Bill Maher is right in that 'locks' do have to be installed (if you will) for the control of greedy tendencies within capitalism. Uncontrolled capitalism (given the darker aspects of human nature) can be quite dark I suppose.

I got what you're saying; I used to think like you. It's not that simple. A so-called 'Jew free' world is not going to change the inherent greed of human nature. Even the ancient high-trust societies of Northern Europe periodically had psychopathic individuals out to destroy the needed collective during those cold winters. Only we goys are accountable for our behaviour & comportment no matter where the decadances come from. It stops with us no matter how you look at it.

Free trade which are really corporate pacts are what have allowed corporations to shoot for the third world and lower wages. Globalize trade is the problem. Not capitalism. Ignoring the root of all the problems which is central banking of course.

Mother nature is not a marxist. She made people unequal (evolutionary diversity) and this makes marxism untenable. Marxism is ineffective because self expression and indiviiduallity is suppressed under the tyranny of conformity and that tyranny eventually becomes murderous. Capitalism allows these inequalities to express themselves and that can become a problem as rich elites dominate but marxism isn't a cure for that.
Bj D (15 дней назад)

Capitalism only worked in America because we had lots of empty free land (yes much was free-Homestead Act) and a small population: in 1900 US had only 76,000,000, compared to China's almost 1 billion. No wonder why China saw that they needed communism. Too bad USA forced every attempt to fail. (See Wm Blum's ROGUE STATE)

So this guy is a protectionist. He says things that are obvious to a 10th grader. Then obtusely puts it at the feet of capitalism, simply saying, we need to do something to hold that in (keep companys from manufacturing overseas). But he never says what should be done. Coward. What he wants to say, as a marxist, is gov to seize and nationalize private industry and control production. What a shallow conversation.
Keith Williams (23 дня назад)
Mahers river analogy is SO cogent and pithy. Right on bill!
Keith Williams (23 дня назад)
Such an obtuse analysis. Uh, captalism doesnt deliver the american dream anymore. The more restrict capitalism, the worse it performs. Laffer curve for one. The more our economy is regulated by leftists, the worse it performs.

I’m really surprised that Professor Wolfe juxtaposed David Ricardo with Marx, when Marx was very much a Ricardian economist. In fact, when describing his “steady state economy,” Ricardo came up with an economy that looked very much like what Marx depicted as the endpoint of capitalism

Mr. Wolff is a good man attempting to replace capitalism with socialism but that is a massively hard thing to do in the USA and not the least lines of resistance. Consider this; the basic equation of commerce is most of the problem, think different. If a percentage of a consumer's dollar was treated as an investment credit by the participating business (new age business) that took that dollar in, the system will begin to redistribute asset based wealth over time whereas the masses will develop growth from consumption - no longer grossly marginalized by the elite and the elite's take will be diminished as the masses begin to enjoy passive wealth growth as the 1% have enjoyed over the years. These my friends are the LEAST lines of resistance and totally doable thanks to digital technology. If you're so inclined please join the discussion on @C, there are other empowering steps that complete a new people centric equation of commerce. Don't think we should rely on technology? There are over 80,000 airplane flights every day in the USA, if the masses are willing to place their very lives in the hands of technology, why hesitate to correct capitalism with technology? Power to the people.

Every country as rated by the Cato institute as having greater human freedom than the US has universal health care. This 'either capitalism or socialism' is a false dichotomy. Every nation on earth has both, making reality a hybrid. The question surely is what mix is best? For health care, you may have universal health care (with or without insurance, in my view more efficient without), AS WELL AS a private health system. These systems maximize choice for the public.

