In this video I check out the BOYA BY-WM6 UHF Professional Wireless Omnidirectional Lavalier Lapel Microphone System with 48 Optional Channels for Canon Sony Nikon Panasonic DSLR ENG EFP DV Video Camera
Yes agree sound from the H1 preamp much better than Sony A6500 preamp. Similar poor preamps on Canon. I have several small audio adapters/preamps aka Beachtek DXA and Saramonic. These would enable you to use the wireless mics. And the sound will be as good if not better than the H1 and more controllable with ability to create a safety track) . Yes starts to increase size of rig. That is why I use a small cage and this keeps things as compact as possible. Found your channel and like your presentation style so just subscribed.
First-- I LOVE your videos. They are extremely useful and helpful. Whenever I'm researching new camera gear for my own channel videos, I always hope to find a review by you. Especially lenses! Now, one question I came up with while I watched this video is what would happen if you used the BOYA wireless adapter to link to your Zoom H1 instead of direct into the A6500? The reason I think this could be useful is this scenario: Let's say you're shooting a wedding video, and you want to control when the Zoom H1 starts recording and stops recording. You could just have the groom wear the BOYA with a lav all day, and whenever you are shooting video that needs audio, you would have the Zoom H1 at your side to start and stop the recording. I'm wondering if you would mind doing a test with that setup, to see if you get the same quality you get when you connect directly into the Zoom H1? -MTR
Are you really sure the problem was the Sony preamp? I’m not. One test is missing: plug the boya receiver into the zoom recorder instead of the camera. Second you should definitely check your audio input levels. For shit like this, where you don’t move too much, I would also strongly recommend a boom mic on a stand near you (right above the frame). I record every audio directly into my Canon 200d/SL2 (and Canon preamps are definitely not we’ll known for good preamps) and don’t have such noise. I’d also recommend testing Rode mics. I can recommend the cheap video micro for vlogging while traveling (because it’s light weight, small and doesn’t need additional batteries). You can even put it on an pole above you, if you like to. For studio recordings I use the video mic pro on a boom pole. For interviews or recording „moving targets“ I use the Rodelink Video Maker Kit (Wireless lavalier mic). In my experience Rode mics have a really good audio quality, but are much better to afford than the expensive Senheiser stuff. Did you try any of these already?
TECHNOLOGY MAFIA: You mentioned an A7 III review is coming Do you know when? I am debating between A7 III and A6300 - Trying to find out if the extra $1000 is worth it for the improved dynamic range, image/video quality @ 4K, low light, and dual SD card slots and longer battery life. I am not a pro. I just want to produce exceptional YouTube videos (mostly indoors, some outdoors). I got Zhiyun Crane 2 and A7 III but am torn about selling/returning those and pocketing the $1700 by just making do with A6300. Wanted to check your A7 III review to help me decide. Do you have a TLDR for it you could share, if it's not coming out soon?
I confidently bought a6000 last year mostly coz of your review and knowledge sharing. And now im selling it off and gonna upgrade to a6500 also after some thoughts after watching u switching up the game~~ 😂😂😂
Loving the tips! Just wondering, what is the best vlogging lens? I have used the standard kit lens on my Sony a6000 but the video isn't terribly crisp on a larger screen. I'm wondering what lens I should move onto? I have looked at the Sony 35mm F1.8 but its about £400 (a bit out of budget)! any suggestions?
A7 III eco system is quiete expensive
You will spend at least 4000€ on lenses if you want to appreciate the gorgeous image quality
I recommend you check out the Samyang 35mm f2.8 or the Zeiss 35mm f2.8
What is your current go to lens with your a6000?
The ambient noise was a little more noticeable with the better quality mic over the wireless set, though that's usually easy to filter out in post without hurting the quality of the dialogue or other desired audio if you know to be expecting it. Ultimately that might be an easier process to undertake than syncing separate audio tracks, and there might still be a net gain with this. Not to mention the benefit of not having to keep up with a tethered recorder in the event of needing to move around while shooting.
