Coal and West Virginia: A Bad Romance: Derek Teaney at TEDxLewisburg

Оценок: 46 | Просмотров: 4521
Derek Teaney is a ninth generation West Virginian and practices environmental law as a Senior Attorney for the Appalachian Mountain Advocates. Derek has also worked, professionally, as a snake handler and a marine science instructor, and non-professionally as an actor and a homebrewer. A single father, Derek spends his free time teaching his daughter and son the fine arts of sarcasm and absurdity. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

After about 100 years our great or great great grandkids will neither know of you nor really care. They’ll be to be busy living their owns life. Just like we’re doing now. So really I don’t care what happens a

Keep in mind we West Virginia's do not have to cut out coal entirely. Coal has its uses to be sure. We just need more than coal. It's a terrible idea to not diversify.

As a West Virginian, you should be proud of your heritage. A heritage that helped us win World War I and helped get us through the energy crisis of the 1970s. It is the coal of West Viginia that provided for the industrial revolution, allowed for the developments of modern medicine, and brought electrification to rural families throughout the nation. The coal of West Virginia brought low-cost electricity to the northeastern U.S. and the industrial regions in the upper midwest. Coal has provided the energy we need to increase the average lifespan of a US citizen from 50 years to over 75 years in less than a century. Never forget that fossil fuels, including coal, have made your life better!

Great talk. More people need to become aware about the nature of coal and how it negatively affects the state of WV. This should not only have 361 views; it should have millions of views. What many don't realize is what happens in WV affects our entire country. I only hope people will start caring before the lights go out.