Stale old argument of greed is good by Maher. In other words, without a profit motive in it, Marxism would halt all technological and scientific progress that comes so natural to Capitalism. What a bullshit argument. First of all, scientific and technological breakthroughs are due to workers (highly skilled workers but workers nonetheless) and not the capitalist class. Second, Marxism is not about getting rid of the profit motive. It just calls for democratizing that privilege so that it's accessible to workers (ones who actually create value in economy) and not the capitalists. Remember, value is created by work and not by capital. You can have a hundred capitalists worth trillions of dollars but they will never be able to create anything of value (say a vaccine, a car, etc.) on their own. Workers on the other hand don't need any capitalists for creating value. I know that the current system is set up in a way that nothing gets done until some capitalist invests his/her capital in an economic activity but who says it has to be that way. Why do we need the blessing of a capitalist to do the right thing. All the resources of this planet should belong to all of its inhabitants. And these resources should be exploited responsibly to fulfill the needs of everybody regardless of race, gender, religion, etc. I know people say that's Utopian thinking and there's no way people can organize like that. To them I say you lack imagination. Imagine during the age of feudalism there's a peasant who is able to think ahead of his time. He speaks to his fellow peasants about the absurdity of feudalism but his fellow peasants simply ignore him. They have lived all their lives under feudalism and it's almost impossible for them to imagine a world without feudalism. But now we know a better world was possible. If humanity can continue to progress then I'm sure future generations will look back at us and wonder why did we put up with all this Capitalism nonsense.

Richard Wolff doesn't despise capitalism nor does he despise socialism. He just wants to seek for a system that properly applies to mainstream society.
Sergio Díaz Nila (1 месяц назад)
No, marxism is not an economic system, is a analytical tool, and a theory of crashing of the "utopia" of having economic systems, because Marx was opposed to the idea of proposing systems, that is the reason why he divided the Socialist movement in 2, The Utopian Socialists, everyone but him, and the Scientific socialists, him, because all the other socialists where proposing systems like a free market of cooperatives, or a free market of labor notes.

Corporations find it lucrative to outsource and/or mechanize jobs until one day they find nobody has sufficient income to buy the goods or services they produce, at least not without running up sizable amounts of personal debt. Then what?
Brock Story (1 месяц назад)
+Tubmaster 5000 no people will be doing things that you never though of and having to work less no basic income either. I mean in the 30's if you said people will be able to work 40 hours a week and still live off that people would have said yeah if you had some sort of guaranteed basic income....
Tubmaster 5000 (1 месяц назад)
Brock Story Only if some sort of guaranteed basic income scheme is created, which is sufficiently large to support an individual. I see no signs of such a scheme in the near future. Many of the activities you describe may themselves make good incomes, but certainly not all.
Brock Story (1 месяц назад)
um....actually when automation takes all jobs people will be able to make money doing things they actually love like singing, dancing, painting, running, sports. you would maybe only have to work 3 hours a day and would make enough to live a good life is that a bad thing?
TheTabaK23 (1 месяц назад)
His analysis his correct but he seems to not actually be a Marxist. He seems to just wants capitalism with regulation and a sufficient welfare state.
Brock Story (1 месяц назад)
+TheTabaK23 for example you think banks could do the things they do if there were no regulations and anyone could start a bank? cause they could not they would all go out of business. as there would be banks all over and they would all be different.
Brock Story (1 месяц назад)
+TheTabaK23 regulations create abuse as it makes corporations accountable to government I want corporations to be accountable to consumers which means no regulations that way corporations can do what they want and the consumers can choose what they like and don't like rather then government choosing. make sense?
TheTabaK23 (1 месяц назад)
Brock Story I’m not a socialist I don’t want that. All I want is capitalism with reasonable regulation to prevent abuse.
Brock Story (1 месяц назад)
+TheTabaK23 actually sometimes they do seize property or make people tear it down if it does not follow regulations. and how do i own my home if you can tell me how many windows I must have? also oh you said worker control of the means of production not public ownership cause there is a difference considering everyone is a member of the public. so what if half the public decides they want to split up and each take ownership of their own piece of the production and trade the goods that they individually produce would you kill them or throw them in jail?
TheTabaK23 (1 месяц назад)
Brock Story “Marxism is the system of socialism of which the dominant feature is public ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange. “ Your analogy is bad, that sounds exactly what a mortgage sounds like, but regulation does not stipulate that if rules aren’t followed then property is seized. It stipulates that if rules aren’t followed then punishment by law will be carried out.