A7iii?!?! Aw, C'mon man. You're killin' us. Audio that's for a6300 and a6500... and not the a6000? And next up... the a7?!?! I'm not ready to buy up! (But, yes, I want to. Eho doesnt?) Alright, whatever -- that's on you. Just don't forget your roots. ;) even though the audio review does not apply to the a6000, it was a very good review and I could definitely recognize the quality was better with the equipment you've been using. I am interested in moving from still photography into video recreationally , so... If I'm recording video and I want good audio, what is a good hot shoe microphone to pick up the surrounding Ambient sound, or does one not exist? (Not a clip on mic for voice narration) Thanks.
I think you should do a test with your neck mic plugged into the camera. I think you will find the audio will be ok. My thoughts are the transmission via UHF is normally a problem. I found this in the old television audio days with wireless microphones.
Good to know TechnoMaf, thanks. Through the a6500 is definitely noisy, which brings me to a question. I am testing an a6500, love it, but is there a way to edit the video clicking sound it makes, and what video editing software do you use? Thanks, Jan.
Sure, you're welcome! One other thing you might want to do is check your audio recording level. It's in the settings, and I think it's only available when you are in full video mode (spin the dial to the video reel icon). Whatever it's at, try turning it down a bit. You should be able to do some simple audio recording even with the mic that is built into the camera. It won't sound amazing, but it shouldn't be clicking necessarily.
Thank you, Modern Tech. No, I’m not using a mic of any kind, didn’t realize I needed to. So I will do that. Thank you so much for your reply. And I will check out the video editing software you mentioned. I have Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop but not the suite so far. Your reply gets me going in the right direction. Many thanks!!!!
Jan, what kind of mic do you have connected to your A6500? I use a Video Mic Go and I haven't noticed any sort of clicking sounds. As for editing it, I'll leave that answer up for others who have more experience. I know there are audio/WAV editors out there that can perform some cleanup to sounds. Possibly even Adobe Audition, if you've got the Adobe suite. If you don't have the suite, you could try a free app like Audacity. Audacity has a "noise clean up" feature that MIGHT work, but you'd have to play with it.
Hello technologymafia well it would be nice to have your opinion on the 7mark3 (it seems addictive as camera 😉) so please don’t purchase it too soon it would be on the other hand very nice if you were comparing some lenses of the FE line mount on the the a6xxx series with E-mount especially the different zoom and prime (what are not too heavy) over 85mm 🙏🏻
I can really tell the difference between the Zoom H1 and the Boya. In my Opinion the Zoom H1 audio seems fuller-richer and louder.
For my style of videos I need (like) to include the ambient sounds of engines and mechanical stuff I will be recording (just started my channel over again) I'm still working the recording kinks out, I've shot the first two videos with my iPhone while thats is okay I know I can do better, I decided to get a Canon SL2 which I'm picking up tomorrow already got my rode microphone I tried that out on my Canon 7Dmkii and its works pretty good, I'm probably going to add a A6500 to the mix later on, I like to have a mirrorless on hand for those times a big DSLR is not necessary or where I'm told "no professional equipment is allowed" the a6xxx series work as well as a DSLR but slide under the radar, I just sold my a6000 (a friend needed a camera badly) I tell everyone I'm not attached to any one brand but truthfully Sony is killing it on the mirrorless for the most part and Canon still does DSLR's very well but they have not really come out with any innovative for a bit, Sony has the 4k compact camera handled but their lens and prices are up there, Canon has affordable lenses but it is like they afraid to just bring out a true 4k mirror yea the new mirrorless has 4k but its cropped and the Sony's just feel better in the hand for me.
Sorry for the long post but, I enjoy your reviews and you never know I might one day need to get a lav mike and wireless receiver or set up a separate audio source, so now I know I have some options and knowledge.
I recently switched from just my shotgun to a Zoom/Lav combo, but haven't fully edited a video with it yet. I think I'm good with it so far. Respect for this editing job, I know how much work this was.
The Zoom is definintely better overall sound quality.
Stoked for the a7iii video!
TechnologyMafia Zoom H1 ! I'm waiting for Sigma art lenses price before taking the A7 III... Those full frame lenses are really expansive thanks Sony ! I hope Samyang will make more good AF FE lenses too...
