Oct 2007: A violent, drug fuelled gang culture is emerging in New Zealand. Unlike the traditional ethnic gangs, these new street gangs model themselves on LA gangsters and are attracting younger and younger recruits.

Ten year old Sam describes himself as "a little thug from Otara". He spends his time; "stealing bikes, drinking", although he has given up smoking. It's estimated there are 2,000 young gang members in Auckland. The problem has become so serious that some politicians are calling for all gangs to be banned. "We should be simply outlawing them and making it illegal for anyone to be a member of a named gang". But criminologist Greg Newbold believes this; "could never, ever succeed". While political debate rages, some youth workers are taking matters into their own hands. They drive around the gang hotspots trying to befriend the vulnerable kids.

Sad that these young teens have lost culture , family , respect , morals .Not there fault they have a feelijg of belonging in a gang even if its a wanna be one .When I was growing up Mongrel Mob and Black Power were a commen gangs in our community . Never had any problems , kept to ourselves .These two main gangs have been around for years . Theyre both probably the largest gangs in NZ , Thanks for shearing , interesting .
Quit making unwanted children.
Every child born deserve better than this.
(I do NOT condone abortion, but I do understand all the emotions and stuff happening to women that contributes to why it happens)
@Life needs to be respected.@
There are life long consequence to taking the life of any unborn human. To me it's also just as much a crime to go around having unprotected sex and starting one when you damn well know having intercourse will bring about a pregnancy.
These kids are nothing but wannabes! They watched too many Western movies & now think they're thugs! Personally, I find it hard to be intimated by someone talking like that with an accent like that! As far as it was US that copied them, that's obviously bullshit & they damn well know it! I don't remember that movie being called "Straight Outta Auckland"! Hell, I didn't even know they had problems like that over there, but they sure as hell have seen our movies, and heard our music! Anyone of those idiots ever came to some of the places I've lived they would be wishing they were back on the "mean streets of Auckland"!
American Nobody. With all due respect I have a different take on this. Whenever I see such videos as this one about local gang culture in unlikely places. I know that there will be folks in the comments section saying things like "These loosers are wannabes, who have watched too many American movies". Or something like "They would not last a minute in (fill in American hood)". The thing is... nobody watches a few gangster movies and decides that they want to join a gang and become a career criminal. Risking lengthy prison sentences in the process.
Most people join gangs due to overall socio-economic disenfranchisement. Not to mention that they most likely don't have much education and skills to keep them gainfully employed for the long haul. Hence these homegrown gangs in New Zealand happen to find other marginalized youth in other parts of the world that they can identify with on some level, due to similar socio-economic conditions relative to their respective societies. Not because they are trying to copy or be like youth in other countries per se.
I realize that New Zealand is a small country, with the equivalent population of many single American states. Also, guns are way more common in the U.S. Not to mention gun related homicides. That said New Zealand gangs are no joke and they can do serious damage with fists, knives and blunt objects. I dare say some of the gangs in New Zealand would beat the shit out of American gangsters, with no weapons.
And by the way a real man doesn't need to be in tv saying their business or a gang a real man handle business a lone dolo for yah fucks that try to be in a fucking gang that means solo by yourself ass holes
Fake ass gangstas come to USA and you find how the shit is done bunch of pussys please camera guy pay for five of my friends and we stop that little bullshit with no guns just slapping those little fucks
I like how everyone says negative things about these kids but they come from a negative home with nothing thats why they are like this instead of pushing them down with more with negative comments why not try to help them it takes time but you never know
What the f*** was that? He said that we try to be like them get the f*** out of here this f****** young kids wow I wish they will say something like that in my neighborhood "North Philadelphia" PA (Badlands)😈 or we could take this little kids to the real "Oakland California"😧!!! Oh and another thing I can't leave without mentioning that these m************ still stealing cars with screwdrivers and f****** pliers they don't even have a pulley yes but they're gangsters from I don't know what f****** they're at it's the first time I see this country on YouTube it's not even on the news I'm going to call them fake Riders...
Im maori and these are just scum no hopers..weak little boys there a embarrassment to there ppl. This is what these scum gangs do they recruit young kids to peddle there drugs. Theres nothing tough about it
New Zealand crime lol :D most crime is imitation. Most people have the capacity; often, most people get the impulse.
Most of these stupid kids need a good slap. If society hadn't turned into a breast-fed mess of fear where you can't belt your kids; this shit wouldn't happen anywhere. besides in broken homes.. I do feel bad for these brats on some level
What a bunch of sorry ass little punks. The camera people are trying to get their message and story out and what do these little losers do. They steal some of the equipment. Wouldn't be hard to guess where these little pricks are now..
Had a run in with some killer beez down south in the welly area, was walking home from a house party, 2 or 3 of these little shits with fucking machetes chased me for a good couple of minutes and ended up trying to throw the fucking machetes at me, thank fuck they had terrible aim must say gets your heart racing.
Do not look at these clowns they're nothing but puppets the older members use to take sentences when they kill someone. Real new Zealand gangsters are not like those African American gangs, the gang violence you see on the street is the tip of the ice berg, barley if any violence crimes we commit are reported to the police, we function on our own laws and judgment because as it was said the gangs here work more like traditional Maori tribes, culture separates us from African American cliques or gangs because sadly our dark skin brothers over there had their culture and identity stripped from the white man, but we come from the same deep seeded roots of poverty, racism and hatred for the white man, our government has worked hard to amend this and it shows as our streets slowly get cleaner, and our boys are seeing that the path to success and getting out of the poverty our family may never escape is to educate ourselves and our people. America has guns and I'm glad guns are harder to get in NZ or we would have had just as many issues.
O.Gs In New Zealand have seen many things in their times, and much can be learned from elder gang members as they are much like tribe elders.
Hip Hop? Really? How about just crime. Lol
You ban anything you increase rebellion. Invest into the youth. Take the initiative to do what has not been done before and watch a reverse of seeds of rebellion grow into success amongst the youth.
All gangs worldwide should be rounded up and Severely Tortured than worked to death in a labor Concentration camp! The world shouldn't be putting up with this Bullshit. It doesn't matter how old you are because if you can rape rob and murder someone, than you are eligible to have your skull bashed in with no mercy! Also by law have the family members witness the government seeing their child or Adult children being tortured to death! Enough is Enough with this lawless Bullshit!
Hahahaha is this comedy.
No really, this looks like a comedy skit
I just got through watching how the gangs operate in El Salvador and Honduras and Mexico ,
Digging the bodies up of dead women and children who were the loved ones of rival gangs.
These zealand guys all would get mopped up in one day in a Chicago or L.A. Hood.
HELL, an old ex veteran dude from the USA would spank these little kids bottoms and send them home to their mommies quick. Hahahaha.
This is the work of an irresponsible Government, Treausry, Resevre Bank , While Collar criminals