Marx is dated. As great a thinker as he was, it still was from a materialistic standpoint and we should know better that a materialistic foundation is fundamentally flawed.
Sidtube10 (1 месяц назад)
+Day Tripper For starters, how about you evaluate your own life and see if your desires/wants are limited or limited? Does acquiring 'things' fully satisfy you much less in an everlasting way? I bet not!! The very nature of material objects is finite in scope, while the mental space has a much larger arena...almost infinite [I say almost because anything that the mind conceives while it can be very vast has to be finite]. In fact it is this very infinite thirst that pushes man to expand his sphere of acquisition/control. Much of that is misguided because, as I said earlier, material objects due to their finite nature fail to provide lasting fulfillment. It is because of this fundamental issue that the Communist leadership eventually becomes totalitarian [i.e. tries to expand its mental reach through control] while the general masses/proletariats end up facing oppression. History has proven that time and again.
Tovarisch Zac (1 месяц назад)
+Sidtube10 by "opium for the masses" he was undeniably correct
Day Tripper (1 месяц назад)
That’s a pretty thoroughly nonsensical comment... For starters, what evidence do you have to support your claim that “human wants are limitless”?
Sidtube10 (1 месяц назад)
+Tovarisch Zac Well, Marx like many thinkers, was a product of his place and time. His idea of historical materialism (i.e. the changes in material conditions is what influences organization of human society) rests on the foundation of materialism, which as we know is fundamentally flawed (please refer to quantum mechanics etc). Secondly, what was Marx’s idea of liberation? It was liberation from the struggle for physical wants. While this is valuable, it can can never lead to any lasting fulfillment, because human wants are limitless. Furthermore, such mental preoccupation with physicality leads to crudeness and moral bankruptcy. These aspects were unclear to Marx, which is not surprising because he had no encounter with mysticism or spirituality (which btw is poles apart from the the religions of Judaism/Christianity he studied and labeled as the opium of the masses!). Again, please don’t get me wrong. Karl Marx/Engels were very 'perceptive' and scientific and had great concern for the 'exploited' class in the industrial age - this is commendable! Had he encountered spirituality, his proposition would have been much different.

to truly modify, abandon or overthrow capitalism the intention needs to go higher than preventing merely America from losing their dominance. it's only going to work substantially and have true power when the motivation, thus action, is universal. to bring true resonance it needs to go deeper, or say, go FROM deeper place. I believe the topic is even more relevant now than in 2014. it'd be interesting to hear dr wolff dialogue with maher again in 2018.

The American Dream isn’t that every citizen or even most would be well off. The dream was that, coming from nothing, it is possible to become well off. The founding of America changed the world because it was the first country not to be rigidly controlled by a religion, monarchy or caste system. Marxism/socialism/communism have and would only institute a much more rigid system than what the founders fought against.

Socialism is a trick of ruling class for purposes of control. All you need is to have leader over a barrel (an oil barrel) and you're in business--Big Business. Socialism violates categorical imperative--"Do Unto Others....." How would you like to be the one who is robbed by Socialists. Socialists already steal enough--if you work less, college tuition drops dramatically--here you see the fallacy of removing work ethic under socialism. Evolves out of feudalism but is only tried in pre-feudal societies, China and Russia. Socialism/Communism seems to be the way in which pre-feudal societies justify their pre-feudal autocratic governments. Communism assumes that man is good and leaders of Soviets can be trusted with all the wealth of society. Actually, in Russia, the ruling elements or nomenclatura became corrupt after the revolution faster than John McEnroe's return of service. Anarchist Bakhunin knew this would happen and destroyed Marx in debate--the Soviets would be corrupted because of corrupted human nature. Also, economist Menger destroyed Marx's theory and Marx apparently actually accepted Menger's critique--Marx stopped writing and just studied, gambled, drank, and goofed off for most of his adult life after starting 'Das Capital'--he was writing about a false, disproven theory and he knew it.

Free market capitalism has done more to pull more people out of poverty than any other form of economic system in the history of mankind. Every government that has tried an alternative form, i.e. socialism and communism have failed and it is no coincidence. There is no such thing as a perfect system. There will always be winners and losers and government can certainly put into affect systems to protect the losers, for a time. But a free market is As Good as It Gets and to believe that any government can start manipulating the free market to improve outcomes is hubris. Any collectivist form of economy fails to account for basic Human Nature. Which is why collectivist economies always fail in the long run. People like to claim that human beings are "good" , sure they are, but they are first and foremost self-serving.
