair for anyone to jump in and grab what we work hard to get it, just because they believe they are entitle for the simple fact that you got it means they can too, it is not easy mostly if you are self made, i have been with so many, every body want few commit, so let's say you can have it but you need to have what it takes and i hope it involve more than the looks.

Victor. Great video as usual. Quick question, any ideas on how to create scarcity on a product like service or a software/program? I sell Merchant Services so credit card processing doesn't exactly go out of stock ;). Thanks for all the great advise!
Victor Antonio (1 год назад)
Scarcity might not be the answer. In the payment service world, fractional percentages count. I would try to find something I can do or offer that most other do not offer. Scarcity does not work in a commoditized world of products. VA

Oh that's nice. "Let me just highlight something for you." It worked perfectly, used it yesterday and the customer ended up buying the product. Thank you Victor. Let me add something. This technique works very well in the German market, where people in general are more resistent towards sales people. This attitude has improved over the last years, but you can still feel it here and there. You need a really honest, warm smile and an aura of self-assurance to open them up quickly. Else you have a hard time. Highlighting something for those people and then leaving them alone (of course, you invite them to get back to you in case they have questions) is a great way to make a good first impression and get into the sales process smoothly. I've implemented some of your advice in my work. With great results, I should say. So let me give something back. I use this technique when I meet customers who are suspicious towards sales people. You often have only a few minutes to build your credability and if you fail, they drop you. My situation is also very competitive since sales people of our competitors work at the same place which is ok since it is a big retail store. So they see company A, B and C walking around. Now, the customer thinks that a person from company A will try to sell them product A right? There is a pattern here which says: This guy will sell you the products HE wants you to buy, not the one I need. This increases resistance. So what I do is, I attack and break the pattern. First, I acknowledge that I work for A. And then I say something like: Yes, I work for them because I believe in the products and the quality. I think it's the best brand and I only want to work for the best. But I also know all the other devices and I will sure show you all of them. And then I just continiue to show them around. No need to hide your banner. Of course, this should be true. If you don't believe in your company, you are lying and people will notice. Nobody likes liars. Now it gets tricky. My first recommendation is product B or C. This is the part where I break the pattern since he expects me to sell him A. I will tell him a few good things about this product, but I don't hype it. Now I've built credability. If he wanted, he could end the sales process now and buy B or C. But he won't because he wants to see one or two more products. After that it's easy to show him a product of our A company. At that point he will be very open and attentive to your suggestion. Now I present him our device and, of course, tell him about all the great things. He ends up thinking B is okay but A is the real deal. Let me say you have to be really empathic for this technique and you should practice it a lot with small sales to be save with the big ones. Also, honesty is key. I really do have to better product. This is only a way to get the customer to understand and not let his own prejudice trick him into buying something bad. If you do it correctly, your customers will really appreciate what you did for them and come back when they need more.

Thanks Victor

Victor Antonio (1 год назад)
Step 1: Shake your head Step 2: Breathe deeply. Now, Step 3,....joking aside, analyze why you believed it happened. Really analyze what you did right and wrong and simply,...learn and move on. That's what sales is all about. VA
